new look this morning. the bold style choice, ahead. good morning, i'm emily riemer. randy: and i'm randy price with cindy fitzgibbon. a lot of our folks here are watching on facebook live. great to have all of you with us this morning. monday morning. it's going to be unusual weather for this time of year. cindy: a pop quiz. what month is it today? emily: it appears to be may. cindy: it is incredible. average low temperature for boston on may 1 is 45 degrees. that's where we are waking up to this morning. it really is incredible. typically this time of year our high temperatures average in the mid 30's but it will be another very warm day. 46 now in boston. we are 48 in marshfield. you can see mid 40's on the cape, the north shore. you head inland and worcester is in the lower 40's. a little bit colder nashua, fitchburg, orange all running close to the freezing mark this morning. so for the kids at the bus stop this morning, maybe a light jacket with most bus stops in the 40's this morning. burroughsy, warm. they're getting off the bus this afternoon. i don't think any of them will be wearing those jackets.

clouds though. not a perfectly sunny day by any stretch. i think more clouds than sunshine but partly sunny skies. cold front here off to the west. a ribbon of showers preceding this front likely going to fall apart and run out of gas before it gets here. i'm not expecting widespread showers but the clouds do increase by 4:00. notice we're 50 degrees in boston. by 10:00 this morning, jumping into the upper 50's this afternoon with maybe a spot shower toward this evening down on the south coast and the cape. look at that. taunton making a run towards 60 degrees this afternoon. i don't quite think we're getting to records today. 50's, records are in the 60's but a warm start to the month indeed. it's busy start out there on a monday morning. kevin brennan in for olessa stepanova this morning. kevin: getting there, that's for sure. the traffic picking up just about wherever you go especially braintree to boston. close to 30 minutes at this time of the morning. let's go to the maps though. a little bit further south, you can see the delays on the expressway. 93 northbound, delays out of randolph get to go the expressway.

24 backing towards harrison boulevard in avon. now up to the north 495 southbound we've got a crash reported at 93. i'm not seeing any back-ups yet. 93 south slow through 495 down into the wilmington stretch. again getting down by 128. 128 southbound so far so good from lynnefield down to lexington. take you about 19 minutes at this time. if you're taking the trains all lines are running on time including the mbta commuter rail and the subway lines. randy. randy: kevin, thank you. this morning all eyes are on iowa. in just hours the first votes will be cast in this contentious race for the white house. emily: the eyeopener's erika tarantal is here with what to watch today. erika: there will certainly be a final flurry of activity from the candidates-- all hoping to secure those critical first votes of this election. caucuses aren't like primaries. iowa voters must attend public meetings in their communities to cast their votes. democrats have to cast their vote in public. republicans use a "secret ballot"-- either a printed sheet or a scrap of paper. the caucuses get underway at

p.m. our time. campaign volunteers come from all over the country for the final push. ann sheahn came from chicago. >> this is my first time. i'm really excited to be here. i'm very energized. i feel like there's a great energy here so i'm happy to be with the campaign. erika: polls show a tight race between hillary clinton and bernie sanders going into tonight's caucuses. donald trump is still out in front on the republican side, all that matters is counting those votes. emily: our phil lipof will be in iowa as the votes are tallied. look for his live reports tonight starting at 4:30 p.m. after the votes come in at 11:00 p.m. and tomorrow morning on the eyeopener. meantime one candidate is pinning his hopes to the next voting state. republican john kach was in new hampshire all weekend, and he'll keep campaigning there today. he's hoping a strong showing there will keep his campaign going. the new hampshire primary is a week from tomorrow. randy: right now a young child

police are trying to figure out what happened. all of this unfolding on alpine street in the city's roxbury neighborhood. the eyeopener's kelley tuthill is there with what we know at this hour. kelley: randy, a police officer has remained here at the scene overnight. authorities continue to investigate exactly what happened here last night. we can tell you police received a call around 9:40 reporting a trauma victim on alpine street. a three-year-old child was taken from the home by ambulance to boston medical center. boston police are not releasing any details about exactly what happened. unfortunately we do not know how the child doing this morning. reporting live in roxbury, i'm kelley tuthill, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: breaking overnight. a woman is seriously hurt after being struck by a car in boston. this was the scene around 1:40 this morning on mass ave. at boston street. boston e.m.s. transported the

emily: right now we are hoping to get new answers in last may's deadly crash involving an amtrak train. today investigators are expected to release evidence that could explain why the train was speeding into a sharp curve when it derailed near philadelphia. it reached 106 miles an hour before the engineer activated the emergency brakes. eight people were killed and more than 200 were injured in the crash. new this morning. the mbta is dealing with a slew of problems with its new commuter rail locomotives. "the globe" reports two of the trains had such problems with frozen engines and overheating that they had to be sent back to a pennsylvania facility for tests. the 40 new locomotives started running in 2014 at a cost of about $222 million. the mbta is now working with manufacturers to fix at least nine defects. but the "t" says the new engines are more reliable than the old ones and have been decreasing delays. randy: right now four staff members are under arrest charged in connection with an abuse scandal at a private school. the eagleton school, which is a

disabilities in great barrington, was raided this weekend. the four staffers are charged with assaulting students at the school. a fifth worker is accused of obstruction. all are expected to be arraigned today. the mattapan massacre case heads to the supreme court today. dwayne moore was sentenced to life in prison in the 2010 shooting of four people including a two-year-old. his lawyer sent letters to jurors in the case wanting to know if they were influenced by the mass shooting at sandy hook elementary as they deliberated in december of 2012. the d.a. say the letters are intimidating jury members. and she wants him banned from communicating with the panel. are asking for help stop a dangerous trend. they say there have been several incidents where someone threw small engine parts out of a moving vehicle into oncoming traffic. the objects have also been thrown at parked cars and homes. no one has been hurt. but there has been damage reported.

morning after a ski lift accident in new hampshire. police say two lift chairs collided at granite gorge in roxbury yesterday. several people were trapped and had to be lowered down. the injuries are not believed to be serious. the ski lift will be inspected before it runs again. randy: right now police in new hampshire are searching for a piece of art stolen right out of a gallery. manchester police say someone made off with this framed pencil drawing from the new hampshire institute of art. the theft happened sometime between november 25 and december 12. the artist, george stavrinos, grew up in somerville. police say they waited this long to ask the public for help because they've run out of leads. right now world health leaders are preparing to hold an emergency meeting to search for ways to stop the spread of the zika virus. the mosquito-born illness is spreading explosively in south and central america. here in the united states, there

that's been the theme. december and january. both above normal. when you put those two months together, the average temperature higher than any other in history. at least on record for boston. so number one there setting another record here with the warm temperatures. you can see how mild it is out the door this morning. typically on may 1 an average low temperature for boston is about 45. about where we are this morning. 46 degrees in town. beverly is in the mid 40's. mid 40's on the cape. plymouth 48. worcester 42. a few spots running closer to 30. orange back up toward nashua, new hampshire. you can see the wind kicking up through the southwest. you'll notice the breeze today. it is feeding up all of this mild air from the south. you can see 50 in new york city. even warmer south of there. and that's the air mass that is coming out ahead of this frontal boundary. this front is going to cross our area this evening. as it does so, there might be a spot shower. other than that, just clouds and sunshine today but notice out toward the four corners region, you see this? this is snow around the denver area. that will develop into quite a

midwest through tomorrow. blizzard warning up for the northwestern part of iowa. this will be a pretty powerful storm. it will approach us on wednesday. we're going to be ahead of it on the warm side so it will bring us rain. today near record warm temperatures. 58 is the forecast in boston. the record is in the mid 60's. low 60's is the record in worcester. so i don't think we'll quite get to records today but a very spring-like afternoon indeed with temperatures in the upper 50's. could make a run toward 60 degrees in taunton today. that southwesterly wind is coming in off the ocean for the cape. so it's a little cooler for you. notice by mid afternoon, it's pretty quiet. there will just be clouds overhead. by this evening one or two showers may develop along that cold front down on the south coast and the cape. then the front passes by. the skies clear out. temperatures tonight are down in the 20's to around 30 degrees. it's a quiet one for tomorrow. ground hog day with high pressure in control. a break in the action tomorrow. lots of sunshine. down in the 40's. as we hit wednesday that storm approaches from the west.

the city. emily. emily: thank you. some of the stories we're following right now on the eye. today the first votes will be cast in the race for the white house. iowa caucus voters meet at 7:00 p.m. tonight to pick their candidates for president. right now a three-year-old child is in the hospital after being injured in some way at a home in roxbury. police have been at the scene on alpine street all night long, but few details have been released. breaking overnight. a woman is seriously injured after being hit by a car in boston. police say it likely happened on another street and the victim was dragged to mass avenue near columbia road. kevin was talking about that. it happened just before 2:00 a.m. that victim was taken to boston medical center and state police say she may not survive. randy: right now a weymouth firefighter is under investigation all over a facebook post about drug addicts. the eye's frank holland is live in weymouth with the action city leaders are taking today. frank: weymouth's mayor, fire

hold a meeting after that facebook post went viral. the post allegedly made on a firefighter's personal facebook account. it calls the overdose-reversing drug narcan "the worst drug ever created." the post suggests letting overdose victims die. after reading that post, people flooded the fire department's official facebook page, some calling the comments disgraceful. we talked to one man who drove straight to the fire department. it's very emotional for him. he lost his son, a veteran, to an overdose in may. >> i wasn't angry. i wasn't going there to start a i know most firemen are great people. that guy, you know, i wanted to bring a photo of my son in when he was in his uniform not that long ago. "our first responders take their jobs very seriously. we have a mission to protect and save lives.

message than that." we reached out to him but we have not received a comment. it's not confirmed that the firefighter actually posted the message. we are told he is still on the job this morning. live in weymouth, frank holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. emily: the longtime girlfriend of convicted mobster james whitey bulger will go back before a federal judge this week pleading guilty to contempt charges. catherine greig is already serving an eight-year prison term for helping bulger avoid capture during his 16 years on the run. she plans to plead guilty on wednesday to disobeying a judge's order to testify about other people who helped bulger stay under the radar. bulger is serving life for murder and racketeering. 6:35. right now two women are preparing to face a judge charged with keeping several children in filthy conditions. randy: the eyeopener's doug meehan is in worcester with the accusations they'll face today. doug: randy, emily, good morning. later on this morning, these women will be at this worcester courthouse facing several charges in connection to that

endless winter. cindy does remember this well. that. cindy: two of four major storms weeks' time. we called that one the ground hog day storm. then there were two more all between, you know, valentine's day and the end of january. it was rough. randy: it was a nightmare. cindy: that was so last year. we're going to be up near 60 degrees today so quite a difference but i am watching a storm that is coming out of the fowrn corners region. this is going to produce a lot of wintery weather through the rockies and the plains and the midwest. blizzard warning now for northwest iowa. you can see there's going to be snow north of chicago as well. this storm tracks toward us on wednesday. but look at our temperatures here by wednesday. yeah, in the 50's so it's going to bring in a lot of warm air as its tracks to our west. we'll see rain from that and these above average temperatures. they're sticking around. we should be in the mid 30's for highs this time of year. we're about 10 degrees warmer than that now in boston.

it's 42 worcester. you can see some mid 40's on the cape. and look at your 12-hour forecast. we jump up over 50 by about 10:00 this morning. mid to upper 50's here into the afternoon. sun will be mixed with clouds. it's basically a partly sunny breezy day with a southwesterly wind here that's coming out ahead of the frontal boundary. patchy clouds this morning. there are showers west of al bane. these are associated with a cold front. out ahead of it we're getting that mild air. the front will cross as we head toward this evening. at that time, we could see a couple of showers as it's pretty quiet through 3:00 this afternoon. and by this evening, one or two little isolated showers may develop here on the south coast and the cape. then that's it. we clear it out overnight behind the front. instead of the 50's we're down in the 40's. kiehler but lots of sunshine for ground hog day. it's a wind-swept soaking rain as that system comes in on wednesday. take a look at some of these rainfall totals. we could be talking about more than an inch of rain on wednesday. brennan. kevin: we're looking pretty good.

wcvb, newscenter 5. frank: a controversial social media post about overdose patients and narcan allegedly made by a firefighter is now under investigation here in weymouth. the post calls the overdose-reversing drug "the worst drug ever created." it also suggests that overdose patients should be allowed to die. the comments were allegedly made on the firefighter's personal facebook account. many have gone on the official fire department page to voice their concern and outrage. we have not confirmed the firefighter actually posted the comments. we reached out to him but haven't received a response. we're told the firefighter is still on the job. the mayor and other officials plan to meet today about the facebook post. live in weymouth, frank holland, wcvb, newscenter 5. doug: later this morning, two women arrested on drug charges will be inside this worcester courthouse. this is only part of the story. on friday police executed a
