george. well, the quake was felt here if rome for about 30 seconds or so of swaying and shaking. but at the open centers about 100 miles northeast of here, it lasted for a terrifying 14sec2 seconds. it happened in the middle of the night. the worst time. everyone in nair beds. rescue workers flooding the scene, trying to save lives. overnight, a deadly earthquake bringing down buildings in central italy. the debris this morning. looking for anyone who may still be trapped. this woman was pulled from the rubble alive. walls of buildings are completely gone. on this building, only the wall remains. the 6.2 magnitude quake struck just after 3:30 in the morning. >> the electricity had gone.

down the stairs into the garden. >> reporter: many people spent the night outside as the aftershocks came. >> quite severe shake of the beds. the first thing i did was panic and we waited for it to just subside to go check on our children. >> reporter: in rome, about 100 miles northeast, buildings shook for about 30 seconds. one local mayor saying half his town is gone. the italian government says damage is severe. they're sending heavy equipment to clear wreckage in the in 2009, central italy was hit by a 6.3 magnitude quake. that one killed over 300 people and demolished towns. no major city was struck by this quake. that devastation region is a region of picturesque hill top towns, stone houses, very vulnerable to quakes. as after every quake, it's a race against time.

gilroy. he was in the middle of the quake. thank you for joining us. you're in a hotel on the second floor in the town of multipulciano. what happened? >> yeah, it was just before 4:00 in the morning. you know, we felt kind of the best way to describe sit a rolling of the bed. that quickly turned into a shake. and, you know, we gathered our stuff and ran out as quick as we could with everyone earthquake? >> didn't know right away. actually, my first thought was that it was a medical emergency of some sort. traveling with my girlfriend. realized that wasn't the case. on the way out, we saw the pretty big chandelier sway trg side to side. that's when i think we knew for sure. >> what is the scoop like right now? >> yeah, the destruction looks devastating. you know, it looks like there

roads. and really, terrible scene. >> so is the village locked in right now? because there's so much destruction? >> that's what it looks like. these roads are very, very narrow. and, the homes are built on top of each other. they're all brick. when they come down, there's not a lot of space in between. >> are you going to be able to stay in your hotel has it avoided enough damage to stay there? or are you trying to get out on leaving. we had a car come at 6:00 in the morning. we're fortunate enough to be able to get out and so we headed down south, away from that region. >> but the quake region is pretty large, isn't it? >> it seems to be. you know, we were in the middle of tuscany. a big destination. and it seems like a lot of people were affected all the way down to rome, which is where we are now.

thank you for sharing your story this morning. >> yep, thank you for having me. >> you see so many of those old builtings just crumble. >> so awful that it happened when it happened. people didn't know what hit them. they were asleep. we want to turn to dr. lucy jones, an expert in earthquakes for more on the threat in italy and what we need to be prepared for at home. dr. jones, according to reports, the earthquake lasted for nearly 2:30. is that unusual? of how long people felt shaking. that probably includes some aftershock. a magnitude 6 is going to be on a fault about ten miles long and probably last about five or six seconds that the earth is producing energy. >> that's interesting. this is the second major earthquake to hit italy in seven years. you have called this area the california of europe, yes? >> right. it's just like in california -- the united states, california is

happening. italy is the same thing in europe. it's the most common source of earthquakes. the 2009 earthquake that killed several hundred people is on the same fault system. as was a quake back in 1997. >> there have been as many as 150 aftershocks. what are the big concerns right now? >> there mr. be continuing aftershocks. that mountain range is characterized by earthquake sequences, where there will be there will probably be more damaging earthquakes in the sequence, potentially larger than the first one. >> as they're searching for survivors, they're having to deal with significant aftershocks, yes? >> absolutely. the recovery time can be very, very dangerous. the building's unstable. >> any concern here at home? >> no, one thing we have seen when we look at how earthquakes trigger others, it happens very

bunch of the candidates dropped out. jeb bush was on the ballot in a number of states. marco rubio was still on in a number of states. one of the most interesting cases was in texas. two state senators died before election day who stayed on the ballot through election day. both won the election. though they had died 60 day before election day. >> you're preeobably right. the state election board decision is going to hold she? >> she's just on the ballot. from everything i've seen, she's not going to campaign or do anything. it looks like she has a real physical issue with her spine in the course of this. i think in the end, the democrats will be successful in having their kptd on the ballot. it's not going to be that competitive a race. it's a republican district. the republicans, because of donald trump on the the ballot, want to protect everybody they can. >> thank you, matt.

about breadwinners. a new study by researchers at the university of connecticut find that more men are depended on to be sole providers, the more their mental health suffers. what do you make of in? >> i think the study will surprise a lot of people. it turns stereo types on their head. you have a study that shows men who are under pressure where the expectation is they have to be the breadwinner texas m support their family, the less happy the less healthy they are according to the study. the study looked at a number of people over the course of 15 year. the caveat is they looked at people age 18 to 3. i'm sure there are people out there married, 34, 44, 54, things change along the way. >> you might take some pride. it's surprising to me. it does show something didn't

happier in this study when they get to support the family more. when they get to earn a little bit more. so it's the opposite for women than it is for men. >> i can buy that. i can buy that. we turn to a big debate about home work. it was sparked by a texas teacher's letter to parents. it's gone viral. she says she's not going to assign formal homework this year. we're here with jedediah bila, "the view" co-host, a former loves raymond." >> it's just -- it's just she has too much homework. did you see how many books she has to carry? she's going to be a hunchback. >> i think a lot of kids are burdened. this teacher says, ree search has been unable to prove that homework improves student performa performance. spend your evenings doing smings that are proven to correlate with stunt success.

. 8:56. and we continue to follow breaking news this morning. 77 shutdown in canton. state highway patrol saying they're investigating a shooting on the highway there.

77 south before 4 this morning. finding it abandoned with multiple bullet holes and blood inside. this is right by the pro football hall of fame. investigators saying that the victim was shot at while driving on the highway. then ran to a house nearby for help. that victim taken to mercy medical center and is being treated for non-life- threatening injuries. now, that van that you see there just cleared. we'll look at the maps. we're still seeing major delays and backups on 77 due to incident. look at how far back this goes. well past portage street northwest and we zoom in there. if you're looking for a detour because this is still an issue this morning, take out pleasant street northwest or even shuffle street northwest there, too. and here's a live look outside from 77 at harvard where we do see some issues there in terms of drive times being a little bit affected and now, let's get a check on the forecast with somara. >> and how about a look at the

gain some notches here. started off this morning cool and into the 70s in cleveland and 73 degrees as well as in akron and cooling down in wane county at 59 degrees and we head farther south and west to mansfield at 67 degrees there and the same number in ashtabula. the hour-by-hour forecast. these highs are going to climb into the upper 80s. and today's going to be very warm. we'll see highs around 87 degrees and then, we start to see that chance for showers and thunderstorms move into the forecast. again, a nice mix of sun and clouds until that is when you can expect a shot at scattered thunderstorms. and this is a look at the power of 5 seven-day forecast. you can see here that the stores do persist in -- remember is tos persist into thursday and that is a look at news and weather update for good morning cleveland.
