beautiful buildings that once stood talled and strong have been reduced to rubble. nothing more than dust and piles of broken concrete. this is amatrice, the mayor there says most of his town is wiped out. the better picture from the sky shows blocks of buildings leveled. >> the electricity is gone. can't see anything. some people grabbed their phones and we made our way down the stairs to the garden. >> reporter: as the day goes on in central italy we've seen people in their pajamas and family pets buried feet under the rubble being pulled to stretchers. to safety. but it hasn't been easy. the region is remote and mountainous, troops haven't even made it to every affected area. there are already reports of landslides and bridges on verge of collapse not to mention the roads in town are blocked. it's taken a bulldozer hours just to clear a path. the quake was so strong people

again no crashes there. just a lot of heavy volume. checking on the average speed, looking for the slow spot, veterans expressway is winning this contest, 26 the average speed there. 38 on 275 from fletcher to i-4, and 70 the average speed on i- 75 from bruce b downs to i-4. back to you. we want to go back to pinellas county now. overnight fire forced people out of their homes. investigators are trying to figure out what started this fire at the station sqre street in clearwater. you can see the fire there. it started in the 12th floor unit on the -- on the 12th floor. a viewer also shared cell phone video as the flames were still burning before 11:30 last night. firefighters got there and not the flames out in minutes and crews say nobody was hurt. people said at first they thought it was a drill and then saw the flames. >> it kind of looked like a bonfire except the sticks and

-- like the balcony, a flower pot or -- two flower pots actually. >> after nearly two hours they were all allowed to go home. firefighters are still investigating. we have an update on the massive apartment fire in maryland earlier this month. overnight police identified the two children killed in the explosion. officials say an 8-year-old and 3-year-old both boys are among the seven people killed. the explosion at the flower branch apartments shook homes more than a mile away. some people rert natural gas before the explosion. officials also had been called to the building on july 25th by residents who reported smelling gas. new information now, the father of the south florida man who allegedly bit a man's face after killing him and his wife says his son's organs are failing. dr. haroff says his son's liver is failing possible due to chemical poisoning.

chemicals in the garage of john and michelle stevens. there are more tests being done if he was under the influence of other drugs. back in florida pinellas county investigators are trying to figure out how this car ended up in a retention pond. overnight detectives said they believed that car was stolen. neighbors say they heard a loud crash 4:30 in the afternoon in tarpon springs. they came out an saw the back of the red car slowly sinking. one woman said she saw a young woman standing near the car with the minutes before it went into the water. tarpon springs firefighters jumped into the water, got through the top of the sun roof to look for anybody inside. they say the car was empty. one neighbor said he considered to jump into the water himself when it first happened. >> i was thinking if i seen somebody i would go in and see if i could help them but if i didn't see anybody i wasn't going in there because the gators in there are five, six feet long. >> deputies say the car doesn't belong to anyone who lives in the community. they did get in touch with the

two bombings at a hotel in southern thailand killed one hotel employee, injured 29 others. that area of the country is increasingly the scene of attacks by islamic insurgents. both bombs were planted inside cars. the first one exploded in the hotel parking lot. the second one 20 minutes later in overnight turkey launched a major operation to clear islamic militants out of a syrian town just out of its border. it's in a strategic location that lies at the western bank of the euphrates river that crosses into syria. turkey hopes freeing the town will allow aid workers to return and lessen the number of

buckets there. in fact some pockets of 3 to 5- inch totals. steering currents, area i high pressure to the north. not going to curve out to sea, it's going to sneak in under this high. this is like a cog, it can't really go north so it will head west. the question is how will it arrive when it gets to the bahamas this weekend? will it be a tropical storm? a big rain event? or some wind. leaning towards the wind, look at the conditions, 58 to eventually temperature. that is conducive for not just development but you can go to very explosive development. this has to be watched very closely especially for south florida. the wind shear is another factor. it's very low. the forecast hasn't changed that much. it continues to hang to the north and west. what it doesn't show you, the intensity we're looking at. that is still to be determined. in fact i've put both you and the gfs -- the european and

apartment and get a second chance at life. 9:44. heartbreaking story from south florida. police find seven children ages 2 to 9 hungry and living in filthy conditions in this miami gardens home. you can see piles of trash outside the house but investigators say what was inside was even worse. officials say some of the kids were lying on a mattress covered in roaches and appeared to not have eaten in days. they found rats running the home. police arrested four parents, two couples living in the house. three tested positive for marijuana and cocaine. the children are currently in foster care. this is classic florida living. a woman spotted a gator wandering through an office parking lot on fletcher avenue in tampa and snapped the pictures. we suspect the gator was just crossing the parking lot to get to the nearby river. no one bothered the gator, he went about business as usual.

you attended the conference last year. what was it about the experience last year that moved you? >> i think first of all it's important to know that there are women's conferences and then there is this conference. the energy, the empowerment, the battery recharge and the power that you feel when you leave is -- it's indescribable. you walk in feeling i'm going to this conference to do the basic, ne quick tips. seven things you need -- and the basics that most people would go to a conference to learn and to get. but you walk out feeling 10 times more powerful. you understand the strength in women, the strength in the camaraderie that women have. you understand the unbelievable network that i'm so lucky to have. this community is so lucky to have, with the working women of tampa bay, with jessica. you walk out just ready, to
