mike wankum, we've got patriots home opener today and tailgating starting soon. mike: i think you'll be okay. there will be spot showers out there. it's not like a real heavy duty rain we're talking about. the areas that have a bit of sunshine, notice how the temperatures warm to the 70's. the areas that have been gray and scattered showers this morning, pretty much left into the 60's. you see the dividing line. we'll get this first batch moving through this morning. then it will taper off as we go through the headed to gillette stadium, i'd suggest bringing along foul weather gear. if you leave it home, you'll get showers over the stadium. there's a shower on 495 weakening as we speak. what will happen is these lines will continue to work their way through. as we get into the afternoon, it's more gray skies with holes in the cloud cover. then we'll wait until later on tonight. a batch of showers will develop off to our west.

be on the slow side because of the rain moving through. much more on the rain timeline and what kind of weather you can expect later this week as fall arrives on thursday. antoinette: breaking news out of new york this morning -- the city on high alert after an explosion in the chelsea area of manhattan sending more than two dozen people to the hospital. a second device also found just blocks away. officials saying that device is a pressure cooker with wires. todd: let's get to ws the breaking detail reporter: the mayor is saying while they believe it's an intentional act, they don't have any connection to terrorism. you can see people running as debris was sent flying into the air. >> it was so loud, it started shaking my body, so i turned around, i looked.

reporter: this cell phone video shows a good samaritan helping one of the 29 people injured. fire officials say most have minor injuries but one person does have serious injuries. >> there is no evidence at this point of a terror connection reporter: the blast appears to have taken place in a construction toolbox in front of a residence for the blind 8:30 saturday night. >> as of this time, the exact cause of the explosion has not reporter: a second device was found about four blocks away. the pressure cooker with wire attached to a cell phone. hours later it was safely removed, but officials have not confirmed if that device is an explosive. federal and local officials are on the scene. there are no leads on who is behind the attack. antoinette: the device found at that second scene showing similarities to the ones used in the boston marathon bombing. todd: the device appears to be a

confirmed could be an explosive device at this point. the pressure cookers that exploded here in 2013 were packed with shrapnel. the pressure cooker bombs were detonated by a transmitter made from a remote control with a battery underneath. that battery was connected with a piece of black electrical tape. antoinette: the mayor of new york saying the explosion in manhattan has no known connection to an new jersey saturday morning. a pipe bomb exploded in a trash can in seaside park right along the route of a marine corps charity run. the explosion occurred just before thousands of runners were expected to take off. they were not nearby, and the race was canceled. the f.b.i. is now taking over that investigation. both hillary clinton and donald trump reacting to the explosion in new york. trump declaring that a bomb went off before officials had

aryan nation and the k.k.k. than he does from leaders of his own party. todd: right now, two divers are injured after being pulled from the water off the coast of nahant. one of those divers is in extremely critical condition. the divers were located by civilian boaters near the northeastern marine biology center. emergency responders performed c.p.r. on at least one of the divers before transporting them to salem hospital. authorities are still investigating exactly what happened. the identities of the we're learning new information about the teenager who was killed by a commuter train. "the globe" is reporting the teen killed was a 14-year-old boy from newton. the train hit the boy just before 9:00 near the west newton station. police and the d.a.'s office are investigating the circumstances, but foul play is not suspected. "the globe" reports the boy was not currently a student in newton but had previously

newton high schools will have counselors available tomorrow. antoinette: police are searching for the driver of this black pickup truck. a 31-year-old woman suffered multiple injuries in this strange crash. police believe the worcester resident was talking to the driver in the parking lot of the b.p. gas station on chandler station 6:30 start morning. at some point, the pickup driver sped up with that woman clinging to the driver side window. eventually, the woman fell from road. she is listed in stable condition. time now 8:08. we are following several other big stories right now. todd: eight people hurt after an attack at a mall. what witnesses say the man was saying as he stabbed shoppers. antoinette: the air force grounds new fighter jets. the problems with the planes being called the most expensive weapons in military history. mike: and rain is finally on the

we continue to follow breaking news out of new york this morning. an explosion last night rocked manhattan's chelsea neighborhood. todd: more than two dozen injured in the explosion. newscenter 5's diane cho is here with the breaking details on the investigation. reporter: the mayor saying the explosion was deliberate but there's no indication this is connected to terrorism at this time. the explosion happened just after 8:30 in the chelsea neighborhood of manhattan. 29 people were injured, one seriously.

we do have more opportunities. later today, especially overnight tonight and tomorrow morning. right now, where are we dealing with the showers? that area along 495 drifting its way now into essex county. most of this is just sprinkles more than anything else. hopefully, it will survive enough that you'll get some towards gloucester. it's light stuff. the central part of the state right now, from orange stretching down to the south, we're seeing a nice batch of showers here. this that you're seeing lighter green is glorified sprinkle a little rain hitting the ground. these are not heavy downpours. they're just showers moving through. if you look to the berkshires, there's another area ready to come into it. it comes from albany to scranton. this line is pushing eastward as well. we'll see these this morning. the afternoon, a threat of spot showers out there. a lot of gray skies. it will be muggy as well. i don't know that we'll have that much action going on during the afternoon hours. here's the way the map looks at

see redevelopment going on. for most of us, we have to wait until after midnight. 8:00 tonight, pop-up showers. look at this, 1:00 in the morning right after midnight. that's why late tonight, you want to close the windows. you can have thunder and lightning waking you up. tomorrow morning, your morning commute is sliding its way tomorrow morning commute's could be on the slow side. a few downpours. not looking for anything serious out of it. if you get a heavy downpour and heavy traffic going on, you know what happens. it slows everything way, way down. tomorrow during the day, a lot of gray skies. could be a hit or miss showers. most of the focus will be during the morning hours. when you put it all together, we'll see between 1/2 and an inch of rain. some areas getting more than that, but it's going to be pockets. we can handle all of this rain.

stabbing attack at a minnesota mall. the attacker was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer. the attacker reportedly made references to allah. police say the motive of the attack is unclear, and they declined to call it terrorism. todd: a charter bus crash in north carolina leaves four people dead and dozens injured. the bus was carrying a south carolina college football team. it struck a bridge on highway 47 and blew a tire. the bus then veered off the side of t r 42 passengers were injured and four people were killed. the status of the driver and ages of the players are unknown at this time. antoinette: the u.s. air force has been forced to ground some of its new f-35 fighter jets. bad insulation was discovered in the cooling lines of fuel tanks. the faulty lines affect 57 aircraft, 10 of which were already in the field. those 10 will be fixed. the remainder will be fixed before delivery. the f-35 is described as the most expensive weapon in

antoinette: school is back. so is our a-plus segment. from a.p. classes, sports and a part-time job to help support her family, shellaina gordon of fitchburg high school has a full plate. i got a chance to catch up with her in school recently. >> we hug. we embrace, but she's a blur in the hallway because she's going to her next a.p. class. antoinette: that's shellaina gordon in a nutshell, always on the go. is taking five a.p. classes. she plays field hockey and lacross. she's active in class and makes time for model united nations. >> you represent a country and you come together and try to figure out the problems of the world. so like immigration, um, refugees. antoinette: but her future plan is to be a doctor. >> i like the idea of me becoming a doctor so i can help people. antoinette: people like her own

autism and one who suffers epilepsy. for now she's helping out by squeezing in an after-school job on top of everything else, much of that money going to her family. and shellaina's mentor says despite having to grow up quickly, she's never once complained. >> and when i finally understood the enormity of what she was dealing with, there are a lot of adults that couldn't cope with that. antoinette: shellaina says juggling it all isn't easy, but she wouldn't change a there, and there's a future for everybody. so look where you can go. look what you can be and things like that. antoinette: that unstoppable attitude, one of many reasons shellaina gordon deserves this a-plus. shellaina is applying to northeastern, b.u., harvard and yale. i asked her how she has time to do all those applications. she says keeping busy helps her stay motivated. todd: she's going to be an excellent doctor. so positive, too.

franklin police are looking for a man who pretended to be one of them. police say a woman was pulled over on new hampton road, asked for her license, registration, and then let go. the suspect had blue and white lights on his car and was wearing a dark uniform. the man did not display a badge. officers say this is the only incident they're aware of, but they did increase patrols in the area. and they also stayed with the victim at her home. >> no badge or firearm was displayed during the incident. she definitely felt uncomfortable and felt something was wrong with that situation. todd: impersonating a police the suspect could face 3 1/2 to seven years in prison. police are asking anyone with information to give them a call. antoinette: pushing for pot despite a last-minute permit fight. boston's pro marijuana freedom rally is underway this weekend. and it looks to be bigger than ever. todd: people attending are excited about recent polls showing massachusetts voters are close to legalizing recreational pot in november. newscenter 5's david bienick was at boston common as the rally

the pilot was brought to the hospital with burns. the cause of the crash is under investigation this morning. a ride to remember. hundreds of cyclists taking part in the annual trip from springfield to boston, all to honor our legal heroes. antoinette: the 106-mile ride ended at the state house after more than 12 hours of riding. many of the 350 riders wear a badge themselves. one man took part in the ride for h four years ago. >> he was one of the funniest people i've ever met. everyone that i've ever came into contact that knew him said the exact same thing, and that's what we try to remember. the good times he made us all laugh. antoinette: yesterday morning, we told you about officer brandon o'neil. he started the race on friday, and he actually ran the 106 miles to that finish line.

forecast with meteorologist mike wankum. mike: a fantastic day for such a great cause. today a little more rain out there but not much. little is the emphasis on the word right now. if you watched us over the last three hours, it blossoms up and waned a little bit. i don't know how much longer we'll hold on to this. ground reports are saying we're just getting a few sprinkles, maybe an occasional 1/10 inch. a little more as this is light stuff we're talking about that loops its way back through orange and heads toward springfield. that's it. if you go to the west, there are a few more batches. we'll see this all afternoon, a pop-up shower, a line moving through, a lot of gray skies and also a lot of humid. occasionally a few breaks in the cloud cover. here's the map at noon. not showing up for much. there could be a sprinkle or two or a few holes in the cloud

this morning, that will be fading away. it will be muggy this afternoon. it doesn't take much to get a shower going. 4:00, a little more development, one or two scattered showers. that threat is going to increase as we head after 4:00 through 8:00 tonight. the real focus of the rain doesn't happen until after midnight. here's the way the map looks at 1:00 in the morning. showers, occasional downpour, perhaps even a rumble of thunder. this line will march with reinforcements behind it. by monday morning, we're talking about downpours. tomorrow morning's commute could be slow. it's a monday, a morning, a commute. add a little water to it, and it's going to slow it down. as we head toward late morning, there's still so many downpours out there. eventually we kick most of the heavier stuff off. a lot of gray skies around. perhaps a spot shower during the afternoon hours. tomorrow devoted to gray skies. the heaviest rain during the morning.

it doesn't look that impressive. there will be isolated areas that pick up more than others. 1/2 inch to an inch of rain in most locations. some places may get more than that. the city is gray. hints of sunshine breaking through. 71 degrees. the dew point is climbing up. it's a muggy day. high temperatures today will be in the low 80's. even out to the west, where it's cooler with gray skies, we should see the mid 70's. the south shore cooler, especially toward the cape, where we'll see temperatures into the 70's. remember, it is going to be muggy. it won't feel as mild and comfortable as yesterday. more threat of showers later on tonight into tomorrow morning. that's when we can have the rumble of thunder. during the afternoon, tapering off to a few scattered showers. tuesday, could be lingering showers in the morning. look at wednesday and thursday. you like yesterday? it's a repeat. wednesday and thursday, sunshine is back.

antoinette: an explosion rocking the chelsea neighborhood in manhattan. todd: 29 people are injured. new york's mayor is explosion deliberate but saying there's no indication of terrorism. diane cho is here with the breaking details. reporter: 29 people said to have suffered minor injuries. the explosion happened around 8:30 last night. the blast appears to have originated in a dumpster in front of a residence for the blind. a second device was found, a pressure cooker. it was removed from the scene and brought to a department firing range.
