storm, the nation's capital getting the brunt of it under a blizzard warning right now bracing for more than two >> you're watching wcvb, boston's news leader. good morning! this is newscenter 5's "eyeopener." antoinette: just after 6:00 a.m. we take a live look at pits right now from new york city on the left-hand side of your screen and then from baltimore on the right-hand side. the blizzard of 2016 really pounding the mid atlantic this morning. good morning and thank you so much for joining us. i'm antoinette antonio. doug: i'm doug meehan. it's saturday, january 23. from the deep south up into new jersey, it's a mess out there this morning and the storm is headed our way. antoinette: we have team coverage this morning. both cindy and danielle are here tracking the storm. and our frank holland is live at logan where hundreds of flights are cancelled. but we begin with cindy. the question is, how is this going to impact us? cindy: we've told you all week long we're going to ride the

that is still what is happening this morning. as expected pounding right now with snow and wind around new york city all the way back to d.c. where they've already had a foot of snow. that snow is still coming down. here locally we have winter storm warnings up for southeastern massachusetts and a blizzard warning up here for martha's vineyard. this goes until the overnight hours. as you get closer up toward boston, there will be some snow south of the pike with the winter weather advisory here. here's the thing. take a look at the radar right now. looks like it is snowing across it is not. you can see how we go from white to the darker blue. visibility still near 10 miles in bridgeport connecticut and white plains have dropped to a mile so it takes a while for us to overcome this dry air and moisten up the atmosphere enough to get the snow to come down. it is this band right here, this darker blue color is really the leading edge of the snow. over the past couple of hours notice how it's not really moved north ward. it will be a very slow process to get that snow in here today. much of your saturday around the boston area is dry.

may start to get snow on in here. you can see south of boston by noontime we're start to go bring that snow into the south coast, cape and the islands but it will be until 2:00 or 3:00 before it comes up close to the pike. look what happens as we go into this evening. that snow is creeping up toward the north shore. areas north and west of massachusetts, the boston area. notice here across the route 2 corridor, that snow may never come down and get you t amounts will be heaviest here in southeastern massachusetts. this will race away very quickly tomorrow morning. in terms of how much snow anywhere from nothing to a pike. once you get from the pike on south ward, the amounts ramp up 2-5 inches. once you get into the south shore around the plymouth area 5-10 inches of snow before you the cape. we'll talk much more about the winds in just a few min issments antoinette and doug. antoinette: cindy, thank you. the massive storm has turned deadly. it's being blamed for nine deaths on the roads around the mid-atlantic. doug: thousands of flights cancelled.

no one hurt there. live at logan. domino effect as travelers are forced to re-book. frank: well, the first major snowstorm of 2016 create ago nightmare for people with plans to travel on land and of course by the air. here at logan dozens if not hundreds of patriots fans dressed in jerseys and other gear would have been here but instead very quiet this morning. that storm having a ripple effect at airports across the the ripple effect already hitting logan airport. over 150 cancellations. pats' fans, mark thomas and his fliers' equivalent of a hail >> mark thomas: all the flights were booked. we were lucky to get on, and me and my daughter here are going to the patriots game on sunday. we are going to watch brady and the patriots hopefully beat manning and the broncos. frank: train travel also affected. amtrak is operating on modified schedules in the north east corridor. amtrak sent out an alert late

no service south of washington, d.c., this weekend in virginia and the southeast. not many people stuck or stranded here. massport is crediting the airlines with dramatically improved their communiation with passengers. we've seen a similar trend at airports all across the country. live here at logan, frank holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. antoinette: frank, thank you. the travel backlog-- high winds and heavy snow. we see that in baltimore. doug: danielle is tracking what's happening in the mid-atlantic right now. danielle: they're getting hammered. here's a look at some of the hardest hit areas. washington, d.c., looks like a ghost town. people are hunkering down at home until the storm passes. city crews are out plowing and shoveling, preparing for an entire day of snow. one of the biggest concerns-- the wind. this could lead to power outages. and if d.c. picks up over 20 inches of snow, it would be the first time in 94 years. obviously this one going to go

throughout the region. virginia state police say they've responded to nearly a thousand crashes and almost 800 disabled vehicles by last night. high winds could cause trees and powerlines to come down. and check out the conditions in bardstown, kentucky. the snow has been coming down there since yesterday. kentucky is one of 10 states that is currently under a state of emergency. i'll tell you about the impacts that this storm could have to up. antoinette: danielle, thank you. south coast communities preparing for whatever the storm brings. community maintenance director of fall river says the city is ready. last weekend's snowfall prompting a test run. >> load up on salt. we've got 2,000 tons. the equipment has been checked out. everything is ready to go on the city's side. pedro amaral: in the winter we depend on the snow. if we don't have no snow, we don't make no money. antoinette: local residents also know the drill. they're already stocked up on rock salt and other storm-

doug: welcome back, everybody. oh, we've got ourselves a nasty morning down there in d.c. all is quiet on the roadways because when these snow storms roll into the mid atlantic states it's crippling. they just do not have the infrastructure to handle the amount of snow they're getting down there. we're keeping an eye on it. when i say "we," i mean cindy and danielle. 169 flights canceled out of logan. more than 4500 cancellations at airports across the country. 10 governors have declared a state of emergency. an official with the national weather service says the storm could easily cause more than $1 billion in damage. antoinette: a grateful somerville couple reunited with their stolen dogs. they were taken when the couple's apartment was broken

maryland as well. they've already had a foot, a foot-and-a-half of snow. i'm seeing reports in a lot of these areas. it is still snowing hard. and this is where they're going to walk away. with feet of snow. danielle has been talking all morning how they're chasing that record for their greatest snowfall ever in the washington d.c. area. the potential there for about two feet of snow. so that is where the storm is hitting hardest. we still have the blizzard warnings here from new york, philly, d.c. we're in it too at least part of the area. and that is around martha's vineyard where we have a blizzard warning through the overnight hours just after midnight. the worst of the winds and the snow are going to shut off. we do have a winter storm warning along coastal southeastern massachusetts through 7:00 tomorrow morning. if you are in this area in blue here, you have a winter weather advisory through about 7:00 tomorrow morning as well. here is the snow right now. it looks like it is snowing in connecticut but it is not. it is not reaching the ground just yet. you can see the visibility around bridgeport is nine miles. might be a couple flurries falling. that's it. you get into the heavier snow around white plains with the visibility a mile and it gets

it is this band this darker blue band that stretches across long island. this is the storm edge. this is what we are watching. you know it's going to take all morning and early afternoon before that starts to lift into our area. the air is very dry here locally. dew points in the single numbers. we have this wind coming in off the water which will moisten things up in southeastern massachusetts but high pressure to our north is really going to try and hold some of that dry air strong. it will take much of the day before this starts to get in here. after about 2:00 this afternoon in the boston area, that is when the snow will start to come on in. notice here along the south coast by noontime, we are in it. creeping up towards providence. snowing pretty good here down along buzzards bay and the cape and the islands. lit take until about 3:00 before that reaches up through the south shore closer to boston. and by about 8:00 this evening, this is where that back edge that is going to get north of the pike will do so. it will snow for about a four-hour window through about midnight or so. and that's when we are going to see after midnight the snow start to retreat and it exits

in terms of how much snow, not looking for much here north of the pike. there could be up to a couple of inches but then the amounts ramp up quickly. 2-5 here just south of boston. the two is closer to boston. the five is as you go south. once you get from providence over to plymouth on south ward, that's where five inches goes down to ten by the time you get to the south coast, the cape and the islands. the concern down this way is it's not just snow. there's going to be wind. that may lead to some concerns with power outages. we talk more about the winds and the coastal impacts now. danielle. danielle: that's right, sinned ear, we are concerned with power outages especially, as you said, because the heaviest snow is going to come down to the cape and the islands on the south coast. that will be heavy, wet snow. as it combine s with the very strong winds and we could see wind gusts in excess of 50 miles per hour, yes, there is that potential for tree limbs to come as. we're going to watch that very carefully. 40-mile-per-hour wind gusts if you live along the south shore and essex county is included in

county because you're under a wind advisory. we do have the high wind warning for the cape and nantucket. the vineyard still under that blizzard warning. expecting wind gusts in excess of 50 pirp. it will be a pretty windy afternoon tonight into first thing tomorrow morning. the other thing that these winds are going going to do, they're going to pile up the water. we're watching the high tides at 11:00 p.m. and at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. that's why that coastal flood watch is in effect mainly south of boston. south shore, the cape and nantucket is the greatest concern. so here is why. let's talk about this actually because we're going to watch this system. as it gets closer to us, those winds really start to ramp up. those winds will really push out of the north and eve. we also have a full moon which means those tides are astronomically high. that's why we're concerned with the coastal flooding. there is also that potential for some beach erosion so please be aware of that. if you live along the coastline. we do start to dry things out by sunday afternoon. and then we start to warm up. upper 30's by monday. mid 40's by tuesday.

showers but obviously they'll new brunswick the form of some rain. antoinette and doug. antoinette: danielle, thawng. it's 6:19. checking more top stories happening right now. doug: police are investigating a deadly school shooting in western canada. four people are dead and two critically wounded in the worst mass shooting to hit the country in years. the shooting happened in two locations-- a high school and a home in an aboriginal community in the province of saskatchewan. canadian police captured the suspect outside the school. no word on the suspect's age or antoinette: gunfire on the las vegas strip. police are investigating an officer-involved shooting near the bellagio hotel. you can see this cell phone camera capturing that commotion there. investigators closed the area to traffic for several hours. the shots may have been fired during the fountain shows just after 7:00 last night. police say they have a suspect in custody. it's unclear if anyone was hurt. doug: the c.e.o. of the state's only slot parlor is defending its financial performance. in a letter to the mass gaming

complained that media coverage has been, quote, "overly negative." revenues have been dropping every month since the slot parlor opened over the summer. penn national gaming says the decline is not unexpected after a robust opening, adding that plainridge park has the highest average revenue among the company's 27 gambling locations. changes coming to the oscars. antoinette: the motion picture academy taking new steps to become more diverse. the academy is pledging to double the number of women and minority members by 2020. the announcement comes among harsh criticism of the oscars following two years of all-white nominees in the lead actor categories. the week-long criticism comes with calls to boycott the oscars. will smith, jada pinkett smith, and spike lee have pledged to not attend the awards show. >> it's a systematic bias that needs to be addressd across the industry.

danielle: welcome back. i'm meteorologist danielle vollmar. we are tracking snow heading in our direction. right now all this you're seeing on radar not actually making it to the ground because our air is so dry. i do want to point out that the winds are starting to gust to 30 miles an hour on nantucket and to 28 miles an hour now on cape cod. begin to go see the winds starting to ramp up. they are going to continue to ramp up as they head through the afternoon and into this evening and really blow anywhere from 30-40 miles per hour sustained. guffs to near 50 if not above i think on cape cod. notice the starts for you folks as early as about lunchtime, i think, on the cape, the south coast and the islands but it will take a little longer for boston to see it.

and places north and west may not see anything at all especially you folks in new hampshire. northern mass a low chance. really a medium chance in the boston metro area. you go south of boston, the cape and the islands and that's where the storm impacts are the greatest and the snow totals are the greatest. you can see anywhere 5-10 inches of snow fro prf dense down to plymouth down to the south over to cape cod as well as the vineyard. nantucket, of course, less the farther north and west you go. antoinette and doug. antoinette: danielle, thank you. the patriots are in denver this morning. doug: and members of patriots nation sent them on their way yesterday after a rally at the kraft center ymca in foxborough. fans packed the pro shop loading up on key supplies, but one fan had a special delivery. joanne hensas-- also known as the cookie mama-- has been dropping off cookies for the players every week. for the past six years she's delivered 16 dozen cookies to the team. >> are these cookies sprinkled with a bit of luck?

boston's news leader. this is newscenter 5's "eyeopener." doug: good morning and happy i'm doug meehan. antoinette: and i'm antoinette antonio. we have both cindy and dal p danielle here this morning. doug: oh, boy. antoinette: i feel like this storm you guys have been tracking all week is almost too good to be true for us. not that i don't believe you. cindy: after last winter, i'm just saying. doug: it is a break. cindy: absolutely this storm is hitting the mid atlantic states much harder than it will here. we are going to feel the impact. that's why danielle and i are here tracking it for you. they're measuring the snow in feet to our south. already about a poot of snow on the ground around d.c. reports as high as over 15-16 inches in maryland. that's where the snow will be greatest but it's not just the snow with this system. it is the winds. that's why there's a blizzard warning up for this area as well. some of those winds, some of that snow is going to come up through southern parts of southern new england as well. you can see the storm centers right about here right now.

wrapping ahead of it. the leading edge is just lying right here really taking its time to kind of shift on north ward. it will be a slow process getting in here today. but areas south of boston, coastal parts of southeastern massachusetts are under that winter storm warning through tomorrow morning and it is a blizzard warning for you on martha's vineyard where that wind and the snow are going to reduce the visibility for at least three hours to under a quarter after mile or less. that criteria will be met. if you're watching from this area in bluish-purple here you'll get deep sent snow. winter weather advisory for you. it is is areas south of boston that will be most impacted. the radar right now looks like we have snow ongoing throughout much of connecticut. most of this is not reaching the ground. you can see maybe a couple of flurries in parts ever danbury where the visibility is close to 10 miles. suddenly the visibility drops. storm. intense bands of snow. you can see this blue line right here back through long island. this is the one that is going to today. as that does, we'll start to see

as well. winds right now starting to pick up. it's that wind coming in off the water that will allow things to moisten on up. around the boston area it will be after 2:00 this afternoon before we start to see any snow in here. you can see that here on future cast during the morning hours by about lunchtime. the snow is only making it about as far north as the south coast, the cape and the islands maybe up to providence. it will be mid afternoon, 3:00 or so before it starts to pivot up closer to boston. then during the evening hours if you have plans this evening in eastern massachusetts all the way up through the north shore, there will likely be some snow fall inning this area but this is about the far northern and western extent of the snow. during the overnight hours it had start to push on out. it's gone by about 7:00 or 8:00 tomorrow morning. in terms of how much to expect, the least amounts north of the pike. the amounts ramp up 5-10 inches of snow down on the south coast and the cape. let's get you updated on some of the other impacts locally and of course regionally, danielle. danielle: that's right, cindy. what is going on, just heard

and baltimore. that snow is coming down at a good clip. you can see it. all across the mid atlantic states. as for what they can expect there, well, we do have blizzard warnings in effect for d.c., baltimore to philadelphia. the jersey coastline, of course, encompassed in this. long island. that blizzard warning goes up to the connecticut coastline too and of course includes our folks here on the vineyard. now in terms of why it's a blizzard warning, these winds will start to gust. notice by 1:00 we have wind gusts on nantucket at 55 miles per hour but atlantic city experiencing 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts. now we go forward into time. that system gets closer to us. those winds really ramp you. we could see wind gusts maybe, i think it's a little high, but near 70 miles per hour potentially on nantucket. that's close to hurricane force winds just so you folks know. these winds will back down as we head through day of sunday in talking. the mid atlantic is the bull's eye. and baltimore. antoinette and doug. antoinette: danielle, thank you. a brutal winter storm is

in north carolina, scottie shelton says this is the worst he's seen in his five years running a snow plow. so many motorists caught in this situation. or worse. along the jersey shore, residents warned that they haven't faced anything this bad since hurricane sandy. this giant sand dune, nearly a mile and a half long and 12 feet tall, was created to protect these homes. still some have been taking advantage of the fresh-fallen snow to have a little fun. in fort campbell, kentucky, even snowzilla had to shovel the driveway. frank: again 160 chances here at logan and delays. train service has been been affected as well. amtrak has canceled all service south of washington d.c. this weekend. live at logan, frank holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. doug: thank you. get the latest storm team 5

welcome back. this is a storm we have been tracking for you. it's being blamed now for nine deaths in four states-- virginia, north carolina, tennessee and kentucky. 169 flights out of logan airport canceled today according to flight aware dot-com. more than 4500 cancellations at airports all across the country. ten governors have declared a state of emergency. an official with the national weather service says the storm could easily cause more than $1 billion in damage. doug: environmentalists turning high tech in sandwich using a drone to look at the beach it was just rebuilt at a cost of

now, they hope it holds. members of the u.s. geological survey setting up equipment at town neck beach in sandwich. they want to measure the effects of the storm on erosion. mark galkowski-town natural resources: this is sand that wasn't here a year ago. it wasn't here three months ago so this sand has been placed into the system. it will erode in time. chris sherwood: i don't think we're going to lose very much of it in a storm of this magnitude, but it's going to get moved around a little bit. and in the long run, we'd like doug: astronomically high tides predicted for late today and tomorrow. this will be a concern all around the coast. high winds. i saw you mentioned almost hurricane force winds out there. danielle: very strong winds. we're watching the coast at least on my end. antoinette: i'm talking snow. cindy: daniel is talking wind. the winds will ramp up today. the winds are not that strong notice the direction they're coming from. they're coming in off the water. that's the difference. this will be cumulative.

actually tomorrow morning's high tide that we're going to have greater impact even though the winds won't be quite as strong at that point. but the winds are ramping up and when is it going to snow? look where the snow is right now. as far south as georgia and south carolina. this is the southern extent of the storm. the meat of the storm is right here from new york city all the way down to d.c. where they're going to be measuring this one in feet as we have been telling you. we are going to ride the northern edge of this storm. and that is where we are going to see most impacted south of boston here in south eastern most massachusetts right along the coast. we have the winter storm warnings up through the night until tomorrow morning and on martha's vineyard that wind combined with the snow likely going to prompt some blizzard conditions. that's why we have a blizzard warning from. also south of boston, away from the coastline, the winds won't be as much of an issue but there will be some snow. that's where we do have a winter weather advisory up as well. where is the snow right now?

it looks like it's snowing across connecticut. not yet at least across most of connecticut. we might have flurries happening from bridge all right po danbury very light light snow. the visibility is still close to 10 miles. once you get south the visibility drops very quickly. down to near zero. this is where we have a band of very heavy snow. so this is what is happening. we have the very heavy snow band that is just slowly lifting north ward. it's running into very dry air. over the past three hours, that line has barely moved. the distance is about 30 miles in three hours. so it is going to take all day before the snow starts to get in here. the air so dry right now with dew points in the single digits as that storm tries to lift in, it's running into the dryer air. for us locally it will be the afternoon hours, i would say after 2:00 before we get any snow in the boston area. you can see the timeline here by noontime that snow is still down along the south coast, the cape and the islands. and very slowly by about 3:00 this afternoon, it is pivoting toward boston. if you have dinner plans this evening, there will be some snow

from boston to worcester up through the north shore, but i think this is about the northern reach of where the snow gets. look what happens as we go toward about midnight. it stays in this same area. so it will be a four-hour window or a six-hour window from 6:00 tonight until midnight where it snows pretty good. that snow overnight is going to push out pretty quickly. tomorrow morning. in terms of how much snow we likely will see a couple of inches just north of boston up through the north shore. once you get south of the city we go from around two inches in boston to up to five and down from plymouth to providence it's about five inches raching up to more than 10 possibly down along the south coast, the cape and martha's vineyard as well. so we have the snow. let's talk more now about the winds and the coval concerns. for that we send things on over to danielle. danielle: that's right. wewe are talking about those winds that will be ramping up. we already have wind gusts at about 39 miles per hour now on block island. we're starting to see the winds ramp up especially the farther south you are. the system is getting closer to

as it gets closer, those winds will start to houle. let me show you this is. it's 10:30 in the morning. you see what's happening. these winds are gusting in excess of about 40 miles an hour on nantucket. 44 miles an hour on block island. now once we get towards, say, 6:00 or so, wind gusts all the way up to 40 miles per hour as far north as boston. even lawrence seeing 36-mile-per-hour wind gusts and it continues through midnight and into the overnight hours. we could see these wind gusts in excess of 60 miles an hour. with that heavy wet snow especially farther south and east you go, that can pull down tree limbs and power lines and cause power outages. we're watching that very carefully. these winds finally back down through the day of sunday. then we'll see start to see a lot more sunshine. that wind going to pile up that water. because of that, we have this coastal flood watch in effect for the south shore, the cape and nantucket. watching two high tides. i think the greatest concern is actually tomorrow morning at 11:00 but also the one at 11:00 p.m. we'll watch from plymouth to

prices. instead of carve-outs for exceptions to residency requirements, perhaps the mandate should only apply to department heads and other key positions. when candidates are of equal strength, city residency could-- and perhaps should-- be the tiebreaker. the city of boston is world class in many respects and aspires to be even greater. eliminating the residency requirement altogether ensures that the quality of those employees who serve the city
