two of the largest insurance companies say they'll no longer pay for hundreds of common prescriptions. what to do if your drug is on the list. >> announcer: nbc10 news starts now. state of emergency. new video of matthew's devastation in the caribbean as it heads closer to the united states. good evening, everyone. i'm jim rosenfield. this is the most powerful hurricane the u.s. has seen in more than a decade. the massive storm is on the verge of strengthening tonight as it bears down on the bahamas on its way to a possible landfall in central florida. the storm has already claimed the lives of at least 25 people in the caribbean. tonight, more than 2 million americans are being urged to evacuate, including people in both north and south carolina. tonight we have team coverage as we track hurricane matthew. nbc10's randy gyllenhaal just outside fort lauderdale. we begin with sheena parveen. sheena, you're getting new

information into the weather center. >> yeah, jim. we have just got the update from the market hurricane center. the 11:00 p.m. update we have been anticipating. a category 3 hurricane moving into the bahamas, and this is still a major hurricane. this is going to be a big deal  for parts of florida, mainly the east coast of florida. max winds 115 miles an hour, moving to the northwest at 10 miles an hour. it's still on the northwest track on its way to florida. here is the track as we go over the next 24 to 48 hours. potentially it could strengthen back to a category 4 hurricane. that is incredibly strong as it could graze the east coast of florida, bringing a lot of rain, a lot of wind. that would be very devastating if this storm actually did make a direct hit on land. either way, even if it grazes the coast, that would still be very bad for the state of florida. that would be thursday evening through friday evening. so within 24 hours alone, florida could be dealing with a major hurricane. then it takes a very sharp turn

out to sea, grazing potentially the south carolina coast. we'll have to see how quick that turn goes. now i want to show you the perspective with our area. we're very far out of this cone. it's not going to be affecting our weekend forecast. for florida, though, hurricane warning all up and down the east coast of florida, even the gulf coast of florida is bracing for some impact from this storm. and all the computer models, they're in agreement it's going to be at least near florida, then take a turn out to sea, which we'll be watching very closely. closer look at your weekend forecast, and we even have some rain in our forecast as well. that's coming up. >> sheena, we'll see you soon. our team coverage continues now with nbc10's randy gyllenhaal. he's in deerfield beach florida as the sunshine state prepares for matthew. >> reporter: by this time tomorrow, we'll be experiencing the worst of the storm in south florida. hurricane matthew still a couple hundred miles off of the coast, but it's heading this way, tracking florida's eastern coastline, and now residents here are preparing for the worst, something they haven't had to do in more than a decade.

for the first time since hurricane wilma back in 2005, sill veeio gilbert is putting up his storm shutters, planning to evacuate if things go from bad to worse. >> tomorrow i think i might leave. >> reporter: he lives near the coastline in deerfield beach where winds are predicted to reach 80 miles per hour. >> i'm ready. i have water. i have bread. i have a generator. i'm ready to go. >> reporter: and local supermarkets, some shelves are emptied out. water and bread nowhere to be found. shoppers worried the storm could take a sudden left turn and knock out electricity. >> i think we're going to get 60, 70 miles an hour wind out of it. you never know. we'll see. >> reporter: emergency officials say landfall could happen anywhere on florida's east coast, and if it does, it will be devastating. >> this storm has already killed multiple people, and we should expect the same impact in florida if people do not take this seriously.

if an evacuation order is issued for your area, leave immediately. >> reporter: tonight, local businesses finish protecting their property from flying debris, but heavy rain and storm surges could also cause massive flooding. >> i think worse than the wind is probably the flooding. i mean even during just a normal rainy storm, it floods pretty bad. i think this is something people should take seriously. >> reporter: parts of broward county are under a voluntary evacuation further north from here, mandatory evacuations. concerned this hurricane could make landfall along the space coast. in broward county, randy gyllenhaal, nbc10 news. back here at home, we're following breaking news tonight. a popular duck boat attraction in philadelphia is no more. nbc10 has learned that ride the ducks has shut down in the city indefinitely. for more on this story, let's go to nbc10's keith jones. what have you learned? >> reporter: ride the ducks released a statement saying that operations in philadelphia are not financially feasible at this

time. it cited factors that included a 330% increase in their insurance premieres. you might remember two deadly accidents involving duck boats here if philadelphia in may of last year, a ride of ducks vehicle hit and killed a woman crossing the street during rush hour. then back in 2010, two hungarian tourists were killed when a duck boat was hit by a barge. it led to a $17 million lawsuit and criminal charges. ride the ducks says it is working with its 42 employees to help them get severance and help them find new jobs. live in the breaking news center, keith jones, nbc10 news. one person is dead after a tractor-trailer crushes another car on route 295 in salem county. skyforce10 over that scene around 7:00 tonight near the new jersey turnpike. you can see the trailer of the big rig resting on what looks to be a pickup truck right there. police say the driver was trapped, died at the scene. no word on what caused the crash. a 47-year-old woman was shot and killed tonight in

kensington. police found that woman when they responded to the area near a and sterner streets after hearing gunshots. investigators say they don't believe the woman was the intended target. the suspect managed to get away. tonight we're learning new details about a home invasion that targeted five students at saint joe's. masked men tried to kidnap one of the young victims, but she ran for help. as nbc10's brandon hudson reports, the crime is putting the camp pus on high alert. >> reporter: a crime scene unit and detectives are outside a house where two armed masked men broke in, tied up a saint joe's student, stole some of her belongings and tried to throw her in a trunk, but she was quick enough to get away. we returned to 57th and woodbine as investigators worked to find out who robbed and tried to kidnap a 21-year-old woman where she lived. just 18 hours earlier, the young saint joe's student woke up to a nightmare in her bedroom at 5:00 in the morning. >> she sees two males in the house, heavily masked. one has a gun, one has a knife.

>> reporter: they tied her up with duct tape. >> they put her into the closet inside the basement and rummaged through her house, take her ipad, cell phone, car keys and purse. >> reporter: detectives say the woman got away as the robbers tried to throw her in a trunk. officers discovered the getaway car a few blocks from the home. >> it's definitely concerning. i think it's a big concern for the whole community, for the whole university. >> reporter: neighbors who live across the street told us they first saw the cops this morning as concern grew. >> this is the public safety advisory. >> reporter: students on campus woke up to the terrifying news. they showed us a notification sent from the university. >> well, our friend had heard about it beforehand, and she kind of like texted all of us. then when we got the e-mail, it made it real. >> the young lady obviously wasn't physically harmed, but the emotional stress that she's going through right now is huge and great. >> reporter: one of the victims' roommates says that the girls who lived here plan to move out. saint joe's has offered them a place to stay on campus. in overbrook, i'm brandon hudson, nbc10 news.

to decision 2016 now. mike pence wasn't the only one trying to take a victory lap today. so was his running mate, donald trump. here's what the republican nominee had to say about the v.p. debate while campaigning in nevada today. >> mike pence did an incredible job, and i'm getting a lot of credit because that's really my first so-called choice. that was my first hire as we would say in las vegas. >> hillary clinton also gave her running mate the thumbs up for his performance last night literally. in fact, she signaled her approval while boarding her plane by giving tim kaine a double thumbs up. she later appeared at a fund-raiser where she praised kaine for trying to push pence to defend trump's actions. today, both candidates came to pennsylvania pushing for votes. nbc10's lauren mayk caught up with tim kaine during his trip to philly and asked him about the tone of the debate. >> reporter: in philadelphia, senator tim kaine with some

self-reflection. >> the debate was a little feisty. i mean i got to admit. i am irish. >> reporter: hillary clinton's running mate at his first rally after the vice presidential debate with republican mike pence. it was a face-off with dozens of interruptions by the democrat. >> i'll take them one at a time. >> more nations should get nuclear weapons. >> reporter: in a one-on-one interview, i asked senator kaine about his approach in a race that has already been ugly. michelle obama was here recently and she was talking about when they go low, we go high. so how did you feel about how the tone came off last night? >> you know, i went in with some things i really needed to do and i did them, and it was a discussion. we were sitting around a table, and we were having a discussion. >> pretty heated one sometimes. >> there were some heated moments because there's some sharp differences. >> reporter: some republicans i heard called you unhinged. how do you feel about that? >> i'm sure republicans did not like that debate.

>> reporter: but that doesn't appear to be true. with pence getting credit from supporters for appearing calm and controlled. the republican nominee in grantville tonight. >> when my counterpart was serving up -- he was serving up an avalanche of insults. did you catch all that? kind of hard for me to keep up with. >> reporter: both men launching today their own swing through the battleground state of pennsylvania a day after taking swings at each other. >> it's really important not to fuzz up or cloud over the differences. you got to make them plain. >> reporter: in south philadelphia, i'm lauren mayk, nbc10 news. risky business. the dangerous predicament that left a horse dangling from that crane. getting burned. a samsung phone bursts into flames. why this fiere is more concernig than the rest. prescription for concern. why two insurance giants no longer covering some common medications. sheena.

stuck in the mud no more. skyforce10 was above as crews hoisted this horse to safety in chester county today. the 18-year-old clieds dale named cyrus first went missing this morning. he was later found stuck in the mud in thorn bury township. cyrus was trapped for four hours before crews used a crane to get him out. we're told the 1,700 pound horse is doing well now and is up and eating. to trenton, now, and the dramatic scene after an explosion made two homes unliveable, led to a rescue on wayne avenue. investigators spent much of the night making sure no one else was trapped. nbc10's drew smith is there with the story of how survivors escaped. >> reporter: this collapse only took seconds to happen, but the investigation is taking a lot longer.

you can take a look at the full scope of the damage where the second floor of this duplex came crashing down into the first. >> i looked up at the house, and i was really shocked. i had to blink a couple times because it seemed so surreal. >> reporter: tray shawn was in her kitchen when she heard the bang, then ran towarding the collapsing homes. >> i screamed to the house was anybody in there, and there was a cry for help. >> reporter: she and her neighbors smashed a window and helped two people out. they had minor injuries. >> thank god for that, yeah. >> reporter: police and firefighters spent much 69 night still searching because one of these was a vacant home known to attract squatters. we saw responders kick in the back door and a search dog was out on the scene. >> it was really scary. >> reporter: the evidence points to a gas explosion. utility workers shut off the line and dug up part of the street. meanwhile many neighbors had to find another place to stay. the city plans to demolish what's left of the homes. >> the house just has history. i was raised there. >> reporter: i've been in touch with the utility company

tonight. they did disconnect the power for much of this area just as a safety precaution. they are also investigating the cause. in trenton, drew smith, nbc10 news. a new scare involving samsung's galaxy note 7. there is the remains of the charred phone. the owner saying he turned a pop seconds after he turned it off and put it in his pocket. that's when he says it went up in flames. the twist here is the owner says the phone was a replacement phone he had just gotten from samsung. the flight was safely evacuated. the price of prescription drugs could be going up. that's because expression scripts and cvs are dropping more than 200 drugs for common conditions that includes cancer, diabetes, and asthma. they are two of the largest prescription plan managers. the goal is to steer patients to lower cost and safe alternatives so insurers can spend less on

medications. both say patients can appeal. ready, set, grow. that was the name of a workshop and panel discussion in philadelphia tonight. all part of philadelphia minority enterprise development week. entrepreneurs gathered in center city to learn about business development in inner city neighborhoods from local leaders. want to go back to sheena parveen, who is tracking the latest on hurricane matthew and our weather too. >> jim, i want to show you this forecast model that shows the wind raid eye around hurricane matthew. we already know the winds around the bahamas and near the center are over 100 miles an hour. if you look here, as we go through time, this is on top of the forecast track. as we go into tomorrow night, this red area right here, these are winds over 74 miles an hour. so 74 miles an hour or greater. that is right over cape canaveral, possibly closer to the orlando area as well. then we have winds extending out from the center possibly close to tampa near 40 miles an hour.

that could potentially be a category 4 storm still, so that red area would be well over 74 miles an hour. but then it gets closer to the carolinas as we go through friday night, and we could be seeing winds over 60 miles an hour still, and it still could be a major hurricane. so we are still looking at matthew. i'll show you the updated track from the national nuclear center. it just came out at 11:00. it's going to stay south of us but a big problem for florida. max winds 115 miles an hour. there you see it's a little clearer of a picture as far as that track is concerned. possibly category 4 by friday morning. we'll be watching that very closely. we really don't expect it to weaken, though, so that's why the national hurricane center even thinks it's also going to be strengthening. if it moves on land, it would be a big problem for florida as well with the most intense winds there. even if it's out to sea a little bit, it will still be keeping its strength. then it will be moving up towards the carolinas the early part of the weekend and taking a

very big turn out to sea. there you see we are well outside of this cone. it is still going to be a big issue for florida and of course the carolina coast is watching it as well. as we go into the weekend, we do have some showers in our weekend forecast not related to matthew. our showers on saturday have to do more with a cold front. here's future weather. tomorrow we're nice and dry, temperatures in the mid-70s. friday we're nice and dry. then saturday, more clouds. we'll have some scattered showers around to start off your weekend. then we go farther to the south, and that is where matthew and all the rain should be, right along the north and south carolina coasts, which we will certainly be keeping you updated on. we go into sunday. temperatures will get cooler, but we're going to get warmer before that. near 80 by friday. saturday around 70. and sunday to end out your weekend, temperatures will be in the mid-60s. so we're going to have a cool down in the forecast. tomorrow morning it's going to be cool to start you off. bus stop forecast, some temperatures could be in the about the mid-40s, around 50 degrees for the philadelphia area. afternoon highs tomorrow, we're

programs designed to get students interested in stem careers. love this story. philadelphia teacher receives an award that puts her in some pretty elite company. today jada puglisi learned she's the recipient of a prestigious educator award. look at her reaction right there. she's just crying away. the fifth grade math and science teacher at andrew jackson school was presented with a $25,000 check. puglisi used her time in the spotlight as a teachable moment for her students. >> it was actually the first in my family to graduate from high school, and i was the first in my family to graduate from college. so you can change your life, and you can change everything that your family may or may not provide for you. >> this was the first of 35 awards to be given out this year. how great is that? eagles news next. planned parenthood.
