>> live from the cbs broadcast center in new york city this is cbs2 news. >> right now a developing story on long island. a plane down on a residential street narrowly missing homes and people. the aftermath, the investigation, and the problem the pilot encountered moments before impact. >> good evening. i am cindy hsu. the pilot and passenger of the plane are in the hospital today as investigators try to piece together what went wrong. the piper 2odell beckham crashed. cbs2's scott rapoport is at the scene with more on this develop story. >> reporter: a harrowing scene here in this bayport neighborhood. you can see the damage, and authorities say it's a miracle no one here was killed. >> mangled and charred, the single-engine piper 2odell beckham came down from the sky,

neighborhood on 2nd street and 3rd avenue, bursting into flames before startled witnesses. >> i was looking out my window and it stalled. he turned around and came back in and went down. he hit the first pole, twisted around, landed and went on fire. >> reporter: michael wicken heard the moment of impact. he spoke to us via phone. >> we were in our house and heard a big crash. looked out the window and saw a big dark cloud of smoke rise into the air. it was kind of short. didn't link heer. >> reporter: investigators say the plane took off from the bayport arrow dream around 7 p.m., almost immediately experienced engine trouble and tried to turn around and come back. it never made it. the plane last altitude, clipping the tops of trees and electrical wires, smashing into the pavement. the frantic scene recorded on air traffic control audio >> a small plane is on fire. the plane is on fire.

passenger were pulled to safety by bayport volunteer firefighters who lived in the neighborhood and responded to the crash >> they are trying to get the pilot out. it's a full plane on fire. >> reporter: the victims were medevaced to stony brook hospital >> right now, both occupants of the plane are alive. it's nothing short of a miracle. >> reporter: police say the pilot, 35-year-old scott clifford, has two brokeen legs and head injuries. the passenger, mike rome, 65 years old, sustained a head injury. remarkably, no one in the neighborhood was injured and no homes were damaged. the faa says it is investigating and that the national transportation safety board will determine the probable cause of the crash. in bayport, long island, suffolk county, scott rapoport, cbs2 news. >> tough questions. very few anticipates tonight from mayor de blasio. this afternoon he was on the hot seat the first time since

launched by the fbi and the u.s. attorney. marsha kramer has the story. >> reporter: mayor de blasio clapping up a storm at the latino pastoral action center in the bronx as he stands at the center of the storm. an aggressive review of his fundraising activities by the feds. mr.mayor, the u.s. attorney seems to be asking some of the same questions that government groups have been asking about your fundraising activities. how do you feel about the u.s. attorney putting your fundraising under a microscope? >> respectfully, we have gotten no inquiry from any office. no one associated me has gotten any inquiry. i can't comment on something that i have no specifics on. >> reporter: people >> reporter: people are being called in question. >> that's what you say. i respect your reporting. we have gotten no indication of that. until we have something specific to respond to, there is nothing to respond to. >> reporter: the probe reportedly part of a wide- rangei ng corruption

businessmen with ties to the mayor. jeremy riesch berg on the left. both served on the inaugural committee and donated or raised money for him. as we reported last friday, sources say the feds are questioning members of the real estate industry about donations solicited by team de blasio, including former campaign treasurer ross offinger. >> i think he has handled everything with integrity and appropriately. >> reporter: taps on the telephones of the two businessmen have ensnared members of the nypd. about 20 cops have been questioned about allegations they may have improperly received gifts and trips. the commissioner moved four of the most senior men from their command posts last week. the mayor making his first comments about that >> i absolutely believe when commissioner bratton decides that something like that is necessary, that it's well merritted. >> reporter: this investigation

the u.s. attorney and the police department with many more questions. in the bronx, marcia kramer. >> the mayor said his relationship with the two businessmen was not particularly close, even though he attended a fundraiser at riesch berg's home. he has not seen the men in the last year. >> video of a wild robbery at a long island gas station. surveillance cameras caught the crime, the confrontation and shirtless suspect who almost got away. police are crediting the employees for putting their lives on the line and helping them catch catch the culprits. ilana gold spoke with the victims. >> reporter: surveillance cameras at nick's express auto in floral park shows the suspecte d robber at ###-###6 last night while police say his accomplices, a man and woman, distracted the attendant in the parking lot. he goes behind the counter and straight for the register and allegedly grabs $600.

and starts quicking him quick -- kicking him. one of one of them intervened. they get into a struggle that moves into the garage. this suspect loses his shirt while the worker tries holding him down and seconds later pipe? >> he tried to hit me. then he -- i try to hold him he hit me. >> reporter: he says the suspect grabbed a hammer, broke the garage window and you see him crawl out and run off. they chase after him and drag him back to the property and hold him down until police arrive. why did you go after him. >> i can't let him go. >> reporter: nassau county police arrested three men in connection with the crime. police tell us this convenience store in franklin square was targeted by those same three suspects two weeks ago. the owner here says they stole $1,300. >> i am afraid because i am scared.

>> reporter: the victim is thankful these suspects were caught >> they should be behind bars, you know? it's dangerous. >> reporter: because of these employees who put their lives at risk to make sure the accused culprits don't return. ilana gold, cbs2 news. several families are without a home tonight after a massive fire ripped through two buildings in yonkers. both buildings on harriet street gutted by flames which started in the basement of a church. the fire chief says the fire quickly spread to a home next door. families living there had minutes to get out safely. >> out the window. he told me he couldn't breathe no more. when he said that, i knew i had to run out with the kids. i ran out. grabbed the dog and grabbed everybody and ran. >> the red cross is assisting five families, including seven children. no one was hurt. now to campaign 2016 and the countdown until new yorkers head to the polls. that primary now is just nine days away, and many of the candidates did not take the weekend off, working hard to

>> i have said repeatedly that i'd take him over donald trump or ted cruz any day. >> reporter: a recent fox news poll has clinton leading sanders 53% to 37% in new york. the same poll shows donald trump winning in new york with 54% over ohio governor john kasich with 22%. texas senator ted cruz trailing with 15%. despite trump's lead, trump rallied in rochester sunday afternoon, calling the political system corrupt. >> whether it's me or whether it's bernie sanders, when i look at it and i see all these victories that i have, all these victories that he's got, and then you look at the establishment and i want to tell you, it's a corrupt deal going on in this country and it's not good. >> reporter: cruz was in albany last week. kasich will visit tomorrow where he is confident he will gain more delegates >> we will see what happens out in new york, pennsylvania, maryland, connecticut. we will see what happens there. so don't be trying to predict how many i'll have because i am not going to predict it.

new tonight a westchester family hit by a frightening phone scam. as cbs2's brian coneybeare reports, the scam artist may have used social media to gather detailed information and target the victims. >> i picked up the phone and it was just a guy screaming, your wife was just in a hit-and-run accident. >> reporter: that's how the kidnapping scam started for hector martinez of cortlandt and his wife carol ann, who was with her mother on thursday. >> i was at the hospital all day long. >> reporter: but the mystery caller told martinez carol ann had injured his nephew in the hospital parking lot. then? >> they said we got your wife. we are drug dealers from the bronx and we have no insurance. he we we want you to pay for the medical expenses. >> reporter: he told him to go to the walmart and wire more than $1,000 to to to a relative in puerto rico and the scammer said they already started

>> and there was a woman screaming hysterically, hector, don't hang up the phone. we are going going to hurt your wife. i was like, i'm gonna pay. >> reporter: i showed two receipts for money transfers totaling $1,300. he finally got a hold of his wife and mother-in-law. >> i said you just been kidnapped? she goes, no. that's when i realized it was a scam. >> reporter: the suspect even sent taunting texts later that same day. and what's really terrifying the family now is just how those con artists knew carol ann was at this hospital that day. it may be a case of social media stalking. >> i posted on facebook that she was okay. the surgery went fine. >> reporter: that real time facebook update, along with basic research into your name and other social media activity, can turn up a trove of information on the web, like phone numbers, addresses and more, that scammers can use to target you. >> it's easy to find this information out on the

the chilly side, even in the warmest part of the day, the sunshine definitely made it feel better. adam says it's 41. his comment increasing clouds weekend. we are taking a live look outside. this is times square. kind of hard to make out the clouds with all those lights. we do have a thin layer of it's 46 degrees. winds out of the south- southwest at 13 miles per hour. so here are the highs around the area today. upper 40s to the low 50s. 51 the hotspot newark. bridgeport, central park, laguardia all reporting highs today of 50 degrees. now, at 50 it's a full 9 degrees below where we should be. almost 10 degrees off the mark. we started at 31 degrees. that was one of the warmer locations. some locations in the 20s this morning. so definitely interesting. a little on the chilly side. right now we are watching some of those clouds move in and as one of our weather watchers, adam, pointed out, yeah, it is

not as cold tonight as last night. that's the good news. we have this system heading in our direction. we are going to see the circulation around this area of high pressure giving a chance for rain on monday. the clouds move in. it is going to be a mostly cloudy day. we will have a chance for showers on your monday morning. again at lunchtime. even as we head into the evening could see some showers. really it is on tuesday that we are expecting the more significant rain. starting right at 6:30 in the morning, we watch a line move through. this is going to bring pockets of heavy rain. that's on monday. we will -- excuse me. on your tuesday during that morning commute. it looks like the rain will be out of here by your tuesday evening commute. so that's something to look forward to. tonight the clouds on the increase. a late chance of showers. 40degrees tonight. and take a look. here is your seven-day forecast. you notice these temperatures out of the 40s. mid-and-upper 50s. we will be into the 60s by the time we head too the -- to the end of the week. >> thank you. all right.
