(creaming and laughing). erika: a great laugh. doug: also on the eye. a new experience for this grandmother is going viral this morning. her step into virtual reality sweeping the internet. i still don't know what she's watching but she loves it. good morning, i'm doug meehan. erika: i'm erika tarantal with cindy fitzgibbon. randy and emily are off today. i know what cindy is watching. cindy: yes, i am. doug: i've heard her like that over at the computer. cindy: here comes the snow. oh, my goodness. we've waited long enough. we've got our first snow of the season on the way. it's not a lot. just a little. but bad timing with tomorrow morning's commute. overnight tonight through midday tomorrow, we have winter weather advisories in effect for snow initially and then some icing and rain which is going to make for just a messy traveling tomorrow morning. look at these temperatures out the door. this is what it feels like to you. these are the wind chills right now running mostly in the 20's. actual air temperatures are hovering near or just above the

32 worcester. 34 in boston. throughout the day, wind chills are going to hold in the 20's. temperatures holding fairly steady. only in the lower 30's all day long despite some sunshine. it's that northerly wind 10-20 miles per hour. draining down some cold air from canada with high pressure anchored to our north. this is key as our storm system approaches bringing severe weather down over the gulf coast states today. this storm is going to run into that cold air. the results will be some snow breaking out right around midnight tonight. and through about 6:00 tomorrow morning, we'll get a quick thump of snow before we start to change things on over to sleet and eventually freezing rain and rain. greatest snowfall through 6:00 tomorrow morning. thereafter at 10:00 we're changing that over to sleet, ice and rain. certainly big impacts for tomorrow morning's commute. let's get you out to the roads right now and check on your monday morning commute. good morning. olessa: good morning. so far we're looking okay for the most part. we were watching heavy delays here on the expressway northbound. this is right by the gas tank. that northbound side starting to

accident cleared away near the o'neill tunnel. let's go to the maps. now that crash once again northbound expressway just cleared near the government center. your ride now is still backed up to granite avenue. about a 30-minute trip braintree to boston. no problems south of there. we're still doing okay. the pike is quiet. route 9 as well. if you're traveling north of town no delays out of methuen. that volume does pick up approaching spot pond just a little bit. and the trains and buses running on schedule. doug. doug: thank you very much. breaking overnight. police are searching for the driver who slammed right into a cafe in lynn. we're told it started with a traffic stop for a report of a stolen vehicle. the driver took off but the s.u.v. kept going crashing through the wall of the walnut street cafe. no one was hurt. right now police are searching for the driver who ran a woman down and just took off. erika: the eyeopener's antoinette antonio is live in malden with what we know at this hour. antoinette? antoinette: and erika, police are not saying a lot about this investigation, but what we do know is that the victim was a woman in her 70's. she was hit while she was trying

in this crosswalk. last night here on pleasant street in malden. the victim was taken to melrose-wakefield hospital with life-threatening injuries. as for that driver, police will s.u.v. was seen leaving this area. no word this morning on any arrests or any possible suspects in the case. malden police are asking anyone who knows any information about this hit-and-run crash to give them a call. we're live in malden this morning, antoinette antonio, wcvb, newscenter 5. >> oh, my god! (siren) that's a tornado. erika: you can just hear the terror in that woman's voice. this morning, nine tornadoes are confirmed in texas wreaking havoc on the state. at least eleven people are dead in that state alone. communities just in ruins. the christmas twisters marched across the texas landscape. in the neighborhood of roulet,

trees from the earth. the twister that hit garland, texas, was clocked as an ef-4. >> you can see the transformers blowing up. erika: the survivors count themselves luckily. >> we're grateful we're all safe. erika: in missouri flooding like this led to several deaths and led the governor to declare a state of emergency sunday night. in oklahoma, west texas, and new mexico, snow created whiteout conditions on the roads. >> just last week it was 60 degrees in roswell. today everything is covered in snow. erika: trucks out of control rest in the snow bank. more than 20 motorists were stranded on i-40 between amarillo and the new mexico border. in western oklahoma, the national guard has been deployed to help people stranded. all of this weather impacting air travel too. more than a thousand flights in the u.s. canceled. more than 4,000 delayed. >> i would call it living hell. erika: that winter weather is on the move. there's a winter storm warning in chicago.

reporting. she'll break down the impact and the timing in just a few minutes. doug: quincy credit union customers are expecting their debit accounts to work today. they were shut down yesterday because of fraudulent activity; others were drained. the bank c.e.o. says, in all, at least 670 out of some 10,000 cards may have been compromised. bank employees worked late last night trying to resolve the issue by taking special precautions. those included putting restrictions on debit card and a.t.m. use and blocking compromised cards. the bank thinks a.t.m. skimmers stole the information locally. then counterfeit cards were sold in new york. >> i guess some of the larger banks are probably a bigger target. maybe you think a small-town credit union probably isn't on the radar but obviously, you know, nobody is too small. doug: the bank posted updates on facebook all day yesterday, but some customers say they wish they'd been called. now customers are being encouraged to check for

accounts. they're also being reminded that those accounts are insured and money from fraudulent transactions will be returned. >> she had nothing to do with this. she was just answering the door for the police. erika: outrage in chicago after a woman is accidentally shot and killed by police. officers were responding to a domestic call saturday when 55-year-old neighbor bettie jones was shot by mistake. the city's embattled mayor is asking the entire police department to review crisis training in the wake of the killing. right now boston police are searching for suspect after a teenager was stabbed near the jackson square "t" station in mattapan. orange line service was suspended because of the investigation. the victim is expected to survive. back in october another teenager was stabbed to death at that same station. the mbta promised increased security after 17-year-old mason raymond was killed during a fight with another teen. doug: right now boston police

rosewood street in mattapan. it happened around 8:30 last night. a man was hit but he is expected to recover. two people were shot on that same street last january. a setback this morning for a teenager shot in dorchester on saturday. his uncle tells "the herald" doctors did not remove a bullet from the boy's leg for fear he'd bleed out. police are still looking for whoever shot the 14-year-old on stratton street. the boy says he and a friend were walking when they were approached by a man and woman, and things got physical. erika: commitment 2016. donald trump is headed back to new hampshire tonight. the g.o.p. frontrunner will hold a rally at pennichuck middle school in nashua. that's at 7:00 p.m. the latest polls show trump ahead of the pack with just six weeks to go before the new hampshire primary. republican jeb bush will also be in the granite state this week. he heads to peterborough tomorrow. and hillary clinton is looking to close the gap in new hampshire making stops in portsmouth and berlin on tuesday. doug: this morning red sox fans

overnight through tomorrow midday. that's where we have the winter weather advisory up for snow, eventually changing over to ice and then plain rain by tomorrow afternoon. i think the snow breaks out after midnight. it will be snowing for part. morning commute but between 8:00 and 10:00 tomorrow morning, we're going to quickly see that snow start to change over to some sleet, some freezing rain. icing is is a concern tomorrow. as we get toward noontime, there will be rain at the coast with an easterly wind. but over the interior, sleet, freezing rain may hang for a time into the afternoon. we're setting the stage for this storm today. look at these temperatures in the lower 0's right now. worcester is 32. lawrence to boston 34. mid and upper 30's on the cape. it doesn't feel like it. you want to dress for wind chills in the 20's this morning. day. the wind chills are going to hold in the 20's all day long even though we've got some sun breaking out. it's this wind coming down out of the north that is going to keep the temperatures down. so these are the highs this afternoon.

temperatures don't change today as that cold air is draining down out of canada around an area of high pressure. so this is initially going to allow some snow to break out as our storm to the south approaches. this storm will track to our west. so we're going to drag warmer air in with it. let me step you through the timeline. through 8:00 tonight it will be dry. clouds will be thickening up though. after midnight we're going to watch that snow start to break out so that by 2:00 tomorrow morning there will be snow getting started across the area. that snow will be with us for a few hours. by 6:00 tomorrow morning though, down on the south shore, the cape, notice the pink coloring here. we're already starting to change it over to sleet and eventually rain. snow though will linger up through parts of the north shore, the merrimack valley and southern new hampshire through i think about 8:00 or 9:00 tomorrow morning. then we're seeing that mixing taking over with plain rain here on the south coast and the cape. by noontime, i think 495 to the coast, we're talking about rainfall that's outside of 495. there may be some freezing rain

afternoon so it's not a lot of snow. it looks like a coating to an inch once you get south of boston. but right along the coastline closer to an inch and then as you travel west, there could be locally up to three inches out toward the worcester area. more than that as you get north of route 2 up into southern new hampshire where there could be a little bit more than three inches of snow there. by tomorrow afternoon it's close to 40 degrees at the coastline but over the interior still hovering close to that freezing mark. areas in pink is where i am concerned there could be a little bit of freezing rain even as we get into tomorrow afternoon. messy for you on tuesday. we head into wednesday. it looks dry through the first part of the day. temperatures in the 40's means rain coming at us late in the day lingering into thursday morning but by new year's eve, if you have plans, it does look dry. temperatures near 40 degrees as we kick off the new year. looking good as we head toward the weekend. olessa: we just have to get through tomorrow. cindy: yes we do. our first go at it. olessa: the first one is always tough. thank you, cindy.

in reading. sky 5 over the scene of a crash on 128. this is a northbound accident right by route 129. lots of crews on the scene. the entrance ramp is blocked and so is the right lane so it will be a little bit of a slow-go through the area. the good news is there's not a lot of volume on the roads today. too much. will it's go to maps. once again that accident north by 129. one lane and the entrance ramp is closed. better news on the expressway north where an accident has just center. back to granite avenue. about a half-hour braintree to boston. northbound on 95 a little bit of volume aproafing 128. morning. and then 93 southbound not bad out of methuen. a little bit of volume near spot pond. trains and buses still running on schedule. doug: thank you very much. state's public records law to the test and finding most cities and towns getting a failing grade. erika: our mike beaudet teamed up with "the boston globe" and northeastern university for what's believed to be the

conducted in massachusetts. students in the investigative journalism class at northeastern university taking on the role of average citizens looking for public records. they asked every city and town in the state for a copy of their payroll and the police department's policy on when officers can use their weapons. state law requires a meaningful response within 10 days. but the majority of the state's 351 cities and towns failed that test, responding either late or not at all during the 40-day test. >> are you ignoring our public records request? >> no. here. here. here's all the information right here. in here. >> this includes payroll? >> all payroll. >> it seems like you could have just mailed this off back then. >> i had no time to do it. erika: a group representing cities and towns says nobody is trying to hide information but that public records requests can be too much work. but others say the findings show that the public records law, which hasn't been updated in 42

the victim was taken to melrose-wakefield hospital with life-threatening injuries. erika: at least nine tornadoes are now confirmed in texas causing a swath of devastation. eleven people are killed in saturday's storms. as many 1,400 homes may have been damaged by the severe weather. doug: right now two women are preparing to face a judge accused in a baby hoax that put rescue crews at risk. erika: the eyeopener's sera congi is live in haverhill with the charges they're facing this morning. sera: good morning, erika and doug. those two women are actually mother and daughter. police say they claimed that they saw a man throw a baby into the merrimack river. this all happened on the night of christmas eve. the report prompted a massive search including a helicopter and dive team. police say holly and kristine fowler, who live near the river, reported seeing a man on the phone along the bridge throw a baby into the water and then run away.

interviews with the two women revealed that it had been a hoax. now it is still unknown why the two women made up the story. we could learn more about that at the arraignment today. the fowlers face charges including misleading a police investigation as well as filing a false report. live in haverill, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. erika: thank you. the trial of a suspected kidnapper is being pushed back to the summer. nathaniel kibby's trial is now scheduled to start on june 20. it had originally been planned for march. the new hampshire man is accused of kidnapping a teenage girl in north conway and holding her captive for eight months. he faces more than 200 charges and could go away for life, if convicted. new this morning. a tip in an infamous art heist led the f.b.i. to the suffolk downs race track in east boston. "the globe" reports agents conducted a day-long search back in september. investigators checked out the barns and parts of the grandstand that have been closed for years. but they didn't find anything. they were looking for 13 masterpieces stolen from boston's isabella stewart gardner museum in the 1990's. doug: the chipotle restaurant

people got sick is back in business this morning. but getting back to full speed is slow going. sunday was a quiet day for the cleveland circle locatoin. since the norovirus outbreak, the restaurant was shut down and scrubbed clean. because of the suspended license, this chipotle is now subject to more frequent inspections. most restaurants are inspected once a year. >> we'll do spot checks unannounced and make sure things are right. they are now scheduled now for inspections every three months. we'll do this for six months to a year. doug: the commissioner has such faith in the inspection system, he says he plans to have lunch there today. erika: new this morning. boston's public works department has already spent its entire overtime budget mostly on special events. a "herald" review found that city employees were paid more than $1.3 million in overtime with only 45 percent of it going to repair and infrastructure work. a chunk of $300,000 went to

erika. erika: cindy, thank you. another heart-warming gift for a new york state girl who has touched so many. safyre terry was badly burned in a fire. all she wanted for christmas this year was christmas cards. and, did she get them! the eight-year-old has gotten cards from president obama and beyonce. but she recently found a special one in the bags and bags of mail-- one from her favorite singer, katy perry. the card said, "i hope you have a wonderful christmas and a great new year. i'll be thinking of you on christmas day, special girl." perry also sent along a dvd of her world tour, a backpack, a copy of her documentary, and a purse shaped like a cat. doug: that's great. a rhode island girl receives a surprise from a secret santa. four-year-old deonna coates has cerebral palsy. her parents have been looking for a motorized scooter for years but haven't been able to find one that fits her needs. but on christmas morning, the family discovered a new set of wheels outside their warwick home with a bow and card from

doug: welcome back. just turning 6:45 on this monday morning. clear skies as we kick off your news to go on this monday. but they're not going to stay that way. winter is officially coming. erika: cindy's tracking snow. cindy: it's taking long enough to finally move on in. we haven't seen anything, as you know, so far. the first one out of the gate is always a tough one. this won't be a big storm for us. the timing not good for tomorrow morning's commute. expect the snow to begin after midnight tonight. and it will snow for several hours but by mid to late morning tomorrow, we're transitioning over to some sleet and rain. during the afternoon hours, it's going to be raining for most of us. but once you get outside of 495, this area shaded in pink is where we could have some

afternoon as a coastal front may set up with that easterly wind allowing that warmer ocean air to kind of penetrate all the way back to 495. north and west of 495 even into tomorrow afternoon, there could be some lingering pockets of freezing rain. here is our storm coming up out of the gulf coast states with severe expected today. on the wintery side of that storm pushing into the chicago area. we've got high pressure coming out of canada training down colder air. so this colder air is going to work in over the course of the day. it's 34 degrees in boston right now. 32 in worcester. upper 30's on the cape. temperatures though go nowhere today. they'll hold steady despite sunshine and wind chills throughout the day. they are going to be hovering in the 20's pretty much all day long so bundle up today. snow breaking out as mentioned midnight. and it is going to be snowing for the early part of tomorrow morning's commute but notice from south to north that area of sleet and freezing rain penetrating north ward pretty quickly so that by about 9:00 in the morning, north shore, merrimack valley, you're still hanging on to the snow but not for long.

cafe in lynn. we're told it started with a traffic stop for a report of a stolen vehicle. the driver took off but the s.u.v. kept going crashing through the wall of the walnut street cafe. no one was hurt. right now police in malden are searching for a hit-and-run driver. doug: the eye's antoinette antonio is live on the scene with what we know this morning. antoinette? antoinette: doug, we know very little about this investigation but what we've learned is is that woman who was hit in this crosswalk right here was a victim in her 70's. police say that driver took off. this happened around 8:00 last night here as the woman was trying to cross pleasant street. she was taken to melrose-wakefield hospital with life-threatening injuries. as for that driver, police will only say that a dark-colored s.u.v. was seen leaving this area. no word on any arrests or possible suspects in this case. malden police are asking anyone with any information to give them a call. live in malden this morning, antoinette antonio, wcvb, newscenter 5. sera: a mother and daughter from

after claiming they saw a man throw a baby off a bridge into the merrimack river. that report launched a massive search on the night of christmas eve which included a helicopter and dive team. police called off the search because they determined the claim was a hoax. 42-year-old holly fowler and her 23-year-old daughter kristine police investigation and filing a false report. it is still unclear exactly why they made this alleged hoax. we could learn more about that live in haverill, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. doug: thank you. at least eleven people are dead after tornadoes sweep across texas. nine twisters are confirmed in the northern part of the state. as many as 600 homes were damaged in one dallas suburb alone. erika: quincy credit union customers are expecting their debit accounts to work today. they were shut down yesterday because of fraudulent activity; others were drained. the bank c.e.o. says, in all, at least 670 out of some 10,000

there are now special precautions in place including putting restrictions on debit card and a.t.m. use and blocking compromised cards. the bank thinks a.t.m. skimmers stole the information locally. then counterfeit cards were sold in new york. doug: donald trump is headed back to new hampshire tonight. the g.o.p. frontrunner will hold a rally at pennichuck middle school in nashua. that's at 7:00 p.m. the latest polls show trump ahead of the pack with just six weeks to go before the new hampshire primary. a bridgewater man says someone is stealing his trump campaign signs repeatedly. joe ricci tells our partners at "the enterprise" he's had more than a dozen signs stolen off his lawn in the past five months. so, he set up a surveillance camera and says he caught the thief in the act. ricci says the son of one of his neighbors is to blame. he adds supporting trump isn't popular in his neighborhood. erika: iraqi security forces say they've taken "full control" of the city of ramadi. the iraqi government had been trying to reclaim the city for

specifically, security forces are claiming control of a strategically important government compound. a spokesperson for the u.s.-led coalition says it's an important step, but there's more fighting to be done. doug: a very important item is now back with a boston family after a devastating fire. flames destroyed the house on alpha road in dorchester saturday night. yesterday, salvage crews discovered an american flag. a woman who lives there was presented with that flag at her father's funeral. crews also managed to retrieve several photo albums. firefighters say a candle is to blame for the fire. erika: right now lowell police are searching for the person who attacked a vietnam veteran and robbed him of nearly $2,000. 63-year-old john looney says the money came from his disabled veterans benefits. he was just steps from his home on bridge street when he was attacked from behind on saturday morning. looney was dazed but not seriously hurt. doug: the hunt is on for a pair of masked robbers who pulled off a scary heist at a worcester bar. police say the armed men burst into mcguire's lounge early

they went through the cash register and even fired a round into the ceiling. about a dozen people were inside the bar at the time. no one was hurt. erika: new hampshire state police say they caught this guy driving 108 miles per hour. he was clocked at that speed on saturday night in the white mountains where the speed limit is 55. police also say peter mazzilli admitted there was pot in the car when they pulled him over and added the sports car he was driving was unregistered. >> i love her. please don't leave me. doug: a man falls to his death in california. this morning witnesses tell police he was distracted by an electronic device when he walked off san diego's sunset cliffs. the man fell more than 40 feet to the rocks below. the 33-year-old was from indiana. erika: some disturbing video out of california. you can see the woman in this surveillance video throwing a pug. animal control officers say they think the woman has abused the dog before. police are still looking for her. her roommate tried to explain the incident to reporters, saying the woman took the dog

boyfriend. announcer: to left field and he goes back and it's gone! unbelievable! doug: still gives me chills. this morning red sox fans are remembering a man who had a huge impact on the team's world series dreams in 1986. dave "hendu" henderson hit that home run in game 5 with the sox just one strike from elimination. he died of a massive heart attack yesterday. henderson played just two seasons in boston, but as red sox president sam kennedy said, he was always "one of us." he was 57 years old. erika: celtics at the garden last night against the knicks. marcus smart was back for the first time in 18 games. he played for 13 minutes and scored half a dozen points. jae crowder managing to turn offense into defense for the c's at one point. carmello anthony brought the knicks within five with five minutes to go. but the c's were too good. 100-91 the final. doug: bruins up in ottawa

storm system pulls up out of the deep south loaded with moisture. that will allow snow to break out. as we get to around midnight into the wee hours of the morning. by 6:00 tomorrow morning notice it's snowing across a good portion of the area. but already mixing to the south. that mixing is going to penetrate north ward. we'll hang on to snow the longest across southern new hampshire but we may hang on to some pockets of freezing rain into the afternoon outside of 495. while inside of 495 (no audio) the amounts of snow aren't terribly high. northern worcester county, southern new hampshire 3-5. elsewhere a coating up to 3 inches of snow. a lot of that gets washed away as we climb inthoo the upper 0's to around 40 degrees in the afternoon. another batch of rain coming in late wednesday to thursday morning but it's out of here for your new year's eve plans. it does look dry and chilly as we bring in the new year. dry weather and cooler weather into next weekend. may start to feel like winter here. tough travel. doug: first night activities downtown and all around.
