people to stay off of public transportation. we have those instructions from a company in akron and today we learned a the lo of people in northeast ohio have ties to that country. our bob jones was able to track down one man. and this man is in belgium tonight. >> reporter: he is asking the same question that many are asking, why was belgium attacked by terrorists? >> we don't know how to react or how to respond to it. >> reporter: i talked with allegers by skype from belgium hours after the attacks and he told me he feared for his younger sister that had taken the metro to school. >> my sister was on her way to brussels when it happened and she is at school and locked in school, just for her own safety

>> reporter: he later learned some friends had a closer call when bombs went off at the airport. >> they heard the bombs and saw the bombs and they saw the elevators come down but they themselves are not hurt. >> reporter: a case western reserve engineer graduate and he and his girlfriend a p hd student in akron launched a standup desk company in akron and they don't believe it will impact their business and they won't live in fear as they travel back and forth from akron and belgium. >> they had extra military on the streets before today with isis taking responsibility for tuesday's bombings, he knows his own country faces uncertainty. >> it gives some people the

they were out of the equipment she needed. paramedics said the rise in overdose calls may be to blame. megan hickey has been following the story. what is the issue exactly. >> reporter: the drug and the overdose drug use a nasal applicator and the rise in overdoses have been putting a strain on the supplies. >> take them off. >> reporter: 5-year-old page had a two hour seizure earlier this month but when paramedics arrived they couldn't give the epileptic drug the medication she needed because they were out of the applications. much of that could be because of heroin overdoses. the nasal applications are used for drugs and they have asked

the pharmacy for more. >> we have acquired extras so we are not in that position because we are seeing an increase in overdose. >> reporter: working on staying ahead of the problem because it is not a paramedic's job to determines who gets the medicine. >> we don't run into a situation that we have a 5-year- old having a seizure laying next to an overdose victim so it is really who calls us first. >> reporter: concord township has seen two overdose deaths. that is why they are pairing up with the addiction board to see what his team can help after the patient is revived. >> a week later we are picking them up again so maybe they don't want help or they don't know how to get it. >> reporter: chief sabo says paramedics will hand out cards to overdose victims explaining how narcan works and how they can find resources to overcome the addiction megan hickey, newschannel 5.

the centers for disease control and prevention is urging ohio officials to address the growing number of opiate deaths. the youngest overdose victim was 17 and the oldest was 71. the cd c released the numbers and continued support for testing for fen tan nol. there is a strong warning for pain killers and it will apply

it is part of a bigger federal epidemic of abuse and death tried to drugs such as vicodin and percocet. an ohio board is recommending that state lawmakers increase the tobacco task and boost the age to 21. this is just one of many ideas, leaders of the ohio commission included in a report released at a news conference at the state house. the other recommendations included improvements to collection of data and building on interventions and strengthening the health system. let's check in with motion jason nicholas. >> the sunshine is out there. mostly cloudy skies across the lakes and you head inland south and west, sunshine. here is a live look. astubula mostly cloudy skies and the sun well off to the west here. today is a good blend of sun and sunshine and the good news

me in the leg. >> temporary protection orders like the one issued in ronna's case is supposed to keep victims safe. >> it did not keep a gun out of his hands because he purchased one. >> reporter: our 5 on your side investigation found significant gaps in laws allow abusers to buy and possess firearms. >> the ultimate goal is to save lives. >> there was legislation aimed at closing deadly loop holes. >> a woman and her children should not have to live in fear that the intimate partner, her ex-wife boyfriend or husband that she filed the civil protection order against will track her down and shoot and kill her. >> reporter: the law would make it illegal for abusers convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence to own guns. it would also allow court to force abusers to turn over their weapons while a
