emily is off today. randy: i'm randy price here with cindy fitzgibbon. cindy: what a change yesterday. that wind is still out there. you can see it in boston out of the north-northeast. 23 miles per hour sustained with a temperature of 56 in boston. wind gusting over 30 in town, down on the south shore and plymouth. morning, and temperatures are in the 50's. a jacket required heading out the door are sure. a little bit of patchy drizzle showing up on the radar. out through parts of northern worcester county, you can see overall we just have cloud cover overhead. steadier rain is sitting to the south, and it is not moving in our direction. in fact, this area of high pressure to the north is bringing down drier air. as we go through the day, clouds

stages on the southbound side of 128. trains and buses on schedule. randy: right now, police are trying to unravel a bizarre mystery on the south shore. erika: all of this involving a young woman, a steep ravine, and a large crime scene. the eyeopener's antoinette antonio is live at weymouth police headquarters with what we know this morning. antoinette: it all started last night when that young woman called after they searched a wooded area. let's go ahead and take a look. all of this happening along 18 near the ramp to route 3. the weymouth fire department and police are all involved in the search. we can see officers climbing up and down that steep embankment with the rope. police also laid out several evidence markers, including one

releasing much information about this. we are still waiting to figure out how exactly that woman ended up down that embankment, and also her condition this morning. as soon as we learn more, we will bring it to you. antoinette antonio, wcvb newscenter 5. erika: right now, a boater rescued at sea is disputing allegations that his boat may have been unsafe. nathan carman says he would not have taken his mom out fishing if he thought his boat was not seaworthy. the pair was about a hundred sinking. carman made it to a life raft but there has been no sign of his mother. >> i did not see or hear my mom. i swam out to the liferaft, holding on to it. i got on board the liferaft and was looking around. i was calling out to my mom. erika: three years ago, court papers show nathan carman came under suspicion in the death of

carman was never charged in that still unsolved death and denies any involvement. randy: right now a 14-year-old is in custody accused of opening fire at a south carolina elementary school, and police say he is also a suspect in his father's death. police say the gunman drove up to the townville school and opened fire on the playground. two students and a teacher were shot. the teenager quickly taken down by a volunteer firefighter. the school was evacuated and frantic parents picked up their >> it's scary. you don't think anything like this would ever happen around here. randy: then a twist two miles away -- a 911 call. 47-year-old jeffrey osborne was found shot to death. police believe his son killed him, then went to the school and opened fire. authorities say the teacher and one student are back home this

boston. the eyeopener's sera congi is live with how hundreds will make their voices heard today. sera: that rally today will focus on safety concerns all around boston. especially for people who walk and ride their bikes on streets across the city. there have been growing calls for change after a string of tragic crashes, including the one that killed boston university researcher anita kurmann. she was struck and killed while riding her bike near the intersection of be the group organizing today's rally the vision zero coalition wants the city to spend more money on redesigning roads. hire more staff to deal with the issue. and deliver on goals laid out last year including lowering the speed limit on boston streets. mayor walsh's office says he is committed to all of that. today at the rally they will have representatives from the

line has a couple canceled trains but everything else is on schedule. erika: this morning, u.s. attorney carmen ortiz is speaking out days after releasing a critical report on the boston latin school. ortiz tells "the globe," quote, "we hope that by affirming some of the issues and problems that were being faced by a group of students, that those problems will be addressed." her recent investigation concluded civil rights of students were violated when the school failed to look into racial harassment claims. ortiz says she's confident reforms underway at th umass is planning a huge upgrade. the university system will spend $2.5 billion on campus improvements over the next five years. that includes $212 million in upgrades on the boston and amherst campuses, along with a big renovation to umass lowell's largest dorm. the move comes as students express concern about increased tuition to the state schools.

by a hit and run driver in brockton. two years later there are still no suspects and few leads in that case. and they want that to change. they sang and they prayed. all of the people gathered at the site of that crime last night want the same thing, justice for 31-year-old carl yancey. he'd just left his job at shaw's two years ago and was crossing belmont street when he was struck and killed. yancey's mother begging for the driver to do the right thing. >> this is the most painful part about it, that he was left, then nobody stopped. >> a.l. is totally heartbroken about it -- i was totally heartbroken about it when it happened.

the toddler has broken bones and other injuries but is expected to be ok. the mother could face criminal charges. sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. erika: police in san diego say a man shot and killed by an officer was holding an electronic cigarette. video shows the man holding the device while taking a so-called shooter's stance. before the shooting, the sister of the victim told police that her brother had suffered from an emotional breakdown, but that he was unarmed. video of the shooting to police, but it has not been released. randy: the family of a man shot and killed by framingham police will get $3.75 million. 68-year-old eurie stamp was killed by accident during a swat drug raid in 2011. his family sued and details of the settlement were just released. emily: this longtime rhode island mobster is expected to plead guilty to blocking the investigation into the killing

he said if he didn't see it he would not have believed it. unfortunately the deer did not survive. the driver is expected to be ok. this device just approved by the fda could be a game changer for diabetics. it's an artificial pancreas the first of its kind. the device constantly monitors a person's blood sugar and delivers insulin as needed. right now, diabetics have to do that themselves, multiple times a day. the device has been approved for people with type 1 diabetes. erika: daycare costs more than college. a new report from a think tank called new america finds the average cost of full-time child care for a child up to age four is about $9600 a year. compare that to the average cost of in-state college tuition, that's about $200 less. in massachusetts, day care costs even more over $13,000 a year. randy: right now, all outdoor water use is banned in needham.
