the pension and work hours. nbc 10's team coverage begins with andrea kline-thomas. how have things changed stings we saw you on hour ago, very crowded. >> very crowded. i actually had to move because there's a l ee's a lot of active 30th street station. the closer we get to rush hour, the later these trains are. these riders had to endure a lot on the way to work now they're having to endure it on the way home. very frustrating for some. i talked to one rider, this is what she told us about her commute. >> it takes me about 15 to 20 minutes to get to work. today it took me 2 1/2 hours to get to work.

>> reporter: i want you to see folks over here, you might hear people yelling, they're the septa ambassadors, they're trying to get people in and out of the station, telling them what line to get into, when trains arrive so they can get this thing moving. but again, folks are going to wait just a little bit, very chaotic here, but folks are getting home. that's the latest here at the 30th street station, i'm andrea klein-thomas, nbc 10 news. more than 50,000 students use septa to get to school. it's a real struggle now, some kids forced to walk miles to get to school or not at all. >> reporter: attendance dropped at least at one school. just one block from here, there's a first through 12th

great high school attendance in the high school is down 60%. we can certainly see the effects of this strike, there's traffic out here, so much so that we need police officers to direct the drivers. also on broad street, many more travelers are traveling on foot. but the head of the school says the impact is much deeper. >> the 12th graders are going to be the most impacted because they graduate this year. and the state requires that they have in a minimum of 990 hours to get a diploma. >> reporter: the halls of the mathematics, civics and science departments are buzzing, but mostly with younger student. the older students who rely on septa to get to class are not able to get there. >> we only have one car and my husband and i both work. i ended up not being able to come to work, my husband took

the car today and i took the car today and he stayed home today. >> reporter: nevertheless, school is still in session, and for the students who can't make it here, they may find their return to class overwhelming. >> we're working on their getting the assignments off of the computers, but many of our students, 96% of our students come from low income families so they don't have computers. >> reporter: difficult situation all the way around, some of the high schoolers we spoke to today told me that their teachers are trying to review as much older material as possible so they don't cover too much new ground in the meantime, they're all hoping for a resolution sooner rather than later. i'm rosemary connors, nbc 10 news. >> there's a lot of traffic behind rosemary so let's get a bird's-eye view of the traffic in center city. >> mitch blacher has a bird's-eye view for us tonight. >> reporter: this area is

normally served by the market frankfurt line, you can see a lot more traffic moving out of the city than we would normally see. uber has told us that they're actually up about 40% and they have expanded their uber pool coverage. the broad street line also shut down, folks will have to commute down to get there as well. >> and we know it's tough to get a ride, so that's why you can get a lift from nbc 10. >> nbc 10's tim furlong rode along as someone got a ride and you helped pay for a philadelphia woman to get home tonight? >> reporter: we did it last night and we thought why not do it again? this woman, nadira, she actually works, just a couple of that, it

it doesn't cool off a whole lot during the evening and then tomorrow morning, it's not that cool at all for this time of the year. and here come the showers and possible thunderstorms. there's 10:00 a.m., it's still far to the west. moves into our northern and western areas, around noontime, it's already cooling off in allentown and warming up in the philadelphia area. and then everything moves through very quickly tomorrow afternoon as computer model is really moving that rain through fast and then the temperature goes down fast, by 5:30, it's 59 degrees in allentown, after getting up near 70. so watch out for that cooldown late in the day tomorrow. as far as a cooldown for the weekend, you're going to be seeing temperatures closer to average, closer to 60 degrees, but it looks dry, friday, saturday, and sunday. temperatures not too bad for this time of the year. and the dry pattern continues once we get past tomorrow. it's chilly on friday,
