of a bomb but investigators again say those are false and again this is not terror related. they say someone drove a car through a security barrier and that crash was then followed by an explosion. we're also following a scare at the los angeles international airport after reports of a shooter. this morning police say they did not find any evidence of gunshots. they say it was some unknown loud noise that sent hundreds of people running scared. during the chaos police arrested a man dressed zorro costume. someone reported a man in dark clothing. the person hasn't been identified but again we don't know if there is any kind of connection between that person arrested and the reports of a gunman. >> i get the police all around me telling me to put the hands up. i'm not even thinking about what is going on, right? and what i was wearing. >> police released that man calling it a misunderstanding. they are now trying to figure out what was -- what that sound was.

alarm two weeks ago at jfk airport. caused by people celebrating the olympics. good morning. we're looking at our developing story here, this is what we'll be talking about the next few days, because of the rain potential coming up. this is tropical depression 9, if you're just tuning in, developed it yesterday, it's now a closed low and going to move a little further north. so by tonight we'll probably have a tropical either hermine or ian because another feature in the carolinas that may develop before that. 40 mile-per-hour winds, and it will be a tropical storm tonight. then yes, moving to the north and then northeast. huge cone here so just keep it in mind but i think with this feature as it is typical with tropical storms the center not as important. it's the rain associated with the storm that is going to get pulled in here well out ahead of it so despite the fact this gets here on thursday rain will begin tomorrow in earnest with

already setting up. for today just a typical afternoon summer thunderstorms so it's going to be dry through the better part of the day. then by 1:00 we'll see the thunderstorms brewing east of us. then we're getting good rain between 4:00 and 7:00. then more where that came from of course heading into tomorrow as the system begins to get a little closer to us. we'll get into the heavier rain which right now looks to be the biggest threat. the roads are dry now. we have a serious crash about. i mentioned it before. we now have more information. in st. pete, st. pete police telling us that someone was hit at the intersection of 34th street north at 5th avenue north. also reporting the intersection is blocked so you might want to find another way around it. you can use 43rd street north andst avenue -- and 1st avenue. more on twitter @tampabaytraffic. times on i-4, still in the

>> live look outside at 275 through downtown tampa traffic looking great on the interstates but you might run into some problems on channelside near amalie arena. ron ron is out there now -- rodney dunigan is out there now. we have a major project starting today and it's going to last almost two years, rodney, what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: folks who travel this area on a daily certainly have to pack patience. as you mentioned this roadway promising could possibly last up to two years. when administrators say when complete it will be a major benefit to those who work in the area as well as local businesses, but you have to get used to the construction the last few months. the first section of this process begins this morning along morgan street. one lane of morgan will be blocked off to all traffic but traffic will still be able to go in both directions.

deputies are looking for the person that shot two men during a home invasion. they also made another discovery. they say that house was full of marijuana plants. they say the suspects kicked in the back door of a home on dew drop lane saturday night. then a man inside shot the suspects and ran off. the deputies say the suspects are now not cooperating with them. 6:06. a man accused of carjacking a woman as she was leaving work last week is now off the streets polk c say they found 41-year-old shawn mclaughlin not far from where he allegedly committed the crime. now faces several charges including armed robbery and grand theft. last weekend detectives say he approached an employee from a bone fish grill restaurant and threatened her. then stole her car and crashed it. the witness there at the time of the carjacking recognized him at a convenience store. people in west palm are looking for the person who opened fire on an area packed with shops and restaurants.

yesterday, went down during a training exercise about 1,000 feet from the runway. a boater rescued a woman on board. investigators haven't revealed her condition just yet but say they are planning to release more information later today. deputies plan to arrest a bus driver after deadly crash involving flood relief workers in louisiana. >> the group was heading to baton rouge when the bus they were in crashed into a fire truck and three other vehicles. a 21-year-old mississippi man and firefighter died. a second firefighter critical condition. one of 36 people hospitalized including at least three children. the investigators say the bus driver, 37-year-old dennis rodriguez doesn't have a commercial driver's license and is an illegal immigrant from honduras. he will face two counts of negligent homicide. caught on camera -- the stunning moment an officer saves a man from being hit by a train. >> keep watching this here. the two men struggle before the officer finally is able to pull that man out of the way just

speeds by. this happened last week in new jersey. that man had laid on the tracks right as that transit officer showed up apparently trying to commit suicide. we're learning that officer who obviously risked his own life, victor ortiz has been on the force for 16 years. a touching meeting out of north florida because of a bone marrow transplant. >> the recipient and donor live thousands of miles apart but met for the first time in jacksonville over the weekend. christie henley lives in south dakota last year. she received a bone marrow transplant from a stranger and learned of his identity last july. she contacted adam peterson on facebook, found out that he lives in texas and arranged to meet in jacksonville. christie says she considers adam family now and says she would not be here without him. amazon is testing a 30-hour workweek with 40-hour benefits but says it doesn't plan to make that change companywide. >> the move follows a report by

80s by o:00. 10?:00. by 1:00. showers and thunderstorms, pushing to the coast by later this evening. titan doppler radar pretty quiet if you're heading out for the commute or the bus stop. looking dry but whole different story by later this afternoon with numerous showers and storms. of course we have our tropical depression 9 which will impact our weather in major ways the next few days right now looks like a big rain threat with the area of low pressure just to the north, western tip of cuba, it will become a tropical storm tonight. it will ian because we have another depression that will become a storm in the carolinas. 35 mile-per-hour winds, 40 tonight and we'll get that designation of tropical storm status. here's the latest track from the national hurricane center. i'll take you step by step. here's month night, 40 mile-per- hour winds tonight. tomorrow night. then it is going to curve to the north and east headed over towards the big bend. now with tropical storms unlike hurricanes the center point sometimes not as important. so if this was going to be a

big deal here. but the heaviest of the weather will actually be south of where you see these points here. that is going to be the tropical moisture that is going to get pulled in ahead of it. despite the fact this is further to the north we're still going to be immanaged with the heavy rain. in fact not just as it makes its closest pass to us but well out ahead of it. so that by tomorrow we're already getting into the bands of heavier rainfall. and so what will happen is we'll have a multiday event of accumulating rainfall which could lead to so we'll watch that closely but again as i mentioned for today, just dealing with our typical afternoon storms and then we'll get into the heavier rain beginning tomorrow and really continuing right through the end of the week. there's the system beginning to move in across the north with heavy rain bands setting up tuesday through wednesday. so heavier rain potential this week, certainly we'll watch our tropical storm as it develops today and potential for tropical storm conditions, that is some wind involved as well,

threat. the biggest threat. still going to be a hot day today with 92-degree day with water temperature at 87. easterly winds 15 and by the way, boating conditions going downhill big time tuesday through thursday. seas will continue to build. windy on thursday with high temperatures by then in the mid- 80s. then we'll begin to see better conditions by the weekend where we have a whole week to get through with perhaps some wet morning commutes but for now at least on mond we have a serious crash we've been following for about 45 minutes now. this is in st. pete. at 34th street north, our u.s. 19 and 5th avenue north. that intersection blocked now. so you're going want to avoided that. hearing reports this was a pedestrian or possibly someone getting out of their car, that person then struck by a truck. captain al will be heading there shortly to give us pore information but for now avoided this intersection. if you can. 43rd street north is an

6:32. deputies now investigating a drive-by shooting that injured a 1-year-old little girl in port richey. >> anchor james tully is live at that home now on westcott drive in port richey. how is that baby doing? >> reporter: we've heard good news that child did not suffer any life threatening injuries. look behind me, there's still a lot of activity here, a lot of investigators on scene. we're going to zoom in on the home they say was shot at last night just before 11:30. pasco sheriff's office hasn't named suspects or even given a vehicle description at this point. what they are saying is one of the bullets entered the bedroom where that little girl was sleeping and struck her on the wrist. again more officials have just arrived unable to tell me if this home was targeted, why. why it was targeted. deputies have watched him speak with some of the neighbors who even at this early hour perhaps

surveillance cam contrarathat may are captured. i am looking at the homes on the block and i don't see that but that would certainly help in the investigation. back to you. we'll pass along information when we get it. james tully, abc action news. 6:34. a scary emergency landing in florida. after a plane's engine failed. >> investigators are trying to figure out what caused the problem on the southwest flight. the plane was on its way to orlando from new orleans saturday morning when all of a sudden the plane started quickly. airline officials confirm there was a mechanical issue with the number one engine. the pilot was able to land safely in pensacola. one of the passengers says she knew something was wrong when the oxygen masks dropped from the ceiling. >> i had my 5-year-old sitting next to me. so i looked out the window, there was all the smoke, then held him more close to me and looked back and it was gone. i just saw medal flapping. >> reporter: airline officials say the 99 passengers and five crew were not hurt during the rough ride.

hundreds of people are expected to pay their respects today to one of the bay area's most beloved and respected catholic leaders. monsignor lawrence higgins died last wednesday. public visitation is noon to 9:00 today and tomorrow, at st. lawrence catholic church, the parish he founded. his life will be celebrated at a funeral mass wednesday, 11:30 at the church. today one local organization is making sure families in need are getting protection from the zika virus, bay is going to hand out 15,000 cans of mosquito repellent to anyone who needs it. the latest zika report for florida shows 15 new travel related cases, some from the bay area including three in pinellas county and one each in hillsborough county and sarasota counties. there are now 545 travel related cases, there are 42 locally transmitted cases. in democracy 2016 -- thousands of bay area voters did not wait until election day

tropical storm. in fact that is forecast to happen tonight and then it heads up to the north and then thursday passing here with tropical storm conditions possible on thursday. but that is thursday. well out ahead of it we have the moisture coming in. so this event begins for us tomorrow and continues through the end of the week. this is going to be a big rain event here as the waves of rain begin to move through with the bands, the actually, center of the storm still, on wednesday morning, well to the south and west but we're going to begin to see the potential for significant rainfall here. upwards of 6 inches throughout the event through the end of the week tuesday through friday and then thursday, windy day that we would have to deal with but the main threat not the winds. it's going to be be the flood potential with all the rain coming in, in waves. so mostly cloudy, 92 will be the warmest day for a while. as the cloud cover takes over and the rainfall does as well. from tuesday through the end of the week. temperatures holding into the mid-80s and then again on

conditions as our tropical storm begins to approach. more on that coming up in the next few hours. as ivan keeps watch on the tropics, a lot of families are not waiting for flooding. they are getting ready now. we found people getting drenched over the weekend trying to fill up sandbags. pinellas county and the city of gulfport already opened sandbag sites. the sites in pinellas county are open today during daylight hours. st. pete locations 9:00 to 5:00. we have addresses of the locations now on our and on our facebook page. employees from a local restaurant are set to begin the long drive to louisiana today to deliver supplies to flood victims there. the salty rim grill in st. pete beach started a donation drive and say the response was overwhelming. some of the employees there have family and friends impacted by the flooding, they've lost their homes and businesses so now they are heading to baton rouge to deliver clothing, shoes, diapers, food and water from very generous people. police releasing new

chicago bulls star dwyane wade's cousin. she was pushing a stroller when she was hit by stray bullets on a chicago street. prosecutors charged 22-year-old darren sorels and his brother darwin with first degree murder in her death. they are documented gang members, darryl was just released from prison two weeks ago and was wearing an electronic monitoring device. they were chasing a 25-year-old man when she shot at him but hit the mother of four had just just enrolled one child in school. the one orlando fund raised $23 million so far for the pulse nightclub shooting victims but now gun violence experts say that is not nearly enough to help. they say it won't completely offset medical and other expenses caused by the mass shooting. they say the loss of future earnings for the survivors could reach $20 million and it could be another $16 million for costs associated with

campuses. libertarianle candidate gary johnson is optimistic he'll be included in the upcoming presidential debates. he has to average at least 15% in five recognized polls in order to be allowed into the debates. johnson saying yesterday his support is around 10% now. he admits it would be game over for his campaign if he doesn't get to debate. the coast guard says more than 160 cubans trying to sail to the u.s. are back in cuba this morning after being intercepted at sea. in all 161 migrants will return to cuba. cubans who are caught at sea are generally returned home but those who reach american soil are typically allowed to stay. if you're worried about your personal financial situation you're not alone in florida. a new survey finds consumer confidence is at its lowest level of the year. the survey for august finds consumer confidence dropped by nearly 5 points compared to the previous month. the measurement for those worried about their personal finances dropped by 10 points

miss the event. coming up on 6:53. >> we start in port richey where a toddler is in hospital after being shot during a drive- by shooting while sleeping in her bed. james tully is at the home. is this baby going to be ok? >> reporter: good news. we've heard that child did not suffer any life threatening injuries and is being hospitalized. pasco sheriffs' deputies just passing along this information. confirming this shooting was not random and that the mother of that infant is a documented gang member. they have not released suspects or description of the vehicle at this time. we're still awaiting that information. what would help the investigation of course is if someone witnessed this or if home surveillance cameras captured this on video. at this hour it's unclear if any of that actually happened. live in pasco county, james
