at this time. but, yeah, it is cold out there. boston right now still hanging on in the lower 40's. so no frost in town, but there are frost advisories up here along the coastline and a freeze warning all the way back to 495. hopefully, you covered up those plants or brought them inside, because damaging temperatures outside this morning for sure. bedford below freezing. nashua 31. 20's from jaffrey to keene and orange. worces norwood, our cold pocket 28. 30 in taunton and 30 all the way down to the vineyard. cold temperatures this morning, but the skies are clear. high pressure is right on top of us. today's going to be a sun-filled beautiful day, so the temperatures will recover. and off to the west, there is much milder air. this is coming in here for tomorrow. so today is the cooler of the two weekend days. we'll see bright sunshine. sun up at 6:57. still in the 40's at 9:00 a.m., though.

we're only in the mid 50's and we're holding in the mid to upper 50's for highs today. maybe 60 degrees in a few spots. a cooler-than-average day ahead. a big warm-up on the day. antoinette: right now, one of the men who dove into the pond to save a crash victim is telling his story. he's among bystanders who jumped into action when that s.u.v. crashed into arlington spy doug: john atwater caught up with the rescuer in newton. >> he was very, very scared and had taken in water. she knew she was dying. she figured this is it. i saw that in her eyes. john: dan frazier knew he only had moments to act. he and two others jumped in the water trapped in her sinking car. >> i saw a woman in a car going down. and somebody had to help save her.

john: the first man out manages to open the backdoor, but the car sinks rapidly. it's 40 feet where it's going down. at one point they fear the worst. >> i lost her. i lost her. john: just then, the 68-year-old woman emerges. dan swims out to save her. >> and i could see her with such a frantic look in h john: that woman's husband says she confused the brake and gas pedals. he and his friend were spy pond. >> thanked us and prayed for the rescue. john: i did speak with that woman's husband. he says she is doing much better. she is expected home from the

antoinette: the convicted sex offender whose release sparked outrage has been arrested again. richard gardner moved back to weymouth last week after serving 30 years for kidnapping and raping several young boys in the late 1980's. neighbors feared he would offend again. he moved to a shelter in boston where he was arrested last night on a fugitive from justice charge that came out of rhode island. gardner is due in a boston courtroom on monday. doug: school available this morning after a student was killed in a crash. this happened in hyde park on american legion highway yesterday afternoon. the student's name has not been released. counselors will be available on monday. the crash remains under investigation. antoinette: a walk for peace in east boston, the community turning out to support two wounded police officers and each other. those officers are recovering this morning after they were shot responding to a domestic

newscenter 5's nichole berlie reports. >> you have brought the city of boston together. nichole: just feet from where two boston police officers were shot wednesday night. >> what happened here is devastating, especially for the people that we trust to protect us. nichole: this woman here with her 2-year-old son, her husband, a boston police officer. >> they put their lives at risk. we're here for the other officers. nichole: candles lit all over the city. >> i care about the community. i care about east boston in particular. i care about the boston police department. >> when people get in trouble, they call the police. and they're there for us. so we've got to be there for them. nichole: the gathering has a special meaning for tom, whose brother, robert, was killed in the line of duty in 2005.

this people. i know what they've been through in the way of not knowing if their loved one is alive or dead. nichole: show support and makes sure every officer goes home at the end of their shift. >> the community rallied against the officers and showing we're united, not only united, but united city goes a long way. nichole: commissioner evans says he was able to officers friday. as of friday, they were both listed in critical, but stable condition. in east boston, nichole berlie, wcvb newscenter 5. doug: the investigation into wednesday night's shooting continues. boston police removed at least eight bags of evidence from the home on gladstone street. and even show the shooter is already dead, prosecutors say more criminal charges may be filed. antoinette: a former congresswoman, gabrielle giffords, in boston to urge

tour. she became a gun advocate after she was not and nearly killed at a political event in phoenix. she says that caused her to look at gun-related violence in a very different way. >> stopping gun violence takes courage, the courage to do what's right, the courage of new ideas. i've seen great courage when my life as on the line. antoin: who support an assault weapons ban and other gun control measures. doug: today samsung galaxy note 7 phones will be banned from all airline flights. it follows nearly 100 cases of note 7's catching fire. samsung is no longer manufacturing the phone. now they are deemed too dangerous to take onboard a plane. passengers may be forced to give their phones up to security or face fines.

westward, we have freezing temperatures here. we've already had the growing season come to an end. along the coastline down on the cape and martha's vineyard, that's where we have a frost advisory. if you're thinking, okay, is this early, late? it's average. we find our average first freeze out through metrowest, 495 area, you know, around now, the 11th of october. early to mid october, that's where we are. typically after the month of boston. the city is 43 degrees. mid 30's on the north shore. below freezing in bedford and nashua. these temperatures are still falling. we're going to lose another couple of degrees in most areas. we're down to 39 in worcester. 20's jaffrey, keene and orange. 30 taunton. 30 in the vineyard this morning. 35 in hyannis. cold in the northeast, but look off to the west.

effort to fight climate change. more than 100 countries, including china, have agreed on a new deal to limit hydrofluorocarbons known as h.f.c.'s. the greenhouse gas is more powerful and destructive than carbon dioxide. the agreement reached after all-night negotiations. they were introduced as a substitute for ozone-depleting gases. antoinette: the the sarah mildred long bridge will be gone. department of transportation workers are using the high tide to help float the span to the state pier. doug: rhode island's governor wants the courts to release all of the documents from a grand jury investigation into curt schilling's failed video game company. the state decided against pursuing criminal charges after it lost $75 million in a deal that brought 38 studios to rhode

guilty. >> did the mental illness interfere with your ability to understand the proceedings? reporter: she was arrested after she kidnapped a then 2-year-old girl she used to babysit. >> nine days before the kidnapping, she searched the internet for various child kidnapping cases, the legal definition of kidnapping and how to find the kidnapper. reporter: the child was find alive last november on the side of the road naked, her head shaved wit marks on her body. >> it does not excuse the horror that she inflicted on the family. and the horror that she's inflicted on this family isn't abated just because the child was found. it really does maintain in large measure until this day. reporter: hanna's attorney believes strongly if mental health were not a significant portion of this case, hanna would not find herself in the

not suggesting that the case conforms truly to a not guilty. reporter: there were several conditions placed on her probation including she stays 100 yards away from the victim and her family. in salem. antoinette: disturbing new details in orange. joshua hart and brittany smith forced their way into the home of thomas harty and joanne fier 95-year-old man to death. they also allegedly tried to suffocate fisher with a pillow. prosecutors say the two suspects wanted to steal the elderly couple's car. >> they saw that there were people that lived in the home and their intention was to go in and rob those people, take money and take that car. and they armed themselves before they entered.

do know what it did to me. it made me black out, essentially pass out, stop breathing. doug: prosecutors asked for the maximum 2 1/2 years behind bars but the judge imposed the minimum sentence, one year probation. antoinette: new details after a major mistake at a worcester hospital. a kidney removed from the wrong patient. investigators say this past july, a surgeon at st. vincent hospital was supposed to remove a diseased kidney from a patient's identity and instead took a healthy kidney out of another patient who had the same name. the two patients had different date of births. investigators say the hospital should have noticed that. st. vincent says it is taking steps to prevent similar mistakes. doug: right now, police are searching for a man they say is a serial kidnapper. the suspect caught on camera. you can see him here in annalley wearing a cap and hooded

13-month-old anias and jadon mcdonald from illinois are living apart for the first time. surgery started thursday morning at montefiore medical center in the bronx and ended yesterday afternoon, more than 27 hours later, the boys' parents telling cnn it was hard to believe the day was here. >> it's not real. to me it's like another surgery from before. what's waiting in my stomach is we're into -- i call it the land of the unknown. doug: absolutely amazing. doctors say there is still a possibility of neurological issues, but both boys are recovering in a pediatric intensive care unit. they are the 59th pair to ever undergo this kind of surgery. announcer: now your stormteam 5

much later and in the city of boston, it's typically as we start the month of november. in town right now we're 43 degrees. but 30's elsewhere. below freezing bedford and nashua. you can see 20's showing up orange, keene and jaffrey. norwood down off route 1, it's chillier. 29 there. 30 in taunton. 30 on the vineyard. mid 30's from falmouth to hyannis right now too. it is cold across the northeast. but look to the west. you can see how muchil is. 53 in chicago. that is right now. there are some 60's on the map as well. that milder air is pushing in our direction. it's waiting for the high to get out of the way. it's sitting right on top of us. it's going to give us a clear beautiful day with blue skies and sunshine. it's starting out chilly. you can see the absence of cloud cover. you'll have wall-to-wall sunshine once the sun comes up close to 7:00 a.m. the winds are light. by 8:00 a.m., mid 40's. mid 50's by noontime.

sunny but on the cool side. temperatures holding mostly in the upper 50's to near 60 degrees although with that sea breeze, look at boston. 56 the best we do today. nowhere near that 72-degree reading. temperatures not going to be as cold. lots of 40's in the suburbs. a few of our coldest spots could be in the upper 30's. i'm not worried about frost. here comes milder air tomorrow with a southwesterly wind. mid 60's on cape. look at boston making a run towards 70. we may see l metrowest and the merrimack valley. it is going to be mild if you are headed to gillette for the patriots game. kickoff temperature 1:00 should be 67 degrees and we'll probably touch 70 over the course of that game. how about that for the middle of october? milder temperatures in place here through sunday. you can see there's a front to the north, limited moisture with this, but this will drop down as we head toward sunday night and early monday. that is our next chance of seeing any showers, but as mentioned, the moisture is very limited, so i really don't

you can see just the clouds coming in. a couple of scattered showers first thing early on monday morning, and then they move out. we will see the run re-emerging on monday afternoon and on into tuesday as well. look at these temperatures. low 70's on monday and perhaps touching 80 on tuesday. jet stream pushing some mild temperatures in our direction. in fact, we could be up near record highs. the record on tuesday for boston is 82 back in 1947, and we are going to be close. still hanging on to the warmth through wednesday and turning wetter it appears with unsettled pattern setting up and we need the rain by the end of the week. doug and antoinette? doug: cindy, thank you. 5:50 is your time. some of the other stories happening right now. antoinette: two police officers are shot in separate incidence in two different states. we begin in san francisco, california. a man under arrest for shooting an officer. police say that officer was grazed by the bullet and is expected to survive. and a suspect is dead after a shootout in dallas, texas. police stumbling on a shooting

on the officer. the officer fired back, killing the shooter. the officer is recovering after being shot in the foot. doug: it's a working weekend for jurors in georgia. prosecutors argue computer searches on justice harris' computer that he allegedly used the keywords child 3. they say the searches reflect his intent. harris was texting with several that hot car. antoinette: cleanup is underway in oregon after a tornado strikes the beach town of manzanita. the rare west coast twister damaged homes and businesses. it touched down friday morning and left a path of destruction right through town. doug: 5:51. the patriots are back at gillette preparing for a showdown with the cincinnati bengals. and tickets for tomorrow's game

cindy: good saturday morning to you. we have to wait an hour for the sun to come up. the sky is clear. it is cold. 42 in boston. but over the interior, look at that. upper 20's to around 30 degrees, and out in worcester right now, it's 38. look at the slow temperature recovery. by 8:00 a.m., we're still in the 30's. then it's only in the mid and upper 50's for high temperatures this afternoon. today definitely the cooler
