we have a preview of those stories. first a look at downtown cleveland and what a look it is. a gorgeous morning with a beautiful sunrise here. hello, good morning to the saturday morning good day cleveland. weekend warmups are back after that cold weekend last weekend. we're back in the game right now with warmer temperatures shaping up for the day. >> we are back in the game fully in charge. we're winning today all day long. upper 50s to lower 60s with not a cloud in the sky. today i am just going to make you smile and it's almost going to be feeling like spring across the area as march 20th definitely nears. but we are at february 20th. nearly a month away before the official start to spring. and man, you're going to enjoy today. you can see just a few tracks of snow out towards lake county

that snowstorm we saw earlier this week today. around downtown you'll noticed puddles as our temperatures are warming up. greater cleveland area, currently at 46 degrees, coshocton into millersberg currently at 48 degrees at the 8:00 hour. going to continue to get better but what you're going to notice is the breeze. i mean these winds want to chatter and be large and in charge, sustained winds, constant wind speed of 25 to 30 miles per hour, local gusts throughout your afternoon up to 40. the great news is that they really start to subside as we head into your evening hours. so a lot going on around town if you're out and about. we are not tracking any moisture for your saturday as our live 5 radar are only picking up a few clouds

shann pain to sinni, some cloud coverage, but here is bright sunshine. i'm tracking a little bit of rain and the cooldown for sunday, a high of 41. we are labelling this a get out and enjoy day for sure. new this morning, three people recovering after a bad crash in akron. it happened at kl 8:30 last night. two cars were involved with five people total, three were injured badly enough to be taken to a local hospital. earlier in the evening, another accident, this one ending much worse. two people are dead after a crash on state route 619 in lexington township. they are leland wright and aubrey wright. neither were wearing seat-belts. >> we have a witness traveling eastbound who said the chevy impala passed him at a high rate of speed. the impala moved back into the eastbound lane, lost control, went

a pole and overturned. >> this is stark county's fourth and fifth fatal crash so far this year. the race to the white house is heating up. today voters in two states, including south carolina, will head to the polgs and caucuses for parts of their primary election. meg shaw is tracking the latest from the candidates and it will be shaping up to be a very important day. meg, today actually could be the end of the road for some presentation hopefuls. >> reporter: the republican candidates scrambled to cover as much ground as possible in south last on the road to the white house. right now donald trump is leading in the palmetto state polls but ted third. jeb bush, some say if he doesn't do road. his mom and former first lady barbara bush spent her friday stumping for her son. john kasich says it isn't about

the money that would normally go to planned parenthood would go to health clinics selected by the ohio department of health. more funding news this time encouraging developments from the feds. $97 million in funding is being made available to the state of ohio to rid our neighborhoods of vacant buildings. the money is coming from a treasury department fund that aims to help states hit hardest by the housing crisis in 2008. a second phase could make $250 million available if there is still need. and keeping with news around ohio this morning, after 37 years, a woman's shoplifting case made to a judge. rachelle cooper was first charged with shoplifting back in 1979. a warrant was issued for her arrest but she was never found. that is, until last month when she was picked up for shoplifting again. they discovered the decades old warrant and contacted her original lawyer. it seems all the time that passed actually worked out into the now 60-year-old's favor.

investigating -- child services are investigating. they've never been called to her home before. happening today, the life of supreme court justice antonin scalia will be celebrated. 3,000 people paid tribute yesterday at the supreme court and today hundreds more will attend his funeral. vice-president joe biden and his wife jill are among the dignitaries expected to attend. he passed away this week at the age of 79. president obama will spend part of his weekend reviewing nominees to fill the vacant spot left by scalia. he was carrying a binder on candidates out of the oval office yesterday. the one person who decides whether the pick gets the nomination, he will wait until the name is announced to make any decisions.

from orville into wayne county, cooler, 44. not tracking any moisture today but you can see a few clouds that are tracking in out towards geauga lake. columbus dealing with cloud coverage. high pressure is on top of us. lots of sunshine as we head into your mid-afternoon. well towards our east, they're dealing with a good snowstorm from maine all the way into the boston area, well towards our north that colder air and a little bit of snow is not entering our area. what we're dealing with is a south flow and that's what's allowing for the warmup. from nashville into jackson, they're into the lower 60s. that warmer air is tracking in for your saturday. but it's going to quickly change

that is going to provide a little bit of a cooldown going into your sunday. so look at this cooler air from omaha into chicago. lower 30s, mid-40s. that will track in here as we head into your sunday. let's soak up all this sunshine by 3:00, 60 degrees, but please notice the sustained winds, that's a constant wind speed, 15 to 20 miles per hour, expect some gusts up to 45. taking a look at our futurecast for winds, the great news as you're stepping out and about tonight, they really subside, and really deteriorate going into the rest of the weekend. the cooldown comes. 52, so we won't be hitting any records today, probably just shy of that of 68 for today. so nearly 5 to 7 degrees shy of that. but still, very much on the mild side. not a cloud in the sky.

cleveland area, all of our viewing area going to love everything about today. bright sunshine, upper 50s to near 60 degrees in most areas. winds. they've been chattering all night long from parma getting reports to about 46 miles per hour, finland up track in here. at that, wayne county, 44 and that's the cold spot. greeter cleveland downtown currently at 350 degrees. out toward ravenna, canton into the lower 40s. we'll continue to warm up. hold on to your hat as we're dealing with a breeze coming out of the south to 15 to 25 miles per hour. that's what's allowing for the gradual warmup throughout your afternoon. could see potential gusts to 40.

like that from them. to set them up, this is entrapment, this is a setup. >> cleveland police say all of these cases are turned over to ohio liquor control, repeated violations could cause a location to lose its liquor license. the ohio epa this week disciplined three workers in connection with lead contamination issues. now there are questions about the urgency of the situation in sebring. deadlines were missed to notify the community about the lead. but city leaders say the epa wasn't cheer until last month that there really was an emergency. >> didn't indicate really anything to an administrator like myself that there is an immediate problem that needs to be dealt with now. >> 50 out of 54 samples were below the allowable limit for lead.

. good morning, everyone. this is february 20th and look at that, green grass. spring fever today, we are talking about upper 50s to lower 60s on february 20th. we have to deal with the winds out of south. you can see from akron up to 13 miles per hour. they will continue to gust up to 40 thought your afternoon, but that's the only thing you're going to have to deal with. that's what's allowing for the gradual warmup that we're currently seeing.

. welcome back. 8:45 on your saturday morning. three people died just in the past month alone after drivers drove into traffic the wrong way. wrongway crashes nationwide have led to 4,000 deaths in the past decade of the one local fire chief has a simple solution that would prevent these crashes from happening again. steve nash says stop sticks are the answer to stopping this growing problem. >> can we engineer the problem out of it?

sunshine, not a cloud in the sky, and it's february 20th! you're looking at green grass. 350 degrees downtown cleveland and hour. temperatures well above normal. our normal hoe for this time of year is 24. so, wow, warmer air definitely surging in. 48 out in the parma area, bedford into the upper 40s. taking a look at barberton, temperatures are going to warm up for the rest of the day. our radar showing high pressure is on top of us and that is what is loug for all -- ahow long for all this good -- allowing for all this goodness on top of us. that will be the case for today. we should be in the clear for a lot of sunshine.

boston area, they're dealing with snowy conditions, that wintry mix, and well towards our north we're dealing with cooler weather from north bay into canada, dealing with a lot of snowfall in that area. that warm air continues to track in from the south from jackson all the way into alabama, into the lower 60s, and that's what allowing us to see that warmer air. it's going to be a quick mover here as we go from the # 0s to 40 -- 60s to 40s as we head into sunday due to our next cold front that will give us isolated pockets of rain showers tomorrow evening. we're sitting in the 60s at 3:00 today. unfortunately these winds will not die town until we get into the 7:00 hour. you can see finally down to 10 miles per hour. but, as we head into your sunday, not an issue at all.

>> yeah, i definitely do. there is an association between fire fighting and cancer. >> reporter: this doctor conducted a landmark study reviewing 60 years of data from 30,000 firefighters. >> we found that firefighters have increased risk for all cancers, and that increased risk was primarily driven by six types of cancers. cancer. five years and i don't have the heart to move it. >> reporter: it took the life of dawn's husband. you still miss him. >> tremendously. i just -- i can't get over it. he was everything to me. date. >> reporter: and the leukemia

firefighter battled not once, but twice. >> that hits you pretty good. >> reporter: investigators found there's more. a lot more evidence than just dr. hail's data. we found study after study connecting budding fires to an increased risk of cancer. studies done around the globe and here in the u.s., the types of cancer vary, the results always the same. but in spite of the evidence, we found ohio is one of just 16 states refusing to offer help to firefighters who get cancer. >> i feel almost embarrassed. >> we can't get it out of committee. there's no other disabling injury that someone in ohio will receive

>> reporter: the law would guarantee firefighters workers compensation benefits. this can he the get cancers proven to be connected to fighting fires. benefits that would allow them to take time off without using up their sick days, and full medical coverage. something they don't get now. >> the bills are astronomical. >> reporter: mark saily say they held a benefit to raise money when he battled lymphoma. >> i've never even medical bills that high. >> reporter: ohio lawmakers won't pass this legislation. and why is that? . we went to columbus to ask susan caves. she's fought against it for years. >> could you explain why you oppose the legislation? >> one of the things was we heard it was going to cost that good bit of money. >> reporter: she's right.
