she tried to run him over last week. police say after being shot, avila drove off, crashing into a police van. her charges include dui andin aggravated assault. students showed off a check at the performing arts high school on front street. the money will go to the philadelphia education fund. more than a thousand students will benefit from the grant which will help students succeed in college. and school funding was the focus of a sing-in in center city today. more than a dozen performers took the stage in support of fair funding for public schools across pennsylvania. >> poor kids and minority kids are in school districts that lack the resources to make sure every single one of them can be prepared to be our next

a weekend of september 11th tributes capped off today with a ceremony of national law enforcement officers memorial in washington, dc. >> walter weaver. james godby. >> the names of 72 officers killed on 9/11 in the line of duty were read aloud. participants read off the 13 officers who died from subsequent illnesses related to recovery efforts. these students at north wilmington springer middle school hosted police officers and firefighters from all over delaware. police agencies brought their gear and vehicles to show the students and the students gave them a plaque thanking them for

right now at 5:30, new details about a toddler who was shot and killed in bucks county. >> police say the victim was 2-year-old benjamin austin smith. investigators are still not saying how the shooting happened. >> nbc 10's deanna durante is live at the scene in milford township. deanna, what have you learned? >> reporter: we do know police have gotten their search warrant. they've spent the last hour inside the home here. they've also been talking to the boy's father and the boy's grandparents. >> it is very upsetting. >> reporter: she's lived here for five years and said she never saw the little boy who lived across from her house, never knew he lived there until today. >> in this area there's no reason to have a gun anywhere, that any child could get ahold of. >> reporter: those who leave near the scene are not sure how 2-year-old benjamin austin smith died.

>> i got a call from my brother who works here. he said he heard a 2-year-old was accidentally shot with a loaded gun. >> reporter: state police are not confirming how the boy was shot and say the only person who was in the house at the time of the shooting was his father, nicholas weily. police say the home is owned by benjamin's grandparents. they were seen arriving here towing a camper yesterday afternoon. you can see live now that two state troopers are still standing at the front door of the home. we can also tell you state police were seen searching the front and back seats of the pickup truck that the grandparents arrived in. as for the boy's mother, police tell us she lives out of state and has been notified about her son's death. deanna durante, nbc 10 news. a camden county man is accused of using his neighbor's wi-fi to download child porn.

police arrested him after searching his home earlier this month. they say the neighbor's wi-fi was not password protected and they say he used it to download porn to his laptop. something is missing from your neighborhood forecast. if you saw it here or looked it up on the nbc 10 app, you probably noticed not a lot of rain. >> meteorologist krystal klei is joining us now. you're keeping an eye on the dry conditions. what should we know about this? >> that's exactly right. this is a look at the map created by the united states drought monitor. you're seeing the drought levels here. yellow now over parts of our area. we haven't seen measurable rain since september 1st and before that, we hadn't seen any since august 21st. so there has not been a lot of rain to go around. what we're looking at now, a closer look at the map showing that much of new jersey into parts of philadelphia, even into

the lehigh valley all now categorized as abnormally dry. that is one step below moderate drought, something we'll have an eye on as these reports continue to come out. at this point it's showing us our conditions are drier than they should be. in fact, look at these blow average annual prescription numbers that we've got on the board here. philadelphia almost four inches below where we should be at this point in the year. reading almost at six inches. look at trenton, new jersey, seven inches lower than is typical. in allentown, 4.6 inches. the numbers just keep going here. in delaware, not categorized under that abnormally dry, only a half inch below. mt. pocono, three inches below. interestingly, atlantic city, 3.2 inches above average totals. in philadelphia, a ten-inch

investigators say security bars might have trapped a family inside a burning house in tennessee. nine family members died. a child remains in critical condition. six other children are among the dead in memphis. firefighters say the flames broke out in the living room this morning. someone from inside the home called 911 but the family members couldn't open the security bars in time to escape. it took 15 minutes for firefighters to pull them out, but by that time most of the victims had suffered smoke inhalation. a 6-year-old boy was burned when a recalled galaxy note 7 phone blew up in his hands. >> nbc 10 spoke with the boy's grandfather. >> reporter: john lewis said the fire set off the smoke alarm in the brooklyn home. when firefighters arrived, they issued this emergency call.

>> announcer: now your nbc 10 first alert weather. well, a comfortable day today after a cool start this morning. temperatures still fairly cool this afternoon with a nice breeze and very low humidity. 80 for the pennsylvania suburbs, philadelphia area coming in in the low 80s, as well as delaware neighborhoods. south jersey has some spots where temperatures are in the upper 70s still. pitman, 79. medford, 78 degrees. mt. laurel coming in at 80. florence is 75 degrees, robbinsville, 76. very comfortable right now. the average high for this time of the year is actually 80 degrees. so we are even a little bit below that in some of our neighborhoods. tomorrow morning, we're going to have another cool start. some areas will be dropping into the 50s. you'll notice it getting cooler quickly tonight when the sun goes down.

clear skies, dry air, will allow our temperatures to drop off pretty fast. tomorrow morning, areas like lehigh valley, coatsville, in the mid-60s. dover, 59 degrees. philadelphia area, coming in around 63. atlantic city in the mid-60s. so another comfortable start to the day. tomorrow, we'll see a big jarm up with by the middle of the week. by wednesday, the 90s will return. the humidity going to come back with it. by wednesday it will feel a lot more like summer. then we'll go into thursday and it will start to feel more like fall. we have a big cooldown coming from wednesday to thursday. you will definitely notice it. here's a look at future temperatures across the area, future air masses. 90s return by wednesday. a lot of hot hair coming in from the south. that's all ahead of a cold front. once that cold front moves through, wednesday night to thursday morning, that cooler air mass moves in. high temperatures on thursday will be in the upper 70s. friday, only around 80 degrees.

so it's going to be getting nice again at the end of the week. today, we got from the mid- to low 80s. wednesday we'll jump up to 93. remember, that cold front will swing through. by thursday, upper 70s. huge cooldown with that average high of 80 degrees. by friday, right around average as we go into your weekend. for now, we'll stay nice and dry. we'll stay dry as we go through basically the whole week until we get to the end of the weekend. this high pressure will be responsible for helping us stay dry today, tomorrow, and wednesday. a weak cold front will try to move through, bringing very little in the way of rain chances. it will help to knock those temperatures down. 87 degrees tomorrow for fairmount. allentown coming in at 85 degrees. plenty of sunshine tomorrow, another nice day, a little bit warmer in the afternoon. robbinsville, 84 degrees.
