emily: good morning. it is friday, october 14th. i'm emily riemer. randy: i'm randy price. stories we're following right now at 4:30 on this friday on the eyeopener -- show of support for two boston police officers shot in the line of duty this week. the emotional tribute as those officers are recovering. emily: and we're learning new information about what behind it. the conversation his mother says happened just before the gunfire. randy: we have new poll numbers showing a slip for donald trump. the decline even before new sex assault allegations and the new response from hillary clinton over her private email server. emily: we will get to all of those stories. first want to check in with cindy for a first look at your forecast. a cool morning. cindy: and the wind is active.

the wind out of the north-northwest, sustained at 15, gusting higher along the coastline. definitely adding a chill to your morning. we've got mid 40's on the north shore out through worcester county, lots of lower 40's and a few 50's hanging on in the cape. definitely a chilly start this morning, and overnight tonight, frost and freeze warnings. temperatures will be much colder, near below freezing. an early heads-up. today, clear s tons of sunshine. and the winds will die down after we get through the morning hours. so this afternoon, lunchtime temperatures around 54. we are going to hold in the 50's to near 60. that is it. a much cooler today than what yesterday was all about. let's get you out to the roads. good morning, olessa. olessa: good morning, cindy, everyone. here is a check of the pike by alston-brighton, eastbound heading to the top of the screen. so far nice and light. let's get to the maps and see

south of town no problems on 24, route 3 or 95. pike looks good. road work clearing on 128, high land avenue. it's a quite start north of town. we're expecting trains and buses to start on schedule. that's a look at your traffic. >> there's no words. no words for what these g do every day -- guys do every day. randy: just how close he came to losing two of his officers this week. emily: they are still listed in critical condition. mayor walsh, commissioner evans joining dozens to pray for officers richard cintolo and matthew morris. they were saved after a dramatic shoot out with kirk figueroa. he was killed. captain kelley mccormick

>> we did everything within our capabilities to bring these guys home safe. when you shoot at officers, you're shooting at our community. whether it's my officer or just one of my people who live here, it's the same thing. it's hurting us. emily: officer morris lost massive amounts of blood when a bullet severed an artery in his leg. tonight there will be a vigil for the officers at 6:00 on randy: we now know why those officers were called to that home in east boston. a man had called 9-1-1 claiming his roommate had threatened him with a knife over a fight about using the thermostat. sources say that when officer richard cintolo arrived, he was shot as many as three or four times. the bullets missed his vital organs. officer matthew morris was hit

emily: right now, we're getting new details about the man accused of starting that firefight. kirk figueroa's mother says she called her son right before the hail of gunfire. yvonne says he got off the phone with a quick gotta go. 5 investigates found kirk figueroa had multiple aliases and started at least three companies in florida and other at the nation of islam after visiting ethiopia. he was a sworn constable in boston. kevin leary has held that job for 30 years and says figueroa's self-published biography could have raised red flags. >> he had various jobs in a quasi-law enforcement matter.

access the f.b.i. database. police did not know about figueroa's run-ins with the law in georgia and arizona. randy: other stories we're following this friday morning, these two suspects will be facing a judge today. they're charged with murdering and elderly man. brittany smith and joshua hart return to orange wednesday night after being arrested in virginia. they're accused of killing 95-year-old thoms harty inside his home last week and injuring still hospitalized. emily: an elderly man is fighting for his life after falling down newport's cliff walk. it's not clear how that man fell down. it happened 12:30 yesterday. crews strapped the man to a stretcher and slowly hauled him up the cliff. he was air lifted to rhode island hospital with serious injuries but was alert. randy: commitment 2016. new numbers painting a picture

candidate donald trump even as he's lashing out now at new sexual assault allegations. erika here with the new information this morning. erika: good morning. we're focusing on the battleground states that could go for either candidate and will swing this election. a new u-mass lowell poll gives hillary clinton a six-point lead over donald trump. it was done both before and after that "access hollywood" video and the second debate. also a public policy polling survey done only after events gives clinton and 11-point lead in the granite state. we should point out that poll was done for a democratic-leaning group. trump told a group in ohio last night the debates have been unfair. >> including giving the questions and answers to hillary clinton before a debate. i don't get them. i want them. i'm angry at the republicans. they don't get me the answers and the questions. erika: trump also called the

coordinated attack between the media and the clinton campaign. clinton responded to the accusations for the first time last night in california. >> the best way to rebuke the kind of campaign that the other side has run is by defeating my opponent and what he stands for and all -- erika: clinton will appear today on the ellen degeneres show. trump will be in north carol tomorrow. emily: hillary clinton has submitted written answers to questions about her private email server. clinton was ordered to answer questions from the conservative legal firm judicial watch which filed a freedom of information request. she responded 20 times that she couldn't recall information. clinton also claimed no one told her that keeping a private server was legally questionable. the candidates are gearing up for their final debate before the presidential election. that is wednesday in las vegas.

frost and freeze if you don't take cover with those plants or bring them inside. so just a heads-up on that. now, that is pretty much close to average over the interior. as you get along the coastline, it's usually early november until we get to our first frost. it could be early. all this cold is coming out of canada where the temperature in ottawa right now is 28 degrees. you can see we're still 49 in boston. but with a northerly wind today, that cool air is going to drain on down. we haveig down. skies are clear. we are going to have a sun-filled deep blue sky. it will be a beautiful looking day. just a little chillier than yesterday. a good stretch. we're in the mid 40's in beverly. we've got 46 in fitchburg. worcester 44 degrees. our typically colder pockets all running in the 40's this morning with 50's on cape cod. you look at these temperatures and think that's not so bad. the winds are active. gusting over 20 along the coastline. when you step outside this

stay up through lunchtime today and will settle back as we get into the afternoon. so it's a gusty breeze and temperatures stuck in the 50's boston south. you head up to the merrimac valley, metrowest, we may nudge 60 degrees. clear skies this evening. clear skies overnight as well. so things pretty quiet all and all. it's going to be chilly as mentioned. many spots are going to be in the 30's with upper 20's in we get in the day tomorrow, temperatures similar. it's the cooler weekend day. high pressure drops south sunday. milder temperatures are moving in. so near 60 on saturday. look at your sunday. near 70. how about that? with loads of sunshine and it looks like great weather for our patriots down at gillette as tom brady makes his return at home. great weather for tailgating. kickoff temperature about 66 degrees. a few showers in here early on

three days we're going to be at or above 70 degrees. a little warm-up. olessa: spring is making a quick return. live look at the expressway. there is a check by the south bay mall. the northbound side heading to the bottom of the screen. nice and light ride both ways. over to the maps. so far no problems to report on this friday morning. you're good to go making your way into boston. as you travel south, so far much of the same. expressway construction cleared. by the o'neill tunnel and so far the pike is nice and light as we still working some of that construction on 128 highland avenue for a couple of minutes. 95 south looking good. no troubles out of methuen into boston. trains and buses are starting the morning on schedule. emily: some changes are coming to the massachusetts health connector likely to cause confusion during next month's open enrollment. this has to do with eligibility and premium hikes. board members are warning more than 230,000 members to check their status and to shop around for better premium options.

people on mass health in 2013 without properly checking their status. randy: most of us can expect bigger bills to heat our homes this winter. energy analysts in washington are looking at the forecast, which calls for this winter to be colder than last. that means more need for home heat. higher prices across the board will occur. here's the prediction. if you have oil heat, you'll pay about 38% natural gas goes up 22%. about $116. electric heat will see the smallest spike, 5% or about $49. emily: your economy this friday morning, asian shares were higher overnight including thai stocks which surged following an ease of uncertainty after the death of that country's king. stock futures right now are higher. investors are awaiting the monthly treasury budget. that is due out today.

randy: good morning. it is 4:54. we have your early news to go. emily: two boston police officers in critical condition after they were shot in the line of duty. dozens gathered in east boston last night to pray for officers richard cintolo and matthew morris. they were shot responding to a domestic call wednesday night. they are both now out of surgery. they are recovering, but they do remain critical. they are expected to survive. the suspect was killed in that shoot-out. randy: several people after this 10-car crash. this is york, maine. a dumptruck tipped over and landed right on a car, leading to a pileup on route 1. people were trapped in their cars. they had to be pulled out by firefighters. york police say none of the injuries are life-threatening. emily: former massachusetts speaker sal dimasi could be released from prison earlier. federal prosecutors requested the sentence be reduced to time

randy: another zika transmission zone is confirmed in the greater miami area. florida's governor says five new cases were transmitted locally in the little river area. the cdc is again advising pregnant women not to travel anywhere near that neighborhood, which is just a one square mile area in miami. a gorilla scare at the london zoo. male silverback a lockdown. visitors were kept in the cafeteria as two employees used a tranquilizer and recaptured the gorilla. emily: the dodgers are heading to the national league championship. this was a nail-biter to the finish last night. two men on the ninth for the nationals. 4-3 the final. the dodger head to chicago to take on the cubs tomorrow in a best of seven series.

now, a slow start for the bruins in their season opener. down 2-0 in the second. that's when they turned on the jets. brad marchand with an incredible night. the b's skate away with the win 3-1. the bruins head to toronto tomorrow. what a way to start the season. randy: absolutely. cindy: we like the win. we will take it. yesterday, wow, we had some we did sneak up over 70 degrees. officially 72 in boston. was our warmest day this month. about 10 degrees above average. big difference today. we are cooling it off both today and tomorrow running below average. so a little bit chilly, but a nice recovery by the end of the weekend and a moderating trend. temperatures up and down. chillier air is coming in this morning from canada where it's only in the 20's and the 30's.
