the super bowl and a heisman trophy winner, as well. >> one in the same. >> one in the same. >> a lot of surprises. can't wait to get to those. first we want to the breaking news overnight. a commuter train plunging into a creek after jumping the trains happening east of san francisco where kayna whitworth is now. good morning to you, kayna. >> reporter: amy, good morning. it was just after rush hour when this commuter train derailed and when you look behind me you can get a sense of how far that first car fell before it landed in the creek below. i went down there. that water is moving fast and it is cold. passengers telling us that right before the crash, there was an eerie silence. twisted metal, a desperate rescue effort. >> we're having a difficult time figuring out how we're going to access anybody on this train. >> reporter: emergency personnel breaking windows in a frantic race to make sure all 214 passengers are brought to safety.

>> reporter: at 7:25 p.m. this commuter train traveling from fremont to pleasanton hit a tree. the first car twisting sideways into the rain-swollen creek. >> the train flipped and started seeing water coming in the bottom of the train. >> reporter: as rising water overtakes the train, passengers scramble to escape. >> i need an additional three ambulances to this location. >> reporter: officials telling abc news it's a miracle everyone survived. those who were not injured had to walk two miles on a fire road before being shuttled to safety. >> i was never more happy to see flashing lights. >> reporter: nine people were taken to the hospital. four of them with serious injuries. now, i was speaking with authorities that tell me today they plan on removing the three cars that are on the tracks first. they consider them to be unstable and then they will remove the car that's in the water and, of course, amy and george, train service is canceled until further notice. >> understandable.

>> that could have been so much worse. we move on to a big day in the race for the white house. republicans facing contests in four states and democrats battling it out in two as our new poll shows ted cruz closing the gap with donald trump nationwide. abc's tom llamas is on the trail in jackson, mississippi. good morning, tom. >> reporter: george, good morning to you. the polls here in mississippi open in about an hour, and we now know that mayor michael bloomberg will not be entering the race for president while mitt romney will play an active role recording a robo call for marco rubio. it's not an endorsement but the message is clear don't vote for donald trump. at a mississippi high school kool chool rallying a crowd inside and outside with four states voting today, trump laying it on thick. >> michigan, we have hawaii and we have the greatest potato group in the world, idaho.

andrews trial. the sportscaster leaving the courtroom with a huge win. a jury awarding her $55 million over the secret nude video a stalker recorded at a hotel. abc's eva pilgrim has the very latest for us from nashville this morning. good morning, eva. >> reporter: good morning, amy. after almost two weeks of an emotional trial, centered around that naked video of erin andrews, it took the jury about six hours to make a decision. and one juror telling abc news, they wanted this verdict to send a message. >> 55 million, correct? >> yes, sir. >> reporter: erin andrews overcome with emotion as the judge read the verdict. the jury deciding the nashville mar vot shares the blame for that secretly recorded video seen by more than 17 million people. erin andrews later tweeting this statement. i've been honored by all the support from victims around the world. their outreach has helped me be able to stand up and hold accountable those whose job it is to protect everyone's safety.

to be ongoing for the rest of her life. >> reporter: andrews claimed the hotel made it easy for her stalker, michael barrett to get a room next door to hers and through a peephole he altered shoot video of her getting out of the shower. the hotel claims he was a criminal who tricked them into gaining access and one juror saying the only debate for the group was how much to pay her. the $55 million payout will be split almost in half with barrett taking 51% of the fault. the hotel's management company and owner, 49%. >> an amount that high sends a pretty strong message. >> the hotel industry we just felt like they need to get the message that this is somebody's privacy. it's their personal life and you got to take that seriously. >> reporter: the hotel's lawyers disappointed with the outcome saying they hope to eventually talk to the jurors before deciding if they will appeal. >> keep in mind this had never happened before and hadn't happened since.

that were undertaken after this was discovered, what mr. barrett had done. >> reporter: the hotel's lawyer says the nashville marriott has installed peephole covers to make sure this never happens again, amy. >> eva pilgrim, thanks so much. joining us now abc news chief legal analyst, dan abrams. six hours. were you surprised by such a quick and large verdict. >> i was stunned by the speed. this was a long jury trucks with a lot of complicated legal questions. but let's be clear. this was a huge win for erin andrews. not just in terms of the number, but in terms of the way the verdict came down. meaning the concern for erin andrews was too much of this verdict will be for barrett, the guy who actually filmed it. why is that a problem? he's got no money so the real question was how much is going to be allocated to marriott so by doing this verdict at 51% responsibility for barrett, he was clearly the guy who actually did it, but then a whole 49% for

verdict as she could get in terms of the split. not only do you have this big $55 million verdict but this $26 million verdict against marriott so all in all a really big win for erin andrews. >> do you think that the amount will hold, though, under appeal. >> the first question is going to be for the judge. the judge is going to review this verdict first and if the judge thinks that it's excessive, the judge could actually be involved in reducing it first of all even before an appeal but i think that there's very likely this verdict will stand largely even if it's reduced a bit. >> all right, dan abrams, we appreciate it. thanks so much. and now to that bombshell announcement rocking the tennis world, maria sharapova, one of the sport's biggest stars calling a press conference admitting she failed a drug test. abc's ryan smith is here with the latest on that. good morning, ryan. >> reporter: so many thought she was going to announce her retirement but maria sharapova stunned the world with that shocking announcement saying she takes full responsibility for the failed test and that a rule

negatively as he can. you know, where was that energy when he was fighting obama? he disappeared he was a terrible candidate so i guess, you know, i would imagine something like that could have an impact but we have a lot of loyal people. >> nobody would call michael bloomberg a failure. here's what he said. he's not getting in because he's worried it might help you and said "trump has run the most divisive and demagogic campaign i've seen preying on people's prejudices and fears. trump appeals to our worst impulses" from someone who's been pretty friendly to you and says he won't get in to help make sure you don't win. >> well, look, you know, i mean i used to be a friend of his when he had a problem with ferry point a failed project in new york he called on me to solve it and i did. i made it successful and was

and no one knew what to do. he used to be a friend of mine. i guess he disagrees with what i'm saying but i lot agree. we have to be vigilant, smart, strengthen our military and strengthen our borders. we have to get rid of obamacare and replace it with something good, george and, you know, i mean the polls i'm looking at, i don't know about the ones you have but the ones i'm looking at, i'm way up in michigan and way up in mississippi which are going today and i'm doing well in idaho. i love their potatoes and i doing well in idaho and doing know what to tell you. prominent people comparing you the day. you saw over the weekend louis c.k. and glenn beck called you a dangerous man and yesterday the mexican president said you're using the same language that ushered in hitler and mussolini. i can't remember that kind of comparison being used against candidate. does it suggest to you should

>> well, maybe so but i mean, look, i have a tremendous following. we want to make america great again. it's a strong following. i don't know about the hitler comparison. i hadn't heard that but it's a terrible comparison. i'm not happy about that certainly. i don't want that comparison but, you know, we have to be strong and we have to be vigilant and people agree with that and we don't want to lose our jobs to china and we don't want to lose our jobs to mexico and japan and all these countries taking our jobs away from us like we're children. we don't know what we're doing. we have leaders that don't know what they're doing. we're losing so much in this country and we're losing -- we're losing the spirit and we just can't do it so i have to be -- i have to be strong and, again, i have a group of -- i have a tremendous following. you know, the republican, the biggest story in politics is how many people are going to the primaries on the republican side, it's a record number. they're up 55%, 60%. some are up as much as 100%. and that hasn't happened ever.
