6:00 am
>> now on newscenter 5's "eyeopener." antoinette: breaking overnight. no winner in last night's powerball drawing. the eyepopping jackpot that is now up for grabs. mike: and a stormy sunday on tap. heavy rain and strong winds, and the front that's following it. cold air! doug: and ice rescue in brockton. two children stuck in a frigid pond. what it took to get them out. >> you're watching wcvb, boston's news leader. good morning! this is newscenter 5's "eyeopener." doug: it's sunday, january 10. good morning, everybody. antoinette: and i'm antoinette antonio. apparently no one took home that grand prize with the power ball, but there was one ticket that was sold in boston that is worth a million bucks. not bad. doug: there was a time, mike wankum, when a million bucks was a big deal. not so much anymore. mike: chump change. sphwhowg need a quick grand.
6:01 am
mike: unbelievable that nobody got that. the statistics are favoring those big, big numbers. we have big numbers in the form of a wind. the wind will be very gusty today. high wind warnings out for both capes. inland we're looking at wind advisories. i think the winds will be really ramping up later on this morning and through the afternoon. also coming along with that wind is the rain. you can see the leading edge of it right now just pushing its way through new york city moving all the way to hartford right now. this is moving its way north ward very, very quickly. all wrapping around a low pressure system clear out over the ohio river valley. as it moves up, it starts to bring the southeastly wind in. that's why we're talking about the wind gusts so strong as you head toward late this morning. here's where the rain will be at 8:00 this morning. downpours out to our west. those downpours move eastward so i think this afternoon it is pretty much devoted to a washout across the area. it is going to be a very wet one and windy. it will be warm. you won't get a chance to enjoy it. you walk outside and it will be like a car wash. 5:00 we see the showers winding down. plenty of sunshine coming in for
6:02 am
sunshine we're talking about. today we get to enjoy the warmth. in fact these temperatures will pop up to near record highs. already seeing some 50's. a lot of us will be in 50's maybe flirting with 60. antoinette. antoinette: mike, thank you. breaking overnight. $1.3 billion. that is the new prize after no one won last night's powerball jackpot again. doug: that was billion-- with a "b." that's even bigger than the record $950 million prize that caused a frenzy of ticket sales across the country. one of those purchases-- here at the clarendon wine company in boston-- was lucky. the massachusetts state lottery says a customer there won a million dollars. not too shabby, but nothing close to the full jackpot. those winning numbers were 16-19-32-34-57 and powerball 13. you have to get all of them in again nobody picked those numbers. not even one of the 1,300 people
6:03 am
went in on a huge pool. no one was allowed to buy more than one ticket to keep things fair. but it was always a long shot. the odds of winning were about 1 in 292 million. the new billion dollar drawing is coming up on wednesday. we'll have the winning numbers on newscenter 5 at 11:00. antoinette: and we following more breaking news overnight. worcester police make an arrest in connection with a deadly hit and run. a man was struck and killed on a city street early yesterday morning. 21-year-old vincent green of west boylston is now in police custody. he is facing charges including leaving the scene of an accident and homicide by negligent operation. doug: this happened on main street. you can see both the cruiser and the other car have front end damage. police tell us the officer involved is all right and already out of the hospital. it's not clear if anybody else

antoinette: right now a boy has serious injuries after falling through thin ice. people nearby ran to help him and another boy who fell in the water behind a school in brockton. the eye's juli mcdonald has more for those kids. everybody was calling the fire calling the police. you know, he was still under. all the commotion. he's still under. juli: brockton neighbors describe the terrifying moments waiting for the second of two little boys to be pulled from an icy pond behind a school at plymouth and crescent streets. they said it all started as a dare while the young group was playing football nearby. >> one of them went on top of the ice and then the other one said, "if you go, i'll go." and then the nine-year-old fell in first and then the 12-year-old fell in. that's when my brother and my cousin went to go look for help. juli: one of the kids ran into traffic to stop an oncoming car for help. our partners at "the brockton enterprise" shared this photo with newscenter 5. the woman called 911. the man jumped into the icy water after the kids. >> the first individual who was like nine came out. he was fine. you know what i mean? a little bit shaken and blue in
6:05 am
a little bit of water coming out of his mouth and it was fine. juli: the neighbors said it wasn't until brockton firefighters arrived that the older of the two was rescued. they thought he was underwater 5-10 minutes longer. >> it was too cold so he had to come out. the other was still in. juli: there is a fire station just a block from here on crescent street. neighbors said when the firefighters did arrive, the rescue was amazing. unfortunately though there were several minutes when the friends of these boys were running door to door trying to get help and for someone to call 911. in brockton, juli mcdonald, wcvb, newscenter 5. antoinette: boston firefighters want to know what caused a three alarm fire in jamaica plain. the flames broke out at an apartment complex for the elderly on centre street. everyone inside was ordered to evacuate the four-story building. several streets in the area were also closed. one resident was taken to the hospital for evaluation. more than a dozen people have been displaced by the fire. doug: new this morning. an injured boston police officer

work. that's according to "the herald." it's reporting officer kurt stokinger is feeling better after being shot in the leg on friday in dorchester. the suspect, grant headley, will face charges tomorrow. police say he is a suspected drug dealer and was driving without a license when he was pulled over. that's when they say he got out and fired at stokinger. antoinette: the suspect in the ambush of a philadelphia police officer is now charged with attempted murder. edward archer is also charged with aggravated assault and is being held without bail. police say he ran toward officer jesse hartnett's patrol car last week while firing gunshots and even reached into the driver's side window. the officer was hit three times but survived. police say hartnett confessed saying he did it in the name of islam. >> i don't think he had anything to do with isis or the islamic state or anything like that. i think this was an impulsive act by somebody who wanted to make a mark for himself. antoinette: the attacked officer
6:07 am
authorities say he spent some time in egypt in 2013 but they are not calling this an act of terror. doug: a new york city police officer is also recovering after being shot early yesterday morning. it happened while that officer was responding to a fight at a party in the bronx. with a long criminal record shot the officer four times hitting the shooting happened just three hours after he was released from antoinette: commitment 2016 with new support for hillary clinton. today planned parenthood will formally endorse the democrat at a campaign event in manchester, new hampshire. it's the first time the nonprofit group has backed a candidate in a primary. that announcement follows some celebrity endorsements for clinton. soccer star abby wombach has been campaigning for clinton and joined her at event on friday. wombach says having a woman in the white house would change what young girls believe is possible. republican presidential

visiting the granite state. tomorrow morning he'll be at the castleton banquet and convention center in windham for a rally. the new hampshire primary is just less than a month away. doug: in fact, that first-in-the-nation primary is coming up on february 9. and that means many candidates are ramping up their campaign strategies. it goes without saying this final push is critical for presidential hopefuls. if you live in new hampshire and haven't yet crossed paths with a primary candidate, that's all about to change this month. >> we're going to find candidates literally bumping into each other. people are going to be able to find candidates in the local businesses, the big rallies, pretty much anywhere. doug: for opportunities candidates can't scoop up, expect surrogates to be rallying in their place and volunteers to be making that one-on-one connection. >> you'll see more volunteers in the state. you'll hear those volunteers making more phone calls. they'll be knocking on your doors so that part is going to ramp up. doug: plenty of voters still
6:09 am
so for the packed republican field, candidates will be working especially hard to distinguish themselves on issues that matter to granite staters. >> that's jobs and the economy. that's national security. that's probably the heroin epidemic. those are the kinds of things that the candidates have to talk about in order to make those final connections. doug: experts also say negative tv ads will start coming on strong funded primarily by candidates' super pacs. but it's getting people to the polls that matters the most especially for the republicans. >> in a campaign on the republican side where the difference between second and fifth could be a couple of thousand votes, getting out the vote matters. doug: after new hampshire's primary, the republican field is expected to narrow down. experts say candidates who come in sixth or below will likely drop out soon after. antoinette: the match is set. the patriots will host the kansas city chiefs next saturday in the afc divisional playoff game. and that is the result last night's ugly game between

here's the fourth quarter. this fumble gave the steelers new life after a surge from the bengals. jeremy hill loses the ball giving the steelers some hope on the heels of two bengals touchdowns. then personal fouls at the end range. here's the kick with just 14 seconds left. the steelers win, 18-16. a couple ugly games last night. doug: with the personal fouls you end up hurting yourself. antoinette: the "t" is looking to take cost-saving action. doug: the audit that's sparking a crackdown on spending and where the transit agency is looking to cut. and a domestic flight to denver ends up landing across the border. the safety concern that diverted the flight. antoinette: severe weather down south. the storm system that's causing all kinds of damage in the region. mike: a warm but stormy day. but winter is making a comeback. my timeline for our next blast of cold air. doug: and breaking overnight. you've still got a shot. no big winners in last night's
6:11 am
the jackpot now $1.3 billion. the cash option-- $806 million. antoinette: that's all? doug: there was a $1 million ticket sold in boston. we will have more on the blockbuster jackpot all morning long on air, online, and on our

dealing with storm damage this morning. heavy rain and wind made a mess in marshall county. one trailer home was destroyed; another came off its foundation. fortunately no one lived in either of those homes. no one was hurt. doug: in missouri there's snow to deal with. forecasters say there won't be accumulation from any additional flakes. but cold is on the way there. wind chills were expected to bring the temperatures down to the single digits. mike wankum joining us now. you were saying earlier that is the stuff sliding our way. antoinette: it won't look like that here. mike: tuesday night into wednesday morning there might-a little bit of snow but it won't accumulate to too much. all that coming down. we'll even have rumbles of thunder this afternoon. january, thunderstorms. out it. this tells you how unusual this weather pattern is. check out the visibility. as the wind picks up this afternoon, we'll see the it even later this morning. it's 44 degrees. there's an east-northeastly wind.
6:16 am
cam right now and kind of stuck in the gray drizzle out there. that wind will start to ramp up. really i think late morning. when you have a wind advisory going into effect at 9:00. late morning through the early afternoon. the two areas that will have the strongest winds will be cape ann especially near the shoreline. there's nothing blocking that wind at all. just comes roaring into gloucester. as you look down to the south outer cape especially. as you look down towards nantucket as well, you'll be seeing very strong wind gusts perhaps as much as 60 miles an hour right near the shoreline. where is this storm? there it is. it is moving fast. look at in three hours how fast it has moved its way up to the north. this thing is racing its way into our direction and along with it bringing the rain and the winds will start to ramp up as well. the leading edge of it now into the hartford and into the springfield area. what's going to happen today? let me show you the timeline. this is 9:00 this morning. we've already got temperatures in the upper 40's. a lot of 50's showing up. here are the downpours starting state. by the time we get to 11:00 or noon today beings we're going to
6:17 am
into the 50's perhaps even flirting with the 60-degree mark. these downpours will be moving across the area. as we head through the day, temperature just keeps going up. the warmest temperature i think will be about 3:00 or 4:00 in boston. it will be very close to a record high temperature. as we head towards 6:00 tonight we're wrapping up the rain but the temperatures are still warming up. this is a question a lot people would ask me. do we have to worry about ice tonight? no because as the rain ends and the wind is drying things out, the tells don't drop off that dramatically. they'll be in the 40's and 50's most of the night tonight. tomorrow morning we do drop freezing mark. i think at that point most of the water is either soaked in, dried up or gone away. or there. that in the morning. these temperatures tomorrow, look, they don't budge. they just stick pretty much into the 20's and 30's all day long. so it's going to be a cold one for us. here you can see that wind out of the southeast today. very strong. then as we get later on tonight it starts to flip around to a westerly direction. that ushers in the colder air coming in across the region.
6:18 am
our search-day forecast and show you what's going to happen. first off today about 56 degrees for a high temperature. that is a record high temperature in boston at 56. tomorrow as i mentioned the winds will be out there. and so even though we've got a temperature which says 36 degrees, with that kind of wind going on out there, i think it's going to foal more like the teens and 20's all day because of the wind chill index. then a chance of some snow in here. not on tuesday but tuesday night. alberta clipper comes zipping out of canada. doesn't have much moisture to work with but could put down snow or light mix as we head toward the evening and the overnight hours. a little bit of that may linger into wednesday morning. and a new shot of cold air comes in here for thursday and friday. we start to warm up a little bit as we head towards next weekend. no big storms this week. just that little bit of snow tuesday night. i think the thing you'll really notice is the wind and the cold will be with us most of the week. it will feel like it's a january forecast. doug and antoinette. antoinette: all right, mike, thank you. 6:18. other stories we're following right now on the eye. doug: the mbta is now launching
6:19 am
and procedures. that review is expected to take several weeks. it comes after the mbta revealed payroll data showing the agency paid out $75 million in overtime last year. that's up from $61 million the previous year. more than 1,500 "t" employees earned six figures last year, including overtime. antoinette: a threat forcing an emergency landing canada. the united airlines flight was supposed to land in denver yesterday. but a few hours after takeoff, the crew decided to divert the threatening message from one of the passengers. there's no word on what that message was. but a person was taken into custody. doug: immigration is under fire demonstrators conflicted with other protestors yesterday. people took to the streets yesterday out of anger over a series of robberies and sexual assaults on new year's eve. foreigners-- including some asylum seekers-- are being blamed for the crimes. more than one million immigrants

founding father? all you need is $4.9 million. doug: how is that in schillings? that will buy a palatial home that thomas jefferson would recognize. anthony: look familiar? thomas jefferson's monticello. the iconic 18th century home of our third president. but no, virginia, we are not in virginia anymore. this spectacular home is a replica in summers, connecticut. >> we're five miles from springfield. anthony: bill laplant heads up the team that built this historical recreation, the vision of s. presley blake, founder of the friendly's ice cream chain. >> it was such a fun project. anthony: this 10,000 square foot home is currently on the market for $4.9 million. >> it's an awful lot of house
6:21 am
i know it's still a big number, but mr. blake never built the house to make money. he knew he would lose money from the day he started. it was a passion. it wasn't driven by profit. anthony: the exterior is true to the original. but the interior makes concessions to modern taste. today's pampered home buyer, for example, might have some quibbles with jefferson's kitchen. >> the kitchen in the original monticello consisted of a fireplace down in the basement with a spit and, you know, some vessels where you could light a fire underneath the vessel. all the latest gadgets and gizmos. heat, light, sound and security, controllable by i-phone. state-of-the-art energy state-of-the-art energy efficiency and luxurious finishes throughout. >> this floor is all laser-cut marble.

but along with that, we get near record heat. tomorrow the cold comes in. high temperatures only into the mid 30's and then a chance for snow tuesday night. looking like very light stuff. the storm system is too fast and moving through here too quickly. it does reinforce the cold air for thursday. high only about 28 degrees. doug and antoinette. antoinette: mike, thank you. thousands of teenagers all over the world are taking on a major challenge. doug: they now have six weeks to build their own robot. high school students in manchester, new hampshire, are among the 75,000 kids participating in the competition. it's called "first" and it's supposed to get teenagers excited about science and engineering. the challenge-- to build a 120-pound robot-- was revealed yesterday. >> by the end of week six, my hair will be gone. >> we're also going to have a lot of failing. failing and redoing. doug: these are the people who will be running the world soon.
