11:34 pm

11:39 pm
spring arrived. it's clear and mild, 55 degrees and the winds are calm. really not bad temperatures for 11:38 at night. 48 in river dale. 50 at jfk. 49 in jersey city. 55 in central park. 59 in monticello. hamptons only at 33 degrees. here's what you can expect. clear skies tonight. it's cool, but not as chilly as last night. calm winds overnight, that's good news. temperatures tomorrow, even warmer than what we had today, approaching the 80-degree mark. it will be slightly cooler along the coast. there's no real threat of significant rain until friday. that's when we could see showers, even thunderstorms. but we've got this high pressure ridge. it is just keeping us safe from the moisture. so basically what we have is clear skies, warm conditions that will bring us into this work week. here's the week ahead, starting out with high pressure, staying in control. warm and dry weather, mainly dry weather continues.
11:40 pm
the rainfall update, so far in april we've had just over an inch. normally we would be at about 2.67, so there is a deficit. we need about an inch and a half of rain. we are sort of in the hole. but we will have a chance to sort of add numbers to the bucket there, the rain bucket on friday. overnight tonight, not bad, 40s and 50s, very mild. tomorrow, mostly 70s across the board. we'll be approaching the 80- degree mark. the summer countdown, just in case you're curious, 64 days until the start of summer. seven-day forecast, feeling like summer tomorrow with 78 degrees. it is cooler on tuesday and wednesday. as i mentioned, showers and responsible thunderstorms for your friday. >> elise, thank you. love the countdown. still ahead, steve overmyer sits down with stu jackson. plus, tonight's islanders game. sports is next.

11:41 pm
@cbsnewyork. they're one of the wall street banks that triggered the financial meltdown -- goldman sachs. just settled with authorities r their part in the crisis that put seven million out of work and millions out of their homes. how does wall street get away with it? millions in campaign contributions and speaking fees. our economy works for wall street because it's rigged by wall street. and that's the problem. as long as washington is bought and paid for, we can't build an economy that works for people.
11:42 pm
11:43 pm
. well, heroes have certainly made the post season. right now, nobody is hotter than riley smith. for the past few days, islanders fans have been wondering, who is this kid? he's a 25-year-old who plays for the florida panthers and he leads the nhl in post season goals this year. the panthers in town for game 3. islanders hosting their first playoff game in brooklyn. new york fell behind by two
11:44 pm
smith. shane prince gets him within one in the second. the captain sets up nielsen about 5 minutes later and the islanders tie it at 3-3. couple of goals and four assists for tavaris in the series. it goes to overtime. brock nelson set up thomas hickey. there's your game-winning goal. 4-3 is the final. new york takes a 2-1 series lead. game 4 wednesday night at the barclays center. we are joined now by the former executive vp of the nba and the current associate commissioner of the big east, stu jackson joining us in studio. good to see you. >> good to see you. thanks for having me today. >> a great off season. the national champions big east villanova wildcats. fantastic job by the wildcats. considering how important this is for the conference, three years ago there was a mass exodus at this conference.
11:45 pm
how much did this legitimize the conference? >> it makes the conference separate above the conference because now we have a national championship. the branding that brings, the attention it will bring to our conference next year, in subsequent years, it can't be measured. i don't think there's anyone that would have imagined that only three years into this restructured conference we would have a national level program like villanova that actually wins the national championship. >> but you have been successful. over the past three years, your rpi is a top five, always having teams in the top five, some of the best coaches in america in the big east as well. but does the perception finally match the reality? the reality is this has been a successful conference. >> that has been the reality. we are a basketball-centered conference, a very successful basketball-centered conference. arguably the best basketball conference in the country.
11:46 pm
mainly been due to the fact that in the governance structure amongst the ncaa, you have these football conferences, the five football conferences that have taken on a leadership role in terms of what everybody thinks are the leaders. they forget in basketball the big east is as great as any conference in america when it comes to playing the game of basketball. >> oh, yeah. the conference really cashed in as well. in the tournament, you won 12 tournament games and you cashed in with $19 million. it's like you said. you were facing against the power five conferences. if this were a poker table, if you were against the power five conferences, do you feel like you stole the pot from everybody? >> we certainly surprised them, that's for sure. again, when you have a program like villanova that's built the way they are, the way they structure their program, quite frankly the way all the big east teams structure their
11:47 pm
stability and sustainability, this is bound to happen. i don't think we thought it would happen within three years. the football conference, maybe of them get tagged with having one and done players or they are able to recruit on a level that perhaps some of us that aren't in the autonomy football five are able to recruit. schools like involve are proving them wrong. >> they really ray. do you want a school like villanova to be the bread winner of the conference or do you like it if xavier or butler or creighton has a good year year after year? do you want someone to carry the reigns? >> it's an interesting question. our coaches would tell you anyone in our league is capable of beating any other team. take this year by way of example. i thought going into the tournament that perhaps xavier was the deepest team in the league, perhaps the most talented team and playing some
11:48 pm
same level, if not better than villanova. but as you know in the one-and- done format, you win or go home, it's all a matter of playing the best basketball at the right time and, you know, winning six games and villanova fortunately was able to do that. >> big east tournament will still remain at the garden once again. next year, the acc tournament will be at the barclays center. is this one of those things where this will actually help your tournament because everybody's going to be thinking college basketball at that time, or is it taking away from the people attending the big east? >> i think having them here only enhances the game of basketball, enhances new york city and reaffirms the fact that new york is the mecca of basketball. everyone knows that. that's why they are coming here. but i like the quote that kevin willard had about the fact that the big 10 was -- excuse me, acc is coming to new york. he said, you know, we've been here for a long time. we'll continue to be here. they are going to come in for a
11:49 pm
pizza and then they are going to leave. >> right. [ laughter ] >> new york city is still the big east tournament. we feel strongly about that. i don't know how much crossover in terms of fans there will actually be. the big east tournament is such a great tradition, something that fans plan for and look forward to, and listen, if we have a big east tournament or the kind of matchups we had this season, next season, we don't really concern ourselves with any other conference coming in. >> you mentioned football a couple of times. of course the big east does not have football right now, but it seems like college athletics are being, i guess, led by the college football programs. but you were able to have that success without any football programs there. was the demise of the big east a little bit of a rush to judgment by everybody out there? did it almost kind of leave everyone in the conference with a bit of a chip on your shoulders because of that? >> yeah, i think you're right. i think it was a rush to judgment. certainly the football schools
11:50 pm
because of football and the financial impact that it has there. but sometimes your strength can also be your weakness. the fact that we don't have football is actually a strength for us. you know, just given there aren't as many scholarships that we need to deal with, our revenue base is based upon having successful basketball programs, and we're a league that only focuses in on basketball. and that's success. we're able to do that and i think that's a real positive. listen. things come down to not only financial in college sports, but also from a recruiting standpoint and we're fortunate to be in the northeastern part of the united states. and there are a lot of young men, young women out there, that being on a football campus isn't necessarily the most important thing to them. there's still something to be said for an athlete coming to a basketball-centric school and being, quote, unquote, the big person on campus. that's a strength of ours.
11:51 pm
no, i don't think we do. they left the conference. they are happy. except for syracuse. they wish they are back. but i think being a basketball- centric conference is a big advantage. >> i want to quickly talk about the nba. you clearly still have ties to the nba. you're a big fan, former head coach of the new york knicks. this is a critical off season for not only new york, but phil jackson. he is getting blasted the last couple of years. the record is 49-115 under him, but he also drafted christophe porzingis, plus 15 in wins from the year before. is it fair or unfair the criticism phil jackson is getting right now? >> personally, i think it's grossly unfair. >> really? >> given where the knicks were when he came in and the fact there's been some positive progression from year one to year two, and now there's an opportunity for year three to go out, experience free agency,
11:52 pm
basketball team, i think is a real positive. listen, you're in new york. you've got so many media markets and so many mediums. >> that's the thing, there are so many people who take this personally because the knicks basketball in new york. to see them down like this, upset. >> and i get it. my veins too. well. at the same time, i understand this is a process. sometimes processes are painful. they are going to be a lot better next year. if they are not winning 30, 31 games, maybe they get in the 40s and are playing meaningful games in the month of march and april, which would be a real positive step. >> reports say patrick ewing will be offered the head coaching job of the sacramento kings. is it about time for ewing to get a head coaching position?
11:53 pm
he deserves it. with his resume, his pedigree, his intelligence, his commitment to the game, it was only a matter of time. for me personally, i'm extremely happy he's getting the opportunity. i think he deserves it. i think he'll do terrific. >> associate commissioner of the big east, stu jackson, thanks for your insights. i appreciate them all. >> thanks for having me. it was fun. after years of chasing star power, the brooklyn nets have taken a step towards sustainable success. today they announced the hiring of kenny atkinson as their new head coach. he has been widely considered to be the best assistant ready to make the jump to head coach. he becomes the nets' sith coach in three years. joe girardeau is not afraid to mix things up. alex rodriguez had to assume after an 0-for-19 skid change was on the horizon. today, girardi slid a-rod from the prestigious 3rd spot in the lineup down to 6th.
11:54 pm
quote, whatever it takes to win. alex smokes the first pitch he sees in the 2nd inning. his 16th go ahead homerun dating back to last year and the bombers have a 2-run lead. new york went 1-for-35 this week with runners in position. so what do you expect with the game tied at 3-3? wild pitch. brett gardner in for the go ahead run and it's a 4-3 yankees lead. the yankees bullpen is as good as advertised. that's without chapman. 27 of their 37 outs this year have come by strikeouts. yankees end their 4-game losing streak today. good news regarding jacob degrom's newborn. he is improving after a medical condition this week. the family hopes to bring him home as early as tomorrow.
11:55 pm
from the indians. michael conforto, the second year met has gone 5-for-12, now leads the mets with a .313 batting average. mets had a 6-0 lead by the 2nd inning, which made up for a light day of lifting for steven matz. remember, he was chased out in the 2nd inning in his last start, but he struck out a career high nine in seven scoreless innings. in this one, mets pick up their first series win of the season.
11:56 pm
we'll be right back. even when the deck is stacked, a new yorker will find a way to break up big banks, create millions of jobs, and rebuild america. some say it can't be done again.

rebuild the middle class, make wall street banks pay their fair share, give every child a chance. new york -- it's our time again to build a future to believe in. sanders: i'm bernie sanders and i approve this message. . let's get a final check on your wakeup weather. >> let's do it. a beautiful wakeup. we're waking up to temperatures in the 50s for most of us.
11:58 pm
we get that with tons of sunshine. enjoy it while you can. we have a 10-degree temperature drop from monday to tuesday. early tuesday morning, we could see a few sprinkles, light showers out there before things start to clear up again. tomorrow, definitely the pick of the week. >> sounds good. elise, thank you. that does it for cbs 2news at 11:00. for the entire cbs 2news team,
