here going into february. it won't look so bad as temperatures this morning are starting in the mid 30's on nantucket. the low 30's on the cape. low 30's in boston. but still in the interior, you're waking up to temperatures really in the 20's. now you might see some wind out there today or at least feel the wind. we have wind gusts in excess of about 25 miles an hour out in western mass. that is creating a bit of a wind chill. so if you are stepping outside the door right now, 24 degrees is what it feels like in boston. but it feels more like 11 degrees in worcester. as we go through the next 12 hours here's what's going to happen. we'll warm up. we'll see full sunshine through lunchtime or so and then the clouds increase through the afternoon. we are warming up into the upper 30's and low 40's for highs depending on where you live. you can see this 40 degrees through the merrimack valley. 40 in boston. also 40 on nantucket. but big changes are coming. we'll talk about when we could see the 50's in the seven-day forecast ahead.

antoinette: danielle, thank you. right now, dozens of suspected vulnerable teens locked behind bars. federal agents and police unleashing a sweeping crackdown on the ms-13 gang. violent recruitment methods on the eye's frank holland with the arrests and some relief for neighborhoods terrorized by the gang. antoinette. ms-13 is a notorious international street gang and its membership has been growing. investigators say gang members recruited students as young as 14 from area high schools in chelsea, everett, and east boston. police say gang violence cut wilson martinez's life short. the 15-year-old stabbed the day before school started last year. with at least five murders tied to the gang, the arrests bring relief but not a rescue from the violence so many here fear. >> probably fewer chances for

down. the sparks flew in. i hit the brakes and ducked. everything in this truck is metal. i just stayed exactly where i am. juli: forced to sit tight until eversource arrived to turn off the power. newscenter 5 watched crews carefully treat the wires before they began to pull them away from the truck. another eversource truck eventually arrived with a new pole, but neighbors knew it would be a while until their lights came back on. neighbor: one of the officers said it would be at least overnight. juli: smith said he's trained to always be on the lookout for low wires, but it is hard to see them the dark. driver: when you're on a street they're not supposed to be that low, so you don't expect that to happen. juli: smith said the height of his truck is 13 feet and wires are supposed to be 15 feet high. another issue that made this even more complicated is that there were still wet concrete in the back of that truck so even once the wires came down and were tangled around it, that drum kept rolling the whole time.

5:12 am
look at this. sunday near 50 degrees. and by monday the mid 50's. we are on the way up. our average high temperature this time of year should be around 36 degrees. if you remember back last year, the month of february was one of the coldest on record. so at least we're not starting out that way. this time around. in terms of the month of january, we're running about two degrees above average. actually closer to three degrees. today we're going to be above average again i think hitting a high around 40 degrees. you can see why. we are starting out this morning in the 20's in worcester and springfield, low 30's though through the merrimack valley. and even the mid 30's right now on nantucket. so a milder start out there. you're going to feel a little bit of a wind out there through the afternoon. anywhere from 10-15, but it is out of the south and west. so that's a warming wind. also as you look, we will see full sunshine, i think, through about midday. then more clouds are going to work their way in through the afternoon. so we'll call it partly sunny. the winds turning from the north
5:13 am
south and west through the afternoon. and these are your day-time highs. upper 30's in worcester. low 40's nashua. also low 40's on the cape as well as the islands. right now what's happening. we have pretty much high pressure in control of our weather. so that's keeping us dry. we are watching one system up to the north here. it's a little bit of a clipper system but that energy i think is going to stay farther north. it could trickle in some clouds again through the afternoon but we're not talking about anything in terms of precipitation. then we're watching this system out to the west. this is going to bring us a couple of hit-or-miss showers as we head towards monday. we'll talk more about that one in just a second. for tonight, we're going to drop back into the 20's and 30's mostly cloudy skies. and then tomorrow we do it all over again but look at these high temperatures. mid to upper 40's to even low 50's depending on where you live so starting the month of february, it's going to be a warm one to start. the rain chances in the forecast come on monday.
5:14 am
just hit-or-miss showers we're looking for. notice on wednesday that rain chance goes way up. that's associated with our next system which is a pretty potent one. it will bring a lot of severe weather to parts of south eastern united states. let's talk about that one on tuesday. actually tuesday is also ground hog day just so you know. here is this area of low pressure and warm frontal boundary. it will also bring in very mild air. the rain starts up late morning on wednesday through the afternoon. we are looking for heavy rain and maybe a few even thunderstorms with this one. and there is that potential for some flooding because you know we have a lot of snow. this will definitely melt the snow but it's coming down at flooding potential from it. of rain? rain totals look like this through the day. anywhere a half an inch to about an inch in some locations. that is some significant rain coming through on wednesday. don't be alarmed if you hear a couple of rumbles of thunder. as we head towards the end of

>> this is an editorial by wcvb-tv channel 5 president and general manager bill fine. bill fine: this month we have been treated to starkly contrasting examples of divided government-- a bipartisan love-fest-- illustrated by the state of the city and state of the commonwealth addresses, and a polarized and awkward state of the union. is it any wonder americans question the effectiveness of federal government while local optimism abounds? major blue chip companies like general electric have picked up on the palpable bay state enthusiasm. mayor marty walsh and governor charlie baker enumerated their accomplishments, and cooperation crystalized by baker's account that he couldn't see an "inch of daylight" between boston's democratic mayor and massachusetts republican governor. to tackle our long remaining to-do list, they'll need to nurture their relationship and perhaps bring the legislature along on their dates. in particular, the governor laid out a lengthy agenda aggressively fighting the opioid epidemic; reforming department

high pressure dominates our weather today giving us a lot of sunshine and keeping us dry at least to start. we're watching this clipper system. it's going to bring us some clouds this afternoon but precipitation stays well to the north. it's this system here that could give us a chance for some rain beginning on monday. now the temperatures, as you look across the states, really start to warm up when you get back to st. louis at 46. little rock at 54. all that warm air is headed in our direction. so right now we're starting at 32 degrees. the winds are out of the west at about nine. and that makes it feel more like 24. so we do have a little bit of a wind chill out there this morning. and those winds will be breezy today. anywhere from 10-15 miles per hour. and notice we're going to bring in more clouds through the afternoon. so we'll call it mostly sunny, turning partly to mostly cloudy later this afternoon. 39 degrees in worcester. 40 in boston.

so it's a mild day overall. overnight lows tonight dropping back into the 20's and 30's. still keeping the wind with us. but the winds tomorrow out of the south and west the entire day. and that could warm our temperatures up into the mid to upper 40's. maybe pushing 50 degrees in some spots especially the south shore, i think, and potentially the cape. even up along the north shore, you could see as warm as 50 degrees in lawrence. so again we're dry again on sunday, too. here comes our next system though. by sunday night, we're starting to see some clouds roll in. they will be low-level clouds. i do think there could be some fog and some dense fog sunday night into monday morning as mild air moves its way in for your monday morning. and then as we head through the afternoon we're really going to warm up. we're also going to see a shower or two touched off from this cold front. once this cold front comes through, it will back temperatures down just a touch as we head towards tuesday. we're still pretty mild for this time of year. on monday though, we could be close to record high temperatures.
