it's behind the intended receiver switzer. had a chance to catch it but couldn't pull it in. so when you see things like that, you guys both played quarterback in college. when you see things like that, does it start to get into your head? do you start thinking about last week? >> greg: it does naturally. you'd love to say i don't think about last week but when you haven't handled elements well in the past, it sticks with you. so you got to be smart in play calling if you're north carolina's offense. >> greg: that will be another pass play. they lob it out there to logan. breaks one tackle. lowers the shoulder and collides with corn elder. that's a gain of about five on the play. brings up third down. clock running inside six minutes
7:01 pm
trubisky trubisky to throw. incredible grab by switzer to keep the drive alive. >> greg: that's mitch trubisky's security blanket. switzer's been so good for so long. trubisky leaned on him there in a critical down in distance. >> tom: we're under six minutes, fellas. that might be the play of the ga that's that's switzer in motion. they're going to throw it to him. switzer trying to get outside. picks up a couple. corn elder in run support pushed him out at the 45 yard line. and switzer's shaken up on the play. >> greg: l >> greg: look at the passing game right now.
7:02 pm
first. but everything's been behind the line of scrimmage. high percentage completions. keep the clock running. keep the offense moving. >> dave: that's his 206th career catch. he is now the school record holder in receptions. second and seven. carolina taking the play clock down to 3. pressure coming. trubisky dumps it off to and hood will stretch and get an important extra two yards. elder and pinckney clocked him, but you see the power of hood. his importance at 230 pounds, it's third and two instead of third and four. >> tom: and he stays inbounds, fellas. watch north carolina take this play clock into the 10, maybe 8 seconds remaining while this

down. >> dave: trubisky to throw on third down and two. lobbing it, catching it for a first down! thomas jackson, the first time they've thrown it to him today. and he pulls it in. two big catches on this drive by jackson and switzer on third down. >> greg: that's a great play. it's a good lesson for anybody at home. might not jackson, the junior, when his number's called and the game's on the line, he makes the play for the tar heels. >> dave: meanwhile william sweet just just committed another error. so seven presnap penalties, three have come in the red zone.
7:04 pm
miami miami calls a time-out, using a time-out on defense here with the clock stopped because of the penalty. paint differently... ...question everything you know... ...and what you don't know... what if it's built with better ingredients... ...given super powers... ...and even a secret base to test those powers. since benjamin moore reinvented paint, der... ...is it still paint? find benjamin moore paint,

7:06 pm
>> dave: >> dave: tonight at 7 p.m. eastern, it's ole miss and arkansas. the razorbacks after losing to alabama last week, that's on espn tonight. to call a time-out with the clock stopped because of the north carolina penalty so they had only two remaining. may they may need that time-out back. carolina's got the ball up 7. ball on the 39 yard line. in trouble. the back field, logan and he's taken down. they ruled that the running back logan was down.
7:07 pm
nortan nortan and mcintosh were back. >> greg: it's not often on a jet sweep you see a defensive tackle make the play in the backfield. that's explosion by the sophomore. >> dave: he had a blocked field goal earlier in the game, too, play clock. logan with nowhere to run. he goes out of bounds. that's a big mistake that time by logan. you got to just take a seat, let the clock run. now it's stopped with 2:31 go. >> greg: a little bit of blame needs to go to the offensive coordinator. why are you running a sweep into the boundary that could lead
7:08 pm
>> dave: t >> dave: third and 17. pressure pressure coming. trubisky grounds it. was there a receiver in the area? pressure by harris. so no grounding opinion they have not flown the flag. it is fourth down and carolina is going to have to punt in the rain. >> tom: they basically just provided miami with two free time-outs. >> dave: now miami has two time-outs, 1:53 to go. >> greg: let's not forget last week in the elements, the punter for north carolina, tom sheldon,
7:09 pm
line, which allowed the hokies to score a touchdown. so in the rain, important for him to secure the snap. >> tom: we're going to have a delay of game here, guys. >> dave: they did this earlier on accident. this one's on purpose. >> referee: five-yard penalty, fourth down. >> dave: they wanted to give their true freshman punter more room just to kick it and not try to place it. >> tom: i'm perplexed as to that last play call. third and 17. if you run the football between the tackles, maybe you force miami to use a time-out. instead you throw a screen into the ground and stop the clock for them. >> dave: i'm with you, lugs. it's very questionable the last couple play calls for the tar heels. >> dave: tom sheldon, true
7:10 pm
he did hav he did have a little bit of trouble with it but it turned out to be a terrific punt, though it goes into the end zone. did really well just to get that down into the 2. but it bounces into the end zone. sheldon had a little trouble gripping it and ripping it. brad kaaya will have two time-outs to go 80 yards to tie the ball game. see his numbers? 7 of 15 doesn't look great but he's had at least three drops here in the fourth quarter. bottom line is he just looks better this half than he did in the first half. >> greg: much better. totally different player this half. but this is where you're made at a quarterback. fourth quarters, down, difficult situation. this is where you write your
7:11 pm
>> dave: >> dave: kaaya in trouble. hits walt at the 25 yard line. the umpire got in the way. the coaches think he was out of bounds and was hit late but no flag. it is a third down. the clock will stop to reset the chains. >> greg: really good job by brad kaaya getting rid of that football. he took a shot. when his offensive lineman got beaten badly at the line of scrimmage, he was able to locate. still plenty of time. >> dave: kaaya stepping up. ball's out! he's hit by carney. carolina scoops it up. it was malik carney with the blow to force the fumble and the
7:12 pm
>> greg: >> greg: the life going out of hard rock stadium. 53, malik carney. situational pass rusher. it's only 230 pounds. he absolutely gets right around trevor darling, the left tackle. he's been a little bit banged up. had a pretty decent day if you're a pass rusher, you love the two-minute drill. carney comes up with the huge strip sack. >> dave: miami's not done yet, though. two time-outs. again, if it gets the ball back, it there won't be a lot of time and who know what is the score will be. carolina's in the red zone. you want to know if they would even take a chance at a kick. here's hood to the 15 yard line
7:13 pm
richt, leaving miami with one. here's the reaction from kaaya. frustrated that his team is staring a second straight loss in the face right now. >> greg: he's battled, man. didn't have his best stuff in the first half. took a beating last week. got hit time and time again by that florida state defense. a couple weeks ago against georgia tech, took a l in that ball game. he's a he's a warrior. unfortunate he wasn't age to secure that football. >> dave: 1:25 remaining. you would imagine carolina is just going to run the ball here, force miami to call another
7:14 pm
the clock then down to about 40 seconds before making a decision on what to do on fourth down. if there is a fourth down. virginia tech was losing to syracuse by 14 points. so if that holds up, tech will be 2-1, pitt will be 2-1 and carolina will be 3-1. miami plays at virginia tech on thursday night on espn. so needless to say, up for grabs, clemson in command of the atlantic after that overtime win of north carolina state earlier today on abc. who is the best team in the coastal do you think? >> greg: right now i'd have to say north carolina with this performance. >> dave: here's hood again, bouncing off tacklers. and i get what you're saying because last week even though it was virginia tech hammering north carolina, it's so hard to gauge in that kind of weather which team's going to handle it better.
7:15 pm
it well and they turned the ball over four times. there have been no turnovers in this game. five of their six games they've had a total of four turnovers. they had four last week. trubisky threw a deep ball here to matt holland, who was shaken u on the play. that led to a switzer touchdown. miami came back, though. a rush touchdown for yearby got them within seven and on fourth it. they don't get in. on the last series, the forced fumble and recovery by carolina to perhaps put this one away with the heels leading by 7. a frustrated brad kaaya. butch they may need him again here. look at the numbers today. again, kaaya had a lot of drops in this game. no turnovers for trubisky. two picks last week, 58 yards, offer 300 yards passing this week.
7:16 pm
and hood gets the first down and basically ends the game. great run by elijah hood. and we talked at the outset of the game why he's so important. because t.j. logan's 109, their other running back. hood's 230. you saw him break tackles there to move the sticks. there's there's an injured it's it's jamal carter. >> greg: i can't get over what a great run that was by elijah hood. he got stopped in his tracks. still four yards short of the line. he just willed his way to a first down. >> dave: it's an impressive win by north carolina.
7:17 pm
home, play another game against a team that had a heart breaking loss to its rival and for mitch trubisky to bounce back, you kept saying all week up think he's one of the better quarterbacks in football and he looked like it today. >> greg: he's outstanding. and he's going up against a defense that hits you, blitz you, they cover you extremely well in the secondary. so his performance today has been outstanding. but considering who the performance has been against, >> dave: there are going to be a lot of people that look at this week's game and say it's the same old team, they can't get the glory back. i know it's early. we're just getting a snapshot of the mark richt era. do you think this is a team that end up with nine, ten wins or are we looking at an 8-5, 9-4-type season? >> greg: they have everything
7:18 pm
little inexperienced at linebacker but talented nonetheless, really good in the secondary. they didn't play well in the first half today and that was obviously a big reason why it's looking like they're going to fall to the tar heels. but this is a talented football team and mark richt is an outstanding coach. he's going to build miami into a winner. i think a perennial championship contender by the time it's all said and do they're getting the facilities where they need to be. once the facilities get, there the players will come. and miami will i think become a force in the very near future. >> $30 million practice facility that mark richt and his wife donated $1 million towards. >> tom: one area, fellas, where i think they are very deficient and as the season wears on, they could get exposed, is in the
7:19 pm
they've already suffered some injuries, they've struggled in pass protection. those shots begin to take their toll. i think a lot of the reasons they have a good running game is because those running backs are really good as well. >> dave: trubisky takes a knee. miami can't stop the clock. so the north carolina tar heels improve to 5-2, 3-1 in the coastal, coastal, miami after being ranked number ten going into last week has now dropped two in a row at home. final final score from miami, carolina 20, 'canes 13. for greg mcelroy, tom luginbill and our entire crew, i'm dave
