6:14 am
i think we'll deal with it probably until 9:00. then it will be winding its way down. here you can see where most of the activity is. look to the north. we're talking about heavy snow that is going on. over half a foot of snow could fall across parts of northern new england this afternoon. so here's where the rain is right now. it does seem to be showing a trend of weakening just a little bit. then down through the south shore it's really light showers that we're talking about. a little bit of drizzle here or there. rainfall totals have not been that impressive. right around the lawrence area here up through portsmouth we did pick up three to four tentsz of an inch of rain out of the whole thing. down to the south shore much less. this will lift its way north ward. we'll get into mild air as we head through the afternoon. then this cold front comes through about 4:00 to 7:00. what you'll notice is a few scattered showers. not much. it doesn't have as much moisture with it as a warm front today. cold air will come flowing down over the top of us. that sets us up to a cold start for the week. a chance for seeing snow on tuesday. here's why. the storm system out of the central plains. you've been hearing about all the severe weather in texas last night.
6:15 am
what is going to happen is it is going to throw moisture up our way. not tonight but tomorrow night after midnight, we start to see some snow breaking out. so at 2:00 a.m. tuesday morning, we start we start to talk about snow which means during your morning commute we could see steadier bands of snow developing. the key is how much warm air mixes in. it goes to a mix and then to rain quickly. as we head towards late morning you start to see what happens. it lifts its way north ward. land it will stay snow longer. along the coast it should be turning over to some rain. then we'll wind it all down by late tuesday afternoon. so it begins to snow for everyone after midnight tomorrow night. then we talk about snow changing over to sleet at around 10:00 in the morning. and then as we head towards noon, it's rain at the coast but still sleet inland. remember, sleet doesn't pile up like snow but it makes everything very, very slippery out there. you'll want to be cautious about that. early estimates on this right now, this is all dependent on a fairly quick changeover to warmer air.
6:16 am
the mass pike and 2-5 inches across northern parts of the state into southern new hampshire. you get farther north, that's where the heavy stuff is. down to the south the mixing will be a little bit faster. that's why i think we'll keep the totals down. again it's all dependent on those temperatures. that time of the day, boy, it's going to be a close call. do be cautious about that and give yourself plenty of extra time as we talk about tuesday morning's er forecast. look what happens. today it's 56. tomorrow it's 36. 20 degrees colder. but you know what? this is where we're suppose to be this time of year. we do get a little bit of a break. we clear things out as we talk about wednesday's forecast. then for any of you sell bureing first night, you know, the weather doesn't look like that bad. temperatures will be into the 40's. there may be a sprinkle early for the people's procession but i think as the fireworks go off, we're just going to be looking at cloudy skies. overall, it's not looking like too bad of a forecast for this time of year. you're just not used to it. we'll be talking'' that dramatic temperature drop tomorrow and then that chance of seeing some snow and mix as we look at tuesday's forecast. antoinette and doug.
