latest. good morning, terry. >> reporter: good morning, george. well, the quake was felt here if rome for about 30 seconds or so of swaying and shaking. but at the open centers about 100 miles northeast of here, it lasted for a terrifying 14sec2 seconds. it happened in the middle of the night. the worst time. everyone in nair beds. rescue workers flooding the scene, trying to save lives. overnight, a bringing down buildings in central italy. rescue crews are still scouring the debris this morning. looking for anyone who may still be trapped. this woman was pulled from the rubble alive. walls of buildings are completely gone. on this building, only the wall remains. the 6.2 magnitude quake struck just after 3:30 in the morning.

we were able to make our way down the stairs into the garden. >> reporter: many people spent the night outside as the aftershocks came. >> quite severe shake of the beds. the first thing i did was panic and we waited for it to just subside to go check on our children. >> reporter: in rome, about 100 miles northeast, buildings shook for about 30 seconds. one local mayor saying half his town is gone. the italian government says damage is severe. they're senng to clear wreckage in the popular italian summer resort town. in 2009, central italy was hit by a 6.3 magnitude quake. that one killed over 300 people and demolished towns. no major city was struck by this quake. that devastation region is a region of picturesque hill top towns, stone houses, very vulnerable to quakes.

race against time. george? >> we're join bid michael gilroy. he was in the middle of the quake. thank you for joining us. you're in a hotel on the second floor in the town of multipulciano. what happened? >> yeah, it was just before 4:00 in the morning. you know, we felt kind of the best way to describe sit a rolling of the bed. that quickly turned into a shake. and, you know, we stuff and ran out as quick as we could with everyone else. >> you knew right away it was an earthquake? >> didn't know right away. actually, my first thought was that it was a medical emergency of some sort. traveling with my girlfriend. realized that wasn't the case. on the way out, we saw the pretty big chandelier sway trg side to side. that's when i think we knew for sure. >> what is the scoop like right

devastating. you know, it looks like there are multiple homes that have come down completely into the roads. and really, terrible scene. >> so is the village locked in right now? because there's so much destruction? >> that's what it looks like. these roads are very, very narrow. and, the homes are built on top of each other. they're all brick. when they come down, there's not a lot of space in between. >> are you going to be able to stay in your hotel has it avoided enough damage to stay there? or are you trying to get out snmgts we had actually planned on leaving. we had a car come at 6:00 in the morning. we're fortunate enough to be able to get out and so we headed down south, away from that region. >> but the quake region is pretty large, isn't it? >> it seems to be. you know, we were in the middle of tuscany. a big destination. and it seems like a lot of people were affected all the way

are now. >> we're glad you're okay, michael. thank you for sharing your story this morning. >> yep, thank you for having me. >> you see so many of those old builtings just crumble. >> so awful that it happened when it happened. people didn't know what hit them. they were asleep. we want to turn to dr. lucy jones, an expert in earthquakes for more on the threat in italy and what we need to be prepared for at home. dr. jones, according to reports, 2:30. is that unusual? >> i think that's an expression of how long people felt shaking. that probably includes some aftershock. a magnitude 6 is going to be on a fault about ten miles long and probably last about five or six seconds that the earth is producing energy. >> that's interesting. this is the second major earthquake to hit italy in seven years. you have called this area the california of europe, yes? >> right.

the united states, california is where the plate boundary and most of the earthquakes are happening. italy is the same thing in europe. it's the most common source of earthquakes. the 2009 earthquake that killed several hundred people is on the same fault system. as was a quake back in 1997. >> there have been as many as 150 aftershocks. what are the big concerns right now? >> there mr. be continuing aftershocks. that mountain range characterized by earthquake sequences, where there will be a lot of events. there will probably be more damaging earthquakes in the sequence, potentially larger than the first one. >> as they're searching for survivors, they're having to deal with significant aftershocks, yes? >> absolutely. the recovery time can be very, very dangerous. the building's unstable. >> any concern here at home? >> no, one thing we have seen

she thinks the state wants to discredit her because she presents a problem to their case. syed remains in prison while prosecute rers appealing the ruling. >> let's talk to dan abrams, nancy grace about that. let's pick up on the last point. the decision to grant a new trial is not based on the witnesses. is the new trial definitely going forward? >> no. when you have a legal ruling like this, prosecutors can they're appealing the decision for a new trial. sure, as a technical legal matter, it doesn't really matter because the ruling from the court below relied on something else. cell phone tower data. but, the fact that there are now question about the star alibi witness has inevitably got to seep into the appeal. if there is a new trial this is syed's star witness.

to it's basically two against one. is this a popularity contest? no. but will it destroy her alibi? yes. >> one question is the legal match nations as we work our way through the appeal. the other is let's assume he gets a new trial. she's suppose d to be his star witness. this is devastating. >> i can't wait for them to bring that book out at trial. >> i don't thing she'll face being prosecuted for anything like perjury or that. when it comes to the trial itself, the public has been watching "serial" there's a whole group of people think he's innocent. he's finally going to get his day now. finally the world is going to see that he's not guilty. even if he gets this new trial, this information is going to be a real problem for him at trial.

good morning. a crash is in the clearing stages on the howard frankland. it was blocking one of the outside lanes, a pretty good backup here. it's moved to the side. in fact a tow truck left with just one of the cars so there's just a slight visual delay on the bridge. let's check all three bridges. you can see in the middle there 10 minutes to get across the howard frankland. 12 across the courtney campbell and 8 to cross the gandy bridge. we have a crash also southbound 275 at busch, it's off to the side so not causing a from there to downtown tampa. i-4 starting to get better after an earlier crash now off to the side just causing a slight visual delay. still 17 minutes at the bottom of 75. to 27 5 . should be summer and it is. gorgeous shot of the beach. a lot of sunshine through most of the day. by the afternoon we'll get back

to 7:00 and then push to the gulf. we're checking in, in the low 80s now, already feels warmer than we are and we'll continue to see those numbers climbing throughout the day. as far as the temperatures hour by hour, we'll take you through, 92 the high today as opposed to the mid and upper 90s from yesterday. so slightly -- well, hot, call it. can't use cool. showers and storms will continue and then bubbling up and eventually falling apart here by late evening and into we're going to continue to follow the tropical wave. hurricane hunters are scheduled to depart 11:00 this morning. once they arrive they will be able to give us a lot more information on where this thing is as far as its health and that will help the forecast eventually. still thinking a northwest

at 9:00 -- we begin in italy where a deadly 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck overnight. >> right now rescue crews are digging deep into this rubble to try to find any signs of life. we head to lindsay logue now breaking situation all morning. >> the death toll has changed in the past hour? >> reporter: the earthquake struck 3:30 in the morning. nearly everyone was asleep at the time. many died when homes crumpled around them. at least 150 people are still
