5:03 am
southern maine. elsewhere a lot of sleet. that sleet may persist north and west of boston from mid to late morning but by lunchtime, it is raining in most areas with some freezing rain north and west of boston. that is is certainly going to make traveling very tricky. that is the case right now. i want to get you out to the roads and talk about the conditions that we're facing out there this morning. our own doug meehan is out there battling it all this morning. good morning, doug. doug: good morning, cindy. it is is not a pretty sight out here this morning. we are on route 3 northbound. we just crossed into billerica. to say it's better than 128 is stretching it a bit. we've got speeds at about pushing 40 miles an hour, but the road conditions are just awful. it looks like the plows have at least come through this stretch. we're seeing a little bit more volume on the southbound side but we just left 128 on the northbound through lexington. speeds were down to 25, 30 miles
5:04 am
and it was really messy. so we're starting to work our way north a little bit. we're getting a mixture of that snow and rain and ice and slush. it's making the roads very treacherous. speeds are way down. so there are folks that are out there getting to work this morning. there are plows out here. haven't seen many salters or sanders. mostly plows working. we haven't gotten behind one just yet in our, well, basically 45 minutes out on the roads here. we're going to head north. we're going to go one more exit and head south and then make our way back on to 128 and try to get out on to route 2 and show you what things are like there in our next hit. but in the meantime, we're live on the roadways on route 3. i'm doug meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5. back to olessa. olessa: thank you, doug. good morning, everyone. not a very pleasant drive on the roads this morning. a live look at the pike. this is by allston/brighton. you can see just a small blanket of white on the roads. that could do a lot of damage.
5:05 am
let's get to the maps because a few incidents, a pretty busy one here if you're traveling through lowell this morning. 495 northbound. the road is actually closed by route 3 at the lowell connector for an accident. another crash on route 3 itself at 495 just cleared away. once you get beyond that, 9 not looking much better. southbound side by route 16. we have a crash there blocking a lane. two accidents on 24 now south of town we're seeing mostly rain but as you can see it's still doing damage. 24 northbound by route 27. another accident by route 139 on the southbound side. and then you just saw what the pike looks like by allston/brighton. that's pretty much the conditions as you travel west of there and make your way out to framingham. be careful and give yourself that extra travel time. very slick roads especially the secondary roadways. exit and entrance ramps are going to be hard to get around. budge net the extra travel time. if you do have to head out. for now trains and bus s are on schedule. we'll keep you posted on that. ke, the timing is is not good for the morning commute. mike: not at all. we're seeing a variety of different kinds of precipitation.
5:06 am

winter weather advisory up until midday here in eastern most massachusetts but it continues right on in to this evening out in the central and western part of the state. as we'll watch the snow change to sleet and eventually ice and rain but slippery travel a concern throughout the day. if you're looking for the snow to really accumulate, you have to head north. this is a storm that will hit ski country up over six inches in vermont, western maine, the mountains going to do very well here. as you get further south we're seeing that warmer air transition things over. now through 7:00 this morning, snow and sleet kind of transitioning to more sleet than anything else. as we get towards 10:00 this morning, that sleet is changing over to rain especially at the coastline. by lunchtime, it is raining in all areas. but the concern will be the temperatures as you get away from the coast. they may still be near the freezing mark. freezing rain will be a concern. right now it's in the lower 20's, places like keene, orange,
5:16 am
boston to plymouth to the cape all running above the freezing mark. that water temperature 47 degrees. we've got an easterly wind screaming off the water so that's why it will be hard to maintain these temperatures cold enough for the snow at the low levels. all the while we have warmer air working up with our storm too in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere. you can seem down around d.c., pittsburgh and down into west virginia it's in the 40's and 50s. that's the wanter that is going to come in as our storm approaches. already seeing that changeover to rain around the new york city area. that will be lifting north ward. getting some rain right noun down along the islands. elsewhere it is a messy mix. we'll be taking a closer look at this with mike wankum. as we move forward in time, what we're going to see is that the snow pushes out by 7:00 this morning. it is up in the new hampshire seacoast and into southern maine, watch that area of rain push into boston by about 8:30-9:00 this morning. north and west of town sleet will change over to rain as we get towards lunchtime. we're going to watch those temperature over the interior as the precipitation tapers off this afternoon.
5:17 am
the snow, the sleet. more of those details. mike: i've got to show you this. this is just coming in. this is our own live doppler radar. we're seeing rain to mix to snow only encompasses about a 40-mile range. that's why you can just stay in one spot and see all kinds of weather being thrown at you. one of the things we're talking about today is sleet. it starts as snow and falls through a layer of the warmer. it melts those snow flakes and they refreeze on the bo om side of that warm air and hit the ground. the way you can tell it is they bounce. the sleet actually bounces off your coat and car. you may hear it going on out there. snowfall totals while not that impressive will be slippery. we're mixing a lot of ice and sleet and everything elsz with it. so just a coating to two inches from western part of the city out towards the worcester area but a little bit more as you travel north where the temperatures are cold enough. one other thing we'll be watching with cold temperatures at the surface and some warm air moving in, we may have ice starting to build up and especially as you look out
5:18 am
could get as much as a half inch piling up on things. that might bring down power lines. cindy: with that icing out in the central and western part of the state the power is a concern but also just traveling. look at these temperatures by this afternoon. it's running in the low to mid 30's out through worcester county on up into southern new hampshire. 40's along the coastline and then we're going to see the temperatures fall a little bit more as we head into this evening. even as the precipitation is tapering off as this storm pulls away there may be low-level moisture. freezing drizzle is a concern overnight and even first thing tomorrow morning. keep that in mind but the bulk of the day tomorrow is dry. we're watching this system come up from the south. this could bring a little bit of rain overnight wednesday night into first thing thursday morning especially on the south coast and the cape. but then it clears on out which is great timing and great news for any first night plans that you have. if you're heading into the city, looks like temperatures in the earl he evening near 40. then they're drop to go the 30's but it will be dry. not a lot of wind. notice the cold is settling in for the first of the year friday through the weekend.
5:19 am
not getting out of the 30's. by monday of next week, not out of the 20's. suddenly it is looking like winter outside. olessa: and feeling like winter. cindy: the seven-day forecast outside as well. olessa: wuerffel that comes messy commutes. not a pleasant drive out there one of the toughest commutes in a while. here's a live look for you. the pike by allston/brighton is eastbound move to go the top of the screen. as you can see, that blanket of snow on the roads. i just saw plows go through on the westbound side so you can see a little bit of that blacktop there. you want to be careful and give yourself that extra travel time. morning and got here at the same time i usually do. budget in that time. let's go to the maps. we're watching a couple problem spots. a closure on 495 in lowell still shut down northbound by route 3 for an accident in the process of clearing. a crash on 93 south by route 16. that one has a lane blocked right now. and then two spinouts on route 24 northbound by route 27. and southbound by 139 so very tricky ride whether you're heading north or south of town.

5:32 am
but you can just see what we got into right now. 128 south, a wreck here. we don't know if there's any injuries involved but it's going to slow people up. so i guess the suggestion is you've heard it a million times during these snow storms. you don't have to be out here. you really shouldn't. just give yourself a little extra time if you do have to get out here. we're going to keep traveling south and get on out to route 2 and start to head north. in the meantime i'm doug meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5. olessa, how is the commute. olessa: good morning, everyone. yes, that stretch of 128 has been treacherous since the early morning hours since i drove through it. here's a live look at the pike. this looks better. plows just went through the stretch here by allston/brighton on the eastbound side as well as the westbound side so they are getting out there. as you just saw 128 not looking much better right now. let's get to the maps and see the rest of your ride. as you travel north of town we're watching this crash. a jack-knifed tractor trailer. 495 northbound by route 3 in lowell you have that accident by the loal connector with only the

i mean, it is just snow covered. as cindy was mentioning earlier, we kind of get into a mix or a changeover into more sleet. it looks like snow as it's coming down but when it hits the windshield, it sounds like sleet or ice. you mix that with the snow that fell earlier out here and you really do have some dangerous road conditions. we saw an accident out there on 128 on the southbound side involving a tractor trailer truck and jeep. that was on lexington-- in lexington before you get to two-way. what we're trying to do right now, as a matter of fact, we are crossing over 128 right now as we try to make our loop on to 128 north. we're going to go see if we can find that tractor trailer mess up on 495. so we'll keep you updated out here on the roadways. give yourselves plenty of extra time. the same old song but you'll get to your destination safely.

we will eventually transition over to rain this afternoon in all areas but that rain may still be freezing on contact out through the worcester area and so winter weather advisories are up through the day for you. look at all the colors. green indicating plain rain right now. a lot of it on the cape and islands. a lot of sleet in the pink and purple color. still a good amount of snow mixing with sleet at times here up through the merrimack valley and into southern new hampshire. here too you're eventually changing over to sleet. we're going to continue to watch that transition process from snow to sleet through 9:00 a.m. sleet will turn to rain along the coastline and then during the afternoon hours, that freezing rain may linger north and west of 495 on into the afternoon so concerns with this are two-fold. there's a concern for slippery travel but also with some icing, there could be localized power outages as well. something to think about. you can see it's only in the 20's right now. those easterly wind are warming the temperatures up along the coastline. there's warm air come up with our storm from the south. we are seeing that transition

5:50 am
the totals will not be impressive compared to last winter anyway. for our first one it's a nice way to ease into the winter i suppose. a coating to two two inches. a lot of that is sleet. it's very, very slippery stuff. as you were pointing ow, cindy, out to the west we may have a freezing rain situation out there. that could mean ice secretions. that means we build up the ice on surfaces including power lines which could be an issue or tree limbs. that could be a problem as well. near the coast it will be primarily warm enough that we're talking about rain. cindy: about 3:00 this afternoon, the temperatures here are hovering very close to freezing out through worcester county and up into the merrimack valley. at the coastline with that easterly wind it is in the lower 40's but here too temperatures fall back this evening so as our storm pulls away, we're really going to see the precipitation let up late this afternoon but there could be pockets of freezing drizzing overnight and first thing tomorrow morning. keep that in mind. tomorrow is primarily a dry day. we are watching a: 00 down the coast.
