>> reporter: elibeth hur, abc news, new york. >> looks great. the casting incredible i think on this one. emily: good morning. it's tuesday, february 2. i'm emily riemer. randy: i'm randy price. stories we're following right now on the eyeopener. it's a wrap in iowa. who came out on top. and the drama added to the race for democrats. emily: it's on to new hampshire the candidates already looking ahead to the next big vote. randy: a driver charged with dragging a woman through boston. what she says actually happened. emily: we will get to all of those stories. first we want to check in with cindy. it feels a bit more seasonal today. cindy: it is february after although we're still sitting at 40 degrees in boston. keep in mind a typical high is 36 after coming off our highs in the 60's yesterday. we have cooled down a bit.

of the city are quite a bit colder. in fact, 20's showing up through northern worcester county. orange at 24. we're below freezing in worcester at 31. at freezing beverly at 32. you can see from plymouth down to the cape we're running either side of the freezing mark as well. clouds from the overnight, they are shifting off shore with our frontal boundary and now high pressure is nosing in from the west. we will see a lot of sunshine today. however, there is a big storm right now coming through the middle of the country. and this will bring a lot of rain to us tomorrow. so enjoy the sunshine today. notice the temperatures are going to come out of the 30's into the mid 40's or so by lunchtime. and that's when we stay through the afternoon with mostly sunny wind. looking for highs in the mid to upper 40's today. not the 60's. we'll talk more about that rain coming in just a few minutes. olessa: good morning. it's a quiet start on the roads. a little bit of overnight construction is in place. a live look at the pike by allston/brighton. no problems. let's check out the rest of your trip as you make your way north of town, we have construction 93

then once again on the expressway northbound side by the south bay mall. south of town you're in good shape. 24, route 3, 95 a little bit of construction here approaching neponset street. no problems west of town. you're in good shape heading southbound out of new hampshire. so far we're expecting the trains and the buses to start the morning on schedule. emily. emily: commitment 2016. two big headlines as the road to the white house heads to new hampshire. it's now a three-man race on the republican side after a win for ted cruz and a strong showing for marco rubio. randy: and with no one able to claim a clear victory, we are headed for a bitter battle for the democrats. the eyeopener's erika tarantal is here with what to watch right now. erika: i'll give you a third headline-- they're still counting in some places this morning. the race between hillary clinton and bernie sanders still too close to call. both candidates addressed their supporters, but neither claimed victory. sanders: while the results are

we are in a virtual tie. clinton: i am excited about really getting into the debate with senator sanders about the best way forward to fight for us and america. erika: on the republican side, marco rubio's strong third-place finish ges him a big push as he heads for new hampshire today. and ted cruz's win over donald trump triggered a more subdued tone from the business mogul. trump cruz: tonight is is a victory for courageous conservatives across iowa and all across this great nation. trump: we finished second. i want to tell you something. i'm just honored. i'm really honored. i want to congratulate ted, and i want to congratulate all of the incredible candidates. erika: the frustration overnight actually came from election officials. a small number of precincts didn't report their results. in one case, someone had to go to one chairman's house and knock on the door. emily.

the field is getting smaller. two candidates have dropped out. democrat martin o'malley called it quits after getting less than a percentage point in iowa. and mike huckabee is doing the same on the republican side. the former arkansas governor won iowa in 2008 and finished in the basement last night. randy: for the rest of the candidates it's on to new hampshire. some were wheels up even as the caucus vote counting continued. emily: the eye's kelley tuthill is live in nashua where the first ballots will be cast one week from today. kelley? kelley: that's right. this will be election central starting now. that's for sure. republican chris christie will be here this morning, just one of the candidates pinning their hopes on the granite state. christie didn't even wait for the results. he arrived in new hampshire last night stumping for votes in hopkinton. jeb bush didn't even go to the hawkeye state. he's putting it all on the line here, turning the "live free or die" state into a "do or die" campaign stand.

the agency already had an open case on whyte before the police response. randy: a weymouth firefighter is suspended without pay over this facebook post. veteran firefighter mark carron called narcan the worst drug ever created and suggested letting addicts die. he posted the comment on his personal facebook page over the weekend. he's now been suspended for ninety days. emily: right now a sandwich woman is held on bail accused of dragging a woman three miles through boston. with her car. but she tells police they've got it wrong. the eye's sera congi is live this morning with the suspect's side of the story. sera: emily, the driver is accused of striking a couple before the woman got caught under her car, but she says it's not her fault. xaianying zhou hid under a coat in court yesterday. prosecutors say she struck a man and a woman on kneeland street in chinatown monday morning. a 48-year-old woman got trapped

dorchester. lawyers for zhou say she got out to check why her car sounded strange and then realized a woman was trapped so she tried to help. but witnesses say zhou got back in and kept going. >> it was horrible. i saw no head. i saw no hands. sera: the woman suffered serious injuries. her husband is expected to be okay. bail for zhou is set at $5,000. prosecutors now want her blood tested for drugs and alcohol. she's expected back in court later this month. live in boston, sera congi, wcvb, newscenter 5. randy: thank you. a daughter fights to keep her father behind bars 30 years after he murdered her brother. emily: "5 investigates" has the exclusive story of pain and punishment revisited. drone concerns have police experimenting. the new way they're taking down

randy: "5 investigates" a convicted murderer heads before a parole board today. emily: that's as his daughter fights to keep him behind bars. richard seymour was convicted of beating his 18-year-old son patrick to death with a propane tank and a hammer in the family's billerica home in 1986. he bound and gagged his daughter, paula, and threatened to kill her and cut his wife, regina, with a large kitchen knife. seymour will plead his case for freedom this afternoon before the state's parole board. >> i don't think anyone that has the ability to commit the atrocities that he has committed can be rehabilitated.

emily: it is officially groundhog day. all eyes will turn to pennsylvania to see what punxsutawney phil has to say about the winter. if he sees his shadow, the u.s. will deal with winter for six more weeks. but if he doesn't, we can expect warmer temperatures and an early spring. of course, those predictions are not always on the mark. cindy: mmmmm. emily: i remember a certain ground hog let us down last year. randy: the threat of six more weeks of winter is usually not much of a threat. cindy: we haven't had winter yet. randy: right, right. emily: maybe it will actually be coming. cindy: there you go. we have our own ground hog here

miss g. she lives in lincoln. at 10:00 this morning she will be making her prediction. you know what? the skies are going to be clear. she's going to see her shadow. randy: she probably called you. cindy: i haven't heard from her actually. what a day yesterday. it was so incredibly warm. we got so close to record highs for the day. didn't quite get there. february? that was the temperature in norwood. millis, beverly, 65. lawrence and fitchburg 63. in boston we got to 65. the record was 66 so we got so, so close. well above average which is in the mid 30's. by the end of the month the average high would be in the low 40's for us. typically we do get close to a foot of snow in the month of february. they are getting snow this morning far from here. you can see east of denver through the plains states headed up through iowa this morning, snow flakes are flying. we're going to continue to track this morning to our west. on the northwest side of that

storm warnings here in the pink but where you see the orange these are blizzard warnings that are up for parts of nebraska all the way up into iowa and southwestern minnesota so this is a pretty powerful storm but it will track to our west and pull up some of this warmer air over the southeast right now. we're going to go back into the 50's tomorrow as that storm approaches our area so it will be rain for us this go-round. you see the temperatures this morning are down in 20's to worcester county. now. notice your 12-hour forecast. this is down right around sunrise into the upper 20's. then we recover slowly back into the 40's this afternoon. there will be a lot of sunshine so starting out near or below freezing north of town, even south of town as well. it's 33 as you head out the door in hyannis, but the skies have been clearing out. we have high pressure now nosing in, in the wake of the frontal boundary that moved through overnight with the clouds. with the highs settling in, we'll see a lot of sunshine today. look at the winds. they'll stay at or below 10 miles an hour. light winds, sunshine. temperatures in the 40's.

you would think today was fantastic. it will still be a really nice winter's day with temperatures about 10 degrees above average but compared to yesterday we'll of course feel cooler to you. tonight we fall back into the 30's. as we start out with clear skies overnight, we're going to watch the clouds come in here during the overnight hours. that will blanket us through 5:00 tomorrow morning. it is dry. this area of low pressure is going to shift to our west. pull a cold front through in the afternoon. i think it's during the afternoon hours that will get in on our heaviest rain. we'll break that down on your wednesday. temperatures start out near the freezing mark here in the morning hours. i hit the wrong button. let's see if we can get that back for you. nonetheless we have some rain coming in on wednesday. there it is again and that rain during the morning hours is not really going to be all that heavy. it could start out in the northwest corner with a little bit of icing here. the rain really shifts in late morning through mid afternoon. yellows, oranges around for the evening commute though. just heavier downpours. can't rule out a rumble of thunder especially in southeastern massachusetts toward the evening hours.

in 2014. zika is spread by infected mosquitoes. there is at least one confirmed case of the zika virus in massachusetts. thousands more reported around the world. a look at your economy now. google's new parent company alphabet is now the world's most valuable company. it topped apple yesterday after releasing fourth-quarter earnings, highlighting its extended growth. investors helped push alphabet stock up 4.6% yesterday. those rankings could quickly change in trading today. randy: asian stocks are mostly lower this morning as investors keep an eye on changing oil prices. the dow closed slightly lower yesterday at 16,449 after seeing sharp losses early on. right now, stock futures are down sharply. major job cuts for yahoo. "the wall street journal" reports the company is expected to chop 15% of its workforce or about 1,600 jobs. yahoo has struggled to expand

and facebook. emily: trending stories now. a burglar in pennsylvania gets sleepy on the job. police say they found the man taking a nap on a pile of pillows inside the marketing agency he had busted into. next to him, an empty pizza box. friday and kept the leftovers the suspect is facing burglary charges. randy: dutch police are using a new tool to take down what they call "hostile drones." eagles! the specially trained eagles are designed to hunt prey which in this case is a man-operated drone. dutch police have been looking for ways to disarm illegally operating drones. but a decision on this solution is still months away. emily: a popular new advertisement is already making the rounds on social media ahead of the super bowl. heinz trying to win the audience with its wiener dogs in hot dog buns.

after a dramatic finish to the iowa caucuses. senator ted cruz came out on top for the republicans in a surprising defeat over front-runner donald trump. but trump fared well in the voting as did senator marco rubio making this a three-candidate race. for the democrats, it was too close to call between hillary clinton and bernie sanders. votes are still being counted this morning. randy: a judge says bridgewater state university must release records tied to a sexual abuse scandal at the school's day care. he also criticized the attorney general's office for trying to block a lawsuit seeking those records. kyle loughlin, a former student-assistant at the day care, is charged with rape. the former daycare director is charged with trying to cover up the abuse. emily: police are investigating a hoax targeting a massachusetts congresswoman. police swarmed the home of katherine clark sunday night after receiving a computer-generated phone call stating there was an active shooter at the house. the call was quickly deemed false. clark introduced legislation back in november aimed at

hoax emergency calls. randy: two virginia tech students face a judge accused in the murder of a 13-year-old 18-year-old david eisenhauer was charged with killing nicole lovell. police say the two knew each natalie keepers is accused of helping dispose of the girl's body. police found lovell in north carolina saturday morning after emily: police are searching for a man accused of shooting a cab driver during a robbery attempt. this happened in worcester at stockton and vernon streets last night. the cab driver told police he responded for a fare when a man tried to rob him at gunpoint. the driver resisted and was shot. he is expected to survive. randy: a high speed chase massachusetts ends with the help attleboro police say two men robbed a bank yesterday afternoon, and took off down interstate-495 going more than 100 miles-per-hour. the chase ended in taunton where the taunton chief threw down spike strips and the attleboro chief rammed the car's bumper.

several charges. emily: a dangerous scene in vermont. police say an ice missile smashed through a woman's windshield. the 73-year-old woman suffered severe injuries to her face. the chunk of ice flew off of a tractor-trailer. police are now looking for that driver but do say there is no law in vermont to clear snow from your vehicle. randy: the san francisco police department is now under review by the justice department. the review will focus on police training and practices two months after police killed a young black man which prompting protests and calls for the chief to resign. the review is expected to take about two years and focus on racial and ethnic disparities. emily: an 8-year-old rhode island boy with terminal cancer is one step closer to his biggest wish to be famous. dorian murray will get his own license plate from the rhode island d.m.v. the wakefield branch will host dorian and his family on

coming in. notice through thursday, we're still above average around 50 degrees so the temperatures the first week of february here running above average. we've got mid 40's today in boston. notice once you get south of new york, they're in the 50's from philly down to d.c. northeast. all the action right now is out in the middle of the country where you can see this potent storm system spinning up. there will be some severe weather today. once you head toward missouri into the south eastern united states and on the backside of this low a lot of wintery weather with winter storm warnings in the pink and blizzard warnings extending up into iowa and southwestern minnesota as well. this will be a powerful winter storm but it will go to our west so it's going to bring in rain not snow. and typically during the month of february, we do see close to a foot of snow. last year, as you know, we got walloped just in february alone we had nearly 65 inches of snow. in 2014, we had close to two feet. in 2013 we had over two feet of snow, almost three. we can get a lot of snow in the
