but it'll all move out soon. good morning. i'm emily riemer. randy: and i'm randy price with cindy fitzgibbon. still coming down at this hour. cindy: it is. if you have to get out on the roads in the next couple of hours, that will be the biggest challenge. the kids are off for the holiday. a fresh coating of snow they can play in. you see the most intense snow in the darker blue along the immediate coastline. things have tapered off, off to the west. a few more hours by 9:00 this morning i think the impact really starts to lessen. it will be out of here by lunchtime. that's for sure. we still do have a winter weather advisory until 10:00 now really from boston up to north eastern massachusetts. the rest of us going to see that snow get out of here a little bit before that. you can see how everything is kind of pivoting from west to east across the area so we have the snow coming down at a pretty good clip from danvers to swampscut. heaviest snow pushed east of the boston area. from weymouth, marshfield down to plymouth and bourne and

this one little intense burst from acton to sudbury. we still have the snow out there by 7:00 this morning steadier stuff is beginning to shift off shore. that's within the next hour. notice by 9:00 this morning, a lot of the snow is gone. so things will improve. 2-4 inches on average for most of us. but there have been higher totals south of boston. locally some spots up to about five inches of snow. we have an arctic front crossing the area this morning so it's in the 20's now but even with the sun coming out, lunchtime through the afternoon, temperatures hold in the 20's but winds pick up out of the west 15-25, gusting higher. single digits wind chills. the cold is incoming but we've got snow out there now. and trouble you say south of boston right now. olessa: we are watching one accident on 24 south of town. a live look at the expressway first. by the gas tank we're seeing a lot more of that blacktop. crews have been working hard to get that snow off the road but it's still slippery. be careful. to the maps now. here's the accident cindy just mentioned.

we do have one lane closed. be careful of that. just cleared an overturned vehicle 95 south. that one over by route 1. so once again an indication of how slick the ride is right now. eastbound on the pike not too bad. there is a 40 miles per hour speed restriction in effect from new york to the allston/brighton tolls. an accident on 495 southbound by 93. one lane is closed. going to stay stop-and-go not because we have the heavy volume since a lot of folks are off today but just because of that snow and not the most pleasant driving conditions this morning so be careful. trains and buses doing okay. randy, emily. emily: thank you. right now a hingham native is back home, finally free after being held in an iranian prison for weeks. randy: the eyeopener's doug meehan is live in hingham with his emotional return. doug: matthew trevithick spent 40 days in that notorious prison in iran. now he is back with his family. here in hinge hl, the people are pretty happy about that so say the least. this is our first look at trevithick as he arrived on u.s.

walked into logan airport was put his arms around his mother. university graduate was studying farsi in tehran. farsi is the native language. that's when he was abducted though the details remain unclear. trevithick's mother got the call just before 5:00 a.m. on saturday that he was free and coming home. we spoke to the family before he arrived at logan. >> we're overjoyed he's out. we're just enormously grateful to everybody in the government. doug: trevithick was released on the same day that four other americans were freed by the iranian government in a separately negotiated prisoner swap. state department officials say the tense talks to free him were so precarious that immediate family members couldn't even tell anyone he'd been detained. the prison where he was held has a reputation for brutality against political prisoners. but the conditions trevithick encountered are unclear. morning, doug meehan, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: three of the four other americans released by iran are

geneva. the fourth detainee chose to remain in iran. the state department says the americans will be checked out at a military hospital near ramstein air force base in germany before heading home. right now the state department is trying to find three american contractors missing in iraq. there are reports that they have been kidnapped. the arab news channel al-arabiya claims the americans were taken by militias in baghdad. the u.s. embassy says it's working with iraqi authorities to locate the missing workers. sanders: i think secretary clinton knows what she says is very disingenuous. randy: sharp clashes as the democrats go head to head for the last time before the iowa caucuses. this morning tension is clearly rising between hillary clinton and bernie sanders. the eyeopener's erika tarantal is here with the highlights. erika: two weeks from today voters will cast their votes in iowa so the stakes are high. clinton, sanders, and former maryland governor martin o'malley took the stage in south carolina last night.

and clinton was clear. early on, sanders took clinton to task for what he says is a mischaracterization of his position on gun control. clinton wasn't backing down. clinton: i have made it clear based on senator sanders' record that he has voted with n.r.a. with gun lobby numerous times. sanders: the gun manufacturer's liability bill had some good provisions. erika: candidates also discussed race relations, the economy, and the opioid epidemic. a new "wall street journal"/nbc news poll gives clinton a 25-point lead nationwide. that's up six percent since last month. emily: it is seeming less likely that the marathon bomber will face state charges for the murder of m.i.t. police officer sean collier. after dzhokhar tsarnaev was sentenced to death for the attacks, middlesex d.a. marian ryan vowed to immediately pursue charges in state court. but "the globe" reports she is now considering her options and

returned to massachusetts. new this morning. startling new numbers about how many youths are escaping state custody. "the globe" reports more than 270 have taken off from department of youth services facilities in the last four years. that includes 18-year-old alexander mills who is charged with killing a new bedford cab driver. he's one of nearly three dozen escapees accused of committing crimes. the less restrictive facilities allow juveniles to attend classes or hold jobs in the community as they're being rehabilitated. randy: seven minutes after 6:00. right now the search for answers waltham. a couple found dead inside their police are treating it as a murder-suicide. they were called to the home on forest street saturday night for a well-being check. property records list the owners neighbors tell newscenter 5 that they didn't know the couple well

close family. right now auburn police are looking for the vandals who went on a bb gun spree. the windows of 20 cars were shot out last saturday night into early sunday morning. it happened on rockland road, summer street, and boyce street. anyone with information is asked to call auburn police. emily: the patriots' road to the super bowl goes through denver. it's brady versus manning again after the broncos beat the steelers last night. the patriots hope the outcome of this sunday's afc championship will be different than the last time they faced the broncos. that was thanksgiving weekend. the same game where rob gronkowski sprained his knee and was carted off the field. julian edelman did not play in that game. the pats lost in overtime. broncos q.b. peyton manning, not showing too much emotion about the matchup just yet. manning: i try to stay kind of in the moment, try to stay one week at a time, try to be patient and not look too far ahead. emily: this will be the patriots fifth straight afc championship and the fifth time brady has taken on manning in a playoff

areas closest to the coastline are hanging on to the snow. you can see it right here on radar. darker blues cape ann all the way down to cape cod. you head inland and the snow has tapered off out through the worcester area. i give this another couple of hours. slick roads, reduced visibility through about 8:00 this morning and then thereafter it is shutting off. north eastern massachusetts hanging to the snow a little bit longer. a winter weather advisory up through 10:00 a.m. here. from danvers to lynne down to swamp scet this is where we have a pretty good burst of snow. that darker blue hugging the coast here. plymouth county as well all the way down to the cape. behind it, a little burst of snow moving from acton to wayland right now. that is going to continue to move eastward as well. behind it things really start to go quiet down. that's why i say in the next couple of hours this will all be shutting off. how much snow has fallen? a lot of us have between 2-4 inches of snow. south boston with three inches. lexington about an inch-and-a-half. westborough a couple of inches

south of boston a couple reports around rockland and hanover of four inches. idea. south of boston, a few spots when this winds down. you can see 7:00 this morning steadiest snow is off shore. still snow showers through about 9:00 this morning. and then we're pretty much done. the skies will brighten up this afternoon so it's about a two- to four-inch snowfall for most of us. just south of boston a few localized spots come inning close to five inches of snow. notice the temperature s are in the 20's right now but off to the west they are colder. it's 15 in syracuse. it is below zero back towards the great lakes. and this is an arctic air mass moving in behind our arctic front. once this front goes by, winds shift to go the west. we are picking up. wind speeds this afternoon 15-25 miles an hour holding those temperatures in the 20's all day long. even with the sun coming out. by the wind chill by noontime single digitses, teens. it will be near zero as we head toward this evening with overnight wind chills dropping down below zero in many areas.

these are your low temperatures. single digits, teens but again zero. that wind will be strong all day long. we have gusts for 50 miles per hour right through the day on tuesday so we've got the wind and the cold but it is sunshine here with moderating temperatures through the end of the week. notice friday night into saturday we are watching a storm that will be organizing to our south. coast. it has the potential to be a pretty big storm but right now the track is very, very critical what we get. this is all going by to our south. lots to watch in the next several days but the impact here is potentially for some winter weather here as we head to the first half of the weekend. olessa: we knew it was coming eventually. if it comes let it be on a weekend. cindy: this storm is easier to take. olessa: it looks like it's pushing out. the roads starting to look better. there's a live look outside. we can see that blacktop here. this is over on the eastbound side heading toward the bottom of the screen on the pike by allston/brighton.

restriction in respect from new york to right around this stretch here. things are starting to look a bit better. let's go to the maps. as far as accidents go not looking better just yet. we're watching a few. 24 south at route 44 there's a crash there. accident coming in just now blocking two lanes. 95 northbound by route 1. we cleared an earlier accident involving an overturned car right in that same spot on the southbound side of the roadway. this one just coming in now. another crash expressway north by adams street. so far the pike is not too bad. you just saw it live. still watching this crash clearing 495 south at 93. and then once again as you travel 95 this is northbound side of 128 right over by 95 in peabody. so far the trains and bus s are on schedule with the exception of the orange line where we are watching mine rm northbound delays for the orange line once again. randy. randy: thank you. a family dog is recovering at home this morning after an unprovoked attack. right now, police are searching for two men they say came into the family's yard in rutland and beat the dog.

family. their dog abbie was attacked saturday morning and suffered serious head injuries. a family member heard abbie barking and chased the men away. >> i just can't imagine that anybody would do anything to a dog, come into my yard, and hurt her. if they did this to my dog, you know, whose dog is next? randy: abbie is now out of the hospital but still needs pain medication and special care. emily: boston-based fantasy sports site draftkings is pulling back on advertisements. the company was one of t.v.'s biggest advertisers during the opening weeks of the nfl season. draftkings says it wanted to become a household name. the site plans to invest elsewhere this year. they hope to open up contests in the united kingdom next month. new this morning. with the temperatures dropping, those heating bills are rising. but there are a few ways to cut costs. first, cover up those wall-mounted air conditioners.

future prognosis is worse and governor baker has openly predicted the tragic toll will spike further unless these chilling statistics spark a dramatic change in how we handle this epidemic. this week the house unanimously approved a bill that, among many recommendations, limits initial painkiller prescriptions to a week's supply and recommends cities and towns set up "prescription drug drop boxes" where medications can be safely discarded. the house bill differs significantly from the governor's recent stronger proposal, which limits initial prescriptions to three days, and lets doctors commit patients involuntarily to drug treatment facilities for up to 72 hours if they're considered in immediate danger. the senate passed its own version of a bill last fall, ostensibly focused on curbing addiction through education and prevention-- a start, but not enough. frankly, the strongest elements of all three proposals now need to be reconciled and melded into an aggressive plan of action. partisan politics rules the federal government, but

down as that snow tapers off. you can see we've had reports of close to five inches now. this coming in around acushnet. there. just got a new report in from hopkinton of four inches of snow. about three in westborough. you get the idea. snow has been falling. winter weather advisory up through 10:00 this morning. massachusetts. essex county you can see heavier snow bands east of poe booed owe heading toward gloucester now. outside of this area, you can see the heaviest of the snow pushing off shore right now. one last little burst moving through metro west. by 7:0 this morning, so an hour from now, a lot of it is winding down. we'll see patchy snow showers persisting through 9:00 a.m. and it is over. it's a two- to four-inch snowfall for most of us. localized spots south of boston closer to the five-inch mark for sure. an arctic front is pressing through this morning. the temperatures starting out in the 20's hold in the 20's with the sunny merging throughout day. those winds will make it feel like it's in the single digits and teens lunchtime right toward the afternoon. so wind on the way.

incident, they didn't feel comfortable walking here especially late at night. >> i'm out no later maybe than 6:00 or 7:00. at 9:00-9:30 it gets kind of wild around here. kelley: the victim drove herself to the hospital where police say she was treated for serious injuries. police have stepped up patrols in the area as they search for those three suspects. live at the chelsea police kelly tuthill, wcvb, newscenter emily: right now the search for missing in hawaii is entering day four. corporal christopher orlando was on one of two military helicopters that collided last week. the search is being slowed down by rough seas. orlando's family is thanking everyone who is praying for randy: we could know this week when aaron hernandez will face his next murder trial. a new date is expected to be set during a hearing tomorrow. the former patriots' star is

2012. jury selection was scheduled to begin this month, but the judge agreed to delay the trial because of an appeal over evidence. hernandez is already serving life in prison for the 2013 murder of odin lloyd. new this morning. boston mayor marty walsh could face protests when he gives his state of the city address tomorrow. the eye's frank holland is here to explain. frank: randy, the issue is education. it is expected to be a big part of the mayor's address. the question is will it satisfy frustrated parents? some say they plan to protest budget cuts to city schools at tomorrow night's event at symphony hall. according to excerpts from the speech released to "the globe," mayor walsh will appeal to the public to recommit to helping every child in boston succeed. but these are the numbers that concern some parents. at least $20 million will be cut from the school budget this year. parents claim that will have a serious impact on special education services. but school officials say the cuts will also include new

that's one of the highest totals. with five inches of snow there native or over. concord close to four. arlington 3.5. new bedford close to three inches. acushnet not too far away close to five. hanover four. definitely localized over achieving a little bit. hopkinton 4 inches of snow. you get the idea. the snow still coming down here. you can see that band right around the gloucester area now. another one crossing over 128. so from around the needham area down to westwood close inning on the boston area that's really the last gasp with this storm. you can see that's generally the back edge here as everything continues to pivot on off shore. that will be the trend over the next couple of hours. most of us walk away between 2-4 inches. some localized higher ales south of boston. it appears up toward cape ann as well. you can see here on future cast by 8:00 this morning, most of the steadier snow is off shore. can't rule out a passing snow shower through about 9:00 this morning. but thereafter we're getting into some sunshine. you can see this arctic front coming through this morning. much colder air off to our west. it's below zero back toward the
