>> from boston's news leader, this is wcvb newscenter 5 at noon. we begin with breaking news. sky 5 over route 9 in newton with a crash that may cause traffic issues for hours. two people injured. erika: rhondella richardson is live with exactly what happened and how this is impacting drivers. rhondella: a tough situation. state police updating the condition of two victims to serious. two adults were injured when that red car believed to be a

dudley road. the two passengers had to be extricated. there was entrapment. the jaws of life for used to get the door open and get them to brigham and women's hospital. eastbound of route 9 is now closed from parker street and langley road. traffic on the westbound side still moving but there is rubbernecking. the fire truck, state police them all investigate this scene. ha at a lot of wires down. it appears the poll is snapped in half. i don't know if you can see from this vantage point but from what i am looking at -- but from what i am looking at it is leaning down onto some power lines. two adults in that vehicle taken to brigham and women's hospital with serious injuries after a single car crash into a utility pole on route 9 eastbound in

was hit by a car. erika: let's get to antoinette antonio with new information from that scene. antoinette: we just got that new information just about one minute ago. we learned this was a two-year-old boy. terrifying moments for this family as that little boy was hit here along this street, a quiet tree-lined street at the bus stop this morning. police say the two-year-old was met lighted d of grove street and try very lane. police say that tyler was two years old once again and he was responsive. -- that toddler was two years old once again and he was responsive. >> she has of the children. so i think she walked them down to the bus stop to drop them off

that new information just coming in from norfolk police, we have learned the operator of the driver -- driving a bmw. witnesses say that woman did stop here at the scene and at this point no charges will be filed. we will keep you updated on that little boy's condition. erika: thank you. it turns out it could be an active afternoon. cindy: a flashback to summertime weather. it's in the 80's. we will watch for storms to pop up. marginal risk that some of these could be severe and i think the biggest impact will be the potential for stronger wind. things are pre-quiet. you can see the absence of a lot of clouds. a good amount of sunshine but to the north you could see some scattered showers and some embedded thunder.

hampshire. this is lining up near a frontal boundary that will continue to sink southward and run it to sticky air and it's going to help to generate storms. we got the sunshine. made 80's and i think by about 4:00 this afternoon to about 7:00 this evening that is our window. we will see some of the storms and once the storms go by notice how the temperatures drop off rapidly. on afternoon storms start to develop north and west of the worcester area but they will get closer into boston for drive times. 6:00 this evening and continue to drop southward. by 8:00 this evening storms will likely be weakening over the south coast, the cape and the islands as well. fast-moving storms. not everybody is going to see them the potential for stronger wind. there could be lightning in

just ahead. erika: new information about why gloucester's police chief is off the job. emily: sera congi with his attorneys comments on the situation unfolding. sera: the chief's attorney would not reveal what the investigation was about but they believe it is not related to his duties as chief and they say they are confident once the facts are in he will be back on the job. gloucester police chief leonard campanello praised for his work on drug addiction. leave. an internal investigation is underway. his lawyer in a statement this morning saying, it is our understanding that it has nothing to do with his duties as chief of police. we are confident that when all the facts are reviewed chief campanello will be quickly and expeditiously returned to his position. >> that is a deep question. sera: honored by the white house for his work on addiction,

taken to the hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound authorities say happened in north carolina. he's accused of gunning down officer on saturday. the officer died on monday. the second sentencing trial underway from a man who committed carjacking 15 years ago. a federal judge threw out gary lee samson's death penalty sentence because a juror lied about her background. sampson was sentenced to die for carjacking and killing jonathan makovsky during a -- during the crimes spree in 2001. he strangled a former concord city counselor. he was convicted separately in that crime erika:. state police are hoping new video posted to facebook may spark leads in the murder of susan to rascal its. found in the truck of her car 20 years ago.

crews say it could take hours for all of the lanes to reopen. erika: a dramatic car fire caught on camera in florida. the driver blaming a samsung galaxy note 7 smart phone for this. he says it blew up last night while charging. the st. lucie county fire district confirmed the car was fully engulfed but would not give a reason for the fire. firefighters still investigating . the consumer product safety commission urges consumers who own a samsung immediately. emily: a car slamming into them as they stood by a cruiser. the suspect is under arrest charged with three counts of attempted murder. investigators are saying he did this on purpose. an 18 year veteran goes down with a broken leg. another officer jumps out of the way and a third goes flying eight feet high on what was his first day on the job. the suspect continues to fight

>> these officers could have easily been killed and i thank god we are not planning three funerals right now. emily: police say mark luk juan may have been impaired but they insist crash was intentional. no motive has been released. erika: tropical storm julia dropping a lot of rain as it makes its way up the coast from florida. the slow-moving storm is expected to weaken to a tropical depression later today. cindy: julia formed last night. we have another one now. popped up last hour. we typically find that this time of year. number 12 is way out there and over the next five days it stays pretty far out there. continues to track. ian out through the atlantic east of bermuda.

are only 40 miles per hour but this has produced a lot of rain. it will continue to weaken overland but through friday produce a good amount of rainfall. the potential for three to six inches of additional rain with locally higher amounts of the 10. a flood threat down that way. when i going to be able to push this up the coast so we aren't getting in on any of that rain even though we do need it. we got blue skies for now but that is going to change as we go through the afternoon. wind out of the west come way up. 85 degrees in boston. you probably noticed humidity. dew point temperatures in the sticky range. we got a frontal boundary that has brought in the humidity behind it. it's going to dry out so this is a one-day kind of stint with this more humid air. this front will be the trigger for storms as we get into the afternoon and storm prediction center eyeing our area with a

like the driver for that will be the potential for stronger wind and the trees are so stressed from the drought is not going to take a lot of wind to do some damage. we saw that on sunday and we could see it again with storms this afternoon. all is quiet right now on the radar into the north we are seeing a few of those storms. the atmosphere becoming more unstable as this front drops southward. for now have been baking under the sunshine. boston, 85. we got 84, fitchburg. lots of 80's showing of south as well. 70's for the west southwesterly wind. another few hours. as we get toward 4:00 to 6:00 i think that is when things get really active. when the wind shifts the temperatures will drop back into the 70's. 3:00 this afternoon, north and west of worcester in southern

they will get closer into boston as we get toward the evening commute. notice how the storms begin to weaken as they approach the south coast and the cape. about it :00 this evening. several hours we find the storms popping up. they are fast movers, maybe a brief downpour but the biggest concern i have is the potential for damaging wind. heads up that you will be heading to gillette for the springsteen concert. there is a risk of a storm early on. temperatur lows. 40's and 50's tomorrow morning and tomorrow despite sunshine behind that front it is feeling like fall, temperatures in the upper 60's and low 70's. beautiful weather through friday . a little bit of a moderating trend. we could see back into the 80's.

into monday. erika: a turtle getting a second chance. emily: thanks to students at worcester polytechnic institute. this is lola with her new prosthetic flipper. students help create the first of its kind part which mimics the way lola's healthy flipper moves. the students build the flipper using 3-d printing. lola possible up or had to be amputated after it got caught in erika: the country's oldest lighthouse celebrates 300 years in boston. boston light since on a small island close to halt. the 89 foot tower was built by the british were destroyed in the american revolution and rebuild in 1783. the coast guard relit the lighthouse in a ceremony earlier today. you want to survive your vacation.

a car slammed into a pole taking a number of wires down. this crash happened on the eastbound side between parker street in langley road. two people were trapped in the car caught in the wires. state police saying one of the two people hurt is in serious condition. crews say he could take hours for the lanes to reopen. emily: a close call for a california man seen jumping from a waterfall in hawaii. that drop is nearly 200 feet. the man says he spontaneously decided to jump but he was knocked unconscious when he hit the water and lucky for wrists realized something was wrong and -- tourists realized something was wrong and jumped in to save him. thank of his they were there. erika: let that be a lesson to all of us really. cindy: we're going to watch that threat for the afternoon. between 3:00 and 8:00 p.m. once the storms and, turning
