>> from boston's news leader, this is wcvb newscenter 5 at noon. erika: we begin with breaking news. devastating hurricane winds sustained at 145 mile per hour shaking haiti this noon. heather: hurricane matthew reached the vulnerable island nation as a category four storm. heavy rain causing flooding all over the island. erika: this is a huge system, very powerful. slow-moving. mike, you have been watching the track of matthew. hurricane watch has been posted for parts of florida. mike: this is an incredibly

the entire caribbean, there is where we are focusing on. right near the island of espa?ol especially in the haiti area. cuba, just a little bit ways away is also going to be in line for more of that as we had through the afternoon. the eye of it is not as easy to find. you can see what it's doing now. because it is interacting with land you are hours earlier. it should be in guantanamo at about 8:00 tonight as a category four storm cuts to the bahamas. a very powerful storm. eventually toward the florida coast. this is thursday morning. this is friday morning. getting very close. after that it looks like it's headed for the carolina coast and may reemerge and begin to impact our weather as we talk about the weekend.

foot of rain in some areas. gio benitez is there >>. we are not out of the woods yet. the clouds you are seeing are from the edge of hurricane matthew. jamaicans are looking at this with guarded optimism. elizabeth: in cuba the forecast is calling for up to 40 inches of rain possible in parts of the island, enough to wash away entire villages. cubans are keeping busy boarding up buildings and filling sandbags. prep u.s. with a category four hurricane on the move now tracking west, threatening the east coast by the end of the week >>. if matthew directly impacts florida the destruction could be deadly. we are preparing for the worst and hoping for the best. elizabeth: hurricane watches in effect across parts of florida with states of emergency declared in florida and north carolina. >> the wind has been more so than we thought.

live early this morning. we then spoke to the director on the phone who described the wind and rain is coming in waves. he told us all the kids and staff are ok. he did say a main gate blew out of place but that was secured with chains. overnight family members of staff call for help worried about a rising river. they were brought to the orphanage building which was well-stocked and boarded-up ahead of the storm. plenty of diesel. plumbing, everything is working. the building is very secure. erika: outside the walls debris, parts of the roof, branches blowing around. about 80 miles east -- limiters east of where the worst of that storm is forecast to hit. you can track hurricane matthew on our news app. download them in the app store on apple and android.

erika: one person dead after a crash in melrose last night. police say a car hit a landscaping truck on howard street striking and killing a worker loading equipment. the car ran into an suv before rolling over landing on its roof . three people from the car were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the suv driver was not hurt. heather: police are investing a crash that involved an ambulance and two cars. this was the scene responding to a call interceding through a red light when it was hit by a car setting off a chain reaction. four people taken to the hospital, all expected to survive. a man accused of posing as it uber driver in holyoke and sexually assaulting a umass amherst student has been arrested for a second time. police arrested daniel texted her for failing to follow --

computer models. it brings it up and it keeps it about 100 or a little more than that, what hundred miles offshore. that would be good because it keep the wind offshore but give us the beneficial rain. look at the possibility that we could get some decent rain out of this whole thing before it moves out of here. still very uncertain about the track and intensity of the storm . i'm certain we will see ocean swells and rough surf. i'm not concerned about coastal flooding and the reason for that, astronomical he astronomically low tide. rain could start as early as saturday night focusing mostly on sunday at this point. look at how big this is, 500 miles across. that cone of uncertainty, 500 miles this way or that way is a big amount of an area. the actual center of this is right here. hurricane force wind and those beyond our about 45 miles away from center. the tropical storm force wind
