and we're watching to see if the hurricane will have any impact. sunshine could be in our near future, but matthew could impact us down the line. >> two big stories, us seeing that system move out, going to see breaks of sunshine, but also tracking right now. hurricane activity sunshine breaking through finally. just a little patch of blue you see. same in the lehigh valley. cloudines cloudiness, but some sun. we're at 66 degrees in the lehigh valley. temperatures are going to bump up into the 70s this afternoon thanks to some of o the sunshine. much warmer than what we saw over the weekend.

75 in philadelphia and 74 in the suburbs as well as in delaware. then your cloutds and radar massachusetts although not showing up great on satellite, you can see they're still there. talking a look at hurricane massachusetts, now, we've dropped in. still a category 4. going to take a look at the updated hurricane track. we'll talk more about how it may affect us here at home. >> i'll see you then. the impact of matthew in the caribbean catastrophic. gabe gutierrez reports from haiti. >> reporter: overnight, one of the most powerful atlantic hurricanes in almost a decade pounded more of the caribbean. matthew slamming into southern haiti. and drenching parts of jamaica.

triggering life threatening flash floods. the coast of colombia and aruba seeing monster surges. winds at 160 miles an hour. this morning, matthew was a violent category 4, washing away home, roads and bridges. eastern cuba also bracing for a direct hit. more than half a million people in matthew's path at the u.s. naval base at guantanamo bay, nonessential employees have been evacua evacuated. it is impoverished haiti struggling to rebuild after the massive earthquake six years ago facing the most devastation. rain could spawn deadly mudslides. >> back here at the desk now. typically, when these things happen, it's the shore areas that seem to get the brunt of the effects of hurricane like this. >> that's right.

we're watch iing that hurricane because of the fact that way down the line, it may affect us. let's look at the different model projections. this is going to track through the next week here, so you see thursday, friday, nearing parts of florida, then by saturday nearing the carolinas, the models are pretty much in agreement with thachlt but look at where they go. they're all over the place, so, there is a possibility that we could see the effect of heavy rain, rough surf or storm surge, but it's too far out to awith certain thety that's going to happen. some models toss it back out to see. that's something we'll be closely tracking this entire week. >> looks like spaspaghetti. >> all over the place. >> thank you. westchester pike is back open after a deadly accident near the 69th street transportation terminal. a person was hit by a car at the intersection of westchester pike and garrett road before 7:00 this morning. police are not telling us what happened. but a witness say this is a dangerous intersection. >> people don't use crosswalks. that's part of the problem.

it's a long route around. a lot of time, they like to cut akrotsz the tracks to get over to the terminal. zpl we're working to learn more about the crash and victim and we'll update the information as we get it. two police cars were respond tog a call when they crashed into each other in philadelphia's gray's fairy neighborhood last night. this happened around 7:00 near south 26th street. the one officer u was hurt, but refused treem. no one else was hurt. and accept ta is back to a regular schedule today. that doesn't mean everything is normal for riders. more on what this means for commuters. >> hey, on this the first day of returning to a norm weekday schedule, we have seen a few outbound trains running 15 to 20

minutes late. >> some schools are off. this return to the normal weekday followed months of frustration according to riders. in july, the silver lining five was pulled when a defect or crack was noted. it was pushed to a weekend schedule. today, back to a normal weekday schedule, but the transit authority isn't back at full capacity yet. only 50 of the silver liner rs repaired. they say it's still using leased rail cars to cover its route. >> the first day back and i'm going to be late to work because of the adjustment, so -- >> i missed the silver lining cars. they were more comfortable. i would like to see the trains run on time. >> i'd rather take the train and drive ten minutes from my apartment and not deal with traffic.

construction and typically, look at this drive time from route 29 towards the -- that's usually a shorter travel time. we have travel speeds in the 20s. travel times would be around eight the nine to ten minutes. road closure, new castle county, are still working with us. they're still in play right now and affecting morning traffic. especially right around airport road between highway 37 and route 202 specifically. how can we get around this? simply take route 58 toward 95 from philadelphia or 295 to get to new jersey to bypass these road closures. we're look iing at an accident lower merion. so far, no report of problems or delay, but it's been a very busy morning, back to you. new video this morning of a robbery at a philadelphia cell phone store. police hope you can help identify this man who held up the metro pcs store on wadsworth avenue in the city's west oakley

neighborhood. investigators say the man pointed a plastic gun u bag in the shape of a gun at an employee and demanded money. the suspect took off with some cash and police in northeast philadelphia are looking for a bank robber. the man went into the tv bank on wood haven road last thursday. handed the teller a a note demanding cash. then ran out of the bank with money. anyone who recognizes this robber is asked to call police or the fbi. philadelphia orchestra strike is over. they reached a tentative deal on a three-year contract yesterday afternoon. that contract includes salary increases each year. members staged a walk out friday night, canceling an opening night performance on the krot tomorrow. today, you can get a free flu shot if you live in camden county, you can head to the fire hall on lewis avenue from 3:30 to 6:30 this evening. no out of pocket costs.

ten is the max, so that means it's clear out there as you're driving along. om areas still maybe light fog or low clouds, three miles in northeast philadelphia, but overall, things are looking much bert. in fact, the sun has been starting to break through. we still have low clouds hanging around, so we're not talking just purely sunny sky, but we are talking more of a cloud and some sun mix, so you can expect throughout the day. this is better than it's been throughout the week, so we've got to take it where we can. you're going to see that thick cloud layer is really just offshore at this point and as a result, finally, look at all the clear air we see. now tracking showers. it's not likely we'll see much if anything today into tomorrow. very isolated chances of rain at best with those clouds breaking apart. temperatures as a result are warmer than they have been this quite some time. we're at 68 degrees in

philadelphia. wilmington and dover have made it to 70 and we're at 67, atlantic city. that's where we are right now. compare this to 24 hours ago. and across the board, we are warmer than yesterday of course. four degrees warmer in philadelphia. six degrees warmer in trenton as well as wilmington and that's going to continue here throughout the rest of your afternoon. temperatures bumping up more. you can check the bottom of your screen with for your neighborhood. some clouds will be hanging around. this isn't a complete clear out. there are your lunchtime on our future model. spot chances of rain, very isolated through your mid afternoon and then scattered clouds, partly cloudy into your evening as well. not likely to see much in terms of rain. tuesday, but we'll leave in the isolated chance of showers  again. very spotty rolling through about your lunchtime there and into the afternoon, more likelihood we'll see spot showers near the shore. that's what we're looking at for our forecast in the short-term. let's talk long-term.

collaboration works to help overcome loss and tragedy to a very moving performance. it's called salt soul and it debuts in philadelphia later this week. the dance and theatre artist behind salt soul is here with jermaine ingram, one of the lab raters involved in the pop up performances. thank you so much for being here. let's start with you. you were inspire d through a fe tragedies in your life and some incidents you witnessed firsthand. tell us about that. >> yeah, my loss and second one is few years ago, 22nd and market the collapsed building and the other one two years ago, disaster. so, that was a really different sort of loss. >> tell us how those events we're looking at video here of the collapse buildi ining a cou of years ago.

tell us how these events play a role in this performance. >> yeah. >> sure, each of these events inspires music and dance. video. we use some clips from the disaster itself at 22nd and market street. it's inspired, a sight specific performance, but play across the entire facility in asian arts initiative. what we do is try to build in ourselves a sense of empathy for people who have lost loved ones in these disasters. and we're showing the connection among us, the collaborators, hopefully build a sense of collective empathy and grief.

across the audiences for people who have suffered through loss of loved ones and the loss of his father 31 years ago, in the loss of 22nd street three years ago and in the losses in south korea two years ago. >> i won't pretend to know anything about dance daps as an art form, but this is you. your performance. how difficult must it be to perform pieces that come from tragedy? >> yeah. i mean, i feel like you know, i'm dancing, what i want to do. and then that tragic happened and then i actually 22nd when

that collapse building and i wasn't there and then so i one moved there and i wanted the to speak how do artists can speak when tragic happens. from there, i start to rebuild and then i met jermaine and we talk about how we can make peace an then share the space. >> do you find people find solace in witnesses performance like this? >> we found that. we've done some short performances. one at the sight of the disaster at 22nd street. and another on bill wood plaza. the one at 22nd street was attend eed by the family of onef the victims of the 22nd street disaster and what we heard back from them was that the performance spoke to them in a way that words can't. >> well, you can check out performances on this thursday, friday and saturday at 8:00 p.m.

bit here in center city. >> yes, finally. i was starting to get worried that maybe the tops of the buildings were gone because it had been so many days since we've seen them, but they're there. the clouds are still hanging overhead, but they're not as low. visibility back to where it should be after a very foggy morning out there. so. philadelphia looking good. still gray, but we are seeing spots of sunshine. in fact, about an hour aerk i saw some blue on the board. that has since grayed out again. temperaturewise, spots of sunshine peeking now, we're at 68 degrees, which is warmer than the high over the last several days. a lot of us are looking warmer. 70, dover. 69, wilmington. 67 for atlantic city, so temperatures are tarting to move into the upper 60s with the expectation that today, we'll make our way into the low to mid-70s. while we have some low mid level clouds in place which don't pick up great on satellite, the

thicker cloud coverage has moved off the shore and we are no longer looking at rain. isolated chances the rest of today and spot chances tuesday for the forecast but, aside from the cloudiness, we're going to be tracking hurricane matthew. this is the update from 11:00 a.m. showing winds have picked up to 140 miles per hour, higher than we saw this morning. also moving to the north. a category 4. a major hurricane. we're going to look at the track of where the system will go, how it will affect parts of the caribbean and the direction coming up in just a bit. all right. thank you. meanwhile, haiti is preparing for the worst from hurricane matthew. haiti of course shares the island with the dominican republic. the island nation is still struggling to rebuild after the massive earthquake six years ago. up to 40 inches of rain in some areas could spawn deadly mudslides. the toll some fear would be catastrophic.

in honor of the latest deadly train crash in hoboken there injured more than 100 and killed a woman standing on the platform, investigators have now interviewed the engineer who was at the controls. tom costello has the latest. >> reporter: this morning, photos from the ntsb show iing e extensive damage inside the station that has kept invest dwaters from gaining access to much of the train. over the weepd, they interviewed the engineer, who told investigator, he had gotten plenty of sleep before the crash. he said his phone was in his backpack and the train and brakes were working normally. >> he was he was operating at 10 miles per hour when pentering te station track. he says he has no memory of the accident. he remembers waking up on the floor of the cab. >> ten miles p per hour is the posted speed limb, but witnesses say the train was going much

faster. another setback, the first black box retrieved wasn't working. no recording of the train's actual speed or braking action. interest ga meanwhile, the body of the 34-year-old mother who died in the crash is now back in brazil for burial. immediately after the crash, rahan perkins knelt beside her waiting for paramedics. >> i told her just breathe, focus on your family, your loved ones. i'm here. i'm not going to leave you. she fought. she did try her best. >> also, renewed focus on the transit safety record. they were so krped about the culture, they began sinking awe dids over the summer, planting dozens of violations and ordering immediate fixes. >> so, i believe on initial look that there's a lack of culture and safety.

>> that was tom costello reporting. no comment from new jersey transit. sources are pointing to the similarities with last year's crash in philadelphia who killed eight, including an engineer who can't remember what happened and witnesses say the train entered the station far too fast. zblnchs four people are under arrest after a second night of protests against police shootings in los angeles. these protests erupted after a peaceful prayer vigil for an 18-year-old shot and kill birthday by police on saturday. that shooting sparked protests in south los angeles and in front of the mayor's home. in south jersey, justice for a murdered 3-year-old will now wait until next year. he was killed last fall. his father's trial was supposed to begin today but his defense was granted more time to give expert reports. to prosecutors.

the attorney says the forensics on how little brendan died were panelled poorly by the medical examiner. his parents believe him innocent. they spoke to our o sidney long outside the camden court. >> people really do have to dissect that question. why. there's no reason. there's no rhyme of reason. no motive. no reason why this father would take his son's life. >> brendan's grandparents plan to honor the anniversary of his death, which is ten days from now. they're holding a mass on saturday, october 15th. at the holy savior church. robbed at gunpoint inside a hotel room overseas. that's what kim kardashian says happened to her last night. a spokeswoman for kardashian says she was in her hotel room in paris when two armed and masked men dressed as police officers held her up. nbc news is looking into reports that she was tied up by the men as they stole millions of dollars in jewelry.

the tv star says she's badly shaken, but physically unharmed. ♪ >> i'm sorry. family emergency, i have to stop the show. >> her husband who was performing at a music fest value in new york city ended his show when he heard about the attack. you can hear him apologizing saying he had a family emergency before walk iing off the stage. in wisconsin, more than 30 schoolbuses are destroyeded after a fire broke out in a transport facility in milwaukee. a woman said she heard several explosions over the course of an hour, then saw lots of smoke. nearly two dozen fire departments responded to the fire. all of the buses were used by area school districts and the company is now working with the districts to find other transportation for students. the cause of the fire is under investigation. a close call for spectators at a houston car show.

this happened as the driver of this mustang was leaving a ooent and hit the gas and spun out. just missing a crowd of dozens along the curb of the street. fortunatelily, didn't hurt anyone. witnesses say if it wasn't for the curb, the incident would have been much worse. october is breast cancer awareness month. the road to recovery can mean chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, but a philadelphia woman is offering a unique service for women battling the deadly disease. pamela osborne explains how it works. >> patricia fox has beaten breast cancer and now, she's hoping the service she offers other survivors will help them feel more powerful than their disease. it may not look like medicine to you, but the tools you see here heal. >> are you ready? >> just ask three-time iraqi war veteran, kathleen doyle. >> i have eyelashes again.

joined by dr. pa tell, a recon truktive surgeon at the fox chase cancer center. they're here with their dogs. thank you both for being here. let's start with you. you were diagnosed four years ago? >> four and a half years ago. >> tell us about your treatment and how you're doing. >> doing fine right now. i was diagnosed in march 2012. i had chemo to shrink my tumor, then had surgery, reconstruction, inifinished my chemo. after about six, seven surgeries, i was starting to recuperate and now, i'm 100%. this is buddy. >> tell me why you and buddy became involved in paws for a cause. >> it's interested me because you could bring your dog and buddy's a rescue dog. there was a lot of rescue organizations there, also. so, i did it and it's my first year, 2012, i was still going

through treatment and had a lot of fun. lot of friends and family came with me and we continued to do it every year. >> docktell us why it's so impot to keep supporting survivors and patients. >> breast cancer is affecting more and more women. these days and you know, the women that are getting diced are younger. they're not just mothers and grandmothers anymore these are sisters, daughters that are getting diagnosed and you know, the money we help raise through the paws for the cause goes towards cancer research. research is a very important part of trying to find some of the answers to treat cancer. and to ultimately improve the outcomes for patients that are diagnosed with it. >> it seems like having dogs around helps in all kind of ways, right? i think emotional health of people seem to be affect ed by having pets and dogs to help them through their ordeal. is that your experience?

delaware. we've still got a good amount of cloud coverage, but there's some blue. it's been about a week since we've seen blue skies out there. we are start iing to see that drier pattern push in. we've got more of a northeasterly flow and as a result, we are looking at some clearinging. drier air moving in. that allows for the sunshine to break through and will allow to not give foggy conditions into your afternoon. that has since cleared from this morning. so, that's the live outside wilmington. here is your radar and satellite maps. the thicker clouds, those are now moved offshore. they're going to continue to move off to the east. isolated showers are possible this morning. the system that affected us last week went from being to the west of us. so finally, it shifted once it broke the pattern. we were allowed to see more clearing condition, we started with yesterday, but today, more sunshine starting to through in patches ch neighborhoods now, here are your temperatures.
