hospitals for their injuries. the bus driver, 24-year-old johntoni walker, has been arrested, charged with five counts of vehicular homicide, reckless endangerment and reckless driving. 35 students from kindergarten through fifth grade were on board when it crashed. emergency crews responded around 3:30 to found the bus on its side and wrapped around a tree. the police chief calls it a single-driver incident. speed is being investigated as a possible cause. >> this is a nightmare for this community, for this police department, for our partners and fire and ems. i assure you the public safety professionals in chattanooga are prepared and trained to make sure this is investigated thoroughly, and we're making sure we have all the resources, the family, the schools, and the communities need to respond to this tragedy and trauma. >> the accident comes just days

before shift. the school will be open with counselors available for students and staff. this morning, a suspect is in jail following a two-day manhunt for the ambush-style killing of a san antonio police officer. the suspect, 31-year-old otis mccain, was captured by a s.w.a.t. unit monday. he was driving with a woman and a baby when arrested. mccain was charged with the capital murder of detective benjamin marconi. he was caught on surveillance camera outside of a san antonio police headquarters walking inside at 7:45 for less than a minute. four hours later, lieutenant marconi was shot twice in the head. >> officer down in front of headquarters. i need ems right now. in front of headquarters. >> mccain allegedly pulled up behind the detective while he was making a routine stop, walking up to the detective and shooting him in what has been described as an assassination. >> i think that the uniform was the target. and anyone who -- the first person who happened along was

the person that he targeted. >> detective marconi's family has asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made to a list of charitable organizations including one that supports the children of fallen police officers and firefighters. candikanye west remains in hospital after abruptly canceling a national tour. sources familiar with the case tell nbc news the rap mogul was admitted after l.a. police responded to a medical welfare call monday, and no criminal activity was involved. the decision to hospitalize west was for his own health and safety. this after a week of bizarre oingss including rants against longtime friends beyonce and jay-z and comment on election of president-elect trump. his mother says he's exhausted from his tour. a brooklyn man has been allegedly caught through social media talking about wanting to conduct a nice-style attack in times square on behalf of isis.

the man was charged, a permanent legal resident from yemen, with terrorism. he traveled to yemen and turkey in 2015, allegedly in an attempt to join isis, but he returned several months later after he was unable to join the terrorist organization. his lawyer said he had a legitimate reason for visiting yemen where he had family. in july he told an undercover fbi operative he followed the events in nice, france, and said a garbage truck could be used to crush people in times square. there was no indication that he was actually planning such an attack. 86 people were killed in nice on july 14th during bastille day celebration when was a gunman used a truck to plow through the crowds. this morning we have a better idea of what president-elect trump is planning to do in his first 100 days in office. after an off-the-record meeting with media executives and on-air personalities including lester holt and chuck todd, mr. trump spelled out his priorities in a campaign-style video whiched oddly enough did -- which oddly enough did not include building

with severe injuries. a local doctor said many hurt their face and suffered minor fractures to their arms and legs. the cause still being investigated by authorities. developing now, a powerful earthquake off the coast of japan overnight. a tsunami scare sending residents fleeing for higher ground. an eerie reminder of the 2011 quake in the same location, killing nearly 19,000 people. only 14 people are injured from the 7.4-magnitude quake. no reports of any death or missing people. nbc's janice mckey-fryar is live in fukushima in japan. good to have you with us. why was the outcome less tragic than what we saw a couple of years ago? >> reporter: officials believe it was actually an aftershock of the 2011 quake. they say they happen often, perhaps monthly. though this was obviously the

strongest since the quake that was the most powerful ever recorded. a tsunami warning was issued and thousands told to evacuate. there were waves of 3.5 feet that hit parts of the island. tonight the warnings and advisories have been downgraded. it's business as usual. the concern was what might happen at the fukushima nuclear plant. you'll remember in 2011 the dai-ichi plant suffered a serious, severe meltdown. today another plant was the concern, the number three reactor knocked off line by the earthquake. it came on 90 minutes later. officials say there were only slight increases in temperature and within the safety limits. tonight officials warning people to be safe and ready as there could be more aftershocks to come. >> thank you very much for joining us. there is urgent new concern about the situation in syria

after government forces bombed even more hospitals in aleppo leaving 250,000 with severely limited access to critical care. the u.n. humanitarian chief said that the situation has gone from terrible to terrifying, and now barely survivable. nbc news chief foreign correspondent richard engle with the latest. >> reporter: cameras captured the moments bombs hit what was one of just two hospital left in eastern aleppo. a team from al jazeera television was filming inside. patients didn't know where to run. nurses face heartbreaking choice, taking babies out of incubators to keep them alive or leaving them in a hospital that had become a target. now, there's only one hospital left. tonight, we spoke to a member of the aleppo medical council. if this final hospital is bombed, what will it mean for the people in syria?
