11:01 pm
new at 11:00 a state of emergency. the governors of florida and north carolina both declaring one as hurricane matthew churns this way. good evening. i'm wendy ryan. >> i'm paul la jamison uhler. this is some of the heavy rain people in jamaica are already seeing. the storm is expected to hit haiti the hardest. let's go right to chief meteorologist denis phillips. >> this is going to be a devastating night for haiti. this will be moving on shore right on the western tip of haiti with winds of about 145 miles per hour, a surge of
11:02 pm
incredible rainfall totals. this is a nasty hurricane, category 4, even stronger now than it was earlier on. the lowest pressure that's been recorded at 934 millibars. where is it going? the new track that just came out has given us a little bit of a change compared to the 5:00 track. and as we expected it is a little more to the west. our computer models have been trending that way for the last day or so, so we kind of figured the hurricane center would go a little bit closer. at this point there watches or warnings in effect for florida. i think there will be at 5:00 a.m. across the southeastern part of the state. category 4 hurricane, then staying at cat 3 through the bahamas. the area that we have to concern ourselves with would be thursday through friday. the west side of these storms is noticeably weaker than the east side. if this track were to verify the worst that we could see in our area, polk county,
11:03 pm
tropical storm force winds. none of that expected along the coast. if it were to go more to the west that's another story, and that is a possibility. hurricane force winds only extend 50 miles from the center, but tropical form force winds extend 200 miles from the center, and there's a chance they could go even larger as they go through the bahamas and brushing the east side of florida. there are the spaghetti models. there's that westward trend. these models on the west side we're not right here i think is a very accurate track that will give us the worst weather in our area thursday over on the east coast, potentially some hurricane conditions along the immediate coastline from melbourne, daytona, all the way down to miami. more on that and how it impact our weather through the rest of the week in a couple of weeks. meantime people from haiti who have relocated to the bay area now praying for their family members still living on the island.

11:18 pm
there's still some rain and lightning in the gulf of mexico, and it will stay there. tomorrow morning i think we will be dry to start the day. maybe storms later on. temperatures low to mid-70s right now. tampa right now 75, partly cloudy. clearwater still some clouds as is st. pete with temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. there's a look at satellite picture. today's cloud cover, today's rain nothing to do with matthew. we had some storms out in the gulf of mexico, and those clouds blah in from the you can see where they did, and that spawned the rain. now, tomorrow we're going get more of our east to southeast wind like we typically see you know july and august and september. and in doing so, i suspect that will touch off another round of storms tomorrow afternoon. not in the morning. when you wake up there will still be plenty of clouds, but it should be dry. even by lunchtime maybe nothing more than a few isolated showers, but by 4:00 we begin to see a few more. and then by later on, eastly
11:19 pm
the isolated showers chances until probably sometime about 10:00 or 11:00. wednesday morning, same thing. exact same setup. quiet, although some storms and a little more moisture by late afternoon, early evening. indirectly could be related to what's going on down to the south. thursday and friday, that's another story entirely. that's when we'll have to start looking, especially on the east coast. let's talk about that. you look at overall rainfall totals, the gfs model. of florida. so obviously that's where the heavy rain is. this storm, unless there is a dramatic change in track, will not be a major rain event for us. so worried about flooding? you don't have to. it's coming in from the east, and i think if that track stays anywhere from the coast of florida east, then there's nothing to worry about. this is what impacts we're expecting in the state of
11:20 pm
county, desoto, high larntiondz you could see winds of 40 to 50 miles per hour. obviously if it's more to the west it would be higher. but let's not talk about that because that is not the forecast. at this point we're on the west side of that storm. that is the dryer side. far less severe weather. but over on the east coast there is a definite possibility, especially down from, say, jupiter south of hurricane-force winds, especial nearer. there's the track. just a devastating night and day tomorrow for haiti. it is going to continue to move off to the north, touch by cuba, hang out in the bahamas for a couple of day, then move up the eastern seaboard and flirt with the carolinas. south carolina or north carolina are both in play. but for us this track has moved a little bit to the west from the 5:00 advisory. but it is still offshore. and as long as it stays offshore we have got nothing to worry about. now, if it goes on the far side
11:21 pm
some changes. but at this point in time, let's not even go there. the way i see this right now, this track may draw a little bit closer to the coast, but i do not believe it goes far inland. i think our interior counties have a little more to worry about with wind of maybe 40, 44 miles per hour at times. you can even see the wind field. the hurricane winds start to wind down. i'm going to focus more on the tropical storm force winds. they go out 20 miles from the center. so if the ends up there it's possib see tropical storm force winds later thursday into friday. if you live along the coast, if you live on the west coast of florida, at this point based on the current track, you have nothing to worry about. again, if it changes, we'll let you know on facebook. we're on 24/7. this is the track it is a goes into the bahamas. a formidable symptoms, but at this point expect to the stay just to the east of the coastline. here's a look at florida's most accurate seven-day forecast.

obviously austin will, and that will be something we'll decide later in the week. but this was something i know luke had been kind of targeting a little bit. so, you know, part of it is his -- his mind-set he's going to play. and that's good. that is what you want. a big game in south florida this weekend. 10th ranked miami hosting fsu. they definitely looked ahead last week from the easy fashions. the noles three 1/2 point underdogs. you've got to give mark richt credit. that game kicks off right here on abc at 8:00. the buccaneers are still in a holding pattern right now on how long defensive tackle
