>> from boston's news leader, this is wcvb newscenter 5 news at noon. emily: we begi a pregnant mother and her three children struck by a car in hopkinton. it happened on hayden rowe street in a crosswalk. doug: what do we know about their condition? reporter: doug and emily, they were taken to the hospital. we spoke to the police chief for short time ago. they are expected to be ok. that is the good news. the chief reiterating what you

that was stopped for the pedestrians in the crosswalk. the vehicle that was rear-ended was pushed into the crosswalk. again, you have one vehicle that stopped at the crosswalk. a second vehicle comes up behind it and rare and, pushing that first vehicle into the crosswalk , striking that pregnant mother and her three children. they were all rushed to the hospital and one of the drivers also taken to the hospital. witnesses on scene describe a pretty the mother was pregnant. she had presence of mind to tend to her children. witnesses came running out of their houses, tending to her. this is still an active investigation. no charges have been filed. the chief says they will be stepping up patrols because there are a lot of pedestrians and this is a street where people tend to speed.

newscenter 5. emily: more breaking news -- a federal judge says he needs more information before making a decision on whether former house speaker sal dimasi should be granted a compassionate release from prison. last week, prosecutors recommended dimasi be released. he is battling cancer, and has served nearly 5 years of an 8-year sentence for corruption. the judge wants that additional information by the end of the month. doug: also breaking this noon -- lawrence police now have a murder investigation on their hands, after a man shot last night died this morning. 34-year-old jorge viscaino of lawrence was found in an alley behind haverhill street suffering a he was transported to beth israel where he he died from those wounds. no word on any arrests. right now a convicted sex offender whose release sparked outrage is being held without bail. newscenter 5's nicole estephan reporting richard gardener will be heading back to rhode island to face new charges. she joins us live from roxbury district court. nicole: doug, the allegation is

extradition this morning. he walked into court, covering his face the entire time. he was arrested on a fugitive from justice charge last week, taken from a homeless shelter he had moved into. he failed to notify the quincy library of his status as a level three sex offender. he was released from prison on october 3 after serving 28 years for the kidnapping and rape of young boys in the 1980's. >> he has nowhere to go. if he is supposed to go to the end of cape cod and keep walking, at some point we all have to decide what we are doing to people that are the untouchables. he served his sentence, a long sentence. nicole: gardner will be held without bail. we are live in roxbury, nicole estaphan, wcvb newscenter 5.

plea to the community for information after her 2-year-old grandchild is shot in roxbury. newscenter's sera congi reports, the shooting took place in broad daylight. sera: the two-year-old toddler is doing better and is home from the hospital according to her grandmother who is calling on the community to come forward with information. the shooting took place in broad daylight, shattering glass in a passenger window of a car on winslow street in roxbury saturday, inside the vehicle a two-year-old girl, hit in the police believe her father was the intended target. her grandmother is now urging witnesses to come forward, brenda peeples -- brenda peoples tells the globe, people should be willing to speak up and say whatever they saw. i just feel people don't want to speak because they may be targeted. the shooting saturday is the second child to fall victim to

playground outside a family function at 1:00 a.m. the grandmother in the most recent shooting says i wish the , young people, the youth around here, would take life a little more seriously. boston police say the toddler's father who is known to be gang related is not what rating with the investigation. sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. doug: thank you. a 19-year-old is expected in court today, accused in a triple stabbing in new hampshire. terrence simmons junior of newport, rhode island was arrested yesterday, after a 14-hour manhunt. police say he stabbed three men yesterday morning in plymouth, new hampshire. the complex serves as off-campus housing for plymouth state university. two of the victims are students there. all 3 are expected to survive. emily: right now, a fire that caused close to a million dollars in damage on boston's newbury street is under investigation. flames broke out on the first floor of a four-story brownstone last night. there is significant damage to an art gallery on the first floor, and a restaurant in the basement. at this point, no word on how

edward m. kennedy institute in dorchester. thursday he'll head up to nashua, new hampshire to campaign for clinton. also today the mbta will discuss , a string of green line trolley derailments. the meeting follows a state audit. the audit found seven derailments last year, and 5 this year. including this one in may. "the globe" reports that number is higher than any other light rail system in the country. the audit blamed failure to maintain tracks and trolley wheels. an mbta spokesperson says the emily: a tribute in light to the two police officers shot in east boston last week. the prudential tower shining blue for officer richard cintolo and officer matt morris. the two men remain hospitalized in critical but stable condition. the man who shot the officers was killed during a gun battle with police. doug: a 12-year-old girl is being credited with saving the lives of four women who

>> you are watching newscenter 5 at noon. emily: right now a major military offensive underway is in iraq. the iraqi military is carrying out an assault against isis to take back the key city of mosul. it's the second largest city in iraq and a vital stronghold for the terror group. u.s. troar involved in the fighting but they are providing logistical support to the iraqis. the us-led coalition is carrying out airstrikes as well. about a million people are expected to leave the city to escape the fighting creating a potential humanitarian crisis. doug: 21 schoolgirls held captive for 2 1/2 years by boko haram are finally free. they were released to their parents yesterday. this is the first negotiated release between the nigerian government and the islamic extremist group.

back in april 2014. 197 girls remain captive. emily: at least 23 people are dead after an airstrike in a rebel-held village in northern syria. activists monitoring the violence say the attack happened earlier today in aleppo. the group is blaming russian warplanes for the strike. aleppo has been the center of violence in syria over the last week. doug: fbi director james comey says the lack of reliable data about how often police use force is fueling the narrative about law enforcement. he says videos of fatal police encounters contribute to the belief that biased police are killing black men at epidemic rates. comey says the theory creates a deep level of mistrust. the fbi is now moving forward with a database to track information about police use of force. emily: a dramatic rescue caught on camera in florida. police say a driver caused a two-car crash before his vehicle ended up down an embankment in palm bay. this was the scene yesterday,

witnesses and police tried to get the man out. eventually he was pulled to safety and people nearby formed a human chain to help pull him up the embankment. police say the man is expected to recover. a close call on the water, caught on camera. watch as the wave hits the boat, tipping it over nearly hitting two surfers off california's ventura beach. the boat capsized when it hit a sandbar. no one was seriously hurt. harbor patrol officers are investigating and they say this was likely reckless operation. of the price tag to clean up from hurricane matthew. in north carolina, it is expected to cost more than one -- $1.5 billion. nearly 100,000 buildings and homes are damaged. and remnants of a pacific typhoon packed a powerful punch in the northwest. from northern california to the canadian border, trees were snapped by strong winds. some came down on cars and across roads and power lines, leaving thousands without power.

right? cindy: yeah, look at the damage. another system coming on him. pretty active in the pacific northwest. doug: not here. cindy: on the flipside. look at the temperatures across the corner. the eastern two thirds of the country are very warm for this time of year. 71 all the way back to chicago and you can see st. louis is in the 80's. these are current temperatures. unusually warm for the middle of going to cheap feeding that on end. it gets warmer into wednesday. and the record is 82 tomorrow. and we are going to be close to that number. you can see a lot of blue sky out there right now. clouds of send on out. the winds are pretty light. over the next couple of days, not only are you going to feel

temperatures in the lower 70's on the cape. we have managed 75. north shore in the 70's. nashua up to 73. and in worcester, it is 73 degrees. that is up at the airport. what i want you to notice is what happens. by 6:00 this evening in the worcester area there is a chance there could be a couple of sp you can see the clouds weakening in the western part of the state. what this is is a frontal boundary. it will start to lift back and this is sitting to our northwest. clouds will increase. temperatures will drop to either side of 60 degrees.

emily: that's good. doug: also there is this -- a special delivery along the mass pike. a framingham woman went into labor yesterday, but the baby just couldn't wait. the couple pulled over near the allston-brighton tolls, and trooper joe hilton pictured here was first on scene. he helped the family until the ambulance arrived, and the baby boy was delivered. both mom and the newborn are doing just fine. i understand the baby paper toll. [laughter] emily: we were talking earlier they will have to call him joe alston -- cindy: you know?
