drive last night. one of the bullets went through the front bedroom where the baby was sleeping. the bullet hit the little girl in her wrist. she's in the hospital now. her wound is not life threatening. we have calls into the sheriff's office, we're trying to find out more information on who might have been involved and also what led up to the shooting. abc action news anchor james tully is on scene, working to get new information. we'll go live to him in about 30 minutes. more breaking news from belgium where we're learning reports of an explosion overnight in brussels are likely false. officials investigating the incident at the criminology institute telling us it's more likely an arson attack on a crime lab. the investigators think it was probably a criminal act, not a terrorist attack. right now there's no confirmation of any bomb. the original reports said a car drove through a barrier about eight hours ago followed by an explosion and damage to the building. no one was hurt. back here in the states a scare at the los angeles international airport after reports of a shooter. this morning police say they found no gunman or any shots

night. people heard loud noises prompting hundreds in the airport to spill out on the sidewalks and tarmac. we're waiting to find out what led to the -- what caused those noises and the confusion. we do know someone in a zorro costume was detained but not clear if he was connected in any way. good monday morning. temperatures in the 70s. quiet as we check in with low 80s. by this afternoon pretty much what we had yesterday. numerous showers and storms though titan doppler radar pretty quiet now. the beginning of the thunderstorm activity earlier today, keep it in mind, already at noon, 1:00, we'll begin to see showers and storms with an easterly flow. it will continue to intensify the next few days. widen out the shot and you can see showers and storms across the southeast and notice the motion, broad circulation. the reason for that our tropical depression number 9. this one continues, will continue to head up to the

over cuba but once it gets to the eastern gulf we're expecting it to become a little more organized. and that will have a tropical storm. all that moisture all the while ahead of it will begin to stream in. so beginning tomorrow, going right through friday we'll have bouts of very heavy rainfall. its closest pass to us would be around thursday here. that means we could experience tropical storm-force winds in excess of 40, 50 miles per hour. we'll keep you posted. a lot can happen but this is what we are thinking now on thursday. then it for today, you just need to worry about the summer thunderstorms. pretty typical. by 1:00 and continuing into the evening hours. our temperatures around 92. more on the potential heavy rain and flooding when i see you in a few minutes. janelle, how is the monday morning commute? >> so far so good. the big story is that big construction project happening in downtown tampa, rodney is going to have more on that coming up. your drive on the interstates

starting in pinellas county, this is 275 at gandy, up to speed in both directions. pushing 70 from bridge-to- bridge. checking i-4, at 75 looking great here as well, just 22 minutes from the lakeland area to downtown tampa. if you're in wesley chapel trying to decide between 75 and 275, really doesn't matter at this time. we're both in the green, 275 from the apex to i-4, 64 the average speed, 67 to make about that same 5:03. a major construction project gets underway today near amalie arena. it could impact your commute for the next year. >> abc action news reporter rodney dunigan is live near channelside. explain the road closures and the reroutes of this pretty lengthy project. >> reporter: it is going to be lengthy. possibly two years to complete this project. so a lot of folks who travel this area daily will definitely

a man with alzheimer's was found dead floating in a wesley chapel pond. pasco county deputies say it happened near the home of his caretaker. a call came in after 3:00, that 87-year-old herman walter was missing. his body discovered about an hour later. the person taking care of him says walter recently moved here from georgia and complained of wanting to go home. no foul play is suspected. 5:05. this morning the tampa police department is mourning the death of one of its own. master patrol officer arnold iii died during an off- duty scuba diving accident in nevada over the weekend. he was a 27-year veteran of the force. he was an outstanding officer who mentored hundreds of at risk youth through the police explorer program. shamika says he made a huge difference in her daughter's life through that program. >> she wanted to give up. a couple of times. he was always there, basically

also a male police officer figure. just to enchug her to -- encourager her to continue to pursue her career. >> arnold known for his warm smile and infectious laugh was feature everyday in the show "rookies." we'll let you know when funeral arrangements are announced. a mom arrested in pinellas county for leaving her kids alone in a hotel room where she went out and drank for six hours. a first look at claudia acosta, she will have an ankle bracelet on when she bonds outs in a few hours. she faces multiple charges after deputies say her 10 and 13-year-olds were left alone and eventually wandering the tradewinds resort in st. pete looking for food. at the same time deputies say acosta entered a private party and began to threaten staff at the bar. she faces two negligent charges and disorderly conduct. one person is dead from a gas plant explosion in the panhandle. people near that plant outside pensacola say their houses shook when it happened

chemical that ignited but not clear how it was ignited. officials say there's no active gas leak so everyone in the area is safe. detectives say two people drove from miami all the way to tampa to rob a home. hillsborough county deputies say thous was full of marijuana plants. they say leanis rodriguez and carlos rodriguez kicked in the back door of the home on dew drop lane saturday night after an sergeant. -- after an argument. he shot the suspects and they ran off. >> i had no idea. this is a quiet neighborhood. everybody waves at you when you go down the street. it's just -- i would never have imagined. >> the home invasion suspects are in the hospital. they are not cooperating. deputies are still looking for the man that shot them. deputies polk county arrest a man for carjacking last

he's accused of committing the crime. sean mclaughlin faces several charges now of armed robbery and grand theft. deputies say he approached an employee in the parking lot of a restaurant and threatened her. then stole her car and crashed it. a witness there at the time of the carjacking recognized his face at a convenience store. it took a whole year but a south dakota woman diagnosed with a deadly cancer finally got to meet the stranger who saved her life through a bone marrow transplant. >> the recipient lived thousands of miles apart but thanks to facebook they are strangers no more. christie henley lives in south dakota, doctors diagnosed her with leukemia last year. she received a bone marrow transplant from a complete stranger. then learned his identity last july. >> she contacted adam peterson on facebook, found out he lives in texas. they plan to meet in jacksonville over the weekend. christie says they are forever connected, she now considers him family saying she would not be here without him. coming up -- construction

welcome back. thank you for joining us on this early monday morning. 79 degrees in tampa. 81 muggy degrees in st. petersburg. here's a live look at i-275 near 22nd a live look at more traffic and weather coming up in a few seconds. right now authorities are searching for two men after a plane crashed in new orleans. >> it was found in lake pontchartain yesterday. it went down a thousand feet from the runway during a training exercise. >> one woman on board, they are not releasing her condition but plan to release more

a deadly bus crash involving flood relief workers in louisiana. >> the group was heading to baton rouge when it crashed into a fire truck and three other vehicles. a 21-year-old mississippi man and firefighter died. a second firefighter is in critical condition, 35 people in the hospital including at least three children. >> investigators say that bus driver, 37-year-old dennis rodriguez doesn't have a commercial driver's license and is an illegal immigrant from honduras. he will face two counts of negligent homicide. it's a monday. we had a wet afternoon and evening. more of the same today with temperatures in the upper 70s. hour by hour forecast before we get to the tropics, low to mid- 80s. by 10:00, very warm and humid with temperatures in the low 90s and the thunderstorms, notice they begin around noon, continue through the evening so what is happening? we're getting a little more moisture working in, tropical moisture in fact by tomorrow we're going to be raining

steadier rain. you can already see the effects from the tropical depression from the south. a broad area of low pressure. we get that easterly flow on the northern side of the low which is right now disorganized. you expect that over land but once it taps over water we expect some organization, not significantly but we expect a tropical storm. it's still a depression. around 1:00 a.m., tonight after midnight, winds. that would be enough to designate it a tropical storm. notice the curve it takes back towards the state of florida. you're thinking well, we have plenty of time. well, we do in that the center won't arrive until thursday but with a tropical storm the rain tends to expand a lot more than a hurricane. so we're going to get the bands of heavy rainfall that will begin to impact us well ahead of the center. tomorrow right through thursday and even into friday. that is the reason we're thinking heavy rain, flooding

through the next several days. we'll watch that closely. for today, indirectly, we'll be influenced a little as the tropical moisture moves in, certainly with the easterly know that will favor the storms blossoming and heading to the coast by the time we get to the evening hours. so heavy rain potential tuesday through friday, it makes its closest pass thursday. that is when we could experience tropical storm conditions. we'll probably have warnings and watches posted for the coast. again as we see it now the flood potential is threat, unsays something changes it looks to be more of a rain event than wind event. with partly sunny skies, plenty of cloud cover and then the storms come on in. you see rain chances quite high turning windy thursday. by next weekend we'll begin to get back to our typical afternoon thunderstorms. the next few days look to be on the wetter side, including, janelle janelle martinez, the

now. there's nothing out there now to slow you down. starting our drive i-75 at state road 60 through the brandon area on 75, looking great. again no crashes or breakdowns. the interstate running smoothly now in both directions. buckle up, we're going to take a virtual drive and check out the drive on i-4, heading through ybor city heading right towards the junction. this is where things start to get messy, a little later on in the morning commute but now as you can see we're all in the green. there's a live picture 275 and i-4, cars flowing nicely in all directions. back to you. 5:17. in new mexico hundreds of people gathered over the weekend to celebrate the life of a 10-year-old girl brutally murdered the day before her 10th birthday. family and friends gathered yesterday to hold a birthday party and memorial service for her. police say that little girl was drugged, raped and strangled by her mother's boyfriend while her mother watched.

she was found in a burning blank evident in a bathtub last wednesday. family and friends showed up wearing her favorite color and brought lots of gifts including stuffed animals. >> it's amazing. it's great to have so many people come together when there's so much bad going on in the world, that there is good people out here. and that we're here to celebrate victoria and her life. >> victoria martin's mother, boyfriend and a third woman are charged child abuse resulting in death. police in new york are investigating a brawl at cornell university. it left an ithaca college student dead. officials say 19-year-old anthony nazayer was killed after a stabbing 2:00 a.m. yesterday during a large fight. that sophomore was from brooklyn. it broke out after an event at the student union where several hundred college kids were. another student from ithaca was hurt but is out of the hospital this morning.

new research proves student athletes should sit out if they want to recover faster after suffering a concussion. researchers at the university of pittsburgh medical center studied 69 teens who suffered concussions. students who continued to play took twice as long to recover and experienced worse symptoms compared to students who were researchers hope the findings bolster support for return to play laws and policies nationwide. the study is published in the journal pediatrics. on-line retailer amazon is testing a 30-hour workweek it says is designed specifically for women. >> a team of workers including managers will work monday through thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. parttime workers will get the same benefits as full time workers. amazon says the pilot program is aimed at women who tend to
