>> wcvb newscenter 5 starts right now. maria: a car plows right into a newton restaurant. ed: the customers and workers caught in the path. >> and the witnesses who watched the horror unfold. ed: the final report on that runaway train. >> the changes being made. harvey: rain and in some cases sleet and freezing rain and the wind and the temperature change that will follow. maria: no escape. the woman caught outside of a tornado and the decision that saved her life. ed: an s.u.v. plows right through this building. two people are dead tonight. several are hurt. i'm ed harding. maria: maria stephanos. we are getting new information about exactly what hand. reid continues to be live on reid? reid: moments after this s.u.v.

newton pizza shop, those hurt were rushed to local hospitals. for two people, however, the injuries were fatal. >> what we know right now is that the employees are are a-- accounted for. reid: witnesses described the witness driving at a high rate of speed. the driver of this mazda hit by the out of control s.u.v. told us it never stopped or slowed down before it ended up inside sweet tomatoes. >> it sounded like a bomb going off. the building shook. the alarms went off. reid: donna was doing her nails done next door. after calling 911 she was one of many who went inside to help describing a violent and horrific scene. >> they were screaming they were hurt.

debris off of people. reid: the cause of the crash is unclear. the driver is one of of -- the seven people that were hospitalized. a large red tarp now drapes over the gapping hole of the restaurant -- gaming hole of -- gaping hole of the restaurant. the issue here is the damage that the initial crash caused. they're being very careful and cautious about removing the s.u.v. because they're concerned that it could bring down the roof of the restaurant when they remove it. so that is something that police and investigators and some engineers are keeping a close eye on. the victims' bodies have been removed. the driver of that s.u.v. is

that's the story in newton. maria: thank you. mary is on the scene. you're talking to people who saw it happen. mary: saw it, heard it and actually felt it. one of the tenants told me the entire building shook. >> i heard a huge crash . the alarms went off in the building. mary: a tenant who felt her building shake came running down finding a car that had crashed in the pizza shop below. >> it looked like sarajevo. i heard one of the e.m.t. saying we're going to triage. it was really serious. mary: another woman described the chaotic scene. >> people were just screaming. people were trying to lift rubble off of people. mary: witnesses saw bodies on the ground. some of them bloody and not

>> from what i understand from the manager, the car pushed the counter all the way back to the oven. so it went all the way through. it's a very busy time for that place. so there were customers there and there are workers there. i know the manager was almost in shock worried about who got sick, who got hurt. firefighters said there were fatalities. she said i think some of my staff had broken legs. so i'm praying for broken legs. mary: she meant broken legs versus fatalities. this building is not safe to be inside. what you're looking at are crews trying to pull that car out of that pizza shop. there is concern that the ceiling could collapse. still a very active scene. it will be some time before washington street is reopened. we're live in newton. ed: let's show you from our other camera, newton fire is there. you can see the car is still inside there.

the tarp that has covered the building through the majority of the evening has been removed. the car is still in the building. there are concerns about the building itself. so we'll be watching that throughout the news at 11:00. now to commitment 2016. it is still too close to call here in massachusetts. hillary clinton is slightly ahead of bernie sanders. maria: on the republican side donald trump has nearly half of the vote here. across the country really it's a huge night for both clinton and for trump. ed: you hear both candidates laying the groundwork for a november matchup. clinton wins the state that she was experted to win heading into supertuesday. alaska, georgia, tennessee and, and texas. bernie sanders has two wins in vermont and in oklahoma as well. maria: donald trump is celebrating sweeping several states including massachusetts,

also virginia and arkansas. the only other winner on the g.o.p. side senator ted cruz, he takes his home state of texas and also neighboring oklahoma. phil: clinton and sanders were the first to speak tonight. both looking past super tuesday and towards the future. senator sanders talking about his revolution. secretary clinton taking a shot at donald trump. >> this campaign is not just about electing a president. it is about transforming america. to the republican side, donald trump is the big winner tonight. he spoke from palm beach focused on clinton. senator cruz who chucked up a couple of wins is vowing to continue to fight. >> i'm going to be very good for the world. i'm going to get along with the world. you're going to be very proud of me. even you will be very proud of me as a president. but we have to build our country. our country is going to hell. and hillary clinton doesn't have a clue. she didn't do that. >> so long as the field remains divided, donald trump's path to the nomination remains more likely. and that would be a disaster for republicans. >> senator marco rubio still without a win. says he's staying in the race as well. everyone's trying to put their spin on the race but math will be setting in. ed: no spin here. all right. guys.

big changes after that. ed: a final report just out gives new details on what happened and john atwater is live in braintree. john: tonight for the first time the operator is responding. at the center of the investigation a microphone cord wrapped around the train's throttle. investigators blamed the operatoror after he then flipped an emergency bypass switch. did you hear about this report that came out? >> yeah, i got it. john: they're blaming you. >> i'm all set. john: it seems counterintuitive. >> of course, it is. things also fail too.

the operator said it was operator error my fall. he said he did not engage a break before leaving the train to flape switch. signal problems that december morning prompted the emergency bypass procedure to get the train moving. vasquez sustained a cut as it took off full speed without him onboard. john: you did see the report where you saw the cord around the throttle? >> that's a whole different situation. john: and not engage -- the brake was not engaged. vasquez won't discuss the details of the incident which cost him his job but that five and a half mile journey without an operator has propertied the team to require a second set of eye when signal problems force employees to bypass safety systems. and other recommendations include moving that emergency switch onboard the train and adding cameras.

when that s.u.v. that is still in the restaurant actually crash into the restaurant. this is in the heart of west newton where washington street and watertown street merge right on that corner. sweet tomatoes in there. you can see the truck in position to pullle that s.u.v. out. that s.u.v. is still inside as they figure out the smartest way to get it out of there. maria: private pictures get into the wrong hands. tonight, a south carolina teacher is looking for a new job. ed: her name is lee. she admitted she took marshally nude pictures to send to her husband. a student took her phone and went through her pictures and sent them to other students without her knowledge. she was facing a disciplinary hearing but decided to resign. >> he knows right and wrong. he knows that he -- you know, he had the ultimate decision to take pictures of my -- of my pictures and he had the ultimate

while an appeals court considers whether to toss that case out. bill cosby is accused of drugging and sexually assaulting a temple university worker back in 2004. by the way, that case is separate from cosby's cases here in massachusetts. ed: it appears to be game over for sports authority. the company will file for bankruptcy. sports authority will try to get financing to stay in business. but if not, all stores could be closed by the end of april. the nation's fourth largest sports retailer has four stores here in massachusetts. maria: unbelievable video here this is out of louisiana. you can see a woman run right up to these locked doors. that's when debris starts to fly. she walked away unbelievably with no injuries. kyra johnson made her fedex delivery to this fedex store up. she said she did not realize it was coming. it tur -- surprised her.

it's been good. harvey: certainly had some crazy ex-twreem winds. -- extreme with the winds. before this overnight is done, the wind will become a factor again. i do want to show you the temperatures. we're at 32 in orange. 34 in worster. precipitation is only an hour away. after that, the tendency is going to be for the temperature to rise. it's already rising in the south coast. the wind is gusting to almost 30 in block island and over 25 miles an hour in pits seal. the winds will increase, the temperatures will rise but the precipitation is starting to rapidly move. once more it's in this region that there can be an hour or two of freezing rain before the milder temperatures take over. and they will because the storm

spite of bright sunshine. after we get through thursday, then we have to look at friday. there is going to be a disturbance coming ott of the ohio river valley. we'll be on the northern edge of the snow shield on friday. right now, early thinking is that the core of the storm will stay too far south and east to give us big snow. we have small accumulations and maybe more than that down around the cape and the islands. if that storm should nudge closer to us then it would be a different ballgame. check it out. we're into a colder period after that warm, windy and wet start to tomorrow morning with the cold weather staying through the weekend. temperatures moderating next week. but both saturday and sunday though cold look like they're be on the dry side. just a chance of a few flurries on sunday. in terms of any real wintry weather friday is the day to watch. maria and ed. ed: we were following two stories. hillary clinton and donald trump
