a fried chicken restaurant in elizabeth. >> let's begin with nbc 10's cydney long live in union county. cydney, you were there just minutes after the suspect was arrested. what are you seeing? >> reporter: jackie and jim, we do know the suspect, ahmad khan rahami, remains hospitalized. he has undergone surgery. we know from authorities that he will be charged with attempted murder. police keep pushing back a planned press conference. we're now five hours from his capture. there is still several layers of crime tape and several layers of law enforcement here along elizabeth avenue in linden. they have been connecting evidence through the day as it may be tied to a number of crimes. we're about four to five blocks away from the porch of that colombian restaurant where he took refuge in the overnight rain. the sound of gunfire. >> pow, pow, pow! >> reporter: it erupted in this

working class neighborhood of linden just after 11:00 on monday. police and s.w.a.t. it seems to me, some with machine guns, swarmed the street. witnesses with cellphones in hand captured this video of bombing suspect ahmad khan rahami on a stretcher. he was shot in the leg by police after he opened fire, shooting two officers. >> allegedly he was sleeping, yeah, right across the street from where my truck was parked. i didn't even notice him at first. >> reporter: for a long time, linden resident michael, who didn't wish to share his last name, said it was surreal. >> i was standing right here, i heard the gunshots but didn't see it right away. >> reporter: rahami took shelter ten minutes away from where the fbi was raiding his home above his family's chicken restaurant in elizabeth. a business owner awoke the man on the porch and dialled 911. when police arrived, rahami opened fire, striking a police officer whose bullet proof vest protected him. another officer was injured by glass. >> i was getting my car

blacher in our newsroom. >> we traced rahami's records back to his 18th birthday. he appears to have been living in the u.s., in new jersey. >> reporter: the man law enforcement say is at the center of a mass bombing conspiracy is 28 years old. he's believed to be the man seen in this surveillance taken saturday night in new york's chelsea neighborhood. ahmad khan rahami was born in afghanistan and naturalized as a u.s. citizen. he came to the u.s. in 1995, seeking asylum. it was granted in 2011. senior law enforcement officials tell nbc news rahami and his family have traveled to pakistan and presumably afghanistan multiple times in the last decade. >> i do not have information yet to show what the path of radicalization was. >> reporter: rahami was a college student at middlesex county college in new jersey from 2010 to 2012, a criminal justice major, but never

graduated. during his college years he lived in perth amboy, new jersey. his only brush with the court system was in small claims court. he owed several thousand dollars to creditors. he has virtually no social media presence. he appears to have been living with relatives and working at a family-owned fried chicken restaurant. he has as many as five family members living outside of new york city. as to whether he has any terrorist ties -- >> we have no knowledge but the investigation continues. >> at 5:00 we'll look at what could be a trigger point, a feud between the family and the city of elizabeth, new jersey. i'm mitch blacher, nbc 10 news. >> okay, mitch. in a matter of three days bombs were found and detonated in four places before the alleged bomber was taken into custody. saturday morning this was the scene in seaside park after a pipe bomb in a trash can exploded. it happened just minutes before

a 5k charity race for marines was to take place. no one was injured. in the chelsea neighborhood of manhattan, this video shows people running after a bomb went off there. an unexploded pressure cooker was found blocks away in a suitcase. police detonated it at a nearby gun range. >> early this morning, a police robot detonated a pipe bomb at the train station at elizabeth, new jersey. the bomb went off unexpectedly while the robot was cutting the wires. and 28-year-old ahmad khan rahami was arrested after a shootout. you can see rahami there on the ground in handcuffs. president obama today commented on this weekend's explosion. >> the president said the investigation into the attacks is moving rapidly. while the motivate for the bombings is still unclear, mr. obama stressed the fight against isis will continue. >> we will continue to lead the

global coalition in the fight to destroy isil, which is instig e instigating a lot of people over the internet to carry out attacks. we are going to continue to go after them. we're going to take out their leaders. we're going to take out their infrastructure. >> the president is in new york for the annual u.n. general assembly gathering. the president also commented on this weekend's stabbing at a mall in minnesota. nine people were injured by a lone attacker dressed as a prior to security guard. officials are investigating the attack as a potential terrorist incident. however, investigators don't believe there is any link between the stabbing and the explosions. three of the nine victims are still in the hospital. the suspect was shot and killed. count on nbc 10 for continuing coverage of the bombing suspect's arrest. at 4:30, nbc 10's monique braxton will speak to residents who witnessed the arrest. and a retired fbi spokesman will

join us to talk about the targeting of so-called soft targets. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues with the shooting rampage friday night in philadelphia that left a woman dead and several people injured, including two police officers. >> and today nbc 10 has learned new information about the so-called rambling note the suspect left behind. nicholas glenn was captured on surveillance video, gun in hand, walking calmly through west philadelphia after one of the shootings. glenn opened fire on a philadelphia police sergeant. he then shot a penn police officer as officers searched for him. he also shot and killed a woman as she sat in her car with her boyfriend. >> we were over the scene. police are still trying to figure out a motivate. deanna durante is learning new information about evidence the suspect left behind.

deanna? >> reporter: 25-year-old nicholas glenn is shown calmly walking along a west philadelphia street. a gun appears in his right hand. in the left, it appears as if he's tossing something near sansom street. law enforcement sources say they found a spent magazine clip in the area and think glenn reloaded his weapon just before he shot two people in a passing car, killing one woman. sources say glenn had multiple magazines on him and reloaded during his fatal shootout with police. this afternoon, we got more information about a rambling note police say they found on him. we learned in the note glenn talks in the third person, referring to himself as "solo tattoo tears." the note contained lines like, "solo tattoo tears went to his probation officer" and "sent in for another mental health evaluation" and "walking among the doomed population."

sources say the note gave no indication as to why he chose friday night to fire at a police officer, or shoot at two people in bar in west philly. police say he refers to his defense attorney as his spokesperson. they say it's clear he was angry at his probation officer but gives no hint why he would go out and harm civilians. we have learned police searched a relative's home over the weekend where they say they found ammunition as well as a computer. investigators are currently reviewing the writings on that computer. live in west philadelphia, deanna durante, nbc 10 news. team coverage continues with nbc 10's tim furlong live at pen penn-hospital. tim? >> reporter: two officers say they had an army of guardian

angels. here here at penn-presbyterian. one officer has been released and the other is hoped to be released in the newer feature. sylvia young's bullet proof vest certainly saved her life. a 19-year veteran of the philly police force, she's listed in stable condition. eddie miller's wife said he would talk to us later tonight but today he is resting at home. he was shot in the hip and ankle and he and another officer cornered the gunman in an alley. we're still waiting for more specific information about sergeant young's condition and her estimated release date from the hospital. we're also trying to learn more about the 36-year-old boyfriend of the woman killed in the car. he's expected to survive, although he's in critical condition. tonight the f.o.p. is holding a monday night tailgate party. the proceeds of the event, we're

george washington bridge to punish the democratic mayor of ft. lee for not endorsing christie's reelection. christie is not charged in the case but he may be called to testify. this morning the governor held a town hall in whip pany. the governor is proposing an amendment to the state constitution that would give every single school district the exact same amount of state aid per student. georgia congressman and civil rights icon george lewis was in camden, discussing gun violence. he joined community leaders and during his speech, he thanked police officers for their service, for not giving up, and for keeping the faith. he also realized his time working side by side with dr. martin luther king jr. >> we must find ways to teach people the way of peace, the way of love, the way of nonviolence.

>> tonight, lewis receives the 2016 liberty medal at the national constitution center, awarded to those who strive to secure liberty for people around the world. it was the blind leading the blind. harsh words from the attorney representing the victims from the 2013 deadly market street collapse during opening statements today. six people died, 13 were hurt in june of 2013 were hurt at 22nd and market. the unbraced wall was part of a vacant building being torn down next to the store. among the defendants, excavator operator sean benshop and griffin campbell. they're both serving jail time for their roles in the collapse. today in court one of the defense attorneys called for a mistrial, which was denied by the judge. we continue to follow breaking news. the arrest of a suspect in bombings this weekend in new york and new jersey. >> here's what we know right now. ahmad khan rahami was arrested following a shootout with police

this morning in linden, new jersey. this is video from a security camera of rahami running from police before his capture. officials say evidence links the 28-year-old to bomb blasts saturday in seaside park, new jersey, and the chelsea neighborhood of new york. another device found in new york city did not explode. a federal law enforcement official says all three bombs had one component in common, a flip-style cellphone. investigators say they've found no evidence so far that rahami was part of a broader terrorist cell. >> announcer: now your nbc 10 first alert weather. we had some much-needed rain across the entire area. some places got too much including the jersey shore. but things are quieting down now. there is another area of heavier rain that's moved into southern delaware, which has also gotten hit pretty hard. you can see that rain is not about to end down there. you can see this extends all the way down into north carolina. but the whole system is gradually going to be moving to

the east. and i emphasize the word "gradually." look at some of these rainfall amounts, over three inches at dennis township, over three inches. ventner, well over three inches. parts of long beach island, over four inches of rain. brant beach close to four inches. that's too much rain in just one day. so the rain is slowly going to move out. and then we get back into a dry pattern. the last rain we had was the first day of the month. then we had rain today. it looks like we're going to stay dry, at least through the weekend. so this is it for a while for most of us. there's going to be a little bit more in southern delaware and south jersey as we go through the evening, maybe a few little sprinkles in and around the philadelphia area. nothing big. but the clouds are going to linger. more showers coming in for

tomorrow morning in southern delaware and south jersey. but that area does not come to the north. and it's a much nicer day in the lehigh valley than it is in philadelphia. philadelphia is a much nicer day, getting farther to the south. you can see that on our rain chances in philadelphia and in dover, it's pretty low. atlantic city has a pretty high rain chance tomorrow. and reading, just about zero for rain chances the rest of the week. so we have the cloudy skies. chestnut hill, 83 degrees. some sunshine farther to the north like lehigh valley, temperatures into the mid-80s tomorrow, feeling like summertime. farther to the south, it's a different story. that's why we do all your neighborhood forecasts, sometimes it varies tremendously. only 74 with rain at long port. 77 and rain at avalon. rehoboth beach, rain and thunderstorms at 78 degrees.

running from police before his capture this morning in linden, new jersey. the 28-year-old was hit in the leg during a shootout with officers. the fbi says they have directly linked rahami to devices found in new york and seaside park, new jersey saturday. authorities tracked him down after a man discovered rahami asleep in the doorway of a bar in linden. they say fingerprints and surveillance video helped investigators identify him. authorities say they have no reason to believe there are more bombs to be found or more suspects to be arrested. >> big police presence remains in linden, new jersey, where rahami was taken into custody this morning. the shootout with the suspect happened not long after police raideding his home above a restaurant in the town of elizabeth. nbc 10 has team coverage of the arrest. in a couple of minutes a retired fbi spokesman will join us to talk about the suspect. >> let's begin with monique braxton live in union county. monique, i know you spoke with people who witnessed the takedown of the suspect. >> reporter: that's right, jacqueline.

we're awaiting a press conference right now near where rahami was arrested. all day long i have been talking to people who witnessed the shootout with police. >> i heard two pops. i thought something had fallen off the back of a truck. >> reporter: the violent capture of 28-year-old ahmad khan rahami plays out before the eyes of people who live here in linden. >> i saw a box truck, a cop behind him, and two officers running behind the doors and shooting. >> reporter: the bombing suspect was found sleeping in the doorway of a tavern by its owner. >> he was checking on his bar and seen him, called police. >> reporter: when linden police arrived, gunfire could be heard blocks away. we've learned two officers were hit, one in the vest. another by flying glass. rahami was hit in his leg and taken to a local hospital. new york's mayor says they believe rahami is behind the blast in chelsea, in manhattan.

that injured 29 people. and at least one explosion in new jersey. overnight, five pipe bombs were found in a trash can near the elizabeth train station. one was detonated when a robot tried to disarm it. those pipe bombs are similar to the one that exploded in seaside park but they have not been rink to rahami. >> i'm glad they caught him, he could have been targeting the linden train station or going somewhere else. >> reporter: back live now, we're just getting word from the fbi that two police officers from linden were in fact shot and are going to be okay. the fbi also tells us rahami doesn't appear to be part of an organized group but authorities do confirm they're questioning as many as five people from elizabeth, new jersey, who were stopped in a car associated with rahami. as soon as police gives an update, we'll have that information for you. live from linden, monique

braxton, nbc 10 news. >> for further analysis on these bombings, we're joined by j.j.klaver, a retired spokesman for the philadelphia fbi. >> thanks for being here. walk us through how sophisticated this was, how difficult is it to use homemade explosives to go after these soft targets? >> unfortunately we would like to think it's harder than it is. but it is really not that difficult to come up with the components you need. they're readily available to make the explosives. in this day and age, to get commercially available or military grade explosives is still very difficult. but to get the requisite chemicals needed to make something that's going to explode, get it into a pressure cooker, put shrapnel in it, it's not very sophisticated. groups put it out online. it's information readily available for anyone who wants to find it on the internet. it's not very sophisticated, really, in making this. there's, you know, some planning in the logistics of it, obviously, and getting these

devices scattered in the way they were. but sophisticated, not very. >> authorities have really downplayed any talk of the suspect being part of a cell or there being any connection to isis, that's always the first question that comes about. how do they go about determining whether he was radicalized? >> i think that's going to take some time. obviously he's now in custody and he's going to be interviewed, if he hasn't already, once he's cleared medically. i think, you know, if he cooperates and provides information, a lot of it will come through that. also forensically, putting together the pieces from all of his cellphones and e-mails and looking at him digitally, trying to trace, you know, his communications electronically, and also working with afghan authorities, now that they know he's traveled frequently to the place of his birth, afghanistan, try and see if they have any information about people they might have met with or groups he might have a part of or sympathetic too. after the fact it's hard to put together, say, a browsing history of someone's internet

moved into the washington area, baltimore. it's moving up in this direction. the general trend is for drying, although parts of southern delaware and extreme south jersey will keep getting more rain for a couple of days. we're looking in new jersey. the closer you are to philadelphia, the less rain you had. cherriville over an inch. mehlville over three inches of rain. this is just today. ho hopewell township over two inches of rain. it would have been nice if it balanced out a little bit. but some places -- look at that, leesport over three inches. easton and bethlehem less than one inch of rain. so we did have that much-needed rain during the day today. we have not had much during the

last several weeks. it's just been -- we haven't gotten this, in the entire month put together. but now the dry pattern is going to return. as soon as this rain moves out, it's going to dry out again. here we go, as we go through the evening, there is some more rain in south jersey, just patchy areas of it. we have lingering clouds tomorrow. don't expect a lot of sunshine unless you're out of town and points north. then we're dry. and we finally get some sunshine on wednesday. the temperature trend is going to be affected by that, only 73 today, 79 tomorrow with the clouds. and then it starts getting warmer as we head toward the rest of the week. watch what happens, as we go through the night tonight, it's drying out up to the north. and we continue to see some moisture down to the south. look at that, atlantic city

one viewer's attempt to end her wireless data plan didn't stop the bills from coming. >> our nbc 10 responds reporter got to the bottom of it. >> she put money down for an ipad and data plan. after she cancelled her service, she continued to receive bills. that's when nbc 10 responds got involved. >> reporter: barbara spends most of her time at home on disability. a few months ago she decided to cancel her ipad data plan and just use wi-fi. >> it was a waste of money. they said if i want to cancel internet, i need to cancel everything. i said okay. >> reporter: she paid $747 to buy out the ipad and end the

>> announcer: nbc 10 breaking news. now at 5:00, the man suspected of planting a series of bombs in new york and new jersey is under arrest. investigators say they have every reason to believe this was terrorism but they think the suspect was acting alone. >> thanks to a little luck and a lot of police work, no one was killed in these attacks. here's what we've learned so far. the suspect, 28-year-old ahmad khan rahami. the surveillance video shows him running from police before he was hit during a shootout with officers in linden, new jersey.

authorities tracked him down after a man discovered rahami asleep in the doorway of a bar. investigators say evidence links rahami to the bomb blast at seaside park, new jersey and manhattan on saturday. nbc news just spoke with arera i rahami's father who said he had no idea his son was plotting this. in a matter of three days, bombs were found or detonated in three different located. here they are. last night, five devices were found at a train station in elizabeth. investigators have yet to publicly tie rahami to those devices and say they're still gathering evidence. >> we have reporters looking into every angle of the story. let's begin with the latest details on his arrest. nbc 10's cydney long is live in linden, new jersey where he was caught this morning. cydney? >> reporter: jacqueline, good afternoon. authorities tell us it was a 911 call that led police to a bar about five blocks from where we're standing here
