lake. people called behnken. i'm keith cate. >> i'm jennifer leigh. thank you for joining us. it is a story that would shock any apartment. a bradenton boy bitten by another child at day care and an employee is charged with a felony. john rogers joins us live outside of jay's bright learner's day care where this all happened. john, the images of this child's injury are disturbing. r horrifying. this is not the first time this day care has had issues. the pictures are unbelievable. amanda beady picked up her son from day care and found him like this with bite marks on his face, back, and arms. he was attacked by another child when they should have been supervised. she declined to speak with 8 on your side but wrote a facebook post that has gone viral.

as a mother, you hear these day care horror stories and pray it doesn't happen to your children. >> the fact of the matter is the employee who was supposed to be watching these children wasn't doing her job at the time. >> reporter: deputies say 23- year-old casey burke failed to properly care for the children. the arrest report says the kids were napping while burke should have been watching. instead, she talked to colleagues and ate lunch. at one point, she heard crying neglect which is a felony. we went to the day care looking for answers. but they didn't want to talk. >> i'm not going to talk about it. >> reporter: 8 on your side went digging into records and found since december, the day care was cited twice for improperly supervising children. the department of children and families is steping in saying in a statement what happened to this child is absolutely unacceptable. we are conducting a child care

attorney. burke no longer works at this facility. we are told the boy that bit this other child no longer attends here either. jen? >> john, just listening to the story, i'm sure a lot of parents are concerned. are there ways they can check on the history of a day care like you did that they may be interested in? >> reporter: yes, the department of children and families makes all these records public so you can go on the website and find the information. do you have any questions about should do their research about day cares. >> without question. john rogers, live in manatee county. thanks john. now, an 8 on your side investigation. dog fight. >> well, the fangs are out in a debate over the new animal abuse registry in hillsborough county. you would think passing an ordinance designed to help animals would be all warm and fuzzy. but, as senior investigative reporter steve andrews reminds

hillsborough county we are talking about. >> reporter: that's right keith. an animal abuse registry sounds great. county commissioners are busting their buttons over this one. but, and a big but, critics say this won't save one animal from abuse. animal abuse stories haunt our headlines. the county created an animal abuse registry. it requires people convicted of abusing animals to register prohibits them adopting in the future. it requires buyers in pet stores to sign and affidavit that they are not on the registry. >> when we talk about an affidavit at the pet store, that animal is already out the door, already abused. it doesn't matter if they sign a piece of paper or not. >> reporter: anna think it is ordinance needs more work. that's when the fangs came out. >> there were accusations that

forward. this is hoardly a political ploy. >> reporter: commissioner kevin beckner is behind the registry. he claims the animal advisory committee wants to rewrite it to get the credit. >> i think there are a couple of members that probably have other intentions and so, we can't deal with politics and ego that sits on the aac board. >> if we want to talk about this being a political thing, then we need to ask commissioner beckner why he chose a secret committee. >> reporter: hillsborough already has a not allowed to own animals. when you are supposed to be the voice of animals ... earlier this year, 8 on your side revealed that list had not been updated in two years. >> if you can't maintain one, you can't maintain the other. >> reporter: the sheriff's office and code enforcement will track done those who don't register. code enforcement will handle these like code complaints. really? 8 on your side exposed the county's inability or

side help line. 1-800-338-0808. now to breaking news. an arrest tonight in the beating and robbery of a man outside a saint pete wal-mart. harold stewart is behind bars. he robbed a man and beat him with his own walker last friday. stewart was arrested today in tampa. the search is also over for the man deputies tell us robbed and in one case killed someone trying to sell items there an app. victor mann is in the polk co he is accused of useing the let's go app to meet people wanting to sell items. he would then rob them. one victim pulled out a gun and was shot and killed by mann according to investigators. other victims are still shaken. >> i have lived in lakeland my whole life. i never thought ... i knew people had the capacity to do bad things but i wasn't prepared for that. >> investigators say mann confessed to the crime saying he was sorry for the bad choices he made.

down in venice. a few passing showers helped to lower the temperature a little more. there are just a few, believe me. here at the lake club, 90 degrees. it's a warm afternoon here with an east wind at 2 miles an hour. it makes for a beautiful shot there. and, the plantation, crystal river, 91 degrees with an east wind. no rain, so, we are not expecting much. most of the activity further to the south. we have a rocket launch at 7:05 p.m. tonight. hopefully hark goes off. an atlas 5 ro they are going to land on an asteroid, take a sample and come back. they will be back in 2023. so, quite an undertaking. didn't know they were doing that. so, good luck. showers continue further down to the south moving from east to west. that is the flow. a few scattered showers, hardy, de soto county. manatee county, not a lot of lightning. but showers. no severe weather. 7:00 a.m., 76 degrees. 92 at 4:00 p.m. another warm day tomorrow.

carry on. but we will slowly add moisture back into the atmosphere early next week. look for more seasonal chances. a little more action along the sea breeze front. 88 degrees largo. lutz, 88. treasure island, 85 degrees. it is 87 in arcadia. you get these readings in a stronger easterly flow. look at dade city. the dew points lower but coming back more. natural with more of an easterly flow. it has been nice to enjoy the slightly drier air we have had around the past couple of days. a few fair weather clouds and the showers popping down to the south. the water vapor imagery, that red color is dry air high above in the atmosphere. it is still hanging around. some of that mixing down at the surface. you can see most of the peninsula is dry. even south florida which has been wet the past couple of days is quieter. high pressure does remain the feature providing us with that

so 20, 30, 40% chance of rain for tomorrow. southern areas probably a little better chance of seeing that shower activity we talked about. in the tropics, not much. about a 20% chance of development over five days for this area. there's puerto rico right there. you can see most of the computer models want to move this to the northwest. next five days, a 60% chance of development for this one we have been talking about for several days now. as we look at the 2016 hurricane season. a number of number of hurricanes, 4. alex, earl, gaston, and hermine. and, the peak of hurricane season, september 10 which is just a couple of days away. rain chance, 30% in the forecast area friday. 30% as well for saturday. also, for sunday. by monday and tuesday, that 30 and 40% chance carries in. that is more of a typical pattern. afternoon, evening showers and storms. and temperatures remain near normal at 90 degrees. a disaster.

executive is calling last night's commander-in-chief forum. they are criticizing matt laeur for not fact checking trump and being tougher on clinton. josh benson joins us from the tampa news center with a look at how the race for the white house is moving forward. >> reporter: well, it was back to the trail today for two very important swing states. both candidates, clinton to north carolina, trump to ohio. after they face the fire in that nbc commander-in-chief forum last night. it was just a preview before possibly an explosive first debate. almost immediately, hillary clinton was on defense over e- mail use. >> i communicated about classified material on a wholly separate system. i exactly what i should have done and i take it very seriously, always have, always will. >> reporter: on the fight against isis, definitive. >> they are not going to get ground troops.

not one patch of blue water anymore. >> reporter: steve used to enjoy the view and the wildlife right in his backyard at lake crane in sarasota. but now, it's so green, you can't tell where the grass stops and the water begins. >> even otters in this lake. i don't see the otters anymore. and ... it is not going to go away by itself. >> reporter: steve and others who live around this county owned lake have begged officials for help for months but this green and it is not only the people dealing with this. turtles tried to get in on the interview too. but you can hardly even see them. >> i know, maybe we will get some help. maybe the county will have mercy on you. >> reporter: the county used to spray periodically. but then they stopped showing up and residents couldn't get a straight answer. >> what is it like? >> it's terrible. it is a depleting feeling.

and it was a pristine lake. and, the ducks were here. and, the fish were not floating to the surface. >> reporter: fed up with the county, they called me. >> i see you on tv, helping, community, folks that just can't get things done on their own dealing with the bureaucracy or, you know, the power figures out there. and we just wanted, i just wanted to get this done. >> reporter: with sweet talking like that, i decided to make some calls. >> hi, this is shannon behnken i am sitting in front of a very green lake. >> reporter: i had plenty to say, but since a picture is worth a thousand words, i thought this might work faster. and it did work. a county spokesman called me back this afternoon to say lake crane will be treated this saturday. i just left this good news on the homeowner's voice mail and i know he will be very thrilled when he gets home and gets that message. >> yeah, steve giving you the sweet talk.
