>> now on newscenter 5's "eyeopener." danielle: the snow is winding down but there are still concerns along the coast. the changes happening over the next few hours. antoinette: and fears over flooding. the anxious wait for the next high tide. doug: and we are live in denver as the pats prepare to take on the broncos for the afc championship. >> you're watching wcvb, boston's news leader. good morning! this is newscenter 5's "eyeopener." antoinette: and a good morning to you. thank you so much for joining us. 5:00 on this sunday, january 24. i'm antoinette antonio. doug: and i'm doug meehan. the storm moving off the coast but there are still concerns out there this morning. we have live team coverage. look at 'em all. we're going to begin with team
5:01 am
danielle, take it away. all yours. danielle: we do have snow still ongoing at this hour. you can see especially for you folks along the cape and the islands, but everybody else mess. we picked up quite a bit of snow depending on where you live. now on the cape and east falmouth picking up 15.3 inches of snow. on the vineyard about 15 inches of snow and still snowing for you folks there. so you may add a little bit more to this number. as far as in plymouth, about 8.5 inches of snow. in boston this is at about midnight 6.1 inches of snow. it got as far north as tops field seeing three inches of snow there. we do still have the winter storm warning for our coastal communities along the south coast as well as the south coast of even parts of southeastern mass and the islands. that is until 7:00 this morning because, of course, we're still seeing snow bands ongoing right now. you can see heavier snow bands there. the visibilities have improved
5:02 am
just to be aware of that. this is going to quickly clear out of here as high pressure builds on in. so we should see some sunshine later today. that could help in the melting process. here that future cast. by 8:00 it's long gone. by 2:00 we're starting to clear out those clouds. you see more clouds as we head through the later half of the afternoon but notice here's your planner. we're starting out at 18 degrees in the boston area but feeling more like the single digits. that's because the winds are still pretty strong at least through the morning hours. we will see a lot more sunshine as we head through the afternoon. you notice these wind gusts still pretty impressive. mike will talk about those concerns along the coast. antoinette and doug. doug: danielle, thank you. on the south shore they're dealing with the snow and watching the next high tide. in marshfield, they've made changes this year to try and avoid serious problems. antoinette: the eyeopener's frank holland is live near the seawall there with conditions at
5:03 am
frank: winds are gusting at 35 miles per hour and eight inches of snow fell in marshfield. we have not under a coastal flood warning here. marshfield an area that has seen serious storm damage before. residents keeping a wary eye on the new sea wall here. with the wind whipping the waves high, the tide testing its worth. impressive but nothing like the storm surge that knocked out 80 feet of the the sea wall last winter. last year residents saw their homes condemned-- the most damage done by the waves surging >> after last winter, what marshfield went through, this is probably nothing. frank: last night's storm did have ferocious winds knocking out power to 1,100 eversource customers in marshfield at one point. it'll be the high tide at 11:00 this morning that will prove to be the true test. residents do expect this sea wall to hold, but they definitely expect some street flooding too.
5:04 am
holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. antoinette: exactly what frank was talking about. and the tide is the next concern as this storm pulls away. doug: mike wankum is watching conditions all along the coast very closely. mike: as frank mentioned, this will not be comparable to what we saw last year. we do have a few things we're keeping an eye on this morning. one is along the coast we're talking about this. we have a coastal flood warning. it really goes mostly through the cape. as you look down towards the islands. you'll notice we just really have an advisory as you look along the south shore. once you cross the canal from plymouth through skit yailt all the way up to newburyport, we're talking about an advisory at this point. the time is between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00. that's when we have our highest tide coming back in. just to give you a comparison. this is the way it looked in sandwich. we had 11-foot high tide. today we have 12.5. you have another foot-and-a-half on top of it. yes but the sungar at 2.3, waves only 7-10 feet. that's going to keep us in this minor to moderate category. the high tide today, areas we'll watch the most will be sandwich, scituate and also nantucket
5:05 am
where we could see some of the minor to moderate coastal flooding that will be taking place. antoinette and doug. antoinette: mike, thank you. as far as the snow goes, the cape really getting the brunt of this storm but right now we want to move on and tell you about a man recovering after being hit by a smoa plow in yarmouth. doug: this video in overnight from the scene on myrtle lane. police say the victim was walking along the round around 9:00 when he was hit. he was not seriously injured but was taken to cape cod hospital to be checked out. travel this morning is still tricky as crews work to clear the roads. antoinette: what we're going to do right now is go on to cape cod. and a.j. burnett is standing by live where that area, a.j., really got the brunt of this storm as far as our local snowfall goes. a.j.: as far as the local snowfall is concern it's difficult to measure. you come out just in back of me here and you've got exposed sand on the beach here. but you go just a few feet away
5:06 am
have very large drifts as well. it's been the wind that's been the story down here since we got here about just a half an hour ago. that wind, of course, is a concern now that it's shifted into the north for the high tide coming up later on this afternoon. we had near blizzard conditions here in sandwich last night. much of the cape has been battling intense winds, as you can tell right now, and the drifting snow. but many people we talked to were not too upset after last winter locals are saying it will take a lot to impress them. but what was concerning was the high tide. that storm hitting just days after a major project was depleted to help with years of erosion. >> we're wary about the sand. it seems less sand every year. >> i think most of it will wash away. you predict mother nature.
5:07 am
a.j.: of course the town spent $3 million on a project to shore up years of erosion during the past decade or so. all that work will be put to the test today as those winds continue howling out here. we have a high tide coming up around midday. in sandwich, meteorologist a.j. burnett, newscenter 5. antoinette: being looing cold out there. a.j., thank you for that. this morning the patriots are getting ready to lay it all on the line for another trip the super bowl. doug: and a big part of this will be an epic battle between of the best quarterbacks in the game. our bob halloran is live in denver this morning with a look at a rivalry for the ages. i say "ages" with just not a number in mind. bob: that's right. a couple of old quarterbacks as well. you're absolutely right. this is really a team game, but a big part of this story is the tom brady/peyton manning rivalry and which one of these guys is headed back to the super bowl. 16 times they've gone head to head-- brady 11-and-5 in those
5:08 am
heading into this game patriots' fans have got to like the numbers when it comes to the braid eep manning rivalry. yes, manning's regular season stats give him the lead in yards, touchdowns, completion percentage, and nfl mvp's-- 5 compared to brady's 2. but the regular season doesn't matter quite so much. but this is the postseason, and the math is all about number 12. brady has more touchdowns, fewer interceptions, higher completion. oh, and four super bowl rings. brady: i think playing someone 17 times is pretty cool especially someone as great as him, to play against, you know, those peyton manning-led teams you know we have to play 60 minutes. you're going to be in for a tough game. you know, they're going to take advantage of opportunities that they get. >> all i can say about tom brady is that he plays the position the way it's supposed to be
5:09 am
he's extremely talented. he's a very hard worker. very competitive guy. he just plays his position the right way. bob: and here's a little fun fact for you. 108 different players have caught a regular-season touchdown pass from either brady or manning, but wes welker is the only guy to grab a t.d. pass from both as mentioned, brady dominates the regular season match-ups against peyton, but they're 2-and-2 against each other in the playoffs. today we get the tiebreaker. we'll see how that one plays out. reporting live from inside mile-high stadium, bob halloran, newscenter 5. antoinette: bob halloran up early. 3:00 a.m. denver time. doug: they didn't even flick the lights on at the stadium. all right, bob, thank you. a potential campaign shakeup. new york considering an independent run.

the race. and a new plan for city hall plaza. the idea that may brighten up the area. danielle: the concerns along the coast. the wait for the next high tide and what the rest of us can expect for the end of the weekend. doug: let's get back outside. a live look at downtown boston. it's cleared out in boston but not everywhere. take it easy if you have to get out early this morning. the roads are in pretty good shape, too. t this is called non-24. learn more by calling 844-824-2424.

it's 5:13. welcome back. as that storm leaves the area, we are taking a live look at sandwich right now. that area as far as massachusetts goes really getting the brunt of this storm. about a foot of snow on the cape. we of course are tracking the storm as it exits. both mike and danielle are here. we'll have their forecast in just a couple of minutes. doug: on to commitment 2016 now. and there could be a late entry in the race for the white house. billionaire media mogul michael bloomberg is reportedly considering an independent presidential run. the former new york city mayor has been a republican and a democrat and an independent during his political career. new hampshire g.o.p. chair

democratic nominee. >> i think what we're seeing is the result of a very, very weak field of candidates on the democratic side. michael bloomberg is seeing the same thing that the rest of america is seeing. clinton's lack of honesty with the american people has critically damaged her campaign. he sees an opportunity here. doug: bloomberg is expected to make his decision by the end of march. marco rubio and hillary clinton picking up key endorsements at a critical time. "the des moines register" threw its support to the two candidates yesterday. the move comes just over a week before voters make their pick in the iowa caucuses. antoinette: right now crews are still working to clean up and clear roads in the washington, d.c., area. look at how bad it was hit. the blizzard brought the nation's capital to a standstill. highways shut down. businesses closed. at least 18 deaths are attributed to the storm. doug: they're cleaning up after a huge helping of snow in new york city. central park checking in with more than two feet.

ban trying to keep people off the roads. antoinette: those who got drones over the holiday season are using the season's first snow storm to put them to use. take a look at this video of the snow fall in virginia. some areas there got more than a foot of snow. you can see snow-covered cars and quiet roads-- all from the bird's eye view of the drone. doug: you know what's interesting. the number of people we can jam in. we'll tell you how bad the storm is. mike: many, many years ago there were seven of us jammed in here. danielle: there's only two of us today. we're finally wrapping the situation up. we still have a tide to watch which we're going to talk about in a second. first i want to talk about that snow though because it was really impressive. look at these totals.
5:16 am
that sharp cut-off. yes, there was a sharp cut-off. folks in new hampshire are saying where is the snow? as you look, you have about 1-3 inches just north and west of boston. once you get into the boston area, you ramped up to about six inches but just north and west even as you followed the mass pike it was anywhere from 3-6 inches of snow. and then the farther south you go, you get into about 6-10 inch range. the cape and the islands getting the brunt of this storm with about 10-15 inches of snow. some spots even above that. believe it or not, it was blizzard criteria. it was an official blizzard in some locations which means it was about a quarter mile visibility for at least three hours in a row and wind gusts in excess of about 35 miles an hour. now where was the official blizzard? it was on nantucket for about four hours yesterday. in chatham four hours yesterday. the vineyard, two. and plymouth. you can see it was really a dangerous situation. right now things are beginning to wind down but we still have
5:17 am
effect until 7:00 this morning. especially for your coastal communities along the south shore, the cape as well as the islands. you can see why. we still have some snow ongoing. most of us still have plows around. you notice that that cloud shield is start to go clear the farther north tan west you go once you get into vermont. here is that snow right now, that falling i want to show you. notice it's really from hyannis out to sea, wellfleet, nantucket picking it up. the vineyard too seeing it. you might pick up a couple of additional inches of snow. maybe not additional inches but about an inch maybe in some locations many it's beginning to wind down as this area of low pressure really pulls away. high pressure will build in for today which means eventually we're going to kick out these clouds. it is going to take its time though. i think the clouds take a little longer, but that snow should be done by 8:00 this morning. you can go about your day today. it will be actually a nice day. a good day and a lot of sunshine so it will be a melting day for sure as we head through the afternoon. in terms of the temperatures though, it feels like the single digits out there this morning.
5:18 am
kids want to play in the snow. as we go through the day, the temperatures going to warm up into the lower 30's. those are your highs, as you can see, with some sunshine but the one thing i'm pointing out, too, is we do have pretty strong winds. we are watching those high tides especially down along cape cod where you're under that coastal flood warning until 2:00 p.m. today. remember that high tide is is coming at 11:00 a.m. the reason why we're seeing these really big high tides is because they're astronomically high but also because of those winds. we talk more about the winds, here's mike. mike: those winds were howling yesterday especially if you were over the cape. let me show you some of the wind gusts we're talking about. these were close to hurricane strength in some spots. block island, for example, 75-mile-an-hour winds. nantucket, oh, we had several reports on the island of 70-mile-an-hour or plus. marshfield 70 miles an hour. wellfleet 59. rockport up on cape ann, 55-mile-an-hour wind gusts. what's going to be happening with the winds? as we advance down the road today, it look like we'll be seeing the winds which are very gusty right now. nantucket is is gusty to 45
5:19 am
we'll see those winds dmin inning off but it's a slow process as we head through the day today. you'll see by 11:00, the time of high tide good news here. the winds will be north-northwesterly direction for most of us that's good news. northeastly direction pushes it right at the coast. in this case it's pushing it away. that's why the tide this afternoon is not going to be as bad as it could be and certainly year. by the time we get to 4:30 this afternoon, notice what happens. inning off. as we look down the road here's the way it shapes up over the next seven days. sunshine. 32 degrees for high temperature. monday 37 and dry and sunshine. tuesday we have some showers but check out the temperatures. they'll be in the upper 40's good melting taking place. we'll start to cool things down a little bit as we head towards the end of the week with temperature back in the 30's. overall the week ahead outside of tuesday it will be on the dry side and temperatures averaging above normal for this time of year. something to look forward to. antoinette and doug. doug: mike, thank you. some of the roads still tricky
5:20 am
antoinette: "eyeopener"'s jorge quiroga is live for us in the south end this morning. jorge. jorge: a rare appearance on the "eyeopener" for me. hello, guys. we're here in the south end. the city is waking up slowly. this is what they're waking up to, the folks here. i think the timing on the anniversary (audio cutting in and out) big blizzard of 2015. we get hit by the real first storm of the season but certainly this is by far not crippling (no audio) as i said, it will be) no audio). antoinette: we're in and out of that picture right there. what we saw from jorge's shot is that roads did not look too bad. maybe walking along those sidewalks could be tricky this morning so you want to be careful. it is now 56789. 20. a check of what's happening right now. doug: a 17-year-old is now facing murder charges in canada for a deadly school shooting. four people were killed; seven others were wounded. it was the worst mass shooting to hit that country in years.
5:21 am
friday. antoinette: a close call for a family in eaton, new hampshire, when an s.u.v. veered off the road crashing right into their mobile home. police say the driver lost control and crossed the center line. fortunately the people inside were sleeping on the other end of the home and were not hurt. the driver and four children in the s.u.v. were also fine, but she is facing multiple charges. doug: city hall plaza is about to get much brighter. boston is in search of bids for a contract to install l.e.d. lights at city hall, much like the ones on the zakim bridge and the pru. mayor marty walsh says he hopes to create a welcoming and lively atmosphere, and the new lights will make the plaza safer. the lights are expected to be installed during the summer. antoinette: on the road to the super bowl. tom brady at the top of his game as he gears up for yet another championship game. doug: but how does the q.b. get ready for the playoffs with three kids and a wife at home? kind of like all of us. i don't know. our bob halloran is back with

family. bob? bob: you're right about that, doug. he's just a regular person outside of gillette stadium and in this case mile high stadium. there have certainly been bumps in the road this season for tb12 and his supermodel wife gisele bundchen. you may recall the couple put up with plenty of reports that their marriage was on the rocks over the deflategate saga. the father of three, considered one of the best quarterbacks of all time, put to the test under incredible stress and pressure from the league. but the patriots are now back in another afc championship game under his leadership. brady telling reporters family is a big part of his life. it's about a lot of give-and-take, and getting to this point in the game takes a lot of support. so how does being a dad change his preparation for the big game? brady: it's a lot different. our daughter is not sleeping at night. you're up. you know, it's just part of being a parent, you know,
5:23 am
yeah, there's a lot less time to recover if you miss nights of sleep. bob: brady adding that his kids are getting older now, and he's had a few years to get into a routine, and he's also been to this afc championship game five years in a row. reporting from my hiel stadium, bob halloran, newscenter 5. antoinette: i think it's also their organic diet. here's a mini member of patriots nation. little natalia from lynn pretty in her patriots' pink. she's looking good for today's afc showdown. upload your fan photos and videos to the ulocal section of wcvb.com. if you don't have to plow it or shovel it, a big snowfall can be a lot of fun. doug: the big fan at the national zoo. why he may be one of the few washingtonians enjoying the

danielle: welcome back. i'm meteorologist danielle vollmar. tracking some snow finally pushing off although still affecting cape cod as well as the vineyard and nantucket. you can see visibilities down to just under two miles so still pretty moderate snow falling at this hour. otherwise, everybody else is in the clear.
5:26 am
you can see there were some storm reports of some trees down last night especially in the marshfield area and obviously on cape cod where those wind gusts, as mike was mentioning, are very strong. right now still pretty strong on cape cod and nantucket at 45 miles per hour. but as we go through the next 12 hours in time, notice in the boston area, those winds are going to die down through the afternoon. we are going to see a lot more sunshine. antoinette and doug. antoinette: we look forward to that, danielle. thank you. the nation's capital is getting pounded with snow, but we found some residents are loving it. doug: one resident in particular was having the time of his life. the national zoo tweeting yesterday "tian tian woke up to a lot of snow, and he was pretty excited about it." you can see him rolling around as happy as a kid on christmas morning. the zoo reminding us that giant pandas have thick fur coats, perfect for keeping them warm. antoinette: you know what? why not? doug: that was fun. this is not so fun.

danielle: as he mentioned the storm is moving out. the areas that got the most snow and what you can expect for the rest of your weekend. doug: and "t" workers shoveling out. the early effort to keep the trains moving. antoinette: and the patriots are looking to run over the broncos on the road to the super bowl. the rivalry and what's different this time. >> you're watching wcvb, boston's news leader. good morning! this is newscenter 5's "eyeopener." doug: good morning, everybody. it's 5:30 on a sunday morning. don't be fooled by that slight wave happening there. it's kind of nasty in some spots especially down on the cape this morning. but we all made it. antoinette: we did. doug: good morning. i'm doug meehan. antoinette: and i'm antoinette antonio. we have danielle and mike both in this morning. you saw a.j. burnett out there in sandwich who has the other crews around, frank in marshfield because this storm, you know, we got a lot of snow on the cape. doug: the cape was really. mike: i mean the wind down there and everything else going on. danielle: it was a nasty storm
5:31 am
antoinette: some folks got nothing at all. new hampshire is sit ing there saying what happened. danielle: what storms? those snow totals were pretty big on the cape especially eastbound. picking up over 15 inches of snow. guess what. for you folks right now, it's still snowing there. so just to be aware of that or it might be winding down at this moment. on the vineyard, about 15 inches of snow so far. plymouth picking up about 8.5 inches of snow. even in boston this was official at midnight at 6.1 inches. may have picked up a tenth of an inch in addition and then topsfield seeing about three inches. it all depends on where you live how much snow you saw. the farther south and east you go, the more snow you saw. and we still see snow right now. because of that, there's still that winter storm warning in effect until 7:00 this morning. you can see why. we do have a band that's been slowly progressing but still affecting parts of cape cod as well as the islands. it has brought down visibilities although they're starting to settle in and improve down to about three miles now in
5:32 am
so still some moderate snow could be falling in some of those locations. as we go through the day and future cast is showing you by 8:00 the snow is done but you may hang on to some clouds a little bit longer especially for you folks in southeastern mass. everybody else starting to clear out. by lunchtime, i think we will see in sunshine. could see a couple of additional clouds later this afternoon but other than that, not so bad. however, we do still have some wind out there. mike will be back to talk about that. that's creating a wind chill. so it feels more like the single digits out there this morning. if you're headed out to lay in that snow make sure you bundle up the kiddos. we'll see a lot of sunshine and that should help in the melting process. there are concerns at the coast. mike will be back to talk about that. antoinette. antoinette: danielle, thank you. right now it's a double whammy on cape cod. whipping winds churning up the ocean overnight. but that area also got pounded with snow racking up some serious totals. doug: two for one down there this morning. stormteam 5 meteorologist a.j. burnett is live in sandwich with
5:33 am
they don't look good. a.j.: no, dougie, they certainly don't. it's awfully windy down there. the snow has come to an end. it's still drifting as the wind continues howling down here. look over my right shoulder here. you can see where we're standing. we're here at the board walk in sandwich. behind me up that hill and down the hill on the other side is cape cod bay. now most of the shoreline from massachusetts does not need to necessarily worry about this mid-day high tide coming up. however, with the wind come inning out of the north and northwest for later on during the midday high tide, that puts areas like this here in sandwich , this area, under the gun for maybe some coastal flooding going on. of course, this area just spent $3 million, the town of sandwich did, to rebuild part of the beach here as part of a huge project after a decade or more of erosion that was ongoing. they've taken the sand from cape cod canal and replaced a lot of the sand here at the beach. that certainly will be put to
5:34 am
mid-day high tide which comes in at just after 11:00. we'll keep our eyes on it for you. meteorologist a.j. burnett, here in sandwich, wcvb, newscenter 5. antoinette: a.j., thank you for and from coastal concerns in sandwich, we head further north to similar worries in marshfield. holland is monitoring conditions there. good morning, frank. frank: good morning. well, here the winds are coming from the north. they're gusting at about 35 miles per hour. also eight inches of snow fell overnight. we are not under a coastal marshfield. but residents are still very concerned about the new sea wall here. overnight, fast-whipping winds and high waves already testing this new barrier's worth. the conditions were impressive, but still it's nothing compared to the storm sturnlg that knocked out 80 feet of the sea wall last winter. it will be high tide at 11:00 this morning. that will be the true test of this new sea wall. residents and town officials are expecting this new sea wall to hold, but they're still also
5:35 am
street flooding. live in marshfield this morning, frank holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. antoinette: fraj, thank you. and as we've been saying, it is the next high tide we'll be watching very carefully. doug: mike wankum is keeping a close eye on the entire coastline. mike: the wind direction is critical. if you have a northeastly wind that builds over several days, that's when you hear about the damage from revere and scituate. this wind is gearing down to the north and eventually toward the northwest. that is the whole key to it on why this storm system doesn't have an opportunity to crank up and do the damage that it's potentially out there. gusts. they are impressive. down towards the cape nantucket still gusting to 45 miles per hour right now. as you look to the south shore, you're still looking at wind gusts around marshfield of 32. yesterday you had a wind gust of 70 miles per hour there. as we head up to the north shore, wind gusts are running about 20-25 miles per hour. so not a big problem for us. they are more of a northerly direction which means they're coast. so the issue we have is really when you have a northerly wind like that which by the way will
5:36 am
through the afternoon, with the northerly wind it kind of pushes it right into the bay there. that's why where a.j. was in sandwich we're watching this. a coastal flood warning this morning around the time of high tide. high tide coming in at 11:00 this morning. it pushes the water pairl parallel toward the coast. in sandwich and easton it catches that in there. that's why there is beach erosion going on. there will be possibilities of minor flooding but not as big as he issue on what we saw last year in many many of those storms. antoinette and doug. antoinette: mike, thank you. mbta crews out last night making sure access to trolleys and subway cars is safe. this was at the fairbanks stop along the green line in brookline. shovel teams clearing snow and putting down sand as the trains moved in and out. no reports of any problems with "t" service. doug: new bedford, like much of the south coast, picking up over six inches of snow. city officials say they learned some tough lessons last year and they were ready for this winter's first real test. the city declared a full snow emergency, encouraging people to

has been the site of many horrors for the patriots throughout the years. they seem to struggle out here. as a matter of fact, the game two months ago is one of the reasons we're here again today. if the patriots were able to win in november here in denver, this game would be being played at foxborough, at gillette stadium. yeah, that is a wound that is is denver pulled off an overtime win in that november matchup. but some things are notably different this time around. the pats were playing hurt. without edelman and amendola. and gronk and dont'a hightower left the game early with injuries. but don't forget manning wasn't at center for the broncos that time. he sure will be tonight and gronk will be on the lookout for low hits. gronk: just part of the game. we're not doing anything out there. it's just part of the game. just got to be aware of it. maybe just got to step up my game a little bit.

down the east cove. i want to show you this because it was actually the number-one storm that fell in the baltimore airport. 289.2 inches of snow fell there. in d.c. 29.3. number two. philadelphia was only at number 6 but they still picked up 20.8 inches of snow. new york city getting close to number one. we have to see that. in central park had 25.8 inches of snow. they need 25.9 to tie that all-time record. now closer to home we picked up quite a bit of snow too. down there. picking up about 15.3 inches of snow in east falmouth on the vineyard about 13.3. nantucket picking up 11.5. the farther north you go along the south shore, still 8.5 inches of snow in plymouth. in rockland though only four inches of snow. not very far and you start to see that sharp cut-off. once we get towards, say, boston this was 2.8. that was earlier in the time period. inches.

all around the boston area, you can see the differences between anywhere from 3-7 inches of snow in south boston. you get farther to the north and you're at about one inch of snow in north reading. some spots. along the cape cod area as well as nantucket and the vineyard, but eventually it will pull off. it should do so in the next hour or two. then we'll see high pressure build in which means we should kick out these clouds too. and see more sunshine as we head through the afternoon. that sunshine should help to melt that snow especially the farther south and east you go. so once we get towards 2:00, notice we're clearing the clouds out of here. it will be a mostly sunny day. it's going to be a cold day though. you notice that the temperatures starting out in the teens. but we are warming up into the lower 30's today. but again we have a lot of wind out there. so this morning, it's feeling more like the single digits in most locations. so if you're headed out the door right now, make sure you bundle up. impressive right now. they were actually more impressive earlier with the

talk more about that wind and how it's kicking up that coastline. here's mike. mike: we've been watching it, of course. it's always an issue. whenever these nor'easters move their way through, we have to keep a close eye on what's happening. let me tell you about what's going to be happening as we head through the afternoon. as you look down to the south right now what we're dealing with is a coastal flood warning. this is for the cape and the islands. now the big issue that we have going on this morning is the wind is out of the north. not the northeast. so a northeast wind would drive it into the coast, say, from, oh, really from the canal all the way up to the north shore but because that wind is going to be running more parallel to the coast that's the reason we only have a coastal flood advisory up along the coast. it's really toward the cape that we do have that warning taking place. what are we talking about here? here are the times of high tide. generally 11:00, 11:15 this morning. do be careful. a lot of like to go to the beach and see what the wave look like. this is an opportunity to stay away from it a bit. what kind of weather can you expect over the next seven days?
5:47 am
we head for tomorrow and it's 37. get the idea. we're going on start melting things off. by the time we get to tuesday we have rain coming into the forecast. look at that. temperatures into the upper 40's. so the roadways will look nice toward the end of the week as we melt a lot of that off and we get those sunshine days coming back in especially as we head towards wednesday, thursday and friday of next week. antoinette and doug. antoinette: sounds good, mike, thank you. time right now is 5:49. stories we're following right now. doug: at least 63 people, including children, were killed in air strikes in eastern syria russian warplanes. the raids near the city of deir al-zor yesterday were among a two days, killing scores of russian jets have been bombing the area as syrian pro-government forces clash with isis fighters. antoinette: the water crisis in flint, michigan, has prompted a go-fund-me donation pages. the money will go toward things like purchasing bottles of water, ater filters, and even bags of fresh fruit and vegetables. the town's water became contaminated with too much lead when its water source was

both teams so close to their dream of heading back to the super bowl. for tom brady it would put him in position to win his record fifth super bowl ring, and for manning, he could become the only quarterback to lead two different franchises to a super bowl win. that would be something for him as well. as you know here at mile high stadium both these quarterbacks have been around for a long time. in fact, look how long in the tooth these guys are. the combined ages of brady and manning in days is 28,603. that makes them the oldest pair of starting quarterbacks in a playoff game by about 900 days over john elway and dan marino back in 1998. of course, manning looks like he's at the end of the road while brady says he wants to play at least another five years. who knows. he might be able to do it. from mile high stadium, bob halloran, newscenter 5. antoinette: you have to admit tom brady is looking great out there.

danielle: welcome back. i'm meteorologist danielle vollmar. as we look at local live radar, you can see the last of the snow finally pushing off but still impacting parts of the cape and the islands this morning. also notice we do have current wind gusts up to 31 miles an hour now. as you can see on the cape cod area. now as we go through the day today, we are going to see those winds die down although yesterday's winds were pretty impressive. you can see on block island these hurricane-force winds out there. and as we go through the next 12 hours in time you notice those winds backing off in boston down to about 11 miles an hour by lunchtime. and you also notice we're going to see sunshine. one thing we are watching for sure, of course, is high tide which is coming at 11:00 a.m. this morning. coastal flood warning now for cape cod.

while washington d.c. may not be used to getting a blizzard, one place that is used to it is buffalo, new york. one restaurant making light of the situation with this sign that read, "if buffalo got two feet of snow, it would be called tuesday." true. that's true. the snow bringing out a hometown hero yesterday. antoinette: spotted again. the boston yeti making his return to face the brutal weather. look at him there. the infamous character tweeting out this photo of him holding a shovel, as he was, quote, "experiencing some real deja vu!" he first showed up roaming the snow-covered streets of boston during last year's record-breaking blizzard. he may not need so much of that for this time around. not quite as bad. doug: we had the godzilla shoveling the driveway. tomorrow. antoinette: new plans to brighten up city hall plaza. leaders hope will make a big difference. antoinette: and a live look from sandwich.
