8:07 am
the other car drove off. antoinette: the victim is hospitalized after having surgery. he is expected to survive. doug: commitment 2016. another controversy at a rally trump. this time in south carolina. rose hamid was escorted out of the event last night. she stood up silently when trump suggested that syrian refugees are affiliated with isis. trump supporters started boo-ing her and yelling things like, "you have a bomb." hamid says she didn't want to disrupt the event; she just wanted to show trump fans what a muslim actually looks like. >> i have this sincere belief that if people get to know each other one on one that they'll stop being afraid of each other and we'll be able to get rid of all this hate in the world literally. that was my goal is to let people see that muslims are not that scary. doug: trump responded by calling the hatred unbelievable, saying it is quote "their hatred, not

8:10 am
the drawing is tonight. you can catch the winning numbers right here on channel 5. we'll carry the drawing live during our 11:00 p.m. newscast. doug: just awesome. by the way, this woman hasn't won powerball yet but don't count her out. jane hoyt from lynn collected $1 million off a $30 scratch ticket in june. and she did it again on wednesday off another instant ticket. she plans on putting her winnings toward her recent retirement. that's a good retirement. antoinette: do you think she keeps on buying tickets and will buy a power ball ticket. doug: it was interesting because i saw $30 scratch on that script this morning. i had been away for a years. i didn't know you could buy a single scratch ticket for $30. antoinette: play big, win big. on the way this morning, a bizarre plot leads to weapons charges against a north dakota man. doug: the alleged plan the guy had for the first family's two dogs. mexico's most wanted escapee is back in custody.

8:13 am
donation. antoinette: sturgeon owns another mansion that he plans to rent out to a second family who suffered great loss when ten tornadoes ripped through northern texas last month. doug: very generous indeed. more like a dallas january than a boston january. mike: we haven't had any cold to talk about. i was listening to the commercial. they're making snow. that's great. doug: a wa-wa-washout. emily: exactly. weather. it's warm enough right now that this is the scene from look at that. point. if you look in boston, we don't have anything falling yet. i have a little bit outside the drizzle that i'm talking about that is barely discernible. you walk out there. i don't know if you even need to this morning. happening. through there. notice the trend on this. as it gets closer to the coast
8:14 am
starts to change over to rain. it was a little bit of mixed snow and then it kind of worked its way eastward into that rain. that's what we'll be dealing with today. spotty showers here or there. you see that line forms right along here. take our radars and scan through there from newbury port down to gloucester. a little bit of mix showing up south of newburyport. as you travel through ipswich steadier shower. here's the steady shower i walked outside into. it isn't much. waltham has steadier shower there. once you get to this line here, right as you're passing through framingham and you're heading out towards westborough, you're probably getting a little bit of snow mixing in with it. again really really light stuff. the only thing i'm concerned about is if you had a surface that was, say, untreated. it might be slippery this morning. right now in boston 40 degrees, gray skies. easterly wind. that will stay that way all day today. we're pretty much going to reflect the ocean temperatures. the ocean temperatures are in the lower to mid 40's at this point. that will allow us to warm up to about 46 degrees. otherwise inland away from that,
8:15 am
pockets of cooler temperatures. a few icy spots this morning. through the next hour or hour-and-a-half we'll be warming up. it won't be an issue at all. heading south of the city temperatures into the 30's and 40's right now. so today cloudy skies. spot drizzle. most of it really this morning 38-46 degrees for your high temperature and easterly wind. then tonight under cloudy skies, it is going to get foggy out there. temperatures will not drop off much at all. the rain will be well after midnight tonight. probably closer to 3:00 or 4:00 in the morning before we start to see anything. let me timeline it out for you. 10:00 this morning a lot of gray skies. spotty showers here or there. drizzle at best. then as we head towards 5:00 in the morning here you start to see a little more activity starting to form up. watch what comes in from the west. this is when the main rain starts to come in. after 9:00 into boston. certainly as we're talking about 1:00 in the afternoon some downpours. and chalk it off to watching thee vee because not much will be going on outside. it will be warm and windy out there but there will be rain all over the place. might even be a rumble of
8:16 am
it all clears away as we talk about tomorrow night. how much rain are we talking about? some places getting close to an inch or possibly a little bit more than that with those downpours. if you're stuck in one of those that rumbles with thunder, you might get close to two inches of rain. as far as records are concerned tomorrow, boston and worcester very close to it. but the other thing you'll notice, the winds. strong out of the southeast, gusting perhaps as much as 50 miles per hour. i wouldn't even be surprise od the cape if we get a wind gust of 60 miles per hour. so there will be some wind and there will be a lot of warm air coming with this. that's why tomorrow it's 56 degrees but look what happens after it. the cold air comes flowing right back in here. we're talking about into the 30's. that snow i've got in there on tuesday night right now it looks like it will pass through here and really blow up into a storm well out over the ocean. we're not going to get much out of it right now. we'll keep a close eye out. the week ahead featuring supposed to be. not the 50's tomorrow. more like the 0's.
8:17 am
8:18 is the time. checking some of the stories the eye is following right now. antoinette: after months on the run, one of the world's most wanted men is now back behind bars. the mexican drug lord joaquin in a shootout with mexican marines. he's been on the run for six months after escaping from prison in july. american prosecutors want him extradited to face charges here related to his drug empire. the national oceanic and atmospheric administration says damage from wintertime floods, like the one along the mississippi river, will top $1 billion. antoinette: a man who allegedly plotted to steal the president's dogs is now facing weapons charges. scott stockert of north dakota was arrested in washington, d.c., on wednesday with a stash of weapons in his car. he allegedly told police he was jesus christ and that he planned to run for president after
8:18 am
dogs. secret service agents say stockert is not a registered gun owner. he was arraigned friday released with a monitoring device. doug: new year's resolutions but if your goal is to exercise more, researchers say you might videos. a new study finds home video workouts can create an unrealistic body image. and they can cause viewers to want to work out less. that's because one in seven motivational statements are actually de-motivating. phrases like "you better be sweating" and "you should be dying now" create a negative association with working out. antoinette: nothing says motivation like that. doug: you're dying. how about, you're doing a great job. antoinette: then you look at the skinny girls and you're like i can't compete. doug: a sports memorabilia

of our successful democracy but apparently often more preached than practiced in the commonwealth. you want to know where your tax dollars are spent and how government's business is conducted. journalists ask the questions and get answers for you, if they can. accessing public records, however, is a hit-or-miss prospect for journalists and citizens alike depending on who you ask. "5 investigates" mike beaudet, working in partnership with "the globe," enlisted the aid of northeastern university students to test massachusetts's response to public record requests. when asked by an average citizen-- in this case, a student at northeastern-- more than half of the commonwealth's 351 cities and towns failed to respond to requests as outlined by state law. nine police departments and six town halls outright denied requests for records, a clear violation of state law. when we ultimately identified ourselves as journalists, the apologies came and so did the records. but the open records law applies to the requests of all citizens. and frankly, quite often journalists all over boston have
8:25 am
requested records in a timely fashion or without incurring thousands of dollars in processing fees. governor baker and attorney general healy tell "5 investigates" they support government transparency, compliance with the law, and public record reform. perhaps the commonwealth should just put everything on line, dramatically increasing transparency, with far greater efficiency than the current requirements. in the meantime, since the old law isn't working nor enforced, the legislature needs to quickly pass a public records reform bill, one that is clear to all and enacted by all the
