it is 4:30, 80 degrees already on this thursday, august 11th. another warm day with afternoon showers expected. we'll have traffic and weather on the 2s coming up. but, first, a man who scaled a midtown skyscraper has a message for donald trump. good morning, i'm chris wragge. >> and i'm mary calvi. welcome to cbs morning. the virginia man is at bellevue hospital for psychological evaluation after creating turmoil at trump tower. >> he scaled the side of the skyscraper, hoping for a meeting with the gop presidential nominee. cbs 2's janelle burrell joins us live from trump tower this morning with more. janelle. >>reporter: well, chris, it certainly was people watching it unfold live here at trump tower. people all around the world watching this ordeal unfold, it

after it started -- all comeing to an end three hours after it start. the daring climber claimed he was on a mission to speak with donald trump, but after the three-hour ordeal, the only meeting he got was one with police. >> i reached out, i took hold of his hand, and i said, sir, you need to come with me. >>reporter: the spectacle beginning around 3:30 wednesday afternoon, gripping tense moments, hundreds watching below from the ground as the 19- trump tower. he began his ascent a few hours from this outdoor terrace using suction cups used to continue inching his way. from this video taken from inside the tower, you can actually hear the sound of the powerful suctions as they attached to the glass. >> i think he's probably a nut job trying to get to the top. >>reporter: police trying to corner him, cutting open windows. others lowered in large buckets to surround him, attempting to reason with him unsuccessfully. so what was his motive?

arson attack on a pro-trump "t" on staten island >> in this case trump really kind of gets you. he really agitates some people to act out impulsively and that retained anger shows up. >>reporter: we're also seeing passions run high for the presidential candidate, such as the pennsylvania woman who painted her farm house to support donald trump. >> here i get lots of honks and waves. >>reporter: rossi says these passionate supporters view trump as the man america great again. >> this is how they show it, this is how they are emotionally charged, and this is how they may demonstrate that. >>reporter: there's an ugly tone to some of what's happening. a trump supporter used a slur against hillary clinton on a sign at his gas station, while an irish bar owner plastered a picture of donald trump in a urinal. was wednesday's tower climb the height of the campaign craziness? we'll know in 90 days. tony iello, cbs 2 news.

terrifying moments as people jumped to safety from a burning big. >> cbs 2's andrea grymes joins us live from the scene in bedford park. an dree, a what's the latest this morning. >>reporter: and, chris and mary, yeah, one person jumped from this home about 10 people total were injured. let's show you some video from earlier this morning of the flames shooting out of this house at 261 east 202nd street this. began around 2:15 this morning. it took about an hour for crews to get this under control. 10 people total were injured, three firefighters with minor injuries, six civilians with minor injuries, including -- and one additional person who jumped from a first floor window about 15 feet to the ground who escaped the flames and the smoke. the fire department says this one was tough for firefighters because of that heavy smoke, and just a lot of stuff inside

take a listen to what some of the people here had to say. >> glass was everywhere and they were pushing out of the way and a piece almost fell on my dad. the fireman pushed him out to smaik sure that he was -- to make sure that he was okay. >>reporter: about 70 firefighters were on scene. they just recently cleared out a few moments ago. no word yet on how this fire started, but at this point the de appear to be suspicious. reporting live in the bedford park section of the bronx, andrea grymes, cbs 2 news >> an dree, a thank you. new video this morning of the suspect wanted for destroying seven tractor- trailers in east new york, brooklyn last month. police say the man in the video left seven vehicles mostly garbage trucks torched. it took the fdny hours to put out all of the fires. five of the seven trucks have markings for tts trucking company in newark, leading some to believe they may have been targeted. a queens father is

daughter's killer. 30-year-old karina vetrano was attacked last week as she jogged alone in a marshy area of spring creek park in howard beach. police say she'd been sexually assaulted and strangled. vertrano's father is a retired firefighter and 9/11 first responder. he says the family is raising money to add to the police reward. as of last night a go fund me page had raised well in excess of their $100,000 goal. >> during the past years people have come u for my service, if there's anything we can do. well, now there's something you can do. please help me now. >> the nypd is offering $20,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction. governor christie is being called a liar. his new documents emerge in the bridge gate scandal. in newly-released text messages, a staffer claims christie, quote, flatout lied during a 2013 news conference. back then the governor said his staff was not involved in the

yesterday the governor denied the latest allegations. >> it's ridiculous. it's nothing new, and so that's it. there's nothing new to talk about. >> a former port authority appointee and christie's former chief of staff are charged with corruption and fraud. they go on trial next month. an update to that deadly jersey city shooting we first told you about yesterday. a gunman opened fire at a party in a church, leaving a teenager dead and two others weuned. the holy ghost tabernacle ministries was rented out for a private party for young people started shooting in the crowded church hall. city officials say it was not ran do. >> an individual entered the party last night. he shot the victim twice in the head, it was targeted. >> two girls ages 12 and 16 were wounded. mayor philip says the 17-year- old victim had a loaded gun on him. his name has not been released. investigators have leads to identify that shooter. time now is 4:39.

we high humidity up into parts of the hudson valley. irappreciate this from kristy. she has 75 right now, some clouds overhead, and this picture that she sent yesterday, this was right there route 9w, and obviously you see slickened roads and what can happen, a little bit of hydroplaning and too much speed, and you can see problems like this, major headache and personal pain. let's talk about some other weather news from yesterday an go back in just draw your attention so we get your focus right here. this is in the afternoon hours this. is a three-hour loop. you see much of the area is just seeing filtered sun. but out on parts of long island, it was this cell, this lone cell that was causing so many problems, and i mean we've zoomed -- we really have zoomed in to focus on this. and, yeah, the radar was picking up rotation, it was at 4:25, wind was at 70 miles an

tornado, about a 40-yard wide path, and the length was about quarter of a mile. ef-0, that's enhanced fujita and the lowest end on that scale, but still scary with rotation in the sky. and that was really about it. there was that other little burst there on the south shore. ironically, the last tornado in suffolk county was exactly four years ago, so it was four years to the day where you saw a tornado. now we focus clear skies and 80 degrees. winds are variable at 5. again, it's going to be a day with wind out of the south. 77 in babylon and the hampton, veech in belmar, 75 in white plains. it's really dark this morning for parts of the area. that's five degrees warmer than it was this time yesterday. dewpoints, 73, and that's higher than it was yes. i tell you, it's really humid north and west. so hour by hour, you're feeling

lunchtime, heat index of 100 potential this afternoon. that heat advisory from yesterday, yeah, we kind of figured it would be extended to saturday. that's for the city. but it's going to be hot around the area. we continue to climb saturday, and a chance for showers and storms, some of those could be heavy tomorrow on and off right through the first part of next week. first part of your drive right now with alex. >>reporter: thank you, john. good morning, everyone. if you are traveling in new jersey, we do have an accident and downed stre it's on route 80 west at exit 62 in saddlebrook. it's been moved to the shoulder of the road, but you will pass some flashing lights and construction crews as you make your way through the area. also route 17 southbound is, that is currently closed between century road and midland avenue. paramus is where you are dealing with that late-running construction. traffic there is being detoured off at midland avenue. at the queens midtown tunnel, manhattan-bound tube is closed for construction. the queens-bound tube is take thag two-way traffic for you. alternate side parking, it is in effect city wide.

>> alex, thank you. fnches you're just waking up, here's a quick look at your morning update. a 19-year-old virginia man at bellevue hospital for a psychological evaluation after climbing trump tower with suction cups yesterday. he made it to the 21st floor of the 68-story building before police pulled him through a window. in ad video he said he wanted to discuss an important matter with trump. police sketch -- release a sketch of a suspect in a bronx endangerment case. he's accused of following a 12- year-oir in mount hope last month. he allegedly threatened to hurt her if she didn't follow him into a stairwell. she ran, banged on an apartment door and yelled for help. the suspect ran off. sentencing today for a bronx landlord convicted of manslaughter in the death of a tenant. prosecutors say asan baumy killed ramona moor 94 in 2012 over unpaid rent. her remains were found in orange county last year. well, they provide protection for us at big concerts and ball games, but

nypd offers have signed on to sign a new contract. cbs 2's christine sloan tells us what that means for fans. >>reporter: a contract for venues large and small to hire extra uniformed nypd police officers was set to expire thursday. >> what will happen if the big venues like the yankees and the mets don't accept the liabilities that have been placed on them on the contract? >> i'm not familiar enough with the contract, so i want to make sure to get you a more cet mayor bill de blasio on the revised nypd contract that will now hold organizations like yankees and the mets legally responsible for the actions of cops from the nypd's paid detail program, an npped np official calling us -- an nypd official calling us back late this afternoon. he says organizations like the yankees have about 60 regular nypd cops assigned to the stadium by the city, and that the venue can hire 10 or as many as 100 extra uniformed

program. new yorkers like that. >> i want more cops, yes, i do. >>reporter: the nypd official says many of the 100 organizations they've got contracts with on the paid detail program have sign the new contract and that now the nypd's extended the thursday deadline to september 30th to give other remaining big venues more time. >> i think the way we've handled things has been fair to the venues we've dealt with. >>reporter: and now the deadline is se sources tell me that some of the big venues don't want the liabilities and may rely on expanding their existing private security forces. in the newsroom, christine sloan, cbs 2 news. cbs 2 demanded answers, now new jersey lawmakers want action on the continued delays at dmv offices. for months residents have faced long lines to get driver's licenses and car registrations. the agency blames a 30-year-old computer system and drivers who wait until the end of the month

commission swamped with 5 million complaints this year from folks like barbara grosswald who is on the national do not call registry. >> and how effective is that? >> not at all. >>reporter: most americans are on the registry, but that hasn't stopped millions of daily violations. senator is chuck schumer says the registry doesn't work because telemarketers can now disguise numbers, often from overseas. >> and they can push a button and do a million calls. it's against the law, but you can't find them. >>reporter: technolog apps like no more robo roots them to a dead end. true caller reveals who's behind that unknown number. but not all carriers support those services. schumer's bill requires phone carriers to provide a blocking service, but until it's battled out in congress, grosswald is not hanging up her complaints. >> the telephone companies or whatever like to put the calls through, that's how they get paid. >>reporter: some of the most

>> okay, alex, thank you. breaking news this morning in the bronx. terrifying moments as people jump to safety from a burning building. >> cbs 2's andrea grymes joins us live from the scene in bedford park. andrea. >>reporter: chris and mary, a neighbor told us it was scary to watch that one man jump from a window here from this fire in the bedford park section of the bronx. let's show you some video of the flames from earlier this morning. a total of 10 people were injured, all of them minor, except for that one man who was to jump. this is 261 east 202nd street. the fire started around 2:15 this morning on the first floor. the fire department says they were greeted by heavy smoke and flames when they initially arrived at the scene. they say it was tough to fight afterwards because of the dogs inside and just a large accumulation of stuff they said that made it difficult to extinguish after the heavy fire was put out, but difficult to

victims. we did speak with some residents inside. take a listen to what they had to say. >> glass was going everywhere, and then they were, you know, pushing my dad out of the way and a piece almost fell on my dad. the fireman pushed him out to make sure that he was okay. >>reporter: that woman and her family lived in the basement, but the man who jumped jumped from a first floor window. it's pretty high up, though, about 15 feet down. he was severely injured from from burns that he sustained. again, a total of 10 people injured. the fire department says they don't know exactly what caused this fire yet, but at this point it does not appear to be suspicious. reporting live in the bedford park section of the bronx, andrea grymes, cbs 2 news. >> andrea, thank you. police this morning are trying to identify a man wanted for questioning a queens rape suspect. the incident happened early in the morning on july 14th at a karaoke bar in murray hill.

was talking with the man for two hours and says he then assaulted her inside a rented room at the location. new information in the fatal shooting of a deli worker in the bronx. charges are now filed against the accused gunman. early tuesday two police officers escort 30-year-old efrain guzman out of a bedford park deli. police say he grab one of the officers' guns and opened fire. 49-year-old wallly camaro was killed. guzman was shot and wounded by the second officer. charges against guzman incle police officer and reckless endangerment. well, police are looking for a boater who took off after nearly crushing a long island mother. fisherman matthew scully says he was heading back home from reynolds channel off of island park sunday evening when a boater sped through a 5 mile per hour zone. he says a 30-foot cobalt blue cigarette boat slammed into his boat, smashing the windshield glass and knocking his wife unconscious. scully says he made eye contact with the man seen in this

>> no expression. i kind of put my hands up and said, really, you're leaving? this 30-foot monster on an 18- foot center console landed on top of us, on top of people and then sped off. >> scully's 13-year-old daughter an her friend were on board. they were not hurt. he says his wife is recovering, but she has three broken ribs and a fractured spine. campaign 2016, hillary clinton is in michigan for an address on the economy. donald trump holds a rally in central florida. yesterday clinton campaigned in io reacted to trump's remark that second amendment people could do something to stop her. >> words matter, my friends. donald trump simply does not have the temperment to be president and commander in chief. >> how do you think hillary would feel if e-mails were never invented, would she be happy? >> meanwhile, a guest at a trump rally yesterday has people talking.

street in the bedford park section of the bronx. this started at 2:15 this morning. the fire chief says heavy fire greeted them on the first floor when they arrived. there were also several dogs inside which made it difficult, in addition to a large accumulation, he said, of stuff which made it difficult to extinguish and then difficult to search for victims. the chief says when they got here that one resident had already jumped from a first floor window, about a 12-foot drop. smelling smoke, and while they smell the smoke, the system noticed that the fire was coming from a brother's bedroom. the brother was unable to evacuate from the interior, so she ran around the side and encouraged him to jump into the street. >>reporter: an that man who jumped had serious injuries, not only from the fall, but also from burns he sustained inside. in addition to that man, three firefighters were injured, in addition to six other residents. all of those people, though,

fire, but the chief says it is not suspicious and it was contained to this one building. reporting live in the bedford park section of the bronx, andrea grymes, cbs 2 news >> andrea, thank you. new video this morning of the suspect wanted for destroying seven tractor- trailers in east new york, brooklyn last month. police say the man in the video left seven vehicles, mostly garbage trucks torched. it took the fdny hours to put out all of those fires. five of the seven trucks have markings for tts trucking company in newark, leading some to believe targeted. a queens father is pleading with the public to help police catch his daughter's killer. 30-year-old karina vetrano was attacked last week as she jogged alone in a marshy area of spring creek park in howard beach. police say she'd been sexually assaulted and strangled. vertrano's father is a retired firefighter and 9/11 first responder. he says the family is raising money to add to the police

invited. people traped in a burning building. >> andrea grymes joins us live from the scene in bedford park. andrea. >>reporter: chris and mary, a total of 10 people were injured, including one man who had to jump from this burning home. now that the sun has come up, or started to, you can see the damage left behind and the window where that man jumped from earlier this morning. let's show you some video from around 2:00 where flames were shooting out of 261 east 202nd street. this is the or this started around 2:00, 2:15. the fire chief says heavy fire greeted them on the first floor when they initially arrived. they said -- he says there were also several dogs inside and a large accumulation of stuff which made this fire difficult to extinguish and difficult to search for victims. the chief says when they got here that one resident had already jumped from that first floor window. it's about a 12-foot drop. we spoke with another resident who lives in the basement.

bedford park, an dree a. >>reporter: well, chris and mary, one of those men had to actually jump from this burning home. let's show you some of the destruction left behind now that the sun has come up. you can see the damage there at the window where that man jumped 12 feet to the ground. he did survive but sustained serious injuries. a total of 10 people were injured in this fire. we'll show you video from earlier this morning of the flames shooting out of 261 east 2 bedford park section of the bronx. this started around 2:15 this morning. the fire chief says heavy smoke greeted them on the first floor when they arrived, along with several dogs. they said that may it difficult along with a large accumulation of stuff inside. he says that made it difficult to extinguish and difficult to search for victims. the chief says when they got here that one resident, that man we're told in his 40s had already jump ised from that
