is right now. >> right now, hermine is moving into south carolina. it is a tropical storm. if you were with us last night at 11:00 p.m., you would have seen it making landfall at a cat 1 hurricane. at the center it has picked up a little bit of speed, moving north 18 miles an hour. there's the center crossing from georgia into south carolina. the rain stretches a very long distance from the center of the storm. you see it stretching up the mid-atlantic states here approaching our area. but it is still sitting south of us. as far as the rain from the center of this storm, it stretches about 400 miles from the center. again, we'll start to see it move into parts of the area as early as tomorrow. we'll be tracking the timing very closely for you. as far as the rainfall rates, closer to the center is some of the heaviest rain. almost 1 1/2 inches of rain per hour. we're going to watch for this heavy rain as it gets closer. closer to the center of the storm as well we actually do have some buoy data here, just offshore of georgia and south

carolina. winds gusting close to 60 miles an hour. and as it gets closer, there you see it, wave heights around 10 feet. take a look at the current wind gusts over land. now, this is not from our buoy data, this is from our land observation. buford in south carolina, close to 50 mile an hour wind gusts. and reported on the north side of the center. as it gets closer to us, we can expect the gusty winds, especially if you're at the shore and delaware beaches. here's a closer look at home. locally we're still dry. really nice day out, just south of virginia. that's where the rain is starting to move in from the south. that is the very northern edge of the rain from hermine. locally, we expect some rain to be moving in. again, that will depend heavily on where the center of the storm lies. but we have a tropical storm watch out for the entire jersey shore, the delaware beaches, and we could see higher winds now with this storm. depends on the strengthening of it as well. winds 40 to 50 miles per hour over your labor day weekend,

gusting closer to 60 miles per hour. with the latest track on tropical storm hermine, let's send it over to chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> sheena, this track is coming in two forms. the first part is moving in a nice straight line, nice straight speed. we could see problems here at the shore. this is a live picture. it's a nice day there. but it's not going to stay that way. tomorrow it will go downhill. sunday and monday are just going to be horrendous at the beaches. inconvenient, ugly at best. dangerous at worst. now you can see the track. moving nicely to the northeast. if it continued to do that, we would be in fine shape. but it's not. there's saturday at 8:00 p.m., near hurricane strength, if it's
4:03 pm
still tropical. sunday, 8:00 a.m., 65-mile-an-hour winds. not that far offshore. but it's not moving. there's sunday, monday, tuesday, even wednesday, it's still due east of new jersey. what happens when you have that? you've got the winds spinning around and coming right into the beaches. a long way in. the waters build up, and build up. and as long as this wind is coming out of the northeast or east, the water continues to pile up at the shore every high tide. so you have one high tide after another. that is going to be huge. and this is going to take days for that to move out. we've got a blocking pattern in the atmosphere that is not going to allow a normal track. here we are saturday 9:00 a.m.
4:04 pm
big rains to the south. but barely into philadelphia. and some models don't even give us any rain at all. but you can also see this model brings it back toward the coast. if that happens, sunday night and into monday, the winds will increase at the shore. the rain will start spreading back westward toward the philadelphia area. and so you've got heavy rain, with potential flooding at the shore, and coastal flooding, which is a sure bet. it's just a question of how bad that flooding is going to be. and there it is. monday night. big storm right offshore. it's going to take days before it moves out. we'll talk more about the impacts from the shore all the way toward the lehigh valley coming up in a little bit. >> glenn, thank you. our team coverage continues now at the jersey shore, where it

4:16 pm
first alert chief meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz is back now with a neighborhood-by-neighborhood look at how this storm could impact us this weekend. glenn? >> yeah, jacqueline, this picture shows you just how dramatic the change can be over just a few miles. look at the northern edge of the rain. in north carolina. not 20 miles north of it, it's sunny. that's the kind of difference we're going to see across our area as we go, especially into sunday. you can still see the circulation quite clearly. the inflow from the warm atlantic waters helping to keep it fueled. tropical storm warnings to the south. a tropical storm watch up in our area. and what it means, that tropical storm conditions are possible, 30 to 50-mile-an-hour winds at the shore, gusting to 60. that's tropical storm. goes all the way up to 73 miles an hour. potentially. so this is a fairly strong
4:17 pm
storm. the biggest problem, though, is that it's not going to continue tracking out to sea. it's going to stop, or maybe do a little curve around just offshore sunday, monday, tuesday, wednesday. and so that means day after day of high tides, and the water will not recede between the high tides. so just keeps going up and up. these are the tracks. remember that we've been saying, watch what happens here. they all do a curve. so one thing that might happen is the storm moves back closer to the shore. at the very least the rain moves back to the shore. the higher winds move closer, as we go into sunday. so tomorrow may not be that bad, not that windy, but just wait, there's saturday 9:00 a.m. the rain is still not around. may just barely get up to the philadelphia area in the evening.
4:18 pm
maybe not even raining there. but heavier rain, delaware beaches, the shore, that's the classic, that's the worst weather. # clock a.m. at the shore, heavy rain, strong winds. the storm then -- this model actually gets closer to the coast. and that would create even bigger problems. if this computer model is right, there is going to be some very serious flooding going on. not just from the rain, but the coastal flooding. it could be extremely high, and very dangerous. you could have roads cut off, and cars floating before this is all over with. and if i had plans to go to the shore this weekend, i wouldn't be going. i wouldn't want my family going down there either. the best it's going to be is ugly. the rain develops this afternoon -- or saturday afternoon, 15 to 30, with minor
4:19 pm
coastal flooding. but each day gets worse. winds 25 to 35 sunday. and monday the rain lingers at the shore. 35 to 55. major coastal flooding. is what i'm expecting. the p.m. rain and wind in delaware, at the jersey shore, some rain in the philadelphia area sunday. and dry inland on labor day. here we are talking about terrible weather, dangerous weather at the shore. and yet it might be dry even in philadelphia. there it is on monday. and i just have a little bit of rain in philly on sunday. no rain p.a. suburbs, lehigh valley, they don't see any rain all three days in those places. look at the jersey shore, rain saturday, heavy rain sunday, heavy rain monday, along with
4:20 pm
the winds, along with the chance of flooding, along with the coastal flooding. so you're going to have some people that say in reading by monday or tuesday, what storm. meanwhile, there may be evacuations that are going to be necessary at the jersey and delaware beaches. >> this is why that neighborhood forecast is so important. you said just a little rain in philadelphia on sunday. so we're not talking about an all-day washout in philadelphia? >> i don't think that at the moment. if that storm starts coming back toward the coast, that would spread the rain back. and there is a chance that it would be rain here in philadelphia, more than what we're predicting now. but other models keep the rain pretty much offshore. so that's why we have to watch this. because every mile that that storm is farther out to sea, the rain threat is less, every mile an hour that it's stronger, the rain and the wind get stronger. so small changes in the storm
4:21 pm
can be big changes in your neighborhood, because the gradient is so tight with this storm. >> you said if you're going to the shore, delaware beaches, don't. >> i certainly would not. i don't think the governor's come out and said anything yet. but i don't see any reason. i mean, my father lives down there. he's in a very sturdy building. i'm just going to tell him to hunker down for a few days. >> thanks, glenn. coming up now, phones on fire. the problem with samsung's new device that has been issuing a worldwide recall. cutting out chemicals. the change that will impact the zon soaps in your kitchens and bathrooms. one of the most dedicated and beloved teachers. a look at the closing bell on wall street. the major indexes all closed up to end the week.

first alert radar as it moved over south carolina, and heading our way next. bringing a big threat for your labor day weekend. right now, hermine is ruining plans for would-be beachgoers in north carolina. this is a live look at surf city. shows no one out there along the shore as the storm kicks up big waves. that's how our coastline will look soon. >> we have an army of meteorologists and reporters to keep you covered. let's go to meteorologist sheena parveen for what hermine is doing right now. >> hermine right now is moving into south carolina last night at 11:00 p.m. it made landfall in the florida panhandle. now you see the center spinning on the border of georgia and south carolina. winds sustained 50 miles per hour. it has downgraded to a tropical storm. it's moving to the northeast at 18 miles an hour. it's picked up a little bit of speed here. look at the rain, though, it extends all the way up through north carolina, about to move into virginia. still has a pretty good area of
4:31 pm
circulation, and some heavy rain in this as well. if we look at the stretch of rain from the very center of the storm, out to where we see the northern edge of the rain, it's about 365 miles to maybe 400 miles. so it is a very large area of rain. we'll start to see it move in as early as tomorrow. rainfall rates almost 1 1/2 inches. these areas dealing with the potential for localized flooding, and closer to the center we have buoys offshore estimating about -- picking up about 55-mile-an-hour wind gusts. seas about 10 feet. we expect a very high sea, rough surf as it gets closer to us. here's the center of it moving into south carolina. wind gusts on land close to 50 miles an hour. and we will see the windy conditions as we go through the weekend. conditions for tomorrow, especially sunday, will be deteriorating, especially if you are closer to the shore or the delaware beaches. the rain just to our south now, it's approaching virginia, and again, we'll see it continue to move north and move in tomorrow. tropical storm watch for the
4:32 pm
entire jersey shore, and sussex county, delaware, tropical storm conditions possible. winds 40 to 50 miles an hour, gusts closer to 60 miles an hour. that would be an onshore wind. flooding is going to be a major concern. tidal flooding is gb doing a huge concern. we'll talk more about the high tide times coming up. the most updated track with glenn "hurricane" schwartz. >> sheen a, the best weather at the shore is happening right now. the second best weather will happen tomorrow. and then it really goes downhill. this is a live picture of cape may. there are some folks on the beach. but not a whole lot. and by tomorrow, the weather is not going to be real pleasant. a lot of rain associated with this thing. and continues to track toward north carolina. it's not going to weaken that much, because much of the circulation is over water.
4:33 pm
and that helps fuel the storm. just because the center of it is over land, it doesn't mean it's just going to fall apart here. as it goes out into the warm atlantic waters, there's a gulf stream out here. temperatures above 80 degrees in that ocean. so it could restrengthen, or it could develop into kind of a mixed nor'easter type. but whatever it's going to do, it's not moving much. and that's the big problem. because it's day after day after day here. that's sunday, monday, tuesday, wednesday, practically have those numbers on top of each other. there's so little movement. so we look not only at the wind speed, but the direction, and the longer the fetch, the longer the period over water, the bigger the waves get. that storm surge that came into flori florida, sandy came because it was hundreds of miles of an onshore flow.
4:34 pm
this is a bad position to be in, and then for it to be stationary, that's bad, too. you need the wind coming offshore before the water can overall start going down. and that may not happen until wednesday. here's saturday morning. the rain still to the south. this could be a little bit of light rain coming up towards philadelphia tomorrow night. not expecting that much. and maybe not even any rain at all. certainly no rain farther to the north and west. while the shore starts getting it worse and worse and worse. and by sunday morning, that area in orange, that is tremendously heavy rain. enough rain to cause some flooding. and then this model brings the storm even closer to us, which would keep the winds up there. so at the shore, this is where the major problems are going to be. the rain develops saturday afternoon. minor coastal flooding.
4:35 pm
sunday i'm expecting moderate coastal flooding, as the winds increase. and the forecast is not official yet, but i'm concerned that we're going to have major coastal flooding by the time this is over with. and monday should be the peak winds, 35 to 55 miles an hour. we'll start breaking down the other areas that aren't going to get hit as hard coming up. count on nbc 10 to track hermine for you, until the threat is over. our meteorologists will be working around the clock bringing you the most up-to-date forecasts throughout the weekend. and remember, you can get the forecast for your neighborhood or holiday destination anytime on the nbc 10 app. sky force 10 is live over breaking news in northeast philadelphia where a car as you can see right here crashed into a home. george spencer is live onboard sky force 10 with more on this crash. george? >> reporter: yeah, jacqueline, hard to piece together exactly how this one occurred. but you see the car there pinned

and what happens is that it keeps pushing the water east to west. and depending on where this stalls, and it's even going to stall, or it's going to do some little loops, this is the new track, and it just came in. and so they finally have it moving out a little bit by tuesday. so that's good. sunday, monday, tuesday. if it stalls down in here, you could see some record flooding, coastal flooding in parts of south jersey and delaware. these are the high tide times. atlantic city, rehoboth. each one of these days, the tide is going to be higher. and the coastal flooding will be worse. you can see high tides get a little bit later each day. and you're going to get the water coming up at high tide. then it doesn't go down a whole lot. then it goes up for the next high tide. then it doesn't go down. up. this is the kind of thing that
4:48 pm
happened in 1962 with a nor'easter. caused an awful lot of flooding. minor tidal flooding late saturday, getting worse sunday and monday. in the back bays, going to be significant flooding. it's not going to go down. the water won't go down. it won't recede because the wind direction won't change. tidal flooding is possible up delaware bay, and into the delaware river, we could even see some flooding in philadelphia as some of this water comes up delaware bay. the track, as you can see, there's a lot of evidence of either a stall or curve where it comes back closer to the coast. and that is what is going to cause so many of these problems. so at the shore itself, minor coastal flooding saturday. moderate coastal flooding on sunday. major coastal flooding on monday. is what i'm predicting now. and that could be, again, very
4:49 pm
serious, to dangerous. to destructive. we're not just talking about a rainy weekend at the shore. it's way more than that. 82 degrees right now. philadelphia, as we go into tomorrow, it's not that bad. but toward the shore, it's a different story. take a look at this forecast here for your neighborhoods. and look at the difference. the p.a. suburbs, lehigh valley may not get a drop of rain. the whole weekend. even philadelphia may not get much at all. and if there is some, it's on sunday. but the jersey shore, delaware beaches are really going to get hammered here. i'm concerned about flooding, and if you have heavy rain, plus coastal flooding, the water hangs around even longer. it's not just a temporary thing. >> is there any chance this picks up in intensity as it reaches our area, or dies down, or it will remain as strong as
4:50 pm
it is? >> well, it could potentially get stronger. we haven't seen a storm like this coming up from the gulf of mexico, into the atlantic, and then stall. usually when they come up in this direction, they're moving fast. and they just race out to sea, and you get six hours of good wind and rain, and then it's gone. but you very rarely have a fast-moving storm that hits a block, and stops. and that causes the storm to stall, and spin around. so it's just a question of where it stalls. is long island going to get the worst of it? north jersey? south jersey? somebody's going to get hit real hard. >> just sitting out there. glenn, thank you. it's a big weekend as you know in philadelphia with the made in america festival here in town. rihanna, cold play, designer, next, what organizers are saying how the weather could impact the show.
