>> announcer: nbc10 news starts now. you know, we've heard these rumors. we don't know what to believe. i'm sure there will be even more rumors. >> hillary clinton detonight on a political bombshell. the fbi is investigating new e-mails with a link to her. good evening. i'm jim rosenfield. >> and i'm jacqueline london. this is an october surprise that neither side was expecting, and it all stems from anthony weiner's sexting scandal. >> sources tell nbc news the fbi found the e-mails on weiner's laptop while investigating that he said inappropriate messages to an underage girl. weiner's wife is clinton's top aide huma abedin. turns out abedin used that same laptop to e-mail clinton and now the fbi is checking to see if any of those e-mails were classified. >> the stakes are enormous. drew is live in the breaking

news center. >> reporter: hillary clinton held an unscheduled news conference saying whatever these e-mails contain, she's confident it won't change the fbi's decision not to charge her. meanwhile the trump campaign is re-energized and going on the attack. 11 days before election day, hillary clinton is asking the fbi director to release all the information about e-mails brought to light today, which has investigators back on the private e-mail server case. >> even director comey noted that this new information may not be significant. so let's get it out. >> reporter: fbi director james comey sent a letter to congress saying agents found new e-mails and would now determine whether they contain classified information. back in july, the director said the investigation was over and recommended no charges. but federal officials tell nbc news the new e-mails turned up in an unrelated sexting investigation targeting former congressman anthony weiner. they say his estranged wife, huma abedin, a top clinton aide,

used weiner's laptop to e-mail clinton, something the candidate did not confirm tonight. >> we've heard these rumors. we don't know what to believe, and i'm sure there will be even more rumors. >> reporter: republican nominee donald trump welcomed this negative news about his opponent. >> justice will prevail. >> reporter: finally backing off talk about a rigged election. >> might not be as rigged as a thought, right? right? >> reporter: local political experts are skeptical this would prompt people to change their vote, but it could affect turnout. >> there might be people that were soft supporters who say forget it, i'm not going to vote at all. >> reporter: there is already a lot of debate about why the fbi would put this out so close to the election. here's the bureau's take. since the director told congress he was finished investigating in july, he felt he needed to explain why that testimony is no longer accurate. live in the breaking news center, i'm drew smith, nbc10 news. republican vice presidential

nominee mike pence seized on the fbi's announcement while campaigning in our area today at a rally in bensalem this afternoon. the indiana governor commended the fbi and added this. >> we call on the fbi to immediately release all the e-mails pertinent to their reopened investigation. the american people have a right to know. >> someone staying silent on the fbi investigation, former president bill clinton, who campaigned for his wife in reading today and rallied the hometown crowd. >> thank you. this is one of four shirts that i own made in reading, pennsylvania. vince lattanzio and david chang spoke to students at widener university about climate change. >> it starts with you. tonight philadelphia police are trying to figure out if a child was dragged into an alleyway and chained to a fence. a 9-year-old boy reported that a man dragged him by his book bag, chained him up, and assaulted him this afternoon. but now police say that boy's story is changing, and investigators aren't sure if it actually happened. police are still doing interviews and looking for surveillance video. skyforce10 flying over an accident that shut down. emergency crews rescues one person trapped in that crash near exit 13 in villanueva. the accident happened around 9:30 tonight. it did have the northbound lanes shut down but we're told everything is back open now. and the pennsylvania turnpike is back open in bucks county tonight. a dump truck took down power lines during this morning's commute, shutting down that road between bensalem and the

delaware river bridge. the truck's bed got caught in live wires around 7:30 this morning, created traffic backups all day long, even into the evening rush. crews had to install an electrical pole to remove the live lines from the roadway. elsewhere, panicked passengers rush off an american airlines jet after it caught fire at chicago's o'hare airport today. >> let's go! >> this cell phone video captured the chaos as passengers tried to get off that plane, which was headed to chicago. they tumbled down the emergency chute, eventually standing in the grass off the runway, watching the plane they just escaped go up in flames. >> the worst thing happened that you can imagine when you're flying. 20 seconds later, we'd have all been dead. >> seven passengers and a flight attendant were hurt but they're k expected to be okay. tonight investigators are trying to figure out why two

freight trains were on the same track in chester county before they collided head on. two csx trains crashed into each other around 8:30 this morning on the track near concord road in chester township. four crew members were on the trains. two were taken to the hospital and released. people who live nearby tell us they could hear and feel that crash. >> it was a long, loud, metal crash. you can tell a metal crash, and actually it sounded like a bomb. >> the cause of the crash remains under investigation. new surveillance images show the smash and grab thieves who philly police say struck twice this week. you can see the suspects inside the macy's store at roosevelt mall thursday afternoon. they used hammers to smash a jewelry counter and still $16,000 in watches. the men left in a silver mercedes. that car matches the one involved in the boyd's burglary early tuesday morning. in that case, crooks smashed the display glass with an suv.

tonight temple university is nearly doubling its police presence one week after this attack. >> more than 100 young people formed what police are calling a flash mob, injuring students and even police officers. nbc10's aundrea cline-thomas live in north philadelphia with the latest. >> reporter: earlier this evening especially it was really hard to miss all of the extra officers. there are two across the street in front of the foot locker. we've seen officers in cars and on their bikes on patrol, and students say they're definitely taking notice. this surveillance video captured last friday shows more than a dozen youth jumping an unsuspecting temple student in what's described as a flash mob-style attack. one week later, officers manned those same corners in the area around the university's main campus. >> obviously i feel a lot safer because, you know, if anything happens, there's more people around. and there's more people you can go to in case something happens.

>> reporter: nearly doubling the police presence is part of temple's response to the attacks that injured eight, including students and police officers. social media sparked the chaos that involved more than 100 youth. fourteens ranging from 15 to 17 years old were arrested. >> certainly we're concerned, and, again, it's reassuring that the police are here and there's an added presence. so we're comfortable. >> reporter: a much needed sentiment as the university celebrates parents' weekend. >> i feel much more safer. but i'm like used to this urban environment so -- like i'm not necessarily scared of the youth presence. >> reporter: for many students, they continue to go about their normal routines. >> walking around campus, even a few blocks off campus, there's always been police officers on bikes. i always see the cop cars around. i feel very safe. >> reporter: temple's new security plan also includes working with these businesses and monitoring social media. they hope to find out about

protests erupted during a superstorm sandy anniversary event in sea side heights this afternoon. governor chris christie was set to deliver a speech one day ahead of the fourth anniversary of the storm when he was interrupted. the protesters are angry they haven't been able to return home four years later. >> but we need to keep things in perspective. it's 11 years since katrina, and there are still huge neighborhoods in louisiana that are not rebuilt.

>> governor christie and his aides took down some of the residents' contact information and promised to call them. the 76ers are apologizing for not letting a singer perform the national anthem this week. sevyn streeter says the team pulled her minutes before their game wednesday because she was wearing a shirt that said "we matter." today the team released a statement saying they made the wrong decision. the sixers also invited her to perform at a future game of her choice. septa workers are already planning for a pending strike next week. we saw dozens of them with picket signs waiting to see what happens tuesday. now, if the strike happens, it's possible it may last through the historic presidential election. >> yeah, the work stoppage would force riders to plan out how they can get to the polls and to work on time of course. nbc10's brandon hudson live after talking to voters about their plans.

>> reporter: we went to this busy bus stop across the street to talk to passengers in case there is a septa strike next week. many of them told us they plan to use car pool in the event of a septa strike. and if it impacts the presidential election. ready and waiting. the transport workers union local 234 allowed our nbc10 camera to see members get picket signs for tuesday's potential strike. >> no contract, no work! >> reporter: some made it a family affair. no one at the union hall would talk on camera, but their message was clear. if they don't get a new labor contract, you'll need to find a new way to get to work if you use septa in the city. >> this is my second bus right here. i've got the 125. i'm on the 65. >> reporter: we caught up with this septa passenger moments before his bus arrived. he says he'll car pool in case a strike happens and continues

through one of the most important general elections in history. >> we did it at work today. everybody was getting together. if you work in the morning, the guy said he'll come and back you up. just put a couple dollars in his gas tank. >> reporter: other passengers told us a possible septa stoppage won't keep them from the polls november 8th, even if they rely completely on septa. >> i'm getting to work and i'm going to vote. >> reporter: by any means necessary? >> the early part i'm fine, but the evening part, i depend on septa. >> reporter: some passengers told us they plan to use uber or lyft in the event of workers walking off the job next week. because pennsylvania is not an early election state, that makes getting to the polls on election day that much more important. i'm brandon hudson, nbc10 news. speaking of plans, we are ready for the weekend and a nice start to it apparently. >> i think it's going to be beautiful even though we're almost to november.

>> yes. and halloween is coming up monday. tomorrow morning, it's going to be a cold one. you're going to need a jacket. mostly the upper 30s. some areas around 40 degrees. and we could have some mid-30s as well by 8:00 a.m. trenton has a frost advisory. if you're in mercer county, you could be waking up to some patchy start. cold start to your saturday morning. by the afternoon, though, the 70s return for the entire weekend. so we have a nice warm-up in the forecast. you can also see that right at the bottom of the screen with your neighborhood seven-day rolling across. showers for part of the weekend as well. mostly later in the day on sunday. mostly sunday evening. i'll show you the timing in a second. the good news is we do dry out for halloween. it is going to be a cold evening for the trick-or-treaters, but it's going to be dry, so i think we're happy about that. locally we're dry. we have rain and snow up to our north and west. that's going to stay there. we're not going to see our next rain chance until later in the day on sunday. so here's future weather. saturday looking really good. warmer temperatures right around the low 70s. sunny skies. then we go into your sunday.

a few more clouds start to move in. warmer temperatures, warmer than saturday. now we're talking the mid-70s. but notice the clouds. now see the rain moving in. 8:00 p.m. saturday, scattered showers moving through and pretty much everyone at this point seems to have a fair chance for rain. that cold front is going to swing through. it will clear that rain out just in time for your monday. so a chilly halloween forecast. i'll show you the detailed trick-or-treat forecast in just a second. here's your weekend forecast. 72 saturday for philadelphia. if you're in south -- lehigh valley in the mid-60s. for the trick-or-treaters, for monday, 4:00 p.m., south jersey, 60 degrees. delaware, 60. nice and sunny. nice and dry. it's going to stay that way by 6:00 p.m. or if you are treating by 8:00 p.m. but as it gets later, temperatures will start dropping off to the mid-50s throughout the evening. now we're looking at our ten-day on 10. you see the cool down monday coming, but we have some more
