>> the company just confirmed to 8 on your side that millions of gallons of contaminated water are flowing into the aquifer. steve andrews has more information and he joins us from our tampa news center. hi steve. >> reporter: hi stacie, the sink hole opened beneath the compartment of the gypsum stack. eagle 8 hd flew over the sink hole a few hours ago. you water flowing into it. we flew directly over it and you can just not see the bottom. now, the sink hole opened august 27. mosaic says 215 million gallons of contaminated water went directly into the aquifer beneath the stack. the water is slightly radioactive and contains phosphoric acid. the company has a large

pulling contaminated water out of the aquifer and pushing it back into the plant where it will be used to process the fertilizer. they have an extensive network of monitoring wells they say and the contaminated network has not reached the monitoring wells indicating much of it has been captured. the florida department of environmental protection was mosaic has notify first-degree federal eps as well as polk county. we have a crew on the way. this gypsum stack was built back in the 90s with a liner. but when a sink hole develops beneath it, there is no way the liner will hold. steve andrews live in our tampa news room. >> thank you. more breaking news now. a fatal crash is causing some big problems on i-75 in hernando county. newschannel8's paul lamison is in eagle 8 right now over the

more about it. paul? >> reporter: good evening keith. here, take a look. we can finally see the accident. these are three of the six cars involved. you can see the back car hit the middle car, crashed up against another blue car which also crashed into another. there is one fatality in this crash and the bad news is, traffic is backed up over four miles. the only way off is the u.s. 98 exit up here in hernando county. though a lot of cars had already passed that. so, there is nowhere for the highway patrol to get them off the interstate. they are just in a waiting game. waiting until they clear this accident. they do have tow trucks here. but they have not yet begun to remove the vehicles from the scene. so it is going to be a mess up here in hernando county. back to you keith. >> again, the northbound lanes i-75 near brooksville. thank you paul. also breaking tonight, in hernando county. two deputies are on administrative leave after shooting a mentally disturbed

a deputy and sergeant were responding to 911 call, a 911 call when the man was reportedly having a mental break down. surrounded by guns and threatening to hurt himself. both members of the sheriff's office had extensive backgrounds in crisis training. tried to calm the man down to no avail. in the end, they had to use leal force, though the man's identity has noted yet been released. we are told he is in his late county deputies are at the scene of an apparent murder. this in saint pete beach. just west of the intersection of 78th avenue and cocino way. where investigators found a man dead on a bench which overlooks the intercoastal water way. now, the only thing they are saying is that the man did die of suspicious circumstances and that they are talking to another man who may be involved. they stressed there is no need for the public to feel

county lawyer is on the other side of the law for bringing a gun to a department hearing. james lowey is charged with carrying a concealed firearm without a permit. he told investigators the fully lowed gun was in his backpack by mistake. tampa bay's beautiful shores tainted by waste water. new tonight, the mayor and the former mayor of saint petersburg are at odds over what contributed to this messy problem. now, the mayor of saint pete former mayor thinks something else is to blame on the mess. jeff patterson has more. it sounds like we have a bigger problem here than first thought. >> reporter: yeah, good evening keith. so far, 128 million gallons at least of partially tweeted waste water has been dumped into tampa bay. mayor rick has released a video on youtube saying bay area waters and beaches are safe. but, state representative

convinced and tonight she is raising very real health concerns. as hurricane hermine pounded pinellas county, 15 inches of rain fell on saint petersburg in a four-day period. and the city of saint petersburg dumped partially tweeted waste water into tampa bay. >> climate change has arrived. >> reporter: in a new youtube video, mayor rick says the city faced a difficult choice. dump the waste water into the bay or let it back up into homes and streets. >> more than a decade leaders began making plans to take one of our waste water facilities offline. >> reporter: he explained how aging pipes contributed to the problem because they leak. and storm water floods into the waste water pipes. >> admittedly, the infrastructure is ages but when i looked, it was pretty watertight. >> reporter: the former mayor believes the issue is not the leaking pipes. >> this mayor doesn't have a

problem. that is the primary issue. i think albert whited was decommissioned premature think. >> reporter: they voted to take the waste water treatment plan offline in 2011. it operated until 2015. mayor creissman's office says they fought the plan to take it offline. kathlene peters is calling for a meeting of local leaders to find out why the was released and what can be done about it. >> it is up to them to manage the infrastructure and make sure they have one appropriate for their population. but have we missed something at the state level? >> reporter: yeah, the mayor's office told me late this afternoon, they have a consultant report that shows leaks into the waste water system are a major contributing factor and to them, dumping sewer water into the bay

an investigation into that. she wants to know why and how it can be fixed. >> is the water safe? >> reporter: the mayor contends it is. but they only have monitoring systems at a certain number of beaches. they don't monitor all of the water or all of the beaches but now, no bay area beaches are closed because of bacteria concerns. >> jeff patterson, thank you. seven stranded swimming serenely at sea. >> that is after days of being stuck in a golf course pond. we will tell you how the animals crossed the course to wind up in a giant salad bowl for manatees. that and the rescue coming up. >> well, a warm 90 degrees for a high temperature today. a few scattered showers remain. not many. most of them inland. we will look at your evening forecast and for the weekend

>> new tonight, the city of tampa is sticking with red light cameras for two more years. in a very close 4-3 vote, tampa city council approved a new contract with the company that operates the cameras. supporters believe red light cameras make the city safer. but, several bay area communities have gotten rid of red light cameras recently. a car did not just crash into a building in tampa today.

you can see the damage here, major damage in fact for the triple a appliance service on north florida avenue. the business was open when it happened. one person was inside and taken to the hospital as a result of the incident. police tell us the driver was speeding. lost control. at this point, that person has not been charged. it is a long process that has taken all day. but tonight, seven healthy manatees stranded during hurricane hermine are back in the wild. check out th 8 hd. volunteers formed a human chain in the plantation on crystal river golf course pond. they herded the manatees. that is how they found a few straggling cows that is, they escaped rescuers count on the first go round. >> this whole golf course was underwater enough so that i think they were even boats going up and down the fairways. we had a report of four manatees on the golf course.

exposed to the toxic herbicide agent orange. heart disease is linked to the exposure. >> late in 2007, i flunked a fire department physical because i had heart disease. >> reporter: he filed a claim in the da have a service connected disability. he has coronary artery disease. the va wanted more tests but never scheduled them. in august of 2011, rich sent a letter asking when the tests would be scheduled. >> of course, >> so you didn't get a yes or a no. >> just got nothing. >> reporter: a few months later the va rejected his claim saying you did not have a diagnosis of heart disease. >> it was by some bureaucrat based on an opinion of the doctor i have never met. >> reporter: rich appealed the denial. last year, va doctors performed open heart surgery on rich. he had advanced heart disease.

[ laughter ] >> reporter: more than a year later, the va still had not decided if he had heart disease. rich contacted 8 on your side. i reached out to his congressman and the va at bay pines and told them this is one of the craziest va stories i had ever heard. they determined within the week rich does in fact have heart disease. now, acin is now claiming that severe multivessel cardio vascular disease came on suddenly in april of 2015 though the evidence shows he was diagnosed back in 2010. >> you know, if this wasn't so serious, it would be laughable, the ridiculous nature of all of this. and how does this affect his disability claim? >> reporter: it will only be retro active until 2015 when it

to be ignoring the diagnosis made by his own doctor back in 2010. i mean, how ridiculous is this? >> for sure. thank you steve. >> sure. well, a pretty looking sky up here in land o' lakes. 84 degrees. north winds at 3. no rainfall. temperatures pretty reasonable though, 84. it has been hot today. hyundai new port richey, the humidity is extremely high. dew points in the mid to upper 70s . that is ry 85 degrees lowes don cesar. mostly overcast at the moment. in terms of showers, there are a few, not widespread, maybe not as many as yesterday, but the atmosphere still has a lot of moisture high above in the atmosphere. and obviously at the surface, so, we could still generate showers and keep them in the forecast tomorrow as well. spotty activity from north to south. drifting off to the east, you can see the thunderstorms east of the orlando area. a few showers down in highlands

northeast of lake wales and west of lake placid. the rain chances will drop a little bit. working some slightly drier air down the peninsula this weekend on the western side of that tropical storm, and it is a tropical storm again, it was briefly a tropical depression. that there help to drag the air further south. maybe not the air you will feel. maybe some of the northern spots. certainly, the rain chances could drop a little bit. there is your forecast at 7:00 a.m. 87 largo, seminole, pinellas park. 86 in upper 80s inland. 82 weeki wachee. crystal river, 81. feels like numbers 100 degrees. look at sebring there. over 100 degrees hawaii is the temperature and the humidity rough average. it is is a value combined. drier air remains aloft just to the north. this is some of the drier air building into the western side of julia. and that is helping to keep a lot of the activity off the eastern side of it.

of rain. the winds are spinning away with the system. and the rain continues to come occasionally in squall like weather. a lot of the heavier thunderstorms are well off to the east ever this system. meanwhile, the dry air, you can see the difference here across the northern part of the state. sort of shuts it down. front like, you can see the showers that have popped up across central and south florida. not super widespread. look at the forecast track for this thing. really doesn't go anywhere. and, it certainly won't affect the tampa part in the low pressure area off the east coast and close to florida. tropical depression number 12 well out in the atlantic will continue to move to the west. we will watch it over a period of time. probably 12 or 13 days or so. close to two weeks before any kind of effect could potentially be on the u.s. rpm forecast computer model, the westerly flow is definitely in place and pushing everything off to the east. friday, partly cloudy skies.
