windy and chilly. and that chilly weather lasts through the second half of the weekend as well. we're breaking it down for you right now as the eyeopener continues. announcer: now on newscenter 5's eyeopener. randy: america making its choices today and the presidential candidates push their campaigns to the last second. overnight pleas to voters. emily: a major senate race with impacts well beyond new hampshire. the factor making this granite state decision owe cr mean major changes in massachusetts. the questions on the ballot on the eye for this election day. announcer: you're watching wcvb, boston's news leader. good morning. this is newscenter 5's eyeopener. randy: the countdown is on. the polls open in just two hours here in massachusetts. good morning. thank you for joining us. i'm randy price. emily: i'm emily riemer. there is a lot on the line in today's election. we will get to all of it.

cindy: skies mainly clear. boston 39 degrees. winds are light. no big wind chills out the door. it is cold, though, a lot of 20's in the suburbs north of town. you can see from bedford to nashua, just 27 degrees. beverly 30. there's frost out there. you may need time to scrape the windshield off this morning. upper 30's in worcester. 30's this morning on cape cod. it's a cold, clear start. high pressure nosing in. this is going to give us sunshine pretty much all day come up. out of the 20's and 30's this morning. we should be in the mid 40's here by midmorning in boston and we're in the 50's lunchtime on into the afternoon. temperatures will nudge up to around or just over 60 degrees today. well above average for this time of year. average high is 55. lower 60's boston to norwood. nice and mild for election day. this is it. temperatures go down into tomorrow.

today, the eyeopener has all the candidates and issues covered for you. sera is covering the clinton campaign in battleground new hampshire. sera: certainly a battleground, randy and emily. polls open here in less than an hour. hillary clinton has spent a lot of time in the granite state. overnight, she spent time in another important state holding a midnight rally in north carolina. >> there is no are not ahead of us. [cheers and applause] if we reach for them together. sera: earlier in the might, bruce springsteen joining hillary clinton. she was joined on-stage by president obama and the first lady and john bon jovi. pennsylvania, new hampshire, virginia, all considered about a

hillary clinton will be voting in new york. polls open at 6:00 a.m. sera congi, wcvb newscenter 5. randy: ready to go. thanks, sera. from manchester we head south to nashua. the eye's nicole estaphan is covering the trump campaign. nicole: good morning, randy. the trump campaign also burning the midnight oil in the final hours of this race after a stop here in new hampshire last night. the candidate flew to michigan for an overnight rally. chance to beat this corrupt, rigged system and to deliver justice for every forgotten man and forgotten woman and forgotten child. nicole: at his rally last night, trump claimed tom brady called to say he voted for the nominee. he also read a letter he said was from pats coach bill belichick.

we're live in nashua, new hampshire, nicole estaphan, wcvb newscenter 5. emily: thank you. our political analysts have seen a lot in their time in politics and here's what they will be watching for today. >> north carolina and new hampshire, the polls close at 7:30 and 8:00 p.m. these battleground states, if trump wins both, we could be in for a long night. second, the romney states. romney got his clock cleaned by obama in electoral votes. if trump loses any one of these states, he's done. third, african american turnout. so far it's not been great for hillary clinton in early voting. if it's down again, it could be a good night for trump. >> three things to watch -- pennsylvania, new hampshire, and michigan. there's no early voting. all three states are a factor in who wins the white house. emily: some of the first votes in new hampshire are already in this morning.

dixville notch, one of three small communities that voted at midnight. hillary clinton took dixville notch with four votes and hart's location with 17. trump won nearby millfield with 16 votes. dixville notch has picked the winner in three of the last four contests. randy: tight race in new hampshire as democrat maggie hassan hopes to unseat republican kelly ayotte there. and the eye's erika tarantal granite state voters. erika: the race one of the most closely watched in the country. also one of the most expensive. both candidates out in full force to convince voters why they're right for new hampshire. >> there is a clear choice in this election. do we keep going with a senator who repeatedly votes with the special interests or a new senator who sides with the

working hard for them. i'm one of the most bipartisan records. i'll stand up as that independent voice for the people of new hampshire and fight for them. erika: the outcome of this race could determine the balance power in the senate. there are eight seats up for grabs. the democrats could gain the majority there. as for the house, real clear politics gives the repca leaning gop. the democrats have 190 with only 21 toss-ups. the house should remain under republican control. randy? randy: massachusetts voters are making decisions today on four statewide ballot questions. and the eye's doug meehan is in boston with a closer look at what's at stake today as we head to the polls. doug: hey, randy, good morning. yes, as you mentioned, voters are considering four different

dollars are being weighed when these ballots go forward. and a lot of the money coming from out of state. let's break them down. question 2, charter schools. question 3 deals with confining farm animals. a yes vote bans any practice from preventing them from standing up, question 4 will decide if recreational marijuana becomes legal. younger voters favor legalization which means voter turnout will have a big impact on the outcome. there's also question 1, a yes vote here would authorize the massachusetts gaming commission to award a second parlor, but it is very specific, an area near suffolk downs in revere is the only area that fits the

massachusetts' newspapers rarely agree, but they do on question 2. they agree opponents have run a "campaign of misinformation" to spread "fear through white, affluent neighborhoods." they agree in the suburbs question 2 will have "no impact on their schools and their children." vital "choices for urban parents" and help reduce "the achievement gap." question 2 is "a kid's civil right." join leading newspapers and governor baker

it will be nice. typically election day weather can affect turnout at the polls. nationwide, quiet. along the gulf coast, texas into louisiana, moisture up to the chicago area, and that's about it. otherwise, it is mainly dry and really warm. the jet stream is pushing some of that warmth in our direction today, but it does not last because we're going to start to trend cooler again as we go toward the end of the week. an average high for us is now just 54 degrees in early 60's. still above that tomorrow. look what happens here thursday into friday. cooler than average. cooler still as we head toward the upcoming weekend. changeable temperatures and look at these reading this morning. there is a lot of frost. you're going to want to allow extra time, warm up the car or bring the ice scraper. it's only in the 20's from bedford in nashua. 24 orange. south of town from norwood to taunton down to new bedford, we're running in the 20's. 39 worcester on into boston right now.

it's a chilly start but skies are clear. we have high pressure nosing in. this is going to give fantastic weather across the northeast. big storm offshore moving away. the winds have calmed down. we mentioned showers around the chicago area. this is the front we are watching for us tomorrow. this will come through with scattered showers. not any widespread heavy soaking rainfall, but there will be some showers starting around tomorrow. so today looks good. notice all the sunshine. polls open at 7:00 a.m. still some by midday it's up around 60. quite a jump up here as we get toward the midday hour. as the polls close, upper 40's to 50 degrees. as warm as 64 in norwood. 61 in worcester. lawrence 63. upper 50's on cape cod today. a few clouds come in this evening. overnight those clouds start to thicken up. it's not going to be nearly as

as the front comes through and the area of low pressure develops along it, that may enhance moisture across southeastern massachusetts where there could be more than 1/4 inch of rain. elsewhere 1/10 inch. nothing real heavy wednesday. out the door, some showers around. the midday hours, it shifts into southeastern massachusetts. once the front moves through, the winds shift around bringing in the cooler air, clearing skies thursd i friday night. coldest air of the entire season. wind chills probably won't get out of the 30's all day long on saturday. olessa: so far this morning, no problems on the roads. expressway by the south bay mall looks good. northbound toward the bottom of the screen. let's see the rest of your ride. issue-free heading out the door right now. all the construction we are watching is gone. you're in good shape into boston and south, expressway road work

up by route 24. no issues on 128. we had overnight construction. that's gone. the pike is a 15-minute ride. north of there, construction gone on route 3. trains and buses starting on schedule. emily: a georgetown police officer is recovering after a crash in rowley. that officer was working a detail on 95 north. that officer with nonlife-threatening injuries. the driver did stay on the scene and no charges have been announced. right now six young people are facing charges after a violent confrontation with police in cambridge. police forced to use pepper spray to get a crowd under control at the cambridgeside galleria. an estimated 1,000 people were there for a meet and greet with rapper desiigner and celtics rookie jaylen brown. fans waiting for hours for that 5:30 event.

say things got out of control. bricks and glass thrown at officers. pepper spray dispersed. some witnesses say there should have been a better plan for police to gain control. >> there's a better way to control a crowd. as a result, everyone had to suffer. emily: those six teens charged with trespassing, disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace. randy: your economy for this tuesday morning. asian shares were mixed investors await the results, with the rest of us, of today's presidential election in this country. stock futures here are lower right now. cutting back on losses for boston's lawn on d. the popular outdoor park on d street will have a deficit this year between 250 and 350 thousand dollars, much lower than the $2.3 million loss in its second season last year. the massachusetts convention center authority says lawn on d

2018 thanks to increased commissions and more private events. the mbta is working forward a more reliable future for the orange line. t managers plan to increase rider capacity by 40% by adding new cars by 2019. now, in the meantime, the t is testing a short-term drop back system involving a two-person inspection of the train cars on the end of the line that is designed to cut down time between trains allowing more trains per hour. emily: the t is also moving forward with itsre extension project. it's named the new project manager, john dalton, a chicago-based construction manager. he will oversee the $2.3 billion project which extends the green line by nearly 5 miles into medford and somerville. the management team is a requirement of the federal transit administration, which is giving a billion dollars in federal aid. three malden high school students win a dress code battle. those students addressed the school committee last night challenging a ban on head wraps

the students argued the wraps are not disruptive and are associated with both religious values and cultural expression. school committee voted unanimously to overturn the ban. >> they made a cogent argument, and that's what we teach in the classroom. >> i knew it was going to get changed eventually, because it is something that should not be in the hand book to begin with. i thought it was going to take a really long time. emily: the mayor called the reversal a vic the dress code will be modified in writing next year. randy: a salad dressing disaster and a surprise in an overhead luggage compartment. what the surprise was in eyepoppers this morning. erika: new at 5:30, a tribute to war heroes. the annual event helping to heal the wounds of battle. also, an eccentric heir under suspicion. the new case against a man once questioned in the disappearance of his wife.

closely. democratic candidate maggie hassan and republican kelly ayotte are locked in a heated senate ballot. the num governor trying to unseat the gop incumbent. this could help determine the balance of power in the u.s. senate. real clear politics averages show there are eight seats up for grabs. so democrats could gain a majority. again, this race has been very tight. doug? doug: we're in jamaica plain. in massachusetts, all eyes are on the ballo question 2 expands charter schools in the state. question 3 bans the confining of farm animals so they can't stand or move around. and question 4 would legalize recreational marijuana. worth noting, more than a million people have already voted in massachusetts. if you haven't voted yet, polls like this open at 7:00 a.m. live in jamaica plain.
