this is wcvb newscenter 5 at noon. heather: good afternoon. thanks for joining us. i'm heather unruh. erika: and i'm erika tarantal. we'r following several breaking stories right now. u.s. olympic swimmer ryan lochte has apologized for his behavior and for not being more careful or candid regarding what he claimed was a robbery in rio. heather: also breaking in presidential politics donald trump's campaign chairman paul manafort has just resigned. this after the thrid trump -- third trump reorganization.

under investigation in woburn. five investigates has learned this little boy rushed from his babysitter's apartment has died. and his twin sister is still hospitalized. the question now -- what happened? sera congi joins us with the latest from woburn. sera: erika, what happened to the two children here in this woburn apartment is still a mystery. we know both the da's office and the department of children and families are investigating. pkg a fractured skull and other injuries, when he was in this woburn apartment under the care of a longtime family friend. an ambulance was called here monday afternoon, taking noah and his twin sister, who was also hurt to the hospital. >> no comments. sera: a woman behind the door of the apartment, only saying no comment. last night noah died from his injuries. a sign outside his family's home reads, the family would like to thank you all for your love, support, kind words and prayers. at this time the family would appreciate their privacy to be

director of operations, says nothing like this has ever happened here before. in fact, he says they've never even had to break up a fight. >> we pride ourselves on being a family-oriented business. we're not a bar room. we're a place where families come, kids come. the da's office will only say -- antoinette the da's office : will only say the 31-year-old man who was stabbed suffered critical injuries and was taken to the hospital. the restaurant says they don't know exactly what went down or how many people i they closed after midnight. >> totally unfortunate incident that we have no idea what provoked this discussion outside that turned into a stabbing. antoinette: now the search is on for a suspect, who we're told took off on a street bike. police hoping surveillance cameras captured enough clues to help them track him down. the restaurant says they have

kenneth: the brash, tell it like it is republican speaking, but not issuing as specific apology. the candidate trying to strike a more presidential look. and this may be the person behind it. >> i hope everyone has criticized him at some david, for being insensitive or mocking someone, shows some recognition and forgiveness. kenneth: the hillary clinton camp launched harsh criticism, calling it an act. the chump campaign put out its first out of the general election, a $4.8 million ad by that will run in four states.

-- that will push the really soupy air down to our south. a pretty typical august day. however, there is humidity. you will notice it returning, especially sunday into monday. we will break that down for you, just ahead. erika: woman faces charges with this chaotic scene in boston's downtown crossing. three people injured. police say the woman drove her car into a pedestrian tour group. 25-year-old shanitqua steele will go before a judge this afternoon. witnesses say she ran away from the crash. it happened yesterday afternoon near washington and school streets. two women and a child were hit, two of them dragged. witnesses say they rushed to lift the car, but the driver wasn't stopping.

the woman was in the front of the car and everybody was telling her, and she was still trying to go. so, she knew they were there. erika: police tracked down the driver in a nearby building. the victims all suffered non life-threatening injuries. heather: new this noon, police in siesta key, florida releasing the 911 calls from a framingham woman allegedly stabbed by her teenage son while on vacation. 16-year-old gust ramgren is charged with attempted murder, accused of stabbing his mother and 14-year-old brother. melissa ramgren is a teacher in newton. she called 911 while suffering >> oh, my god, i don't know what happened. i was watching tv. what happened to him? please, we're going to die, my son is going to die. he stabbed my son and he came in and stabbed me. and he never stopped. he just kept stabbing. heather: gust ramgren remains in custody. his mother and brother still in

the aaron hernandez defense. the state supreme judicial court has ruled that attorneys for the former patriots star no longer need one of hernandez's cell phones. the lawyers were holding on to it and prosecutors were previously denied a chance to examine the phone. this court ruling clears the way for prosecutors to get a search warrant for the phone's contents. hernandez is awaiting trial for shooting and killing two men in the south end. he's already serving a life sentence for the murder of his one-time friend odin lloyd. heather: 5 investigates tonight log tens of thousands of underground natural gas leaks, and you're paying for them. this narrow pipe near north station has been venting natural gas into the air for the past 9 months. the source? a leak from the 100-year-old pipe under the street. >> i would think if i were to protect the citizens of boston i would do whatever i had to do and i would do it immediately. >> tonight on newscenter 5 at 5:00, 5 investigates reveals just how extensive this problem

>> 5 on the opioid crisis, a new approach to curb drug use near south station, remove the benches. last year, boston and mbta police noticed that atlantic avenue was a hub for drug activity, likely because people could loiter on the benches. those benches were removed, and more officers added. police say since then, drug activity has plunged in that area. >> the animal rescue league of boston wants to know who put this cockatoo in the garbage. the bird, now named mayfield, was found in its cage in the trash on norfolk street in dorchester. we're told mayfield is doing much better now. >> breaking news out of the olympics, american swimmer ryan lochte apologizes. what he said about his behavior in rio. >> it is an event for people of all ages all the time. why one family says they are dangerous and have gone to court.

>> you are watching newscenter 5 at noon. heather: right now, an investigation underway after this awful crash in new jersey. two buses that collided in downtown newark this morning. one of them practically split in half. one of the drivers was killed. at least 18 other people are hurts. -- are hurt. erika: researchers are looking for volunteers to be infected with the mosquito-borne zika virus. they're trying to speed up the process of developing a much-needed vaccine for zika. researchers in baltimore would inject paid volunteers with the virus, and study how their bodies react. the testing would start as early as this winter if federal regulators agree. meantime, the number of zika cases has risen to 35 in miami beach. florida health officials have considered making the city a

many think doing that would be a huge blow to the tourism industry thats been built there. -- that has been built there. people are urged to spray themselves and their clothing with mosquito repellent for precaution. heather: and more breaking news regarding that usa swimmers scandal in rio. gold medalist ryan lochte today apologizing for his behavior. he and 3 fellow swimmers apparently vandalized a gas station after a night out. and then they lied and said they we lochte's story has recreated an international embarrassment. >> olympic swimmer ryan lochte now saying he is sorry after he and three swimmers -- were robbed at gunpoint in rio. posting of social media, i want to apologize for my behavior last weekend in nothing more careful and candid in how i described the events of that

men posing as police. >> the guy had a gun. he tapped it, put it to my four head. reporter: but police say the surveillance video tells a different story. you see a swimmer poll -- a swimmer pull a sign off the wall. the guys are seen getting into the cap when they are confronted by this man. police say he was a gas station security officer the athletes until they handed over $50. at the video cuts out for three minutes. the athletes insist at that time they were held up at gunpoint, forced to hand over $400. at two of these swimmers landed in miami, jimmy feagin still in rio, agreeing to pay $11,000 to a charity to get his passport back. >> he is the one u.s. to be concerned because he is there.

say it was traumatic to be in a foreign country with a stranger pointing a gun, demanding money. he says regardless, he should have been more responsible. marci gonzalez, abc news, new york. >> turning to happy or news from rio -- here is a look at the medal count. the u.s. still on top with a whopping 35 of them gold. total. and great britain trails with 56. >> the obama administration is talking about a 400 million dollar cash payment to iran linked to the release a group of american prisoners. the state department denying this was a case of ransom being paid for u.s. citizens. >> we got our american citizens out first, and then because we wanted to make sure we have the leverage to get them out a flea, then the $400 million that was iran's, that was released to them. erika: state department

negotiations over those funds and the release of the americans were conducted separately. heather: footwear maker crocs now the target of a lawsuit. texas couple says that their 2-year-old son's foot got caught in an escalator while the family visited whitey. the lawsuit claims the crocs shoes were negligently and improperly designed. >> the company charged in a fatal circus tent collapse in lancaster, new hampshire is expected to plead not guilty next month. a father and his 8-year-old daughter were killed when a storm blew through the lancaster fairgrounds, toppling the tent last summer. 32 others were hurt. the company, walker events international, faces a felony charge of operating without a license and other violations. heather: the drop in massachusetts getting worse. 17% of the state is now under extreme drought conditions.

did lose power. quite a lot of damage across the area. we are watching the tropics right now. we have a tropical -- with an update on tropical storm fiona. that is way out in the atlantic. there is a wave behind it. this may be more concerned. this is getting organized. with this position and has a better chance of moving and moving toward the caribbean over the next week or so. from there, we have to keep a close eye on this. it is something we are watching. fiona is self, it does not look like it will impact any land areas. we will continue to monitor what is happening in the tropics. in terms of our rainfall, we talked about the deficit. right now we have the driest summer in the boston area.

inches of rain and boston. that is a record for the day. haverhill has not had two inches of rain since june 1, and that is why this drought situation is so dire across the area. greater boston, north shore, the merrimack valley as well. we are dry today, dry tomorrow. sunday into monday, that is our next chance of getting needed rain. in a meantime, we have nice weather to enjoy. mostly blue skies. humidity and check come out dew points in the lower 60's. we are 84 in nashua, 85 in bedford. lots of 80's. you get toward the beaches, plymouth, south of the cape, and we're running close to 80 degrees. if you have plans for the evening, temperatures slowly back to the 70's. temperatures by 8:00 this evening only down in the mid-70's.

slip back even more. high pressure dominating our weather today into tomorrow. that is why we will continue with the dry weather. you can get away without the air-conditioning. 60's for our cool suburbs overnight. tomorrow is very similar. mid-80's, a little build in with afternoon clouds. this area of high pressure begins to retreat eastward. we will get more of a southerly wind flow. that will bring in the humidity. this is pressing towards us. it looks like that will come in sunday through monday. most of the weekend is looking drive.
