now saying it looks like one of the engines suffered catastrophic failure. breaking apart as the plane sped down the runway toward takeoff. passengers ran for their lives. panic inside this boeing 767 as passengers raced for the exits. but once they get outside, you see why. the fire from the right engine landing gear, the wing, flames moving toward the windows. >> the fire is right up against the window, and it's melting the windows. people are starting to panic like it's crazy, jumping over each other, it's chaos. today is the day i thought i was going to die. >> passengers say this wide body plane with 170 passengers and crew aboard bound for miami was speeding down the runway. suddenly, an explosion. >> we didn't get in the air and

engine blew. >> initially the faa said a tire blew. but american now says no, a mechanical problem with the engine is to blame. a federal official telling the a.p. the plane experienced what's known as uncontained engine failure when the engine breaks apart. but this is not an old plane. one of the newest 767s in american's fleet, it entered service in 2003. everybody was so professional. the pilots stopped the plane exiting. it was all kind of coordinated chaos, but it was unbelievable, how we got off that plane. ben: 20 passengers and a flight attendant suffered minor injuries from sliding down those escape chutes. this will be investigated closely because those engine failures are very rare and very serious and they have to make sure it's not a problem that could affect other 767s. maria? maria: there's another plane fire to show you tonight.

wcvb newscenter 5. ed: breaking news just in from new hampshire. a man accused of kidnapping his girlfriend and driving her to massachusetts has been arrested. police thatted a search warrant out for that man. police in londonderry say 22-year-old victor rosario dragged his girlfriend out of work yesterday afternoon and drove off with her. they were found in worcester, the victim was not hurt. we reported last night that rosario was released while police continued to investigate. a rochester, new mp who pleaded guilty to giving a teenager a deadly does of fentanyl learned his fate today. mark ross will spend the next 20 years in a federal prison. 17-year-old eve tarmey was found dead in rochester motel room last year. her mother, who was also in that motel room, also pleaded guilty as well, and will be sentenced in december. maria: right now, a search underway in brookline for a man who allegedly exposed himself to three young girls. our diane cho is live in brookline tonight. and diane, you're hearing there was a similar incident there. just last month? diane: police are searching

baker administration is calling for changes that would take away the arrest power of constables. following the shooting of two boston police officers by a boston constable earlier this month. 5 investigates uncovered the case of salem constable darryl hines. he wears a uniform with stars on the collar and drives a vehicle that looks similar to a cruiser. hines is actually charged with impersonating a police officer and including buying glock handguns only allowed for police. hines is fighting those charges. constables can legally arrest a person despite having no required training. the state is now scrutinizing those powers found in laws based on statutes that are centuries old. >> they had extensive powers. in fact, in a lot of ways, they have the same powers as the police officers. in fact, they could rescue on
