only on 5, a rough ride on a local road. check out the conditions we found on prospect avenue this morning. here is the problem. this road was repaired during a massive $1.6 million project just last year. the news channel 5 viewer reached out to us with his concerns. >> we're always investigating, so we wanted to know is this normal? derick waller hits the road getting some answers. all right, derick, what have obviously as you just mentioned that this project finished up in the spring, a massive year- long project. but look you can see it for yourself, we have these huge dips and -- huge dips in the road, clearly not what you would expect after spending $1.6 million. >> we should be doing the jobs correctly before getting into the problems. >> reporter: tom horseman rides his bike every day on the downtown cleveland road he says is better suited for cedar

roller coaster on my bike. as time goes on, more and more of these bumps started appearing. >> reporter: owe dot calls this shoveling. that they have road markings swarming, sometimes even disappearing altogether. >> you would think that the brand new road would be nice and flat. >> reporter: especially after careers spent a year tearing it up. the project budgeted for $1.6 million was said because of problems with underground utility. fast forward now and they're blaming utilities again. spokesperson for both odot and the city declined to go on camera, but over e-mails they both blame extreme heat from the underground pipes, thermal pipes that are leaking steam. expect these orange barrels to return to fix the problem horseman says engineers should have already known about. >> it seems puzzling to me about why the road was done without addressing those issues
6:02 pm
several questions that we'll have for odot and the city. we'll be asking those in the coming days. we want to mention that the city is now making repairs to this road and they will be overseeing those repairs so that they are done to their standards. we'll stay on top of this. live in cleveland derick waller news channel 5. new at 6:00, a sheriff's office confirms that some districts there are considering arming teachers. we're talking about the city schools, the career center, the districts with select staff members would be trained and license to carry a gun. then they will undergo training to learn how to use a gun in a school setting. the hope is that those people would be a line of defense if an attacker got into their buildings. charges have been filed against teenagers in connection with a fire that destroyed an old schoolhouse in summit county. 19-year-old matthew swan and 18- year-old brandon mccrowski

needle. police suspect that this was a heroin overdose. a burnt spoon was found on a dresser and several doses of narcan were used to revive mckinniss. the kid's father was contacted to take custody of them. mckinniss was taken to the hospital, walked away from it, then recaptured. neighbors across the street saw the panicked girl dialing 911 telling us what happened. it shows the opioid epidemic is spiraling out of control. too many times kids are caught in the middle. >> i think it is pathetic that a child has to come home to find their mother, grandpa, grandmother, it doesn't matter who they are finding because it is bad. grandma and grandpas are even doing this stuff. >> i'm at a loss for words. like i said it's running rampant. and it is always going to be like that. i believe, i mean, how are you going to stop that? it is like cancer. how are you going to stop it? >> reporter: in mansfield bob jones news channel 5. well today new details are emerging about how the state is

dramatic moments that four people smashed their way into a cleveland family dollar. police just released the pictures that you're seeing here as you can see them slam into the store along fulton road. the four men grabbed an atm and ran out. this happened on september 17. so far officers haven't been able to identify the men. we're going to turn now to democracy 2016 and always something to talk about in that and the countdown now to the showdown between the presidential candidates would square off in their first debate on monday night. >> it'll be something here as john matarese has been following the campaigns for more than a year now. what can you expect on monday? >> no one knows what turn this could take, which will make their debates so key. the two candidates reportedly approaching their preps will be seeing a different look on briefing books while watching trump's past debate performances and holding mock debates with someone playing

clinton and meeting with a team of advisors including roger ailes. but sources say that the sessions are more relaxed, not really serious prep work. i spoke with abc's political director about their plans for monday. >> everyone says to get the popcorn ready that we're not going to have time to breathe or eat during this debate that it will be so busy with a fact checking team that's assembled. we'll be digging into a lot of those claims, doing a lot of analysis. and as you know that they often dominate. >> that is the important thing that those moments will be what is replayed all day on tuesday and shaping the dialogue in the race going forward. on your side john matarese news -- john kosich news channel 5. >> believe it or not the election is just 46 days away. voters are already able to vote in some states. early voted started today in minnesota, vermont, virginia, south dakota. out of these states, they're pretty key because the race between trump and clinton is very tight there.

another warm day today, but they are shrinking these warm days, aren't they? >> they are. fall is about to move in and take over. it's just not here today on this first official full day of fall still feeling those warmer temperatures. the clouds are trying to help here in mentor with darker clouds in place and maybe even some rain chances for east ciders first. it's moisture off the lake shift east. 78 with a drop in temperatures for cleveland and your record high today that 89 is a drastic drop and you can see the temperature change in color here and that the front is sagging to the south. still warm in akron though at 85. 84 in worcester to 70 in ashtabula. awaiting some rain chances from that front as well. west side we are nice and dry. you can see some of that moisture towards toledo kind of dies out. but east ciders, i do think especially in ashtabula county you can start to see a little moisture moving in. geneva on the lake to ashtabula

problems either. they are reporting four issues. iphone 7 is getting stuck in airplane mode and not being able to connect to the network. how about not being able to adjust the volume when the, i hate to say this, when the ear buds are in. that's not cool. but the hissing sound, that would really get to me that we have already heard about, and the home button not working if you touch it with a glove or through a plastic case. let's get it together. let's get it being called a real life super hero. >> this is great. good morning cleveland karina piza has the story. >> the iconic super hero phrases that certainly apply to simon flying through the clinical trial and making a difference along the way. the man of steel. >> i wear this wherever i go. >> reporter: is in the

6:16 pm
so the stem cells are removed from the blood and then genetically modified to make the bone marrow resistant to side effects. >> this is exactly what we're aiming for that we have delivered a very effective treatment to someone with a brain tumor. and he's been able to tolerate the treatments very well. he's lead a full and active life, now he's going back out into the world to continue with that very active and fulfilling life. this is what it is all about. >> reporter: so let's talk about that nickname, super man. when you consider that he's been going through these treatments all while working a full-time job running races, even being there for his son's wedding and daughter's graduation. >> we just have to kick a test, pardon my french and we've beendoing that every day since. >> reporter: behind him a group of family and friends forming team simon strong. together they have raised more than $12,000 for the fight against brain cancer. that support and keeping a

6:18 pm
eye on this situation. >> certainly will. we have a small craft advisory going up on the lake because of the front that's really picking up the winds kind of coming out of nowhere, which certainly could have caused this accident. and so paying close attention to that and we'll keep you updated as well. weather wise everything is changing because of this front. the hot high that we had today that was record breaking is now going to be gone and that we'll be falling like fall once again. moving towards those weekend hours. but for right now, some sunshine here in cleveland mixed with a the clouds are certainly doing their part and cooling us down with that hot high today. a record that is now tied with 2010 of 89 degrees. the typical high should be around 71. there is a front that will be draped across us. stationary for the most part, but they will move south as that cold front will be taking away their moisture and heat. notice some of the areas are already impacted bit front through the north and cooler.
6:19 pm
east side especially cooler. 72 at madison with a light rain that they will be holding together to provide a sprinkle or two in ashtabula. 76 in burton and 74 for jefferson, a little warmer south with more sunshine in canton at 83 and 85 for us in jackson township. the peninsula yesterday, you hit a high of 91 today and you will be staying in the upper 80s, but 87 currently. 76 in ashland. 83 in lodi with just 77 in elyria and 76 for us vermilion. overall, the fall will be starting to take shape just a little bit more. perfect timing for those friday night football games with that small rain chance as you're sitting in the stands. the players will not mind it. 76 that will start for you. but we expect those 70s to be sticking around for the entire game because of the added cloud cover. let's time out your rain chances. moisture over the lake, it is pretty true, but you'll notice back west that the yellows, the oranges, the reds, that's not really happening. so this model will be off just
6:20 pm
us. but the west ciders, you may see that punch of about 9:00 to 10:00 and a little light rain. and then a little early morning instability along the lake. warmer temperatures over the lake, cooler over the land and the shift of the winds that could bring that early morning rain chance to dry up for us looking at the much cooler afternoon on saturday. rainfall not so impressive here initially, but i do think that on monday and tuesday they could have a drink for their yards as much as half of an inch to hold it together. rainfall is also moving ou and a nice little front on twitter and facebook just letting me know that they are happening this weekend and 61 your start. good luck to all those runners. your seven-day forecast is coming up. >> all right, thank you, andy. high school football tonight. she's in the hot chair. >> you're going to be there? >> i'm enjoying the highlights tonight. >> have you worked on adjectives? >> give me one. >> i'm ready right now, i can't give you my secret now because you're trying to put it in your copy. i know the game. >> you got it. >> i know the game.
