to run normally today, but there are questions about why this happened. look a cell phone video from passengers showing the chaos. smoke filling the station and the orange line train as it pulled away from back bay station just before 5:00 last night. passengers pushed out windows to escape. this morning we know an overheated motor caught fire, triggering a trash fire on the rails. that caused all the smoke. one woman shows how she used her chef's knife like so and out into the window. >> people, naturally, started to scream for help and tried to pry the doors open. they wouldn't budge. >> the mbta police say the operator made the right decision not to open the doors because people would have jumped onto a live third rail. the t says the operator was working on helping passengers out safely, but there was no announcement, so many people

hands. three people were taken to the hospital, but no one was seriously hurt. mechanics are trying to figure out exactly why that motor overheated. live at back bay station, sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. >> this is not the first time we have seen something like this on the t. it's not just riders who are fed up. last year, panicked commuters busted out of a red line train in quincy amid spoke smokey conditions. this scene and the orange line incident paralyzing the commute. city officials to overhaul the aging system. boston city council president michelle woo tweeting how often does this have to happen before mbta makes real plan and investments to fix infrastructure? boston mayor marty walsh agreeing a fix is urgent. >> we need investment in mbta. we need revenue. >> the mayor plans to follow up

passenger safety is a top priority. >> boston police are investigating after this s.u.v. slams into a home. the eye's antoinette antonio on beacon hill this morning where we are getting new information about the driver involved in that. >> and, randy, that uber driver along with the passenger are recovering this morning. right now you can see the building here on beacon hill at the corner of myrtle and grove streets is boarded up. that driver, jn caillot's wife confirms he was driving for uber and tells us he is home from the hospital. caillot and his passenger were treated for injuries after the crash yesterday. that s.u.v. barrelling right down grove street into the building, sending bricks tumbling down. some witnesses say they can't believe no one was killed. >> i heard a boom down that end. i see this car come flying up the street.

boston. police say karen edwards stabbed collin edwards to death earlier this month. she underwent a competency evaluation ahead of today's hearing. >> right now there are extra police patrols after a woman was groped on a well-traveled bike path in marblehead on the north shore. police say the victim was taking a walk yesterday morning when a man on a bike and wearing a face mask exposed himself and then tried to grab her. she then called 911. police searched for that suspect for hours after the incident, but that search has been suspended at this point. the area where this happened is just steps from the tower school. >> mit wants to fund the next big idea. the school looking to raise $150 million for a new venture capital fund. that fund will be called engine and it will support start-up companies in biotech, clean energy, and robotics. the university planning to offer

>> this morning cambridge is looking to limit airbnb's business in that city. the herald is reporting the city council held a hearing on the short-term rental market and critics complained the service is pricing out longer term renters. proposed regulations would limit rentals that are less than 30 days to owner occupied buildings only and only the owner or leaseholder would rent out a unit for less than there are about 2,000 airbnb listings in cambridge. >> i just figured those are pretty sensitive. so i decided to go to town on them. >> a terrifying encount we are a shark off the oregon coast. joe tanner describes how the shark pulled him under the water. he says he started punching to escape. fortunately, nearby surfers saw him struggling and pulled him to

>> yeah. you know what? halloween on monday is looking pretty good around here for trick-or-treaters. it's going to be chilly. hard to believe it was 81 degrees last week. the past couple of days being so cold. we've got a freeze warning away from the coastline, a frost advisory at the coast this morning. it is cold out there again. temperatures just in the 20s right now. 31 worcester. 34 boston. 31 in plymouth curren in the day on the south shore and cape. there's a system to our west, good slug of rain, snow right now across parts of central new york state into northeastern pennsylvania. there will be snow with this as it comes into the berkshires and the mountains of northern new england you can see snow, about one to 3 inches in western massachusetts. storm will bring wind overnight.

there's a wind advisory for that region. clouds thicken and along the coast maybe drizzle. here comes the area of snow into the berkshires at lunchtime. raining here by late afternoon into the evening hours. could be flakes in the worcester hills. look at the yellows and oranges. these are downpours, even a rumble of thunder. it gets out of here tomorrow morning. big puddles commute. looks like rainfall around an inch from this system. it's very windy, especially in the morning. saturday looks like the pick day of the weekend with maybe just some building clouds. as we head toward halloween on monday, it does look like we have a dry day with sunshine. so trick-or-treat time temperatures near 50, dropping to the 40s as the kids are out. but it looks dry on monday with a warming trend. we could be around 60 by the middle of next week. let's get you to the roads.
