way through the 50s breaking records. you know about the all time warmest december. look at january so far. it is over 5 degrees. it is above average. that's probably going to change some as we certainly will have some cold episodes coming up. here is the thing. when you get a warm surge like we did yesterday and the warmest occurred in the evening when we broke the record at 58, it was still 51 at midnight. even though it felt so cold, it won't go into the books as an above average day. this is pretty extraordinary. last year 10.6 inches of snow. we know. we lived through it. look at this year. we are under one inch. however the last winter season we were only at 4.7 even though we wound up up there. the average at this point would be 15 inches. we are way under average so far. speaking of snow there is a little system and it is a
5:48 pm
we do see an area of snow into southern michigan and northwest ohio. that's the area that is on our way and it could time for some of us for tomorrow evening's commute. and there will be a little sunshine for awhile over the southeastern mass of the cape. but over areas north and west it will be cloudy. and then the clouds will thicken up and it will be this time tomorrow roughly that the snow will be reaching boston. and it is also colder there. so the impact for the evening commute has a better chance of being a little more significant out around the worcester air and 495 than it does in boston. but nonetheless there will be snow in the air and it might be mixed with rain and the temperature may be above freezing in boston so it may not have the same impact. and it is not a big storm. by midnight we will be cleared up by wednesday morning. and then another cold shot comes in. this is one of our computer models.
5:49 pm
snow. and it is about an inch in worcester. and then one to two inches as you go to the north and west. by the way this storm will intensity when it gets to the gulf of maine. in my opinion giving anywhere from nothing to an inch and and around boston. and then as it intensities in the gulf of maine it allows the bigger snow amounts to be up across the area. this is great news for the northern ski country and southern new england. here are the temperatures for 20s and low 30s. we will drop back to the teens and low 20s and the reason by the way you saw the water temperature was 45 degrees here. that's why with the south, southeast wind it will be accumulating snow in boston. we are right back to the wind and the cold and the wind gusts coming up on wednesday. now thursday is also going to be a cold day around here as well and then we will moderate a little bit come friday.
5:50 pm
thing about the patriot game on saturday. look at this. it looks like a mix of precipitation and possibly significant during the morning and into the afternoon and weather after that. it might be ending for the game and might not be ending for the game. i am not completely sure. you can expect participation. it will turn colder in the course of the game. your health, cigarette smoking among kid is at an all-time low, but there must still be a risk from secondhand smoke. and now some new research says middle school and high school students are exposed to it on a regular basis. the cdc finds 48% of nonsmoking kids still report being exposed to secondhand smoke. one in six kids are exposed in school. one in seven exposed at home

"star wars" of course helping the total. one of my favorite characters. p speaking of "the force awakens" it topped the box office for a fourth week and adding another $41 million to its already record-breaking run. jc: you think about his career and the huge box office hits surprise. up next, a snowy surprise. phil: the nurses who brought winter to a little girl fighting for her life. >> and coming up at 6:00, the latest on the breaking news of a four-alarm fire. two people rush to the hospital after the flames broke out in this building. it is a home that doubles as a dentist's office. we are live at the scene. two arrests connected to what investigators are calling a sophisticated drug operation
