>> reporter: just moments ago, i talked to camden police and i was told the driver is listed in very critical condition. at this point, his car has been towed from the scene. over my shoulder, you see utility crews are restoring power lines. a demolition company has also come to the neighborhood to tear down the porch left dangling in the air. >> what did you hear? >> a big boom! i started screaming, get out of here, get out of here! it's a bomb! >> no, we're not in iraq, we're in camden. >> the gonzalez family was inside this second floor apartment when the chrysler 300 hit a utility pole, then their building and porch. >> and when we look outside, we saw the car in the middle of the street, flip over. and the back tire was on fire. >> reporter: another witness said at one point, the car went airborne. the driver was thrown out on to the sidewalk near newton and hadden. investigators say his car or

flying debris hit as many as seven cars before landing in the middle of the street. >> your car was the van in front of this red car? >> yeah, the wood that came out of the porch hit the car. >> reporter: investigators also tell us the driver, who may have been intoxicated, was apparently speeding north on hadden when he lost control. when we arrived shortly after the accident, the engine, shattered glass, twisted metal and church musical sheets were all over the street. >> people do get into accidents here, but not like this. >> initially, the families living here inside these homes were told to stay put. now the property manager has asked them to leave while the structure is being inspected. live for now in camden, monique braxton, nbc 10 news. police in atlanta county just announced five arrests in connection with an expressway shooting that left one person dead and four others hurt.

four people were shot inside of this white expedition. they're recovering at local hospitals. all of them now facing charges in this case. another shooting victim was later found dead in the passenger seat of a car in the garden state parkway. the driver of that car was taken into custody and now charged. state police tell us the shooting happened on the ac expressway near mile post 12 around 3:00 in the afternoon yesterday. the driver of the white suv was able to get to the egg harbor wawa where they asked for help. >> they almost spotted me coming in. and when they parked, the driver was like, can you please help us, can you please help us, we've been shot. i said, i can't help you, but i called the cops. >> investigators say it's not clear yet from which vehicles the deadly fired shots were fired. right near the main crime scene, police found a number of weapons they believe are connected to the shooting. the motive behind the shooting is still under investigation.

philadelphia police hope surveillance cameras will help solve an execution-style murder in west philadelphia. police arrived at 55th and santom streets just before midnight and found a man shot four times at close range. the victim died at the hospital. the victim is in his 20s and have not yet been identified. police are checking a number of cameras in the area for usable surveillance video. in philadelphia, two children are recovering after one of them playing with a gun accidentally shot both. nbc 10 was on the scene at edding terrace in south philadelphia. police told us a 13-year-old boy had the gun when it went off, hitting himself in the hand and a 12-year-old girl in the knee. both children are in stable condition at the hospital. there is no word on who owned the gun or if any charges will be filed. >> announcer: now your nbc 10 first alert weather. >> still hot. a live look now at the

roxborough section of philadelphia, from our camera on top of the presidential city of hartman. our heat wave may be officially over today, but that doesn't mean it's not sticky and uncomfortable outside. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist krystal klei is here with the forecast. krystal? >> we are, we're looking at those hot temperatures returning in the afternoon again. not seeing that break from the heat for a couple more days. so, where we're sitting now, already into the lower 80s. here's the bright side. as we move along that ten-day forecast, we're talking about some temperatures that only cap around here. that's a while away. for today, 82 in philadelphia. the suburbs sitting at 79 degrees, as well as new jersey, upper 70s for us in the lehigh valley and delaware right now, 80 for that current temperature. sunshine, abundant out there through this afternoon. a few spot clouds like we saw yesterday, also expected. as for your highs, barely turned 90-degree mark. so breaking the heat wave, but still hot. upper 80s, pretty much stretching across the board here

with mostly sunny conditions. on your radar and satellite, no rain for us to track today. and like yesterday, i expect that to be a theme as we move through your afternoon. no rain, a few spotty clouds, sunshine going to be affecting us. humidity not terribly high today, but it will be getting a bit stickier as we move into your wednesday. and let's take a look as we pull out of it, what's going down to the south of us. we have that tropical depression 8 sitting down so the-out of us. that's not going to be affecting us with rain, but it will be affecting us with the dangerous rip currents. so we're going to be taking a look at the effects of those dangerous rip currents. we're going to talk about more about tropical depression 9 and how that may affect us right into your labor day. all of that will be coming up in just a few minutes. >> and as krystal mentioned, a big tropical storm is heading towards north carolina. the weather channel's mike seidel has the latest from the outer banks. >> reporter: here on the outer banks of north carolina, we're watching tropical depression number eight.

it's going to be a brush-by. the locals are not concerned at all. >> hopefully it blows by quick and i can can be back to the beach. >> reporter: the worst will be locally heavy winds and maybe downpours. we have lost a little bit of sand. there is a little bit of a berm here, but high tide this morning only came up to about here. last night's high tide went all the way up here, almost to the lifeguard stand. this moves out and then they're going to be watching tropical depression number nine, which is down in the gulf of mexico. this is forecast to track well enough offshore on friday we don't get any direct exact. but it will be a surf and rip current issue. i'm meteorologist mike seidel for the weather channel in kill devil hills, north carolina. new this morning, more changes for drivers because of this weekend's made in america

festival. parking is prohibited on the south side. it's also banned on park town place from 22nd to 24th street on the north side. the restrictions continue until next tuesday. time now for a check on the roads with nbc 10 first alert traffic reporter, jessica boyington. jessica, what are you seeing out there right now? >> pamela, we're starting off in new jersey right now, in cherry hill. kings highway around route 70. a set of traffic lights malfunctioning in the area. as you can see right here, there are police officers there on the scene. earlier, there was a crew there trying to fix some lights in the area, cones in place, so traffic kind of moving around the city, causing a little bit of delays throughout the cherry hill area. it should be anything major that sets you back too much. and an accident off of 295. the southbound ramp off the commodore berry bridge is politicked. another accident on upper dublin to watch for. the vine street expressway through center city looks great. all the rest of your majors look great, the schuylkill, 95, 202, should be good to go with normal volume. today, the pennsylvania

senate will reconvene to vote on a new attorney general. governor tom wolf nominated bruce beamer to take over the post. beamer is a former top aide to kathleen kane who resigned as attorney general earlier this month. kaine was tried and convicted and the jury found her guilty on all charges, including conspiracy, perjury, and obstruction of justice. happening today at the shore, miss america contestants are arrives in atlantic city. the 52 hopefuls will be welcomed to their new home for the next two weeks. later this afternoon. they'll meet on the public -- they'll meet the public in front of the boardwalk hall. at 2:00 p.m., the festivities will end with a crowning o of a new miss america on september 11th. and controversy continues over an anthem protest by 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick. kaepernick stayed seated during

a new nbc news survey monkey poll shows hillary clinton maintaining her lead over donald trump. she's ahead 48% to 42%, but it has narrowed slightly. last week, the same poll had hillary clinton ahead by eight points. tim kaine will make two stops in the keystone state. he's expected to stump in erie and lancaster tomorrow. he'll be at bethlehem at an organizing event at the hannover township community center. as for clinton herself, "the new york times" report she's preparing to debate donald trump by researching his possible weaknesses. the report says clinton advisers are talking to trump's ghost writer of his best selling book, "the art of the deal." they're looking for insight about trump's deepest insecurities that clinton can use as a weapon during the debate. her team is also giving advice from psychology experts to measure how trump may respond to

here, but we're in the low 80s, philadelphia, south jersey, and the jersey shore, sitting at 82 degrees. and we pull into your philadelphia neighborhoods, parkside sitting at 83. mana manayunk, 81. penceport sitting at 83. and the same low 80s around places like fox chase, bustleton, and summerton, as well. temperature trend for us. we've been seeing lots of 90s. in the last four days, we've been in the low 90s. the average is 83, starting today, meaning we have been well above average, still the same today, although we will break the official heat wave of 90s. it's going to be hot. 89/93, very similar here. the heat, good news is, humidity, not terribly high today. that's going to bump up tomorrow. on your radar and satellite, this is a wide view. here we're sitting and you see it's clear for us. but we look directly to the south of us, and we do have that tropical system that's going to be affecting parts of the east coast, right around the carolinas. now, what we're looking at is that it may affect us in a

different way. so what you see here is the path of the system. it's going to be heading out to sea. not necessarily bringing up rain. you can see the timeline, wednesday through thursday, though. that can lead to some dangerous rip currents for us and about a moderate risk. then that threat continues. looking at now tropical depression nine, winds at about 35 miles per hour, but if we put this into motion, this is the track, wednesday, thursday, moving over florida, dumping a lot of rain in that area, and this potential track continues out to sea as well, yet again clipping parts of the east coast. for us, looking like dangerous rip currents could be affecting us right on through your labor day weekend. so a lot of folks heading to parts of the delaware beaches, the jersey shore. this is the heads up for you on the beach hazards that may persi persist. you can check on the safe zones to swim in, where the lifeguards are set up. and speaking of your weekend plans, here's the forecast for your labor day, your saturday, sunday, low 80s to mid-80s in philadelphia.

our heat wave may be officially over, but we'll be dealing with some high temperatures and humidity today. here's a live look at the beach in cape may this morning. beautiful day. should be a pretty nice day out for people enjoying the final days of summer vacation season, but a tropical system could cause some problems offshore this weekend. nbc 10 first alert meteorologist krystal klei is here with the forecast. krystal? >> reporter: that's right. we are looking out at the shore. nice conditions, but have to worry about those rip currents, something that's been a moderate risk for being a dangerous level as we move through the next few days thanks to tropical systems. temperature wise, things look okay. 82 in philadelphia. mt. holly, also at 82. wilmington, 80. same for dover and outer atlantic city. that's at the airport. 84 degrees, the current temperature outside. temperatures are going to run just a couple of degrees lower today than they were yesterday, but still hot through your afternoon. here's the forecast. philadelphia at 2:00, 87

degrees. san jo sunny by mostly sunny out the there. by 10:00, dropping into the lower 70s. the lehigh valley, 2:00 through the low 80s to your afternoon and in sboo the evening, we drop down to 70. and in delaware, temperatures will sit in the mid-80s. sunny through 6:00 p.m. should cap more in the mid- to upper 80s. that's the same for new jersey, as well. we're looking at those temperatures capping right below 90 degrees. 81 at 6:00 for your commute home and clear skies as we move into the evening. along the jersey shore, low 80s, consistent with what we've been seeing. and actually, that's going to be something we continue to see for the next few days. but on top of that, we are going to see a few changes. mostly in the form of higher humidity, chances of rain, and a big drop in your temperature. that's the final change before we get into your labor day weekend. we'll talk about all of that coming up in a few minutes. a colorado man is behind bars after police say he admitted that he tried to kill his young son in a car accident.

police say 29-year-old nathan wentzell admitted to purposely leaving his 2 1/2-year-old son unbuckled and crashing his car into another car at 75 miles an hour. he said he tried to kill his son because he didn't want to be a father. little isaiah suffered numerous broeb bones and is recovering with a cast on half of his body and stitches on his head. outrage in southern california over the killing of three sea otters. they were shot to death and then washed ashore. sea otters are a threatened species, protected by federal and the state of california. officials have ordered a -- offered, rather, a $10,000 reward in the case. dramatic dash cam video shows a pileup on a new york highway and the brave actions of bystanders in the media aftermath. the mayor of binghamton released the video of last thursday's accident. one of the cars burst into

flames. bystanders jumped into action, helping put out the flames and rescue the driver. ten people went to the hospital. police say the accident was caused by a tractor-trailer with faulty breaks. college students at two pennsylvania schools can boast about throwing some of the wildest parties in the country. lehigh and bucknell universities round out on the princeton's review top five party schools. topping the list is the university of wisconsin-madison. that's followed by west virginia university and the university of illinois, the top party school last year. bingham young university in utah was the most sober school for the 19th strait school. and vasser college in new york had the best financial aid. new this morning, going organic. in part of philadelphia while revitalizing a neighborhood. officials broke ground today on the fresh grocer of monument road. the store in winfield heights

be a small update. the iphone is expected to be more water resistant thanks to the removal of the headphone jack and have dual camera lens. it may also come in a new limited edition color, which is blue. apple is expected to fight a big tax bill handed by europe's top regulator. the tax ruling said ireland had given illegal aid to apple by helping the tech giant lower its tax bill for more than 20 years. now regulators say apple owes ireland more than $14 billion. tonight, eagles' long snapper jon dorenbos will once again make his mark in hollywood. the veteran bird is hoping his latest shot at stardom on "america's got talent" will be his most magical yet. dorenbos will bring his magic act into tonight's semifinal round. he told csn's john clark that being in this new spotlight has

associate, glenda cook. welcome you both to the show this morning. and tell us a little bit about the mission. >> yeah, mana has been around for 26 years now. we supply nutrition and nourishment to people who are at nutritional risk for critical illness, free of charge. we deliver seven days a week, three meals day to our clients. it's awesome. >> and tell us a little bit about this year's pie fund-raiser. >> pie in the sky is our largest fund-raiser every year. we look to sell about 8,000 pies. we bake all 8,000 in house. it opens on october 1st, the sales, and we'll start breaking just about then, and we bake all the way through the beginning of november. different weekends, and we bake anything in house, like i said, and it's really an awesome, awesome experience. and our pies are $25 a piece. and we have a signature pie, the sky pie, which is $35. and when you purchase one of those pies, it helps feed a family of four thanksgiving dish. so it's really great.

>> and what can varieties can people look out for, for the pies? >> we have our signature sky pie, a caramel walnut chocolate cheesecake, which is decadent and delicious. we have a pumpkin, apple, and southern pecan. >> glenda, i know you're looking for more volunteers. can you tell us a little bit about that? >> through the month of september, we're in need of volunteers for our early bird shift, which is 7:00 to 10:00 a.m.. and the volunteers will be packing meals for the next day's delivery, helping with truckloading, prepping meals, and all sorts of things. >> and can you tell us a little bit about what else you guys have planned leading up to thanksgiving? >> oh, with the pie baking, as eric mentioned -- >> we also have run for your life, another big fund-raiser we have in october, hosted by west laurel hill cemetery. we have a pie kickoff event and a lot of weekends where people can come in and volunteer to help us bake the pies, decorate

here's the look. your neighborhoods today, philadelphia and center city starting at 89 this afternoon and 87 in summerton. the good news here, we're looking at a several lining. while it's still hot, we're not talking 90s over the entire area. instead, mostly mid- to upper 80s for forecast temperatures. in parts of the pennsylvania suburbs, westchester, 85. nice relief there. 86 for doylestown and those upper 80s for lansdale. in the lehigh valley, 87, allentown, and 86 for cooks town. looking at new jersey, trenton at 86. 84 for hammondton, over to the shoulder, 85 in ocean city. atlantic city at 80. and cape may, the same. and delaware, smyrna sitting at 85 degrees for the forecast high temperature. and if we look at the temperature trend over the next several days, here's the good news. we say, it is hot, then we start to drop down with our temperatures. and we get a little rain willful. thursday, dropping to 84 with a chance of thunderstorms in our forecast. and that spreads across the board.

same for dover, 84 thursday, but that's following a hot 87 tomorrow. in allentown, upper 80s, drop to low 80s by friday. and friday, 78 for your forecast. high temperature will feel great getting ready for that long weekend. and wildwood staying mostly in the low 80s, but that chance of thunderstorms does move in thursday, if you're getting an chance on your labor day weekend. if you're waiting until that three-day weekend, here's what you can expect. we'll start with your philadelphia planner, forecast for us over those three days, looking at temperatures starting to warm. saturday, 82. sunday, 84. and monday at 86. overall right now, sunny to mostly sunny and on the dry side. so good news there. if you're heading to the shore, good news as well, looking like we will remain dry. right now a moderate risk for some dangerous rip currents. that's going today, wednesday, a little break thursday, but it looks like it will pick back up friday into your labor day weekend. temperature wise, though, upper 70s for you on saturday across

the delaware beaches and the jersey shore. low 80s to upper 70s on your sunday, and then all of us sitting in the low 80s by monday, with a mix of clouds and sunshine out there. and of course remember the sunscreen, uv index still sitting in that high territory says we move through the labor day weekend. here's the ten-day on 10, high heat through wednesday at 91. then the drop. then the bigger drop here. we've got row 80s, friday, saturday. sunday still in the mid-70s. and we pick back up into our next week with those sunny to mostly sunny conditions, and the lower 90s returning. if you check out this ten-day forecast, it's notable we just got that one day of storms we're looking at on your thursday. we'll be right back. big oil polluters. they have a friend in pennsylvania. millionaire pat toomey.

today, dozens of activists are expected to deliver petitions to the pennsylvania headquarters to the makers of epipen. more than 600,000 outraged consumers signed the petitions over the epipen price hike. mylan pharmaceuticals is based near pittsburgh. it introduced the price of the life-saving pens by more than 400%. the petitions call for legal reforms to stop drug companies from price gouging. and the so-called caveman diet could boost heart health. researchers at the university of

texas found healthy adults who swap the western diet for a paelo diet boosted their heart health. the paelo diet is based on a diet ate by cavemen. researchers found people who ate the diet had lower risks of heart attacks and other cardiovascular diseases. but earlier studies suggested that the diet could be dangerous, leading to rapid weight gain and increasing the risk of diet. this afternoon starting at 3:00, it's "ellen" with george clooney and rihanna. then on nbc 10 news at 4:00 today, a man's olympic dreams were dashed. a flight delay made him miss it all. he calls nbc 10 responds. when the company wouldn't give him a refund, how harry hairston and the team took his battle on,
