philadelphia. the donald's defense. what he says about the possibility of suing nbc over this video of him making lewd comments. >> announcer: nbc10 news starts now. >> 307154. we do have a plane off the runway. >> that plane was carrying donald trump's running mate. mike pence, the republican vice presidential nominee. good evening. i'm jim rosenfield. >> and i'm jacqueline london. if you have the nbc10 app, you received a breaking news alert as soon as it happened. no one was injured. here's a live look at that plane right now, still surrounded by emergency vehicles. >> it skidded off the runway at laguardia airport in queens. that's about two hours north of philadelphia. nbc10's aundrea klein thomas live for us in our breaking news center. >> reporter: nearly 50 people were on board with governor pence. that includes his wife and daughter, campaign advisors and journalists. here's video at the moment of impact.

>> oh, my god. >> reporter: nbc political reporter vaughn hilliard captured this video inside of governor mike pence's campaign plane as it slid off the runway at laguardia airport. >> remain seated. >> reporter: emergency crews responded and evacuated 37 passengers and 11 crew members on board. no one was injured. pence was coming to new york for a fund-raiser that was ultimately canceled. >> it was dark out there. there didn't appear to be any significant damage to the aircraft. >> reporter: officials with the port authority would not speculate on the cause of the accident. the ntsb is en route to conduct the investigation. aviation expert jim bringle says the heavy rain should not have been a factor. >> if there's no mechanical problems and the weather wasn't bad, there's no excuse that he has for not making that landing. >> reporter: donald trump is on the campaign trail in ohio. he called his running mate after hearing about what happened and mentioned the conversation to the crowd at the end of his rally. >> i just spoke to mike pence,

[ applause ] he got out. everybody is fine. everybody's fine. >> reporter: in a tweet, governor pence thanked first responders and those who reached out with concern. reporting from the breaking news center, aundrea cline-thomas, nbc10 news. that rain that was heading through laguardia came from the same system that brought us wet weather today. >> this is a look at nbc10 first alert radar right now. there's still some rain sticking around. sheena has our nashd forecast. >> we still have some rain around right now. it's mostly stretching from trenton down to wilmington, right across the i-95 corridor. the rest of the area has really dried out. you see all the rain offshore, and that's really the last little area of rain. it's going to continue to move through new jersey and delaware, but right now some of the heaviest leading parts of bucks county. bensalem still seeing it. moving into florence right

through the philadelphia area but now moving into new jersey. it stretches down towards wilmington and even a little bit farther south but right around the major interstates. that again is the last piece of rain much it's all part of that big weather system. but on the back side of it, we're going to see more drying just in time for your friday. temperatures right now are mostly still in the upper 50s. tomorrow morning, though, a dry morning commute. a chilly friday but a nice weekend warm-up on the way. i'll show you those details coming up. tonight we have new details in the search for a group of smash and grab thieves who have now struck twice in just a week. police believe the theieves are the same one behind a break in at boyd's. >> nbc10's brandon hudson is live in northeast philadelphia. we saw all that smashed glass, brandon. i know they got away with a lot of expensive items at that macy's. >> reporter: yes, they did. police say the thieves walked out of this store with 14

watches worth $16,000, but they dropped a bag on the way out, which is being checked for fingerprints and dna evidence. police say that the suspects got away, but they may be hot on their trail. what looks like a small mess inside this northeast philadelphia macy's turned out to be a big payday for thieves who stole $16,000 worth of watches this afternoon. when nbc10 returned to the store tonight, we got an update on the smash and grab robbery. >> the vehicle we know has been used in other robberies outside of the city. >> reporter: police say a silver mercedes-benz that the suspects got away in is tied to a similar crime outside philly and another smash and grab at boyd's in center city. here is surveillance video from that crime earlier this week. you can see the benz at the bottom of your screen as a rav4 backs into the store. sources tell nbc10 philadelphia police discovered the same rav4

burned to a crisp today. as for the benz, police say it still hasn't been found. but another lead may come from a bag left behind by the three men. >> although they were wearing gloves during the commission of today's robbery, there still may be some fingerprints that we could get from the bag. >> getting to the holidays. people are getting crazy. i didn't see no evidence or nothing happening in there so they must have cleaned it up pretty quick. >> reporter: we spoke to this shopper as things died down at the macy's. it was a much different scene around 2:30 this afternoon when the suspects used a hammer to smash the jewelry case. >> there was like one bang and then you heard the constant, you know, smashing windows. that's when everybody realized something was going on and everybody started running the opposite way. >> reporter: police are looking for a silver mercedes-benz with the pennsylvania license plate hva3741. it was last seen going south on roosevelt boulevard. this crime was caught on surveillance video. investigators are looking at that tonight.

they say the suspects, all men, wore dark gray or black clothing. live in northeast, philadelphia, i'm brandon hudson, nbc10 news. new at 11:00, a jury has ruled in favor of a former penn state assistant football coach in his defamation suit against the university. mike mcqueary has been awarded $7.3 million. his testimony helped prosecutors charge jerry sandusky with child molestation. mcqueary's attorney told the jury that penn state made mcqueary a villain and a sca scapegoat in the sandusky scandal and that contributed to him not being able to find a job. penn state says he was let go because the new coach didn't want him on the staff. to decision 2016 now. donald trump setting his sights on nbc tonight as he talks about the impact of that infamous access hollywood tape on his campaign. tonight on fox news, trump suggests to bill o'reilly that he may sue the network over the release of the tape earlier this

headquarters in berks county tonight. priebus sat down with nbc10's lauren mayk and talked about how trump's campaign is impacting the re-election bid of republican senator pat toomey. >> we've got a change electorate. we've got a change candidate. i think donald trump is a change candidate and i think pat toomey deserves another six years. >> priebus says he's not disainterest poed that toomey has not endorsed trum. toomey is facing the challenge of democrat katie mcginty. the latest leak of stolen e-mails is causing trouble for hillary clinton's campaign tonight. a memo released by wikileaks detailed how her husband personally earned millions of dollars from donors and contacts made through the clinton artable foundation. the memo was written by a long time bill clinton aide during hillary clinton's state department tenure. the former aide also described free travel and vacations arranged for the clintons by corporations. no mention of that today as hillary clinton campaigned

alongside first lady michelle obama in the battleground state of north carolina. in their first campaign appearance together, the two teamed up on trump. >> if hillary doesn't win this election, that will be on us. it will be because we did not stand with her, and that is exactly what her opponent is hoping will happen. that's the strategy. to make this election so dirty and ugly that we don't want any part of it. >> the first lady stressed that everyone should vote as elections can be decided by a razor's edge. we've been talking about concerns about phony poll watchers and voter intimidation. now the debate has turned into a lawsuit. coming up, we'll tell you how to protect your vote, your rights, and what you need to know before election day. a delaware county delegate accused of assault during the democratic national convention is now acquitted in the incident. walter weeks was charged with

misdemeanor indecent assault after a fellow delegate accused him of licking her breast at a center city hotel bar. a philadelphia judge acquitted weeks today citing insufficient evidence. with a septa strike looming. philadelphia's city council is urging the union and management to try to make a deal. today, the council approved a non-binding resolution. it calls on the transport workers union and septa management to come up with a new contract before it expires next week. if there's no deal, workers would walk off the job at midnight monday into tuesday. the strike would affect philadelphia bus, trolley, and subway lines but not regional rail lines outcity. a walkout would involve more than 5,700 transit workers. septa has released a service interruption guide. you can find a link to it on the nbc10 app and on nbc10.com. who's calling you? the answer to that question might not be what you think. a warning about a scheme to take your money.

federal prosecutors arrested dozens of irs impersonators

accused of scamming thousands of people out of more than $300 million. investigators say the perpetrators were working for call centers in india. more than 60 people are facing charges, including two dozen arrested here in the u.s. in connection with the scheme. the scammers apparently posed as government agents and threatened people with arrest, fines, or deportations if they did not pay up. >> scammers in this case and in so many cases like this are convincing. they are menacing, and they are ruthless in their pursuit of victims. >> officials say the scammers mostly preyed on the elderly and immigrants who feared deportation. federal officials say the government will never ask for money over the phone. they say if you get a call like that, hang up. the irs will always mail you a bill if you owe taxes. officials warn that other groups may be involved. back now to decision 2016. we've heard a lot of talk about a supposedly rigged process in this campaign. now there's a legal fight over

position. >> he just wants to make sure that it's a fair election and if it's a fair election, he's fine with it. i agree with that. >> reporter: legal experts who monitor elections for a living, don't expect widespread issues this time around, but they do say whether you're here in new jersey or across the river in pennsylvania and delaware, there will be teams of people ready to respond. >> we see fliers trying to direct people to the wrong place. >> mary katherine roper with the 866-our-vote team says you don't have to talk to anyone except a legitimate official inside the polling place. your vote can only be charged on the basis of identity or residence. >> voter intimidation is not a self-help opportunity. >> reporter: she says if something doesn't look right, call the district attorney, the board of elections, or find a watchdog group for help. in camden, drew smith, nbc10 news. now to an evening to celebrate hope and recovery in the fight against the addiction

crisis. >> tonight ashley addiction treatment, a nonprofit facility serving the region for more than 30 years hosted a fund-raising dinner at the union league in center city. the event raised money for patient scholarships at ashley. congressman tom macarthur was on hand to lend his support, and nbc10's rosemary connors was the emcee this evening. a nasty day of weather turned into a nasty night. >> yeah, the rain and the cold temperatures just didn't let up tonight, did they? plenty of umbrellas, hoods up tonight in philadelphia. these people along south street doing their best to try to stay warm and dry. meteorologist sheena parveen has your nbc10 first alert neighborhood forecast. make it stop, sheena. >> it will stop for your friday, just in time for the weekend. that's the good news. the rain is moving out. it's starting to dry up through most of the area, but we do have one line of pretty heavy rain. it's moving through quickly, though. lower bucks county, parts of lower montgomery county still seeing the rain, mainly in bucks

county, mercer county. this is the only line we have right now, and it's the last area of rain that will be moving through. it's already moved through philadelphia. now gloucester, washington township will see it soon. it does extend into newcastle county just south of wilmington now, approaching middletown and salem will be seeing some of that heavy rain soon. so that skinny little line of rain eventually will be out of here and your morning commute will be dry. temperatures mostly around 60 degrees for the area. 47 in allentown. mount pocono, 39. tomorrow will be a cooler day. it will be windy too. so the good news, rain clearing for the morning commute. you don't have to worry about it for your morning drive. going into the weekend, we have a warm-up in the forecast. we're going to be back in the 70s. a few showers on sunday. but for halloween, looks chilly but dry for the trick or treaters. that's the only thing we're worried about is halloween staying dry. friday morning, we're going to be dry. temperatures could be in the

upper 30s. philadelphia around 40 degrees. so a chilly start to your friday. windy through the afternoon. could be gusty at times. high temperatures in the 50s. so 58 for philadelphia tomorrow. 58, south jersey. 60 along the shore. saturday, the low 70s in philadelphia. in delaware, if you're in the lehigh valley, mid-60s saturday. sunday, a couple showers mostly in the afternoon. still around 70 degrees. lehigh valley could be in the mid-60s, though. 74 possibly in areas of delaware. now we're looking at your trick or treat monday forecast. monday looks good for halloween. by 4:00 p.m. we'll be dry. mostly sunny. temperatures in about the low 60s or just around 60 degrees. sun starts to set around 6:00 p.m. or a little bit after. temperatures there will be dropping into the mid-to-upper 50s, by 8:00 p.m. about the mid-50s, but it's going to be dry and that's what we like for the trick-or-treaters. i think you can enjoy your halloween evening. temperatures as we go through the rest of next week, we have some days where we are back

getting some new insight tonight into the 76ers national anthem controversy. last night the team made a last minute switch to have a team dancer sing the anthem instead of r and b singer sevyn streeter. streeter took to twitter saying she was cut because she was wearing a jersey that said "we matter." tonight we spoke with streeter's makeup artist, who saw it happen. >> i'm not sure if it was an nba official or a sixers official came in, and he just had this look on his face. we knew that something was wrong. and we said, what, what is it? and the gentleman just said, they're not going to let you wear that shirt. and immediately, i mean i just saw the tears in her eyes.
